ste Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Some of the suggestions have been utterly rediculous in this thread. Yes, clearly, some characters have been obvious replacements for others. But it doesn't mean that for every character who leaves, the next arrival is their replacement! Duncan/Seb I agree with as a good example of a replacement. They were the same age, they both interacted with the same group of characters (friends with Nick, dated a Sutherland girl), they both had similar relationships to other characters (Alf's son / Fisher's grandson). So clearly Seb was the replacement for Duncan as he fulfilled all the criteria that Duncan had. Colleen/Ailsa makes no sense at all! Despite the fact they were on the show together for over a year, Ailsa's role was: Diner owner, foster mother, family woman with tragic past. Colleen's role in the show is: Town gossip, waitress, comedy character. How on earth you could call Colleen Ailsa's replacement is beyond me. Of course in a thread as vague as this, and on a forum like this, almost everyone has a different understanding of what this topic is all about. Posts like "Rebecca replaced Pippa" are true in the respect that Rebecca fostered Pippa's children after she left, but that's not what this topic means. At least not to me.

Teenage-monkey really should have quoted teh post they were referring to, especially since it's not even on the same page as their post! That way, I wouldn't have been confused!
Josh Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 About a page back, I meant to say that Natalie replaced Pippa, not Shelley. Sorry about that. With Ailsa/Colleen, I'm looking at age groups in particular, and If you look at the Departures and Arrivals for 2000, it lists Colleen for Arrivals, Ailsa for Departures. And if any others don't make sense, I keep telling you that I know nothing about anyone before at least 2001. I suppose Seb makes more sense there than Max, but in the previously mentioned circumstances, I can't find anywhere to put Nick, so who else can come before Max? And I can't even find anyone for before Jade either.
Ryan Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Well sometimes that line of thought will have to end because the first credits has 15 people in them and there's been up to 23 at one point.
dan Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 I've spent hours trying to work it out and my mind ended up spinning! The point about cast size changing is an important one but on some occasions the replacement is being brought in before a character has left so the cast could be bigger at times without affecting this theory. It threw up one startling thing actually, Bobby could only have been replaced by ..... Irene!!! They both owned/ran the diner in their time so this is more logical than it sounds. When Neville was axed along with Floss he wasn't replaced, Floss was replaced to an extent by Morag who then wasn't replaced. Celia also wasn't replaced. This is because over the first few years they were trying to make the show younger than when it started. Around 1996/7 and again around 1999/2000 characters seem to arrive unordered and some leave unreplaced as the structure of the show is changed each time. If people have separate stnts they could well be in different lines. Marilyn 3stints! Jesse 2! Steven 2! Matt 2! Just had a thought could Irene's character have shifted to replace Ailsa and then Colleen replaced the older (or younger I suppose) version of Irene?
Josh Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 Thank you dan! I'm fairly happy to have found an alternative for Colleen, because up until now I hadn't really thought of Irene having moved up in age group. I've changed it already But Bobby was one of the kids when it started, so she can't have moved up that far. At the moment, I'm thinking Marilyn from her first stint on the show. Then, of course, where's her second one? I've managed to keep Jesse all in one line so far: It goes Jack, Jesse, Jude, Harry and then Jesse again. Ryan, I realise that that line of thought has to end, but part of this is seeing if I can find links to all 17 characters from the start (In the pilot there were 11: TOm, Pippa, Frank and Steven, Carly and Lynn, Sally, Alf and Ailsa, Neville And Floss. I guess Don and Celia, Martin and Lance, Roo and Bobby can be included too) I've got four current characters who go back to the start: Irene-Pippa, Alf, Barry-Don and Beth-Pippa. Come to think of it, why aren't Lance and Martin included in the 1989 version either? or Matt?
