Irish selection on the 23rd of February

23/Jan 2008 @ 01:18 by Sietse Bakker Irish broadcaster RTÉ will hold a televised national selection on the 23rd of February. 150 songs were delivered to the headquarters of the public television station, various media report. RTÉ's Julian Vignoles told Eurovision.tv the show will last approximately one hour. An internal committee has the undoubtfully hard, but honourable task to shortlist six songs for the televised final. The viewers have the final say on who will represent Ireland at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest through televoting.

Internet fan magazine All Kinds Of Everything reports that the University Concert Hall in Limerick will most likely be hosting the event. In 1994, the venue hosted the Irish national selection as well. Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan took victory there with Rock'n'Roll Kids, eight weeks later they won the Eurovision Song Contest for Ireland for a shocking third consecutive time in Dublin. However, RTÉ could not confirm the venue details.

The 23rd of February can truly be declared Super Saturday. Bulgaria, Croatia, Iceland, Poland, FYR Macedonia and Romania - with Ireland a total of seven countries - will all pick their Belgrade representatives, while Sweden continues the search for a potential winner in the third semi-final of Melodifestivalen 2008.

:D :D

The second one apparently has the biggest chance to win. Shame the other one isn't online, because I expect a lot from her :P

I don't even know if we have picked our entry yet. I don't think we have, I think we're still waiting for the national finale, but the semi finals are over. I can honestly say I've never been this ashamed to say I'm Norwegian.

of all the semi finale entries, and dear lord I hope none of them ever make it out of this country.

Among our proud tunes of "music" we have performers including a famous glamour model, a woman trying what we already know isn't working (singing a cliché song in the sami language), a wannabe badass wannabe punk band, and some weird, WEIRD troll thing.

I had my hopes up for Nick Carlie, but his song was just another cliché unfortunatley. Same goes for Maria Haukaas Storeng (she was a contestant in the Norwegian Idol contest of 2004 (I think it was 2004)) and Anne Hvidtsten. To be honest (and I'm almost embarrassed to admit this) I think the only song that we could have had any hope with whatsoever is the last one, the weird troll thing. At least it has something remotely close to a personality, which is a lot more than I can say for all the other songs. I don't even know if it made it to the finale though.
