Dex/April

Recommended Posts

I agree with the people saying they've lost their way with April, all her charm and sophistication is just gone. She's all over the place. I can't stop thinking about her and Heath and how she was with Heath and they've seem to try and right that wrong, by I don't know making her naive again, but it clashes with her sex.sex.sex attitude these days. I LOVED her in the beginning and I adored her and Dex, but now, I DREADED them getting back together, but that deep connection they had seems very shallow and very forced. Which is a shame.

On the other hand, Dex loves her and she makes him happy and I love Dex and I want him happy, so I'll suck it up.

I still think the relationship has done a very good job of ruining both characters. There's not a shred of sexual chemistry between them.We get told they're "soul mates" but their relationship seems to be built on nothing but a lot of sex and constantly saying they love each other without once sounding convincing. It doesn't help that practically every member of the other sex they speak to would make a better partner for them than each other.(Can't help thinking Lottie is being kept away from Summer Bay at least partly because she and Dexter had the kind of relaxed banter that he and April can only dream of.)They try to portray them as a sweet and innocent couple(despite all the infidelities), which only makes all the sleazy conversations about having sex with whipped cream even more creepy and awkward.Frankly, I think Dex is just clinging onto the first hot girl who's ever spent time with him without being related while April's gone for the safe option, since having sex is enough to keep him interested. There seems to be a law that every interview on the pair describes them as "quirky" even though they're not:April turns into a very ordinary whiney teenager when she's around Dexter and most of Dexter's quirks seem to be down to Charles Cottier overenunciating his lines. There always seems to be a habit of people both on and off screen declaring that they've been in love since the moment they met, which is so laughably untrue I can't even be bothered to rebutt it.

The whole storyline about Dexter struggling to recover from a brain injury could have been great but I've been turned off because of the constant focus on trying to make the audience coo over what a wonderful boyfriend Dexter is for trying to help her when he's got his own problems, what a wonderful girlfriend April is for sticking by him and what a perfect couple they make.Personally, I think Dexter is supporting her partly to prove a point about still being able to handle things and April's only sticking around because she's expecting him to magically get better.Which he probably will do but I don't want him to if it means I have to sit through them shacking up again.(April watching videos of the two of them having sex while Dexter's in a coma, even while Irene's with her, didn't really strike the emotional note intended.)In the end, the whole thing gets dragged down to the level of "April and Dexter aren't getting any", where the complex issue of renewed intimacy gets resolved by Dexter turning their bedroom into the set of a porn movie with tacky fairylights and candles for what feels uncomfortably like a seduction attempt.

I've got this horrible feeling they were only paired up because they joined the show in the same week and so there's a good chance they'll leave around the same time. That's not the most organic of storytelling decisions but sadly it means we're probably stuck with them.
