He might have conquered Wimbledon, but Hewitt admitted he was nervous to swap his racquet for a script. But he had some expert help on hand to coach him. It was a case of art imitating life at this week's filming as Hewitt played a "mystery man" who is captivated by the charms of Summer Bay's resident bubbly beach babe Hayley, played by his fiancee Bec Cartwright. But fans of the popular soap will have to wait until June to see whether the tennis star should give up his day job. In the first scene, he sits in the Summer Bay diner gazing intently at Cartwright. He has a speaking role in the second scene, exchanging pleasantries with Cartwright. Hewitt's acting debut came after he jokingly said he would like to play an extra, drinking a milkshake and sitting in the diner on Home and Away during a courtside interview at the Australian Open. Channel 7 wasted no time extending the offer of a cameo role. Seven's head of drama John Holmes said Hewitt had a quality about him on camera that commanded attention. "The story has it engineered so they both meet in the diner and I have to say when they do meet it is electric," Holmes said. "We obviously wanted to have him play alongside Bec and I think that is what the fans want to see as well." Holmes said if Hewitt wanted to swap centre court for Summer Bay there would be a job waiting for him. "If Lleyton Hewitt wanted to be on Home and Away I think we could probably squeeze a role for him, yes," Holmes said. While Hewitt has supported Cartwright with her acting, the Gold Logie nominee will be courtside when the he chases his second Wimbledon crown later this year.
