PART FOUR

8.21am

Belle ran.

She ran until she could literally not run anymore.

As her calves burned, her chest heaved and her blood roared in her ears, her legs gave out on her, causing her to fall heavily to the sand. Shaking and sobbing from lack of oxygen, she knelt on her hands and knee’s, fighting off waves of nausea and wishing she had the energy to scream and yell at God about all the injustices in her life.

After giving herself a few seconds to find some extra energy she slowly adjusted herself to be sitting properly, facing the ocean. She was still gasping for breath and aching everywhere, but she wasn’t at the diner, she wasn’t near Aden, and that’s what mattered.

Aden. She couldn’t freaking believe it. What the hell was he doing here? When had he arrived? Why hadn’t anyone told her? Perhaps it had all been a figment of her underused imagination. Yeah right.

She felt so angry, so betrayed, so damn pissed off.

She couldn’t do this. Not today, not any day. She had resigned herself to the fact that she was never going to see Aden again and had forced herself to be o.k. with that. Him being back was going to ruin everything. She could feel the small amount of progress she had made since he had been gone evaporating even as she sat in the sand shaking.

She remembered the last time she had seen him. The now constant ache in her heart that had been very new then, the heartbreaking look in both their eyes, the vicious thoughts that had run through her mind. It was only minutes later that she had been sedated for the first time.

Feeling on the verge of hysteria, Belle felt forced herself to close her eyes and slowly take ten deep breaths. It was a clichéd move for calming one down but Belle felt that it usually worked.

Reaching ten she opened her eyes and felt slightly better. She could breath properly, the blood in her ears was no longer rushing and she was almost sure there was no more chance of her vomiting. Pushing her sweaty hair off of her forehead she took one more deep breath, just to be sure before attempting to calmly figure out what to do.

She couldn’t go back to the diner, that was a certainty. Aden would most likely still be there. Could she simply sneak back home and crawl back into bed? Not a chance. Irene would be on her in minutes. That only really left one option. Stay exactly where she was.

So she did. She sat on the sand, letting the quickening breeze mess up her hair and gave her mind a few minutes break before calmly processing what had happened. Aden was back. Probably to stay. Letting that large piece of information sink in, her mind went back to her last words to Geoff as they had walked into the diner. My life cannot possibly get any worse, she had said to him.

“Then the clouds opened up and God said ‘I hate you Belle Taylor’.” She muttered humourlessly to herself.

This was the worst luck. She was having an absolute terrible day as it was, had she really deserved for it to get this bad? Did she really deserve to have to deal with this today? To sort through the large file box of feelings tucked tightly away in a corner of both her brain and heart named Aden? The very same box that had been stapled, taped and wax sealed closed sixteen months ago?

Yes. The answer was that simple. She did deserve for her day to worsen. She did have to deal with everything today and - she grimaced at what was coming - she did have to deal with that particular box.

But she really didn’t want to.

Belle scoffed aloud and rolled her eyes at her own understatement. It wasn’t so much that she didn’t want to, it was more along the lines of preferring to willing jab tiny sharp splinters into her eye balls. Preferring to eat nothing for the rest of her life but Geoff’s terrible cooking. Preferring to…

Belle sighed. There was too much that she would have preferred to have done than to have to open that box. There was too much in there for one person to go through alone. Too many feelings. Too many thoughts. Too many memories. She could picture the box tucked in some far corner of her mind, bursting at the seams with all kinds of information, information she had left untouched for a long time.

But it was time to open it. Time to sort through the box marked “Aden” and everything that came with it. If she was being honest with herself, the ‘everything that came with it’ was just as terrifying. But she couldn’t put it off any longer. Dr. Wagner had been pushing her to do this for close to a year now, and due to unforseen circumstances, it was happening.

She was going to open the box. She was going to -

Her thoughts ended abruptly as a figure slowly sat next to her.

* * * * *

8.29am

As much as she tried to calm herself down, Nicole was still completely furious over her argument with Geoff. What right did he have to say those things to her? How dare he accuse her of thinking of no one but herself? They had been dating on and off, more on the off, for three years and it now seemed as if, even after all that time, he still thought of her the way he had when she had first arrived in Summer Bay. As nothing but a self-centred little cow.

Blinking away threatening tears, Nicole continued along the beach, still in search of Belle. She was not going to cry over Geoff Campbell. She refused to let his words get to her. He was hurting and lashing out. She knew that. And she knew he was lashing out at her in particular as she was the one who had caused said hurt. It was not an excuse but she could understand, had the situation been reversed she would undoubtedly be lashing out at him.

But as much as she tried to forget his words, she was unable to push his last question out of her mind. Did she still love Geoff? Well, the answer was simple, of course she did. She was still madly in love with him and wanted nothing more than for them to go back to how they were a month ago.

But that couldn’t happen. Not anymore. Too much had happened and Geoff didn’t know about any of it.

Her thoughts of Geoff and what they used to have disappeared when she noticed the figure ahead. She paused for a moment before quickening her pace and just hoped Belle wouldn’t turn her away on the spot. Geoff had been right about one thing; they had deserved a warning about Aden being back. Unfortunately it had not been her place to give it. Not only that but her happiness at having Aden back really had taken over. By the time he had returned from his car she had decided arguing with him was not something she was ready to do. She had missed him too much and wanted to laugh and joke with him like they used.

Pushing Geoff out of her head again, Nicole reached Belle and sat next to her. They were sitting next to the first set rocks with water near their feet, both staring out at the ocean before them. The silence was somewhat unnerving but Nicole wasn’t quite sure what she should do or say. Should she call Irene? Should she turn back the way she had come and retrieve Geoff? Should she try and talk to Belle?

Deciding silence was the best option for now, Nicole sat quiet. She glanced at Belle out of the corner of her eyes but Belle’s eyes remained firmly where they were. Nicole sighed and set her eyes in the same direction as Belle’s, watching both the waves and clouds rolling in. A storm was coming, she was sure of it.

The silence was beginning to get to Nicole but she didn’t want to disturb the peace between her and Belle. They hadn’t been alone in each other’s company in a long, long time. Not since - Nicole urged that thought out of her head, annoyed with herself when it was replaced by another that, as usual, refused to be pushed out.

Flashback - 24/09/11

“More wine?” Geoff asked Nicole with a sly grin on his face as he sat next to her on the secluded section of the beach they had found.

Nicole arched one eyebrow, giving her boyfriend an incredulous look. “Geoff Campbell! Are you trying to get me drunk!?”

Geoff laughed and poured them both another glass of the sweet drink, effectively emptying their second bottle of the evening. Having escaped Alf’s 65th birthday party a few hours ago with their own stash of the supplied wine, the two were in for a fun evening. Of course Nicole had had to talk Geoff into it at first but soon found that her powers of persuasion had not vanished with her immaturity.

“Thank you Geoffrey.” Nicole said as she happily took the glass from him.

“Not a problem. Hey, do you really think we will drink this much wine?” Geoff asked, indicating the other three bottle that were embedded into the sand. “Maybe we brought too much.”

Nicole giggled, the alcohol having begun effecting her sometime ago. “Geoff,” she said in all seriousness, “you can never have too much wine.”

“I think it’s you who’s trying to get me drunk.” Geoff said, raising one eyebrow in a perfect imitation of Nicole who couldn’t help but grin in reply.

“Perhaps.” She said and took a large sip of her drink. “Do you mind?”

Geoff gave her a heated look and Nicole felt herself warm up beneath it. She had seen that look before. Every now and then, when things got particularly zealous between the two of them, Geoff would pull away and give her that heated look. Only once had she seen that look and not stayed dressed after it.

“No,” he said in a low voice that sent shivers down her warm body. “I don’t mind at all.”

End flashback.

Nicole felt herself break out in goosebumps at the memory and quickly turned to look at Belle. She needed to say something to her. Not only to make sure Belle was o.k. but to keep her own mind out of the gutter.

“Belle?” Her voice was unusually hesitant and sounded so small that for a moment she was unsure whether Belle was blatantly ignoring her or of she hadn’t actually heard her. She said her name a little louder this time and was surprised when Belle finally turned to look at her.

“What do you want Nicole?” Belle’s voice was a mix between snappy and defeated. This would not be easy.

“Are you o.k.?” Nicole asked and literally wanted to slice off her own tongue for asking such a stupid question. Of course she wasn’t o.k. Aden was back. Aden was back and Belle was defiantly not o.k.

“Are you kidding me?” Belle asked incredulously, her brows drawing together and her voice full of emotion.

“Sorry.” Nicole stammered. “Stupid question.”

Belle didn’t reply, instead turning her head to look back out at the ocean. Nicole was once again at a loss for what to do. She was not used to this. Normally she always had something to say about something.

She thought about what Geoff had said to do. To let Irene know if she found Belle. But for some reason Nicole didn’t think that she should. She didn’t think it was a good idea. She didn’t think it was the right thing to do.

It was at that moment that Nicole realised what was the right thing to do. It may not be the smartest, or the kindest, but it was right and it was long overdue.

“Belle,” she began in a strong voice, “I’m sorry for what I said after Aden left.”
