PART 4 Kate looks up when Paul re-enters the kitchen, dressed in jeans and a T-shirt. “Hey!” He grins and puts his arm around her waist, looking at the oven over her shoulder. “Still not finished?” She shakes her head, still stirring and he looks at her mischievously. “You smell nice.” “Thank you. Now sit down, you’re breaking my concentration.” “Since when do you have to concentrate to cook!” She turns around bumping into him and they look at each other tensely for a few seconds before he turns away. “I… I should probably give you work space…” “Yeah…” He moves away swiftly and sits down at the kitchen table. Kate glances at him over her shoulder. “The food will be ready soon…” Paul nods, not trusting his voice enough to speak and Kate bites her lip. “If you could just… put the kettle on…” “Sure.” “Thanks.” “Hey, Shar!” Indiana grins, rushing in as soon as Sharni opens the door. “You will never believe what almost happened this morning! Rhys was… are you okay?” Sharni nods taking the cloth away from her mouth. “I’m fine.” “Is that blood?” Sharni sighs and nods. “I don’t know what’s going on… I’ve been coughing up blood for days now.” “Have you seen a doctor?” Sharni shakes her head as she sits down on the couch, Indiana sitting down next to her. “But you have to go to a doctor, Shar! You can’t just leave this, it could be serious.” “Look, I don’t think it is. But if it doesn’t blow over soon, I’ll go.” Indiana shakes her head. “I still think you should go now. Rather safe than sorry.” “Indi, don’t go on about this please.” “Fine…” Jessica rolls to her side and looks at the guy next to her guiltily. “We really should stop doing this… If Bobby found out… It would kill him.” Mark pulls her closer, kissing her softly. “Stop worrying, Jess. Its not like either of us is going to tell him.” Jess puts her hand on his chest, gazing into his eyes. “I guess you’re right.” “I’m always right. Now come on here and kiss me!” Jessica grins and kisses him softly. “Hmm… you’re definitely right…” “I am, aren’t I?” Paul looks at Kate with a lifted eyebrow after finishing his food. “I haven’t enjoyed food this much since I lived at home! Good job, Katie!” He tugs her hair playfully and she laughs. “Thanks!” She stands up, reaching for a plate at the same time he does. The plate falls to the ground and they both kneel down, bumping their heads before starting to pick up the pieces. Kate gasps when a piece cuts her finger and red blood starts streaming out of the cut. Paul automatically lifts her finger to his lips. They share an intimate look before Kate stands up. “I have to…” She shakes her head and rushes out, leaving Paul in the kitchen, clearly confused. He sighs before continuing to pick up the broken pieces… “The truth is… I’m scared that it is serious. You know, if I’m unsure about it… at least then I know that there’s a chance that it might be nothing. But if I go… and I find out… then there’s no doubt. And that scares me more than anything. Does that make sense?” Indiana nods. “A little. But the doubt can’t be a picnic either. Just go and get it over with. Maybe it really isn’t serious.” Sharni nods. “You’re right. Maybe it’s nothing… Will you come with me?” “Of course!” “Thanks…” Indiana takes her cell phone out of her handbag and gives it to Sharni. “Call now. PART 5 “Yes… Monday?” Sharni looks at Indi, biting her lip and Indiana nods. “Yeah, Monday’s fine… okay. Vinson. V-I-N-S-O-N. Okay. Bye.” She looks at Indi again, sighing. “Okay… so there goes.” “You’ll be fine, Shar. You just have to believe that…” Tim opens his front door when he hears violent knocking against it, surprised to find Paul standing there. “I have to talk to you.” “Sure… come on in, mate.” Paul walks in, pulling his fingers through his hair. “I have a really big problem…” “What’s wrong?” “Kate and I… had a moment.” Tim frowns and looks at Paul confusedly. “So what’s the problem?” “Don’t you get it? She… there’s… I…” “Take a deep breath and then you talk, mate.” Paul breathes in and out before looking at Tim. “She’s been through a lot of messed up relationships and… I just can’t see it working out between us. It’s going to ruin our friendship.” “Do you have feelings for her?” “I don’t know!” Tim bites his lip. “Well if you’re afraid that something more between you is going to ruin your friendship, I’ll say ignore whatever attraction there is between you. You know what they say… Friends can become lovers…” “But lovers can never become friends.” Paul nods. “You’re right. I don’t want to lose her as a friend. She means too much to me. I should just… you know… get another girl. Sharni and I… we’re attracted to each other. I could see myself falling for her.” Tim frowns. “You’re not going to use Sharni to get over Kate.” “No, of course not! I’m just going to use the attraction I feel for Kate as more motivation to actually give it a go with Sharni. I mean, I am attracted to her and I have been thinking about this before Kate and I had a moment… So I’m definitely going to go for it.” Tim shakes his head. “What you just said doesn’t make sense at all.” “It does to me.” Sharni rolls her eyes when there is a knock on her door. “Indi I told you I was fine, I don’t…” She opens the door and frowns. “Paul? What are…” He moves forward, putting his arms around her waist and kisses her tenderly. “I’m attracted to you, Sharni. And I know you feel the same. Let’s give it a shot.” Jon sighs when he’s cell phone starts ringing and picks it up lazily. “Jon Sivewright… Oh hey, John! How are you? What, now? Okay, sure… I’ll be right there…” Kate looks up when Jodi sits down at the table and smiles. “Hey.” “Hey, Kate. Thanks for meeting me.” “Anytime. What’s up?” “Well… I wanted to tell you… Jon and I are together.” Kate’s eyes widen slightly and she lifts a brow. “Seriously?” “Yeah.” “Wow… Congratulations.” Jodi frowns. “You don’t exactly look happy.” “No, I am! I really am, it’s just… sudden… I didn’t see it coming.” “You think he’s too old for me, don’t you?” “What? No! Jodi, he’s not too old for you, what is age? I just… I didn’t expect it. But I’m happy for you, I really am.” Jodi grins, squeezing her friend’s hand. “So when are you and Paul getting together?” “Paul? We’re just good friends!” Kate looks down, her heart beating fast and Jodi laughs. “Are you telling me there hasn’t even been a moment or something between you?” Kate bites her lip and looks up. “Well… this morning… there was this… awkwardness… in a weird way… But I can’t go there… I just can’t.” Jon looks at John, Scott and Cameron silently. “Are you serious?” John nods. “Yes.
