PART 3

“So what do we do?”

Brad looks at Sally and she shakes her head.

“I have no idea… we can’t just leave her like this… but…”

Brad lifts a brow.

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

“Look, she needs a home… and we do have an extra room…”

“I agree… she looks pretty normal too.”

They look at Megan who is grabbing books out of the bookshelf and ripping out the back of each one.

Sally nods.

“Normal. Right.”

Brad looks at her sheepishly.

“Okay, so normal is overrated. Let’s keep her!”

Sally giggles softly.

“She’s not a dog, Brad.”

“I know, but… why am I trying to convince you, it was your idea.”

“I know. So let’s tell her.”

Brad looks at Megan who is throwing a book against the wall with force and nods.

“I think you should tell her.”

Matilda looks at Ric curiously.

“So how do you know her?”

“I don’t. I’ve seen her on the beach a couple of times – riding Blaze and something about her just… grabbed my imagination I guess. I was curious.”

Matilda rolls her eyes and laughs.

“I actually thought you were seeing someone else!”

“No! No way, I could never! I love you, Mattie. You and no one else. Okay?”

She can’t help smiling.

“Okay.”

“Besides, Sally has the come and live with us look. Pretty soon, she’ll be my little sister.”

Megan looks at Sally wryly.

“Live with you?”

“Yes… look, I know this is a lot to take in, but… we want to help you, Megan. And you can’t stay here on your own.”

For a split second, it looks as though she wants to argue, but she nods silently.

“You’re right. I can’t live on me own, me da wouldn’t have liked that. So thank you.”

Sally pulls her in for a hug, smiling happily.

“Welcome to the family then! We should probably let the police know about this and get out of here.”

Megan looks at her father’s still figure, covered by a blanket and nods.

“You’re right. And we have to bury him too. But the razza’s won’t really do good. They’ll never catch them.”

Brad frowns, putting his hand on Megan’s shoulder.

“They might.”

“No. They won’t. They’re probably on their way back to Ireland now. But me da knew it was coming, so it’s all good. I just want to take that book.”

She takes the last book on the shelf and smiles. Her smiles fades quickly and she looks at Sally seriously.

“What about Blaze? He can’t stay here on his own… and I can’t come back…”

Brad and Sally share a look, but it’s Mattie who saves the day.

“My brother, Scott, had a horse too… there’s a ranch not far from the Caravan Park, I’m sure they’ll let Blaze stay there.”

Megan looks at her and walks out to Blaze.

When Sally and co get outside, she’s standing next to the horse, whispering in his ear.

“We’ve never been apart… Will I see him everyday?”

Brad nods.

“Sure. Oh, and I hear from Ric that you’re sixteen? We have to talk about school…”

Megan frowns.

“Me da taught me at home.”

Sally nods slowly.

“Yeah, but we can’t do that. It would take up so much time and it would be better for you to be in a normal school.”

Megan nods slowly.

“Okay. I’ll go to a school. How hard can it be?”

Brad smiles at her.

“You’ll do fine. I didn’t get your surname…”

“That’s because I didn’t give it. Because you didn’t ask.”

Brad nods.

“Okay. I’m asking now.”

“What are you asking?”

“What is your surname, Megan?”

“Oh, you want to know my surname? You should have just asked. It’s Evans. I’m Megan Evans.”

Thanks you three! Here is part 4!

PART 4

“She’s very… eccentric.”

Brad looks at Sally and she laughs.

“Eccentric?”

Brad nods.

“The other words I have in mind are rude… But really…”

Sally smiles.

“She is a little peculiar. But maybe that’s just because she’s in a strange country and her father was just killed.”

“That’s the other thing… she kept talking about how they were expecting it… surely that’s not normal?”

Sally shrugs.

“I’ve noticed it too. You think he was on the run from the law or something?”

“I don’t know. She won’t say anything. When I asked her about her father and why they were expecting it, she told me to mind my own business… in no uncertain terms.”

“Really?”

Brad nods silently and Sally looks at Megan, who is saying a tearful goodbye to Blaze.

“If she had her way she would sleep at the ranch tonight… What about her mother?”

“Died at Megan’s birth. She’s all alone in the world now…”

“She seems to like Ric…”

“She does…”

Sally and Brad look on as Ric and Matilda walk towards Megan, talks to her and succeed in getting her to walk towards the car – surprisingly without having to drag her.

She gets into the car, smiling.

“I think Blaze will like it here. He seems really happy.”

Ric nods.

“Maybe it’s because there are lots of mares to keep him company…”

Megan glares at Ric.

“Oh shut your gob! Blaze is not like that!”

“Oh? Does he like stallions?”

Megan sticks her tongue out at him and Matilda laughs.

“You guys are like brother and sister already! Stop fighting, I think Blaze likes it because of the atmosphere.”

Megan nods.

“Thank you Matilda. At least someone knows something.”

Ric lifts a brow.

“I happen to know a lot.”

“A lot of blarney, yes. Seriously Ric, you talk a lot but you don’t really say anything.”

Sally and Brad both laugh and Matilda looks at Megan with a smile.

“You know, I think we’re going to get along just fine.”

Megan grins.

“So do I… Maybe living here will turn out to be all right after all…”

Ric puts his arms around her shoulders and smiles.

“You know what, sis… I think it will.”

Megan looks out of the window, smiling.

“I hope so…”

“So this is your room…”

Sally opens the door, picking up one of Megan’s bags.

“It’s not really decorated – you can add a personal touch.”

Megan nods slowly.

“Thank you. It’s bleedin’ deadly…”

Sally nods and Megan smiles.

“I mean the house… it’s brilliant… It’s so beautiful…”

Sally grins.

“Yeah… I grew up in this house… when I first came in here, I couldn’t stop saying wow…”

“That’s how I feel! It’s really something… Thank you Sally. For letting me stay here. I don’t know why you do it.”

Sally smiles gently.

“Because I really want to. And so does Ric… I think he’s adopted you as his sister before he even met you.”

Megan smiles.

“You’re all really good people. I don’t know how I can ever thank you enough.”

“You can just be a part of this family… Speaking of that… when you’ve finished unpacking you can come downstairs to meet Cassie and Pippa… and then we can take your picture!”

“Take me picture? What for? I don’t really do pictures…”

Sally smiles gently, putting her arm around Megan’s shoulders.

“It’s a tradition. Once your picture is on that mantelpiece you are a part of this family forever. And nothing can change that.”

Megan looks at Sally seriously.

“Well in that case… I guess I can make an exception on my no pictures policy.”
