Home and Away Weddings DVD - A Review

As a follow up to the Romances DVD released a couple of months earlier, a second DVD focusing on the Weddings (and those that didn't happen), was released.

One of the problems with the first DVD was that the subject matter chosen was so broad that nothing felt like it was covered as it should have been due to the infinite number of couplings there had been. However focussing on a narrower spectrum such as Weddings helped this DVD immensely.

Hosted by Kate Ritchie, the weddings are covered in chronological order, going from Alf and Ailsa's eloping within the first couple of months of the show, through to Graham and Amanda's marriage in the 2005 season finale.

Unlike the Neighbours Defining Moments DVD of a few years previous which featured full episodes, we are only given a few clips here and there, with most weddings getting only 3-4 minutes, though thankfully this time, the makers managed to work out that some marriages were more important than others and so we did get more Shane and Angel than we did, say Rebecca and Travis. (I didn't think much in Travis' taste in music either, but I digress).

There was background information and clips given to most of the relationships which enabled to at least know how these people had met etc, rather than throwing us in and saying here's two characters that you've probably never heard of before getting married.

A similar format could work well with births and deaths, though the current rate of deaths on the show may require a box-set. This DVD was a definite improvement on the last one.

I do have a few minor criticisms. First of all, Selina and Steven's near wedding from 1997 was completely forgotten about and also some of the original music had been changed.

However, knowing the problems that DVD's sometimes have getting the necessary music rights and stuff, I can't be certain whether this was a decision they were forced into or if someone just decided it would be nice to change the music.

Finally, the bonus episodes were Leah and Vinnie's wedding. Now, I like Leah and Vinnie, during their one and half years together they were a really refreshing couple. However, when you think of Neighbours weddings, you will in most probably think of Charlene and Scott getting married in 1987. Do the same with Home and Away, you are probably like to think of Shane and Angel as the defining wedding moment. There's nothing wrong with Leah and Vinnie's wedding, just the feeling that there was a better one to choose.

Also considering, that the Pilot bonus material was around 90 minutes long last time, it would have been high possible that they could have squeezed another two episodes on the DVD.
