If paying actors etc. is the issue, showing one-off episodes is unlikely to be a big deal.

That does, though, suggest it's not a case of "We can't show these episodes under any circumstances" as the channel implied and as some fans seem to believe. At most, it's a case of "It would cost more money than we're willing/able to pay."

And if the issue was that 1996 had already been repeated one more time than the rest of the show...just how many times has 1988 been shown since then?

four or five that i know of?

1999 (7/Living)

2009/10 (7two)

2019 (Amazon Prime)

2023 (7plus)

2024 (That's TV - UK)

So, since 7two stopped the early years 1988 has been repeated three times and in general 1988 has been repeated five times

1988 is cheap to re-show because the residuals aren't high. One-off airings of episodes after the mid 1990s isn't going to cost a fraction of what re-showing 200 episodes a year is.

Living started about 160+ eps in, didn't they?

Why? Did the actors, writers, directors etc not get as good a deal as their 90s counterparts?

Apparently not

On a tangent: this is entertaining if true https://www.news.com.au/entertainment/tv/eddie-mcguire-rove-mcmanus-top-tvs-rich-list/news-story/39aaa1c5e52cd51b612dc6e6b9cbe3a0

The story of how Meagher negotiated his still-considerable salary has a twist worthy of a television script, according to a former Home And Away employee.

"Quite a few years ago on Home And Away, at the time the Bobbys (Nicolle Dickson) and the Roos (Justine Clarke) were leaving, a memo was sent around to the production office people stating, 'Don't let the old bastards go'," he said.

"Someone in their wisdom took this memo and attached it to the front of every script, which is then circulated to every actor in the show. Ray and Judy Nunn and Norman Coburn among others sat down together and did a group negotiation and had (Seven) over a barrel."

That's a really interesting bit of trivia. It's always fascinating to know how it could have changed. Norman, Ray and Judy were pretty close... I wonder if this didn't work, would they have left far earlier...what if one of them was done dirty and quit, would the other two follow solidarity...

It's also interesting what would have happened with Pippa if Tom wasn't cut. Vanessa would have stayed on and if she left a few years later would they even recast by then? Would Deb even be available? If Michael wasn't cut, would Debra have stayed indefinitely... What would have happened if Irene was cut in 2002 like was originally planned?

Maybe if Pippa had still around in 2000 then maybe they  might write Irene out in 2000 with Ken and Sutherlands could movie into Beach house instead and Hayley and Will stuck around and move in with Pippa and Christopher Fletcher could be recast played by Chris Egan and Christopher could had  Nick Smith storyline’s.
