Genre: Romance, Drama.

Summary: 5 lines max - It takes place after Jacks death and is basically a story about Tachel and Ric/Maddie. Maddie has taken a year out before she goes to college, Ric still works as a mechanic and Sally never left the bay. Lucas is away at college but comes back every now and again. This is my first fan fic. Enjoy!

Chapter 1

Maddie was tired. She couldn't sleep. She was tired, frustrated and agitated. She hated fighting with Ric. She hated fighting, full stop. When she fought with Ric though, it was so much worse. She wanted so badly to tell him that she was sorry. That she loved him. That she needed him. That she honestly could not imagine living without him. He was her everything. He was all she had left ever since Beth had died.

Sure, she had Tony. She loved Tony like she loved her father. After Beth died, he took her on as his daughter. He saw her as a daughter. He was protective over her. Of course, he would never replace her father. He knew that. She knew that. But he was somewhat like a father to her, and she was always grateful for that.

But ever since Jacks death, Tony had become a different person. He was a body with no soul. He floated from place to place, with a look upon his face that told a heartbreaking story. She knew that he would never fully recover from losing Jack. Lucas knew it too.

Lucas was another person Maddie also ran to with her problems. She loved him like a brother. The fact that they used to date was never a factor anymore. You think it would be, but it wasn't. They made their relationship work. Their caring, disfunctional, unrealistic relationship. She was so happy to have Lucas in her life. He always made time for her- even though he was always busy with his writing.

But again, Jacks death had affected him so much that he too was a different person. He wasn't Lucas. Well, yes, he was Lucas, but he wasn't her Lucas. The Lucas that was always so happy. The Lucas that carried on with life, no matter how crappy it got. The Lucas that would sit up with her until four in the morning, eating ice-cream as they bitched and moaned about life. The Lucas that would listen to her ***** about Ric - his best friend - and not be biased. That was her Lucas.

She hated that there was nothing she could do to heal the pain that Tony and Lucas felt. And Rachel, she thought to herself. Rachel was another person that was always there for her when she needed her. She had been amazing to her after the explosion at Jack and Martha's wedding. She was there for her when her bulemia was revealed. She wiped away her tears after her mothers death. Maddie was so happy for Tony when he revealed that he was seeing Rachel. She remembers how nervous he was the night he told her. She knew he didn't need to be. She knew Tony deserved some happiness after her mothers death. She hated his relationship with Naomi. It was too soon after Beth and it destroyed Lucas. However, she soon began to see that it was a mistake and that Tony didn't mean to hurt anyone. She wasn't exactly thrilled about his relationship with Jazz either- Drew had warned her about his mothers vendetta's, and she knew too well that the relationship was nothing going to last. It was all based on lust, not love.

But Rachel was different, she thought. She knew Rachel. She knew that she could make Tony happy. As happy as he could be. She saw Tony's face light up everytime Rachel walked into a room. Every time somebody mentioned her name. She knew he was in love- and she was so happy for him. She didn't feel like Rachel was replacing her mother, not at all. When Tony smiled, Maddie smiled. She hadn't seen Tony this happy in a long time. And she owed it all to Rachel.

But now, Rachel was a broken person. She was different...like the rest of the family. What happened to the strong, confident women that took everything in her stride? It broke Maddie's heart to see her struggle through each day. She watched as Rachel tried to comfort her fiance. As she tried to comfort her soon to be step-son. As she tried to comfort her. But what really broke Maddie's heart was when she watched Rachel break down over the loss of her friend. After Tony, Martha and Lucas, Rachel was the next important person to Jack. They were best friends - they lived together for years. Matilda often thought of how hard it must be on Rachel. Losing a best friend is hard enough. But watching the person you love the most go through grief that you cannot imagine must be exteremly painfull. She tried to be strong around Tony. She was afraid to grieve for Jack around him, that was obvious. And the fact that she was pregnant didn't help much either.

Matilda thought about the night Jack died. She was over at Ric's, watching Happy Feet with him and Pippa. She watched as Ric laughed at the dancing penguine- it brought a smile to her face. Pippa was hysterical as she snuggled up to Ric. Pippa adored Ric, he was her big brother after all. Matilda loved the relationship he had with Pippa. Ric was so caring, Matilda knew that one day he would be a great father. She dreamt about it often actually. Her life with Ric in the future, where they would live, how many kids they would have. She was 17, maybe it was a little crazy to think about it already. But she didn't care. She loved Ric. She was sure he was the one. He was the one. They had been through so much already, anything thrown at them they could conquer. This relationship wasn't like anything she ever had before. She knew it was different. She knew he was the one.

Matilda remembers the look on Sally's face that night. She knew instantly that something was wrong.

''I'm afraid there's been an....um....accident.'' Sally said, looking straight into Matilda's eye's.

''What sort of accident??....Who??....What??...'' Matilda's head was spinning.

''I just got a call from Rachel. Its Jack. I dont know how to say this...''Sally trailed off, still in shock.

''Sal, whats going on?'' Ric inquired, although Matilda knew deep down what Sally was trying to say.

''He's dead, isin't he?...'' The words came out in a sort of whisper, Matilda hardly recognised the sound of her own voice.

''Yes, sweetie. Im so sorry. There was nothing they could do.''

Matilda suddenly felt weak, unable to stand. Ric caught her and cuddled her close, and whispered to her that everything was going to be ok.

The rest of the night was a blur. She remembers some parts of the night so clearly. One thing she will always remember is the car journey to the hospital, sitting in the back with Ric by her side, her hand in his, as she silently talked to her mother in her mind. A tear rolled down her cheek as she thought of her mother. It was times like these that she really wished Beth was still here. She gave the most amazing advice, she thought to herself. Why was life so unfair? Thats the question she asked herself all night long.

And that was the question she was asking herself right now. She couldn't believe what was happening. Her life was such a mess and she didn't know what to do. She turned over on her side and sobbed silently into her pillow.

I absaloutly loved that part!! It kinda annoyed me no one remembered how good friend Jack and Rachel were. She was closest to him after Tony and Martha but her grief was forgotten.

Yay another Tachel fic :D I love it so far, it's really good!! Really sad as well. Great description. Cant wait for next chapter.

Even though I'm not really a Tachel fan, I still decided to have a read of your fiction, and its really good. You wrote it well, and and gave a good description on Matilda's feelings :)

Looking forward to more
