Chapter 9

In the middle of nowhere

Half an hour had passed and the night had finally settled in. The bushland had become very still. It was almost complete silence. No passing motorists and even the animals were asleep.

Irene "this is hopeless"
Mick "don't say that"
Irene "why not?"
Mick "because you are suppose to be the light"
Irene "the light to what"
Mick "the light to good"
Irene "right now, all I see is dark"
Mick "wait, what's that light in the distance"
Irene "I don't know, but it's coming closer"
Mick "maybe it's another car"
Irene "maybe it's help?"
Mick "it's not slowing down"
Irene "it's heading straight for us"
Mick "we can't stop"
Irene "we are going to crash"

 

Irene's house
Ash "where's Irene"
Olivia "she's gone to the city"
Ash "no she hasn't"
Olivia "what do you mean"
Ash "we saw her leave on a bike with some guy"
Olivia "what guy?"
Ash "I don't know, I've never seen him before. But it sounded pretty intense"
Olivia "can you describe him"
Ash "regular height, darkish brown hair and he seemed dodgy"
Olivia "tell me, its not her son"
Ash "wait, Irene has a son?"
Olivia "never mind that"
Olivia runs up stairs.
Ash "where are you going?"
Olivia "to get my laptop, so I can get up a picture of this psycho"
Olivia types in Mick name into the search engine and clicks on the first link. It's a picture of him at the police station, but it will have to do.
Ash looks at the picture.
Ash "that's him"
Olivia "we have to call the cops immediately"
Olivia goes to pick up the phone. But Ash stops her.
Ash "wait!, I don't want to have to explain why I was here.
Olivia "why were you here?"
Ash ...........
Olivia "Ok fine don't tell me. But I'm still calling the cops"
Ash "Or me and Justin could find them"
Olivia "No. I am going to leave this up to the proper authorities. If you don't want to answer any questions, I suggest you leave before they rock up"
Ash "thank you"
Olivia "I just hope Irene is ok?"
Ash "I'm sure she will be"
Ash leaves.

 

Road

Irene's eyes flicker open. She tries to get to her feet. She stumbles around slowly drifting in and out of consciousness. Her hand accidently brushes the side of her head. Irene tries to focus on her hand that is now covered in blood. She can barely hold her focus for more than a few moments. She continues to stumble further and further along the road. There's nothing visible in the distance. Irene lowers her eyes to the ground where she sees Mick. He appears to be unconscious. Irene kneels down beside her son and puts her hand to his neck and checks for a pulse.

Irene "He's alive". the words barely come out as more than a whisper. Irene eyes shut again. exhausted and injured she mumbles "I will just stay here and rest a while".

Oh no! poor Irene! Glad Olivia was sensible and stuck to her guns about calling the police. Hope they find Irene soon.

Chapter 10

The Hospital

Tori "It has been a busy shift"
Nate "Yes, It really has been a exhausting day"
Tori "Would you like to go for a drink after work"
Nate "Is it's the bosses shout?"
Tori "only the first round"
Nate "oh so there's a second round"
Tori "maybe"
Nate "tempting"
Tori "just tempting"
Nate "ok, it's a date"
Tori "cool"
Nate and Tori are about to leave when two patients are rushed into the ED.
Nate "What have we got here?"
Nate stands there stunned. He can't believe his eyes.
Nate walks over to Irene and removes her oxygen mask.
Irene "There's someone..."
Nate "you need to rest"
Nate places the oxygen mask back on Irene's face.
Nate is in a head spin. Everything is out of focus.
Tori "Can you handle this"
Nate "what!"
Tori "I sed can you handle this"
Nate turns around to see Mick on the other bed. Nate walks over him. Mick is unconscious.
Nate grabs hold of Mick by his shirt. Pulls his unconscious body towards him.
Tori runs towards Nate and starts screaming at him.
Tori "what the hell are you doing?"
Nate lets go of Mick. Tori grabs his hand and pulls him away.
Nate brushes Tori off.
Tori "where are you going"
Nate "to do my job"
Tori "no your not, I'm sending you home"
Nate "I need to be here"
Tori "your not fit to work"
Nate "I disagree"
Tori "I'm the boss. I get the finale call"
Nate "not today"
Tori "Nate, I'm trying to help you"
Nate "What I need, is to make sure Irene's ok"
Tori "she's in capable hands"
Nate "I'm glad we agree"
Tori "your not the only doctor here"
Nate "I don't care. unless your going to fire me. I'm staying"
Tori "Nate..."
Nate walks away.

 

 

The Accident site

Flashback:
Flashing lights are shining down from above. The rescue choppers have arrived. Irene is still drifting in and out of consciousness. She rubs her eyes with her hand. She hears a faint cry for help in the distance. She manages to get to her feet. Stumbling along the road towards to the sound.
Rescue worker: Hi There. You have been in some sort of accident. We are here to assist you.
Irene tries to focus on the voice talking to her.
Rescue worker "looks like you've hit your head pretty hard"
Irene "have I?"
Rescue Worker "We need to take you and the young gentlemen to the nearest hospital immediately"
Irene hears the voice again calling out for help. She brushes past the walker in the direction of the cliff face.
Irene is still half out of it. when she spots a huge tree branch with a small break in it dangling over the side of the cliff. There is a white bus sitting on top of the huge branch.
Her eyes begin to drop in and out of focus. She starts rubbing them again.
Irene hears the faint sound again asking for help.
She's almost on top of the cliff. When she see's a body lying beneath the cliff face on a area of rocky ground.
the rescue worker drags Irene away from the cliff face.
rescue worker "we need to go now"

Chapter 11

The summer bay house
Zac "They found new evidence today"
Leah "you mean, to do with the fire at the school last week"
Zac "yes. It started in my office"
Leah "they don't think, you had anything to do with it, do they?"
Zac "of course not"
Leah "did they find anything in your office"
Zac "no. but they are checking all the school lockers tomorrow morning"
Leah "should we be worried about Hunter"
Zac "I found something"
Leah "what?"
Zac "Olivia's confidential file on the floor of my office"
Leah "Is that serious"
Zac "yes it means a student has hacked into my confidential file draw"
Leah "surely you don't think Olivia, would do such a thing"
Zac "no, but I have a feeling my son might of"
Leah "I thought you were going to trust Hunter more"
Zac "I am"
Leah "Does anyone else have access"
Zac "just me. I have the only key"
Leah "there you go. It couldn't possibly of been Hunter"
Zac "the key is missing"
Leah "are you sure another student couldn't of took it"
Zac "It's a possibility. But the only two places I keep it is in the pantry cupboard and on a key ring in my jacket pocket. So if it was someone else, they would of had access to the house or been in close proximity to me"
Leah "can you please, just talk to Hunter before you do anything else"
Leah reaches for Zac's hand and caresses it.
Zac "I promise, I will in the morning"

 

The School
Hunter and Olivia are walking hand in hand to school.
Hunter "I am so lucky"
Olivia "why?"
Hunter "because I'm dating the prettiest girl in school"
Olivia "that's so sweet of you"
Hunter and Olivia walk through the school hallways beaming at each other.
A detective walks up to them.
Detective "are you Hunter King"
Hunter "yes"
Detective "you need to come with us to the station. We have a few questions for you"
Hunter "in regards to what?"
Detective "the fire"
Hunter "I didn't do it"
The detective drags hunter out of the school grounds, whilst reading him his rights"
Detective "you are not obliged to say or do anything. But anything you do say may be used as evidence in a court of law"
Hunter starts to open the back door of the police car.
An out of breath Zac stops right next to the police car. Olivia just told me you were being pulled away for questioning.
Zac "what the hell is going on here detective?"
Detective "we are taking your son in for questioning"
Zac "for what?"
Detective "we have evidence suggesting that he lit the fire"
Zac "I'm going with you"
Hunter "I didn't do this, Dad"
Zac "I know you didn't"
Hunter is almost in the car when.
Olivia "Hunter wait"
Hunter turns around. Olivia runs into his arms and holds onto him tightly.
Hunter "Liv, you know I didn't do this"
Olivia just holds onto him for a long moment.
Detective "sorry to break this up, but we really need to be heading back to the station"
Mason "looks like he finally got what he deserved"
Olivia "What's that suppose to mean"
Mason "that he was never good enough for you anyway"
Olivia "leave me alone Mason"
Mason "that's not what you sed the other night"
Olivia "what are you talking about"
Mason "surely you remember. You were all like sad, because you and Hunter had this huge fight. You were telling me how you thought it was over and how you couldn't be with him anymore. You went on and on for like a hour"
Olivia "I was upset. I didn't mean any of those things. I wish I could take it all back"
Mason "take what back?. The fact that I supported you when he didn't.
Olivia "It wasn't like that"
Mason "So when you kissed me"
Olivia "I didn't kiss you. You kissed me"
Mason "you didn't pull away"
Olivia "it meant nothing"
Mason "It meant something. But if you can look me in the eye and tell me you don't feel anything for me, then I will walk away and you will never see me again"
Olivia "You know ,I can't do that"
Mason "so where does that leave us"
Olivia "nothing has changed"
Mason "how do you figure that?"
Olivia "I love him and I don't think I'm ever going to feel that way about anyone else"
Mason "fine. but tell your boyfriend that purple isn't really his colour and its kind of girly if you ask me. But your into that aren't you Olivia, dating boys"
