H&A's highest ever viewing figures in the UK.

Apart from Dannii Minogue, all of these came later. I've never heard of Natalie Bassingthwaithe or Stephanie McIntosh so they probably never did much internationally. That's beside the point though. By the time ITV started showing Home and Away in 1989, Neighbours had well and truly stolen its thunder. By then they'd shown Scott & Charlene's wedding, Kylie and Jason were in the charts and the series had made its way into popular culture. Early Home and Away is ropey as hell and it took them a while to find their feet.

H&A could never compete with Neighbours properly. Even in the 1990s it was always Neighbours the more loved, talked about and watched show. H&A had a temporary boost in figures in late 1992 but it was soon back to business as usual by early 1993 down to 13 to 14 million as opposed to Neighbours 18 million. H&A never found its way into popular culture the way Neighbours did.

Even now, many people think Alf Stewart is a Neighbours character.

I'd agree H&A never had the cultural crossover Neighbours did, but ITV had not long lost Crossroads.  It would be several years before Emmerdale evolved into "the second soap" and a piece of the Neighbours action no doubt proved very attractive.  It was also the first Australian soap to be shown at the same pace nationwide on ITV; before Home and Away Australian soaps were shown at a pace determined by the regions, not network, usually mid-afternoon.

Neighbours had the head start, and I guess more associated with a suburban Australian cul de sac than a Australian seaside small town.

Thinking about it, its setting wasn't very different to the British soaps either. Coronation Street, Eastenders and Brookside were all set in urban areas and you had neighbours (ha!) going in and out of each other's houses and hanging out in t'pub and t'caf and t'shop. Home and Away was very different because it was set in a seaside town and didn't really have a set as such. And then it had these unusual themes such as fostering kids, a caravan park, a school and a beach. Being different is good but Neighbours was more conventional.

What about Emmerdale? Do you think that was more like soaps like Crossroads and H&A or more like Corrie, EE, Neighbours, Brookside etc?

1030 (Sophie gives birth) - 14.8M (Mon 8th Feb 93)

1222 (Dale's death) was only shown in the afternoon, as well known. So didn't even make the published BARB list for that week.

1223 (extended recap, episode after Dale's death) - 13.99M (Thurs 4th Nov 93)

Bobby's accident / death:-

1298 (boat crash at end of ep) - 13.85M (the episodes earlier in the week rated more highly!) (Thurs 17th Feb 94)

1299 (boat crash aftermath) - 14.59M (Fri 18th Feb 94)

1300 - 14.53M (Mon 21st Feb)

1301 - 13.83M (Tues 22nd Feb)

1302 - 14.52M (Weds 23rd Feb)

1303 (Bobby declared brain dead) - 14.54M (Thurs 24th Feb)

1304 (Machine switched off) 14.29M (Fri 25th Feb)

1305 (aftermath) - 13.9M (Mon 28th Feb 94)

1309 (funeral) - 13.67M (Fri 4th March 94)

Viewing figures for more "average" eps in that period were usually around the 11.3-13.2M mark. Will add more as time allows.

Just to demonstrate the time taken for H&A to become a (what was) ITV staple...

It didn't even enter BARB's top 30 listings for ITV (which usually needed a minimum of 6 - 7 million viewers) until Monday 10th April 89 (episode 41) with a mere (for UK 1989 standards) 7.42 million. It was the patchy for most of Spring / Summer; even Roo & Frank's non-wedding & the aftermath episodes didn't hit the 6 million mark!

By the end of September 89 (approx Aug 88 Aus pace), it was hitting around 9 - 10 million and just accelerated up from there. Episode 216 (aired 11th Dec 89, the Gary Samuel death mystery reveal) saw a whopping 13.31 million, the fifth most ITV show that whole week (the previous week wasn't published due to Christmas). That seemed to be it for the UK from then on... very quickly so, as ep 274 (one ep before the Bobbygate climax) rocked up 14.18M...!

At the time the ratings for EastEnders was combined with the week showing and the weekend omnibus. I know Neighbours and H&A were combined showings of the afternoon and evening repeat on the same day but if you took out the EE omnibus, the figures for each single week episode of EE and it would have been behind both Neighbours and H&A. I think a single episode of EE got about 12-13 million. Then the omnibus at the weekend bumped it to about 18-19 million as calculated.
