Chapter 9

Much to Peter’s surprise – although certainly to his delight – Clare didn’t immediately pull away from his kiss. All right, she didn’t exactly show that she was madly in love with him, but it was more than enough. She seemed at first to hesitate, but just when he was about to pull back, worried about making her uncomfortable or angry, she moved her lips slowly and kissed him back softly. Peter kissed her lovingly, feeling a shiver down his spine – this was amazing! But then, when he pulled her in close to him, she suddenly seemed to get a fright, and she pulled quickly away from him, breathing heavily.

“What are you doing?” she asked him breathlessly. He didn’t understand.

“What do you mean?” he said. “You wanted it as much as I did – you kissed me back!”

“Well, I shouldn’t have done that,” she said, sounding anxious as she stood up quickly and took a few steps back from his bed. He couldn’t figure out why she was acting so oddly.

“Clare …” Peter started to say, but she held up a hand to stop him.

“Please, Pete,” she said. “Just don’t, okay? I just, I can’t handle it right now. It’s all just too much. I’ll be downstairs if you need me for anything, okay?”

“But, Clare –” Peter said again. “Why are you being like this? Surely this just goes to show that there is still something between us? We can’t ignore what we’re feeling!”

“I have to!” Clare cried out, looking upset. “I have to ignore it, Peter! I can’t let myself feel this way about you when all this is still going on – you’re still not well, and I’m meant to be looking after you. And we’ve only just got back to being friends! You’re the best friend I’ve ever had, and I don’t want to lose that. But that means that we can’t do this – we can’t let ourselves get involved, and get hurt all over again. It’s not right.”

“How can you say this isn’t right?” he demanded. “You know you felt something between us there, or you wouldn’t have kissed me back. Don’t run away from this.”

“I do care about you, Peter, but right now I can’t be in a relationship with you. Too much has happened lately. I’m sorry.”

Before Peter could say anything, she had left the room and closed the door behind her. He slumped back against his pillows, confused. What exactly was going on? He loved her; that much was for certain. And it seemed like she cared for him too. So what was stopping them from being together? She said she forgave him. And that kiss had only made him more certain that she did – she couldn’t have kissed him like that unless she really meant it. But why was she being so stubborn? Clare had always been careful with her emotions, he remembered that much – but she had been giving him signs all over the place that she wanted to be with him. And he wanted to be with her. It all seemed to fit – so why was she shying away when things started to happen? He sighed heavily. It was just like when they had first gotten together, he thought, at the Police Academy. Things had been so much easier then; the world was his oyster; there was nothing that could stop him in those days – except Clare. The first time he saw her, he knew she was special. He had loved her before he’d even seen her face, he thought, laughing. Something about her always turned him into a nervous wreck – back then, even more so than now …

Chapter 10

Note: The next few chapters will be written as flashbacks, to give the background information about how Peter & Clare first met and got together at the Police Academy when they were younger.

He had just turned nineteen when he had gone to the Academy. And he had been looking forward to it since he was about eleven. Being a cop was the only thing he’d ever wanted to do, ever since he was a little kid. His parents didn’t understand, of course – so finally breaking away from their negativity and getting somewhere in his chosen career was the best thing that had ever happened to him. On his first day he had met almost everyone in his class before lunch – everyone was as excited as he was to be there. But one person he hadn’t yet met was the gorgeous blonde sitting in the café just three tables down. He had gone in for lunch with a couple of his new mates, and then he had seen her. Sitting with her friends, chatting and laughing, flipping her gorgeous blonde hair over her shoulder … she was perfect. And that was just from the back! Then when she got up to leave, she had to walk past him to get out, and he saw her face for the first time. She had shot him that killer smile of hers on the way past, as her hand brushed softly off of his leg, sticking out a little from under the table. And he was a goner. He had made some pathetic attempt to smile back at her, wanting to seem cool, calm and collected …

… And had promptly spilt his coffee all down his shirt. Perhaps the most embarrassing moment of his entire life, he thought now, laughing at the memory. But Clare hadn’t minded. She had laughed merrily – what a beautiful laugh she had – and passed him a bundle of napkins form the counter next to her. And then she had leant right over him …

“Good thing this lousy place serves their coffee cold,” she had whispered in his ear. “I’d hate for you to get burned.” And then she had flashed her smile at him again, and she was gone. Just like that. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on, he had thought at the time. He didn’t even know her name.

It was five whole days – five agonisingly long days – before he saw her again. He was running late into one of his lectures, on the Friday morning, and when he hurried in he accidentally bumped into someone. Looking up, he realised it was her. All he remembered looking back on that moment was staring at her like a fool as she quickly picked up her books and got into her seat. He had gathered his own things quickly and slipped into the seat with his name on it – to his delight, the seat right next to her. Alphabetical seating had its advantages after all! He hadn’t managed to see her name card, however, and at the end of the lecture she was one of the first to leave. He had hung back, knowing he would never catch up with her anyway. The lecturer had offered students the use of the empty hall for the next period for study, and he was the only one to accept this offer. Which suited him just fine anyway – he preferred peace to study.

Almost half an hour had gone by in complete silence. What had he even been thinking of? It was his first week – he ought to have been out socialising, not locked in an empty lecture room poring over textbooks. But just as he had gotten up, preparing to leave, he had heard a noise at the rear of the hall. And there she was – she had come through the back door and was coming down the steps towards him, a smile on her face. He had felt himself turning red, and had looked quickly away from her as she came to his side.

“Baker, isn’t it?” she had said, smiling. “Peter Baker, from Molumby. Am I right?”

“Yes, actually, you are,” he had said, impressed. “And you’ve gone out of your way to stop me finding out anything about you, even your name. Hardly seems fair.”

“Life isn’t fair, Peter Baker,” she had told him. “Besides, what difference does my name make? Really, why does it matter? It’s just a name. It’s nothing to do with who I am.”

“So basically you don’t like your name, then?” She had laughed at that. What a laugh.

“I don’t mind it,” she said honestly. “But I’m much more interested in you than I am in myself right now. In fact, I’m very, very interested in you …”

She had been very close to him then. But she didn’t stop there – she slid her arms around him, kissing his neck softly. He hadn’t known how to react: she was still a total stranger. On the other hand, he had felt something for her he had never felt before. What was he meant to do? She didn’t seem to need him to answer that, as she pushed herself up against him, kissing him on the lips now; slipping her tongue inside his mouth; running her hands all over his body. He couldn’t believe how forward she was – she was kissing him having barely even spoken two words to him. But she was an amazing kisser (so not much had changed there), so he gave up worrying about whether he was doing the right thing, and kissed her back passionately.
