Entrepreneur. Rock Star. Stud. Legend. I cannot believe that H&A fans have overlooked Martin 'Legend' Dibble in the Character/Actor forum. I therefore felt compelled to add the character that kept me glued to H&A back in the early days. To some he was a village idiot. But the Lothario of Summer Bay was a rock star with Image, an entrepreneur and most importantly he was Lance Smart's best friend. Not many people in Summer Bay can lay claim to these facts What are your favourite Martin (and Lance) moments? What did you like/dislike about Martin? How sad did you feel at his departure, hopping onto the bus to join the army and leaving poor Lance to fend for himself? Please share your thoughts....

Martin and Lance are nothing like the Braxtons......... i don’t remember them kidnapping/killing anyone or pushing drugs (save for that time they were going to sell dope at the dance but Bobby and Frank caught them making it and made them smoke it! )

I'm not sure whether Don was ever intended to be a main character as he was quite a nasty character at the start of the series but as time went on and certain events occurred like Carly's rape and then later Alan's death he mellowed out quite a lot and became a likeable character without necessarily losing that hard edge about him. Don was one of my favourites but he changed a lot after getting together with Marilyn. He was no longer the authoritative and nasty character he could be before he was with Marilyn. Personally I actually prefer Don in his earlier days just after he mellowed but I always appreciated the fact that the character was around for 15 years! It was a strange feeling initially when he was gone in 2003 but he made many guest appearance returns later that year, in 2004, 2005 and of course his thorough guest stint in 2007 which lasted about two months from memory.

The first time we saw Fisher act like a Dad to Bobby even before the reveal was when he tried to stop her bailing after Frank's accident. Surprisingly, I think Don and Maz were believable for the short time they were together. It just sucked as just when things settled down for them, it all went wrong (Naturally in soapland). He did save (or try to) Will from a kicking at the hands of Kane + friends and pretty much was crusading to help Alf during the tumour business. Seb (although a lot people didn't like him) gave Don a new leash of life to a degree. I reckon the character outline was in place from about '99 when Alan's book popped up again but wasn't fully realised until 2001. Back to the Piano stunt, That had to have been made of the CHEAPEST matchwood available as it pretty much shattered on impact! Don was rather prickly and probably thought a family of waifs and strays would "lower the tone" of the area, an attittude not unlike Mrs. Mangel on that other show on the other channel across the state line

^I think Fisher showed development before becoming a regular. I don't know episode numbers off the top of my head, but after initially handling the situations badly, he did show something of remorse and an acknowledgement that things aren't always black and white after Carly's rape and the Nico situation, for example.

^Yes, he isn't with June anymore. His last stint made it obvious that he still holds very strong feelings for Marilyn, which makes it all the more out of character for him not to return to the bay. There is always a place for past characters - it's up the the writers/producers to integrate them back into the current format. Whether they can do it well or not is another matter, but almost any past character can be brought back into a show like Home and Away. The success depends on whether or not the writers/producers know who the characters are and how to write for them. For example, I could easily see every single storyline that happened between Maz and Fisher, happen in the current show - but it's a matter of priorities and whether or not those in charge are familiar with the couple and how and why they were loved (by most of the audience).

Norman will be 76 in March, Don being 8 years younger. I dont think Flathead would fit in now with all the youngsters dominating the show, and he is probably happy living in the Whitsundays with June and goin travelling away from the dangers of Sumemr Bay lol. Alf is a glorified extra so I dont think Don would do much apart from maybe have a yarn with Alf about the old days. The days of Flathead being the Summer Bay High uncouth Principal turned nicer Principal are long gone.

He had more brains than Lance, but that's not saying a lot! Lance and Martin play a huge part in my enjoyment of the show during the early years. Great double act and I particularly liked their storylines during 1988. I hate to be so cynical and I hope I'm wrong, but I get the feeling the writers wanted to keep that daft threesome with Maz but wanted to shift their brains up a gear as well as introduce more actors who could be seen as 'hot/sexy' with the abs and surfing etc So Lance and Martin got the chop sadly. That's not to say I don't like Matt and Adam - the two of them with Maz are brilliant. I reckon the current show would greatly benefit from the Martin/Lance type character. Vinnie also proved to be really popular and he was very similar to Martin, they shared some good scenes when Martin returned for Sally's wedding. I also really liked how the writers had him stick around for a couple of weeks if I'm not mistaken (as they did Lance a few months earlier) rather than just a few days. I totally agree with you, what I would give for Martin and Labce's return in 2012.... And Vinnie is one of my faves in the latter series because of his 'Martin Dibblish' ways (although they developed his character much further than they ever did Martin).... I think they've somewhat 'dumbed down' Adam recently to fill the gap of Marty & Lance leaving. Adam looked much more intelligent in his early days..... Summer Bay is just not the same anymore, I can't watch it with the same level of enjoyment. Someone suggested that Dex provides the comic relief role at times but it's not on the same scale.....

I miss Lance and Martin. I think they were trying to create a double act with Adam and Matt. I like them but they are not the same as Lance and Martin. Martin was the brains behind most of the schemes. I felt sorry for him when Marilyn got him to move out. It was funny in episode 182 when he spiked Donald's water bag and Celia drunk it and got really drunk. I enjoyed it when he returned for Sally's wedding and the episode where the boat sank in 2002. It's a shame him and Lance didn't stay on for longer
