Chapter 5

“Which one’s your house?” Belle asked as she rolled the car down the quiet suburban street. Other than Belle looking him over once or twice from out of the corner of her eye, they hadn’t spoken or really acknowledged each other throughout the entire journey, except once when Belle had asked what street Aden lived on. Aden’s eyes had remained closed the entire time, his face scrunched up against the pain.

“Just let me out here” Aden gasped at her, still clutching his side with one hand, he used the other to unfasten his seatbelt.

She scrutinised him with patronising eyes “You can barely walk, just tell me which number and I’ll get your dad” she told him, an air of authority in her voice as she pulled the car over onto the curb.

Aden used all his might to sit forward, using the door handle for support “Thanks but I can manage” he informed her shortly.

She looked at him in disbelief “Are you kidding me? Look at you”

“I don’t need a babysitter” He snapped at her

She pulled the handbrake up sharply, “Then stop acting like a child” she shot back at him impatiently. They glared at each other for a moment. “Thanks for the lift” Aden spat at her, before pulling the handle towards him to open the car door, before swinging it open.

“What are you doing?” Belle stared at him in amazement as he heaved his body out of the car. Unclicking her seatbelt she quickly got out the car and watched him over the roof as he began to raise himself up. As Aden went to lean against the car door his hand slipped, and she watched as he stumbled forwards, losing his balance and landing on his side on the pavement beneath him

“Argh!” He flinched his body together against the impact it made with the ground, curling himself up slightly in resistance.

Belle rushed round the bonnet and bent down beside him “Oh my God are you ok?” She asked, placing a hand on his arm.

“What does it look like?” He snapped at her, feeling the humiliation drench over him. He flinched away from her arm, not wanting her to even look at him whilst he felt so stupid.

Belle pulled her hand back, then raised herself back up and stared down at him smugly, placing her hands on her hips. “Wow, I really underestimated you” Belle smirked sarcastically.

Aden used his arms to push against the ground and lift himself into a sitting position; he glared up at her, frustrated, humiliated and angry. He had no words for her, nothing to say t make himself feel any better.

“What number is your house?” She asked him wearily, assured he would tell her this time.

Aden looked up at her angrily, his face venomous, then the pain to his side and back kicked in again and he breathed the anger out, not caring about anything except getting rid of the pain anymore “12” he sighed at her, looking away as he said it.

Belle nodded, her face breaking into a satisfied smile “Right.” She gazed to the right of her to see the house numbers, checking which direction she had to walk in. “Wait here” She told him, stepping over him and walking off down the path.

“Like I’m going anywhere” He muttered to her bitterly, shifting slightly into a more comfortable position.

He sat and thought about the events of the day. His dad had warned him it was too soon but he’d been adamant. Everyone’s doubts and queries had only spurred him on, and he had been determined to prove them all wrong, that he wasn’t weak, that he could do this. That and he’d needed to escape the house, to escape his father’s over attentive manner. As he sat on the side of the road, clutching the side of his waist, he reflected on his father’s behaviour. At first he had liked the way his father had lavished him with attention. It was new to him, as was his dad’s sobriety. Now that a few weeks had passed though, he couldn’t help feeling there was neediness in his dad’s behaviour; that his attentiveness and care were a way of him coping with being sober. He looked up to see Belle marching back down the path. He sighed, knowing that an ‘I told you so’ lecture was probably about to ensue.

“He’s not phoning the doctor again is he?” Aden asked when Belle made it back over to him, a stern look on her face. He couldn’t see his dad behind her, and assumed he was calling the doctor to worry and speculate about Aden’s recovery down the phone, as he had done on several occasions since he’d come back home.

Belle sighed, shaking her head “No. He’s not in” she informed him helplessly.

Aden furrowed his brow at her. His dad had taken the week off of work, so it wasn’t as though he was there. He didn’t really have many friends, except for his old drinking buddies…. Aden’s eyebrows positioned themselves into a scowl at the thought. Would his dad have gone straight back to drinking after his first day out of the house? He felt something inside of him sink, hoping it wasn’t true.

“Aden?” He looked up to see Belle’s inquisitive face staring down at him.

Seeing his eyes flicker to hers she repeated herself. “I said do you have a key?” She asked him, placing a hand on his forehead gently.

He flinched away from her touch “What are you doing?” he asked her accusingly.

“You’re not hot. Have you had any paracetamol?” she asked, ignoring his question.

“Not for a while.” He admitted.

She nodded distractedly “Ok, well, have you got a key? I’ll get you inside” She told him. She was knelt down next to him now, and he could feel her eyes wonder over his body as she checked him over.

He reached into his pocket and pulled them out for her, breathing heavily from the effort of the movement. “Belle” He told her when she took the keys from him, the touch of their hands stirring something in him.

Her eyes shot up to meet his, and she saw that his face had softened. She waited for him to continue.

“I don’t think I can walk all that way” he admitted, bringing his hand away from hers once the words were out. It was as if touching her had allowed him to admit it.

She sighed “It’s alright I’ll help you” She told him.

He frowned at her “You?” he asked sceptically.

She laughed “Yes. Why?”

“You’re tiny” he told her, looking over her petite, skinny frame. He didn’t like the idea of her trying to hold him up. She barely looked like she could hold herself.

She glared at him “Come on” She told him forcefully, hooking the key ring round her finger, she grabbed his arm tightly and pulled him up.

“Belle I’m not sure…” Aden began. Before he could finish the sentence she had swooped underneath his arm, holding it firmly behind her neck, and using the power in her back to lift them both into a standing position.

Aden used all the effort he could to help her, but watched her in amazement as she started walking them both towards the door, the need for him to help her minimal.

Aden let himself fall against the front door frame, using it to prop himself up as Belle fiddled with the keys, making sure Aden’s body rested on the frame as she opened it to ensure he didn’t fall over again. Once opened Aden watched in silent wonder as she pulled his arm back round her and led him to the sofa, which he let himself fall onto.

Belle leaned over, panting for a few moments from the strain she had just put her body over, before looking at Aden triumphantly “You were saying?” she gasped at him, glowing in her victory. If there was one thing she couldn’t handle it was people assuming she couldn’t do something.

He smirked at her “Now whose acting like a child?”

“Oh Thanks Belle, Oh you’re welcome!” Belle mimicked, shifting from side to side to portray herself as two people.

“You didn’t do it to help me you did it to prove a point” He informed her, refusing to let her take any pride in her achievement.

“Fine, next time remind me to leave you crawling around on the floor won’t you” She told him, lobbing his keys at him forcefully.

Aden, who was sprawled out on the sofa, no longer under the pain of moving his body around, caught the keys awkwardly in his chest. As he looked up, ready to say thank you, Belle’s figure had gone. She had begun moving towards the kitchen, further into the house. “Hey, where do you think you’re going?” He asked her, miffed that she hadn’t asked first, but mostly because he was stuck on the sofa, unable to follow her.

She ignored him as she began routing through his cupboards. He could no longer see her but could hear as she rummaged around, and was alerted by the sound of running water. “Please, help yourself” Aden yelled out behind him sarcastically.

Belle strode back into the living room carrying a glass of water and a box of paracetamol. She held them out to him wearily, glaring at him. “Now don’t take too many, we wouldn’t want you to knock yourself out or anything” she muttered at him snidely, screwing her face up at him.

Aden looked at her, once again surprised by her actions. He placed his hand softly above hers. Once the items were safely in his grip Belle began to pull her hands away, but he tightened his grip. She stared down at him blankly. “Thank you” He whispered at her. She let her eyes finally see him, bringing them towards his. She thought back to what had happened between them that night, the night before he’d gone into hospital;

He let his eyes meet hers and she smiled at him, the warmth of it radiated his body. He looked down to see his hand still linked with hers, and he pulled himself up to sit beside her again, his head lingering dangerously close to hers.

She breathed in, her body tightening in knots at the closeness of him. She felt a tingle run through her as she looked at him and she realised there was something she’d been avoiding for a little while now.

“This is familiar” he said, smirking at her. His words jolted her feelings back into their hiding place and she drew away from him, kicking herself for what she was about to do.

“Oh come on, don’t get all shy on me” he joked, reaching to touch her hair.

She slapped his hand away, glaring at the ground “Why do you do that?” she asked him frustrated by his actions. She knew there was a good reason for keeping her distance, and he’d just reminded her of it.

“Do what?” He smiled at her, an irresistible smile that she had to look away from.

“Act like such a complete jerk just when I think we can be….” She let the sentence trail off, only just realising what she was about to say.

“Be what?” He asked her, noticing it.

She stood up, trying to escape the situation “Nothing just forget it” She muttered to him.

He stood up after her, grabbing her arm lightly “No Belle, what?” he asked again, a little more urgency in his voice.

“Look, you're gonna be late for school” She told him, trying her very best at avoidance tactics.

“Just tell me what you were going to say?” He asked her gently

“No!” She yelled at him “There’s no point when you just proved what a complete jerk you still are” she yelled to drown out the question, the answer she would inevitably have to give.

“Belle” He tried to reason softly

“Just get out”

It was the last time they had really spoken, and the memory of it stuck to them both now, trapping them.

Belle pulled her arms away from him “I should probably get back to the Diner” She told him, her eyes darting around the room nervously as she moved away from the sofa.

“Course you do” he muttered under his breath. He didn’t know if he’d wanted her to hear him or not. Either way, by the look she threw at him when she turned back round, he knew that she had.

“What is that supposed to mean?” She asked him confrontationally.

He shrugged “Nothing Belle, forget it” he replied dismissively.

“No come on, you’ve obviously got something to say, so spill it” She folded her arms, her mouth open, ready to spout angry words at him for whatever it was he was going to say. She didn’t know why she had turned back round, because she knew what he meant, but she couldn’t seem to stop herself from dragging it up again.

“Belle” Aden sighed with pleading eyes “Please, I didn’t mean it, I’m in pain, I don’t know what I’m talking about.” He explained wearily. He began struggling with the paracetamol box, struggling to open it with one hand, the other still holding the glass of water.

Belle watched him fiddle with it for a moment before tutting impatiently and grabbing it out of his hands, opening it and popping out two pills which she then placed back into his hand.

“Thanks” he mumbled, embarrassed at how dependable he was at the moment. He mouthed the tablets, tasting her on them he let his tongue roll over them slowly for a moment taking her in, before the sharp chalk taste took over, when he took a gulp of water to wash it away.

She watched him swallow the tablets, observing the sharp jolts his body made every so often from the pain from the operation. She knew if it were anyone else she would stay with them until someone else came for them, it was only her own feelings of awkwardness that were driving her towards the door. She sighed, knowing she would regret it the moment she uttered the words. “Look, I can stay until your dad gets back” she told him, taking the objects from his hands and placing them on the coffee table.

“I thought you had to get going?” He snapped at her. He knew it was unfair, but he hated feeling as though he had forced her to stay, it felt worse than her not staying at all.

“Yeah well, Roman will kill me if I leave you here alone” She explained, realising he would probably just rush round himself once he knew. She still sat down in the armchair though, determined to stay now.

“Yeah well I’ll be alright, thanks” He muttered back at her, scowling.

“Yeah that’s what you said before you fell over outside remember?” She shot at him patronisingly. Noticing the hurt on his face she decided to let it go, forcing herself to be nicer. He was, after all, still really poorly. “Look it’s only till your dad gets back” She told him kindly.

He laughed bitterly at her, raising himself into a sitting position, his back resting against one of the end arms of the chair, so that he and Belle were facing, as the paracetamol began to kick in “Yeah well you could be waiting for a long time then”

“Why? Where is he?” She asked, curiosity jolting her senses into an alert state.

Aden shrugged “If I had to guess… I’d say the pub” He told her, the disapproval resounding through the words as he stared into his lap.

Belle shrugged it off “Well he probably just went for a break, he’ll be back soon.” She reassured him, although her own voice betrayed her uncertainty. She had seen Aden’s dad at the hospital, only from a distance as she was trying to remain hidden. But even then he had seemed a bit peculiar.

“Trust me. He won’t” He told her, his voice stern to hide the hurt underneath it.

Belle cleared her throat, unsure of what to say. “Hey” she exclaimed, changing subject again “You never did open Annie’s present” She reminded him, trying to lighten the mood.

He looked up at her, having completely forgotten all about it. “Yeah” he said, scratching the back of his head “I think I left it in the Diner” he told her, guilt swamped his face at the thought that he’d lost it.

“No you didn’t it’s in the car!” She told him excitedly.

He gave her a quizzical look and she calmed down to explain it to him “I, er, I put it in your bag and in the car for you”

Aden looked down at his hands, feeling like an invalid; hating the lack of control.

“I’ll go and get it for you” Belle thumbed behind her, to the door, as she rose from the armchair, smiling at him as she left.

“Belle?” Aden called out to her as she opened the front door.

“Mmmmm?” She turned to him expectantly, but before her reactions could catch up with her she was clutching a set of keys in her hands, inches away from her face. Realising them as the door keys she raised them in gesture at him, smiling, before running out towards her car.
