HEATH Ledger has won a Golden Globe award for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Ledger won the best supporting actor category at the awards, prompting a standing ovation from the audience of movie and TV stars.

The award was accepted by Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan. "All of us who worked with Heath on 'The Dark Knight' accept with an awful mixture of sadness but incredible pride," Nolan said.

"After Heath passed, you saw a hole ripped in the future of cinema. He will be eternally missed, but he'll never be forgotten."

Kate Winslet won the first award of the night, picking up the Best Suporting Actress (motion picture) trophy for her role in The Reader.

Launching into a relatively lengthy acceptance speech, Winslet said: "You have to forgive me because I have a habit of not winning things."

Winslet is also nominated for her role in Revolutionary Road in the best drama actress category, which appears to be a three-way contest with Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married) and Meryl Streep (Doubt). Angelina Jolie is an outsider for Changeling.

Your Say

Rob James: Are you kidding?! No depth? No acting job? No nuance? Heath WAS the Joker. He was superb. Robert Downey was a joke in Tropic Thunder. Heath definately deserved the win. ...

There was disappointment for Australian actresses Melissa George and Rachel Griffiths, who lost out to Laura Dern in the best supporting actress (TV) category.

Earlier, Australian actress Megan Fox said while walking the red carpet that she was so nervous she could vomit.

Ledger, who died from an accidental drug overdose in January last year, was considered a sure bet to win the award.

His Brokeback Mountain co-star Gyllenhaal is co-hosting the ceremony and had been tipped to accept the award for Ledger.

Ledger's father Kim had said he would not do the honours, after reports he was in a battle with film producers over who should accept.

Ledger was a favourite with bookies from Las Vegas to Alice Springs, who were offering just a few cents for every dollar punters place on Ledger for the win. Film critics and award analysts agreed.

The Los Angeles Times surveyed 14 critics and analysts and all 14 went for Ledger over the category's other nominees - Tom Cruise (Tropic Thunder), Robert Downey Jr (Tropic Thunder), Ralph Fiennes (The Duchess) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt).
