Chapter 3

Martha was now in a disorientated state; she wasn’t even aware she was in labour. Whatever this nurse had given her, it was defiantly starting to kick in.

Rachel was now checking Martha’s signs; it was now time for her to have her “spontaneous birth”.

Rachel put her hands over the bump on Martha’s stomach, as she whispered, “You’ll be here soon”

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Rachel cradled the newborn baby in her arms. It was now time to make the swap.

Rachel had been keeping a baby, of which she had taken from the hospital morgue, in the fridge at home, ready to make the exchange. This baby was now to become Martha’s. Even though it was baby boy, and Martha was expecting a girl, Rachel didn’t seem to care; the doctors would just presume they had made a mistake.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Martha woke up the next morning; putting her hand over her stomach, however noticing that the bump was no longer there.

She pressed her buzzer and a nurse came in.

“Nurse Can I see my baby” Martha asked happily

The nurse looked at her and then left, Jack and Kate then walked in.

“Hey you found him, well was it a girl” she asked as Jack hugged her

A doctor then came into the cubical and closed the curtain.

“Whats going on” Martha said

“Im sorry Mrs Holden, your baby was stillborn, it was a boy, weighting 3 and half pounds and at least 2 months premature” Dr Evans said

“But the baby was overdue 5 days” Kate exclaimed

”Well often drug abuse can cause low birth weight, making the baby appear premature” Dr Evans said

“Im sorry, did you say drug abuse” Martha said shocked

“Mrs Holden what do you remember from last night” Dr Evans asked Martha,

“I was in labour 6-7 hours and then………………..then………………nothing” she cried

Dr Evans closed the other curtain

“Mrs Holden, tell me about your history with drug abuse”.

“My history?” Martha said stunned

“We tried to wake you for 8 hours, I ordered blood tests which showed very high levels of drugs in your system” Dr Evans explained

“That’s impossible, I don’t even do drugs” Martha said

“Mrs Holden, I have your blood test results right here, now while you were unconscious you delivered unexpectedly, and because of the condition of your body, the nurse was forced to cut the cord herself”.

“What condition” Martha asked shocked, still not believing this

“Your baby died in uterus some days ago”

“That’s not true, my baby kicked on the way here, tell them Kate”

”It did” Kate confirmed

“Sometimes a stillborn bay can shift and it feels like a kick”

“Listen doctor, I have given birth twice before I know what a kick feels like, now I want you to go outside and get some who knows what the hell there talking about” Martha sobbed

“Mr Holden can I have a word”

Jack and the doctor left the room, closing the curtain behind them.

“It’s not unusual for a woman to deny and accept the loss of a child”

They were both unaware that Martha could here all of this

“She’s been under a lot of stress lately” Jack told him.

“Well that can make it a lot harder, just do what you can to be there for her because the sooner she accepts this, the better for everyone”.

Jack returned to the cubical; taking a hold of her hand.

“You seriously don’t believe this, do you” Martha said stunned

“Honey, this is just as hard for me to accept as you” he said to her

“No its not, your buying this, I did not take any drugs Jack I swear”

“What do you want me to do Martha”

“Help me find our baby”

Preview……………………………..Rachel’s back at work.
