Here in South Australia, they've upped how long your on learners for, it was 6 months now it's 12 months, I'm 18 and I still havent gotten my learners haha. I'm a bit terrifed of driving plus I'm closer to public transport so I havent the need to drive yet..

bay girl - Wow! 100 hours! That's crazy. Here it is still 25 (I think) but they were talking about increasing it. Personally, I think 25 hours is too little, but 100 seems a bit excessive. But the problem is I know so many people who forge their log books already. So if they increased the amount of hours, people would just be more likely to make it up and not actually do it.

Yea, the rules are different here in QLD. And i think it only recently changed. Its now a 100 hours logged (for under 25's. 25+ dont have to) and you have to hold your learner lic for 12 months before you do your driving test. And from what ive heard, they're going to be keeping an eye on the logging and making sure people arent cheating. My father heard on the radio that they will be going as far as checking miles on cars. Which is kinda silly, because you only have to say you've been using more than the one car to drive. lol.

I got my provisional license as soon as I turned 17. I have had one or two hours of lessons every week since then, and finally passed my driving test a couple of weeks ago! :D

I'm not a maths genius, but I can work out that I had a lot of lessons and spent alot of money! It really is worth it in the end, though!

It was late 2005 when I started, so I'd be 18 at the time. Passed after 6 months, so probably 20 lessons and passed first time, so I probably had about a days worth of experience on the road.

Been driving 4 years now, 40,000 miles or so without incident (touch wood), I've even had a brief foray into France and it does play with your mind a bit.

I got my provisional three months before I was 17, (don't know how like, but anyway) I turned 17 on a wed, took my theory on the thurs, the following wednesday I had my first driving lesson (With Hillstart-he's amazing) I did ten lessons, and on May 12 2007 (I turned 17 in feb) I passed :)

Three weeks later I hit a tree, and now three years later, No (other) accidents and I'm on car number four.

(1st car I crashed, 2nd car the bottom part of the car fell off [old car nothing to do with me] 3rd car the engine blew on me and my 4th: I've had that for over a year and [touch wood] no problems :))

My future father-in-law had been driving for over 40 years when we went to France, and even he had trouble (namely, driving the wrong way up one-way streets and driving the wrong way around roundabouts, almost causing a head-on collision).

I´m 20 and and have had my license since I was 18 =) You can´t get your license before you turn 18 in Norway =) I have never been in an accident or anything but I don´t have a car where I live either! I use my dads car when I visit my parents ;P

I think that 18 as the minimum age is a good idea. It scares me that 17 year olds in the UK cannot smoke or drink, but are permitted to be in charge of a big chunk of metal moving at high speeds.

I agree! I haven't started learning to drive yet, generally because I'm quite scared & haven;t been too keen on the idea.

But I really hope to do so soon because it would be nice to be able to drive when I'm at university & placements, etc.

But I think everything should happen when you turn 18. Not all 17 year olds, because I wouldn't be one of them & I know a few others who wouldn't be, but many of them feel that if they've passed their driving test so quickly, that they're invincible on the road & they really aren't.

In fact, I think it that someone who is 40 & has passed thier test on a fifth time or something, is a better driver than that of a 17 year old who passed first time! But that's just my opinion.

^ I agree with that. I was taught by my parents when I was 16/17, even though I really didn't want to learn to drive. Weird, right? but I'm glad my mum forced me behind the wheel because once I was out of school it was so awesome to be able to drive myself to uni/friend's places/work etc. So, my advice would be make sure you at least get a few lessons through a driving school because (in Australia at least) they tell you what you need to do/know to pass the test :).

In Victoria it's 120 hours.. I got my learners before all that started so i didn't have to worry but for people who get it now it's 120hrs..I'm now on my green p's i love the freedom of driving :)
