Chapter 26

Dan sat anxiously in the restaurant as he waited for Amanda to arrive. They had decided to meet for dinner after being apart all day. Looking back on the moment they had separated, Dan wished he could change it. He now wished that he had gone up to the hotel room with Amanda, instead of staying down in the casino. Dan ended up losing three thousand dollars in the casino. He thought he could have won his money back, but instead he kept losing more. Now he was trying to figure out what he was going to do. He had no money on him to pay for dinner and he couldn’t tell Amanda. Plus he’d already had to take money out of their account to pay Blake last week. He didn't know how much money he had left in his account. He began to get out his wallet, but stopped when he saw Amanda coming towards him.

“Hey,” he said as he stood up and kissed Amanda as she approached the table.

“Hey,” she replied, sitting down opposite him.

He looked at her nervously as he tried to compose himself. He wasn’t sure how he was going to handle the situation, but all he knew was that he couldn’t tell Amanda about it. So many things were running through his head and he didn’t know how he was going to handle things.

“What did you get up to today?” Amanda asked.

“I’m sorry, what?” Dan asked as he snapped out of his thoughts.

“Today. What did you do?” She repeated.

“Oh, nothing, I just went for a walk and checked out the city.” He lied.

“Oh, ok,” she replied as she picked up the menu and began to have a look.

“So what about you?” Dan asked as he also picked up his menu.

“Oh, I went shopping,” she replied, not taking her eyes off the menu.

“What?!” Dan asked, looking up at her in shock.

“Shopping,” she replied, looking at him suspiciously. “I must admit, I splurged a little.”

“How much… is a little?” Dan asked anxiously.

“Well you know how much I usually spend when I shop Dan.” She replied.

“God Amanda, we aren’t made of money!” He yelled angrily.

Amanda reeled back in surprise at Dan’s hostile outburst. Dan was freaked out. Amanda had spent lots of money today, which would put him in more trouble. Plus he now had to explain his odd behaviour.

“What has gotten into you Dan?” Amanda asked, sounding quite agitated.

“Nothing,” he lied. “I’m just on edge because I’ve been thinking about Ryan, and the fact that he’s so far away.”

Amanda looked suspiciously at Dan. She didn’t believe him. There was obviously something wrong, something he was keeping from her. But she decided to go along with it.

“Ok,” she replied sweetly, “I don’t like being apart from Ryan either.”

Amanda smiled broadly at Dan, who looked back at her with an uneasy smile.

“So what do you feel like having?” Amanda asked as she resumed looking at the menu.

Peter sat alone at a bar in Sydney, drowning his sorrows. His meeting with Drew hadn’t gone very well, actually, his son didn’t want anything to do with him. As he threw back another shot of whiskey, he wondered how his own son could hate him so much. Especially since Peter was unaware that he existed, so it’s not like he abandoned him. Still, he thought, it must have been hard for a kid to deal with. Having your father turn up out of the blue after twelve years.

“Another one mate,” Peter said, pushing his shot glass towards the bartender.

As the bartender poured Peter’s drink and passed the glass back to him, he saw a wallet on the bar.

“Is this your’s?” The bartender asked as he held up the wallet.

“Nah,” Peter replied, barely looking up. “You should check the ID.”

The bartender checked inside the wallet. “Eve Jacobson,” he said as he looked at the ID.

Peter didn’t look up, even when a woman with curly long hair brushed passed him as she approached the bar.

“Excuse me has anyone found a wallet?” She asked the bartender.

“Maybe,” he replied, “what’s your name?”

“Eve Jacobson,” she told him.

“Ok, here it is,” he said as he handed her the wallet.

“Thanks,” she replied.

She looked at Peter as she began to walk away, but he never looked up. As he drank his latest shot of whiskey, his mind went back to Drew. He still wanted to be apart of his life, and with Christy abandoning him, Drew would have no one. But Peter was going to do whatever he could to help Drew out, even if he didn’t want to know him.

“You want another one mate?” The bartender asked as he noticed Peter’s glass was empty.

“No thanks,” Peter replied glumly as he got up and paid the bartender. “I’m off now.”

*****

“Mmm, that was delicious,” Amanda said as she finished her dinner.

“Yeah, it was good,” Dan said, in a daze. “What do you say we head up to the room?”

“Yeah, ok,” Amanda replied grabbing her purse, “ready?”

“Yeah,” Dan said. “Look you head up, I’ll pay for dinner and get us a nice bottle of wine.”

“Ok, see you soon.” Amanda said flirtatiously, as she left the restaurant.

“Can I get the bill?” Dan asked nervously as the waitress walked passed. “And a bottle of your cheapest white wine.”

He didn’t know how much money was left in the account after Amanda’s shopping spree. He only hoped that it was enough to pay for dinner. He checked the bill and gave the waitress his card, and sat, hoping for the best.

She returned a few minutes later. “All done, have a nice night.” She said.

Dan let out a sigh of relief. At least he was able to pay for dinner, but he still needed to make up for the money he lost. As he headed out of the restaurant, he got out his phone and rang Blake.

“Uhh, hi Blake, it’s Dan.” He said once Blake had picked up. “I’ve got a good tip…Fast As Lightning…$3000…yeah…but, could you cover me…just this once…sure…thanks.” With that Dan hung up the phone and prayed that his horse won.
