  5. Coronation Street's Steve McDonald has been voted as the nation's favourite soap character in a national newspaper poll. The Rovers Return owner, played by Simon Gregson, triumphed over long-running EastEnders character Dot Cotton (June Brown) and Weatherfield's Blanche Hunt (Maggie Jones) in a survey carried out by The People. Gregson, who made his debut on the show in 1989, told the newspaper: "Oh my God, I am chuffed. I'm delighted people enjoy watching Steve and the scrapes he gets into. And I'm pleased people like to watch him as much as I love playing him." Runner-up June Brown added: "It's great to know I'm appreciated." Coronation Street was named as the top soap in the poll, beating EastEnders by one percentage point. Emmerdale and Hollyoaks followed in third and fourth place respectively. The results also show that Corrie is preferred by viewers in the north, Scotland, Wales and the Midlands. However, in London, EastEnders outrates its rival by two to one. An ITV spokeswoman said: "We are delighted viewers in the north remain loyal to Coronation Street. I guess they affiliate themselves with us because of the accents on the show and because viewers can associate themselves with the characters." She added: "We do have a big following in the south. But it's nice to know from this survey that we also have a big following in the Midlands and in Wales. That is fantastic."
  6. New EastEnders actress Nina Toussaint-White has admitted to a history of drugs, violence and alcohol on social networking site MySpace. The 23-year-old actress - who joined the BBC soap last week as Bradley Branning's (Charlie Clements) new love interest Syd Chambers - branded herself as "Nina the nutter", before going on to reveal that her favourite pastimes included "acting, keeping fit, eating and most importantly getting w**kered". Although having not visited the site for at least a year, her profile page featured admissions to having used cannabis and having beaten someone up. Other confessions included that she swore too much and that her favourite drink was vodka and apple juice. The actress's agent told The Mirror: "[Nina] has not used this internet site for over a year." They added: "[she] was immature and naive when she created her profile and she has grown up a lot since she last used the site and is focused on making a success of her career." An EastEnders spokeswoman said: "This is a private matter for Nina." Earlier this month, Kara Tointon - who plays Dawn Swann - found herself at the centre of a Facebook fakery incident when a user set up a bogus account in her name and began to impersonate her.

  10. Coronation Street may be sold off to an independent production company due to severe cutbacks at ITV, it was claimed today. The Sunday Express reports that the long-running soap may no longer be produced by Granada Television because ITV is struggling to cope with the impact of the recession. It has also been alleged that, as an "interim measure", Emmerdale may start to be made in Manchester rather than by Yorkshire Television in Leeds in the near future. An insider told the newspaper: "It's fairly certain that Leeds will be closed and Emmerdale will be run from Manchester, which is effectively the end of Yorkshire TV." Last week, ITV's executive chairman Michael Grade admitted that the financial state of commercial television had been "severely challenged" by the economic downturn. "I have seen the cycle come and go over the years," he explained. "I have never seen anything quite as dramatic or quite as profound as this in terms of the effect on advertising revenues." An ITV spokesman confirmed that the broadcaster is currently holding talks over its future, but dismissed claims that its production wing would be closed altogether. He said: "As you know, operational reviews are taking place to ensure that ITV is in the best shape to meet the unprecedented challenges facing the economy, but there are no plans to drastically scale back, or shut, ITV Studios."

  16. from tv week magazine. Oh god this is beyond a joke. They annoy me so much , they should all be just axed.None of the 2 of them have any purpose whatsoever only to annoy us when they come on screen. Dawn should have been axed along with the rest of her family and what Minty and Garry are still doing there is beyond me

  19. Coronation Street actors Jack P. Shepherd and Wanda Opalinska have become parents. Shepherd's 23-year-old partner Lauren Shippey gave birth to an as-yet-nameless healthy baby girl at 8.38am today, while Opalinska welcomed son Rafal into the world at 12.39pm yesterday, weighing 7lb 5oz. A Coronation Street spokeswoman said: "We wish them all well." Earlier this week, Alison King (Carla Gordon) gave birth to a 6lbs 7oz baby girl with boyfriend Adam Huckett. However, the week of celebration was marred yesterday by the sad announcement that Kym Marsh (Michelle Connor) and boyfriend Jamie Lomas's new-born baby son Archie passed away seconds after being delivered. Shepherd, Opalinska and King - who play David Platt, Vicki Dankowska and Carla Gordon in the Weatherfield soap - were three of a number of expectant parents. Julia Haworth (Claire Peacock), Ryan Thomas (Jason Grimshaw) and Andrew Whyment (Kirk Sutherland) all became parents over the last year. Meanwhile, Jane Danson (Leanne Battersby) is expecting in March, while Graeme Hawley (John Stape) is due to become a father in June. These guys are busy having babies. There will be too many people on maternity leave Makes it all the more sadder that Kym Marsh lost her child
