They sit down on the beach and start laughing. LUCAS: This is weird, isn't it? KAYLA: Yeah... Lucas... I like you. I really do. LUCAS: But? KAYLA: It's just... everything is so messed up and... I don't know if this is right for us. LUCAS: I understand. They take hands and she leans against him. LUCAS: We're still friends though, right? KAYLA: Of course! And maybe once I'm settled in... LUCAS: Yeah, maybe we just have to wait. KAYLA: I'm sorry if I... LUCAS: Hey, I'll be fine. KAYLA: I'm still sorry. LUCAS: It's fine! Come on, let's grab a coffee at the diner. They walk to the diner. Johnny watches them and then turns away. FLETCHER HOME Brad is sitting on the sofa. Sally sits down next to him with her hand on his leg. She smiles at him. SALLY: Everything seems to be going well all of a sudden. BRAD: Yeah, I'm so happy. my life is becoming perfect. I have a wonderful woman by my side, and a daughter that would do any father proud! Sally leans over and they kiss. The door opens and Kayla comes in. Sally pulls away from Brad. SALLY: Hey! That was quick! Where's Lucas? KAYLA: Home. We... we decided to be friends. BRAD: I'm sorry... are you okay? Kayla sits down next to Brad and he puts his arm around her shoulders. KAYLA: I'm fine. It's better this way. I need to settle in first. BRAD: Okay... I understand that. KAYLA: Besides, we're still friends. SALLY: Maybe once you're settled in... KAYLA: Yeah, that's what we said too. I... I'm going to lie down for a bit. She leaves. Brad and Sally look at each other concerned. SALLY: You look worried. BRAD: I am. SALLY: Let her become Kayla first - before she becomes KaylaandLucas. BRAD: You are a smart woman, Sally Fletcher. SALLY: I know! They kiss. UPSTAIRS Kayla looks down before going into the bathroom. LIVING ROOM Brad stands up. BRAD: I'm going to grab us dinner at the diner. Then you don't have to cook tonight. SALLY: Sounds great! Brad leaves. Sally sits back with a smile. AT THE DINER Irene is standing behind the counter. Brad enters. BRAD: Hey Irene. IRENE: Hello love. What can I getcha? BRAD: I'll just have 7 specials, thanks. IRENE: Coming right up. She sticks her head into the kitchen and tells Leah. Then she turns back to Brad again. You have a charming daughter. They don't notice Johnny coming in. He stands behind Brad. BRAD: Kayla? When was she here? IRENE: She came in with young Lucas a while ago, they grabbed a coffee. She's a real sweetie! BRAD: Yeah, I'm glad we're getting along now. She's a great kid. IRENE: She is. She hands Brad the food and he turns around, bumping into Johnny. JOHNNY: Hey teach. BRAD: What are you doing here? JOHNNY: I got bail. For good behaviour. So I decided to come and say hi. BRAD: Just leave, Johnny. You have no business here. Brad walks past Johnny, trying to ignore him. JOHNNY: Oh, MR Armstrong... Cute daughter you've got. I might even decide to get to know her. BRAD: You stay the hell away from my daughter Johnny. Or I swear I will make you regret ever setting a foot here. Brad comes in with the dinner, an angry frown on his head. Sally looks up. SALLY: Brad... what... BRAD: Sorry. There was a... que at the diner. SALLY: Okay... Ric and Rocco are upstairs, I don't know where Cassie is... BRAD: Okay. SALLY: Is everything all right? BRAD: Everything's fine, Sal. SALLY: Well are you sure? BRAD: Yes. I'm going to go get Ric and Rocco... KAYLA: I'll do it! She stands up and picks Pippa up from the ground. You want to go get Ric and Rocco too? PIPPA: Yeees! She giggles and snuggles up against Kayla. Kayla laughs and they walk up. SALLY: Now will you tell me what's going on? BRAD: I ran into Johnny. SALLY: What? How is that possible? BRAD: He got parole. He said things... about Kayla. SALLY: What things? BRAD: Like how he would get to know her and so on. I'm scared Sal. What if he tries to get to me through her? SALLY: Are you going to warn her? BRAD: No - that's what he'll expect. I'm just going to leave it... SALLY: Are you sure that is what's best? BRAD: Yeah. Sally puts her arms around his middle and he rests his head on hers. IN HOSPITAL. Martha is lying in a hospital bed. Jack is sitting next to her, holding her hand. Rachel is standing opposite them. JACK: So she'll be okay? RACHEL; She'll be fine. JACK: When can she come home? RACHEL: I want to keep her here for two more nights. Then I'll let her go. JACK: Thanks Rache. Rachel leaves and Jack kisses Martha's hand. JACK: I was so scared that you weren't going to be okay. MARTHA: Well I am. JACK: I love you Martha. MARTHA: I love you too. JACK; We've waisted so much time. Can... can we try again? MARTHA: Of course. They kiss. ON THE BEACH Cassie is sitting there. Lucas walks to her and sits down next to her. LUCAS; You look like I feel. CASSIE: Thanks a lot. LUCAS: What happened? CASSIE: Rocco Cooper happened. LUCAS: What did he do? CASSIE: Except for find a new girlfriend, nothing. LUCAS: What? A new girlfriend? CASSIE: Yeah. Some new girl in the Bay. Jane someone. LUCAS; Well Kayla decided to be just friends until she finds her feet. CASSIE: How pathetic are we? LUCAS: Words can't describe it. They laugh sadly. Cassie stops laughing when she sees a petite black-haired girl walking along the beach. Lucas follows her eyes. LUCAS: That's Jane? CASSIE: Yeah. Rocco couldn't keep his eyes off her. Let's just go.
