Goodbye Sally

Goodbye Sally

The Storyline

Explaining Sally's exit storyline is no easy task because it was not made up of one single thread but the culmination of a number of storylines and developments which led towards her exit.

Summer Bay as her safe place

As detailed here, Sally as a character has always suffered from insecurity and self loathing. A lot of bad things have happened in her life and when each of them happened they stripped away a little bit of her confidence and security. Being a fighter Sally had always picked herself up and carried on, despite life's knock backs. Despite everything, one thing that had always been a constant for Sally was the presence of Mr Stewart but last year saw him become a part of the bad things. When he accidentally knocked down little Pippa, it broke down Sally's last shred of stability. I can't put it any better than Sally herself did.

"He was my rock. Mr Stewart has been the one constant in my life since I was a little girl. When I came here with Tom and Pippa I was still lost and I'd already been through this huge upheaval in my life and coming here was just another one. When I look back I just realise how little I was and how much I needed something solid to cling to. This place became that and Mr Stewart was the biggest part of it even when everybody else left, even Pippa, he was always there. I trust him with my life, I trusted him with my daughter's life and he let me down. I told him he shouldn't drive the car, he knew he shouldn't get behind the wheel and he just *breaks down* Now it's taken away my safe place and I'm so angry about it and I just want it back, I just want everything to be back the way it was. I just want to feel safe again Leah."

sal_alf_hospital.jpgMilco is real

Milco was the imaginary friend, conjured by a child who had seen too much heartbreak, to comfort her when she felt scared or lonely. Milco was a strong presence in Sally's life after her parents died and she was taken from her grandmother and continued to play a huge part when she first struggled to adjust to Summer Bay. In the following year or two Milco made regular appearances whenever Sally felt threatened or something upset or scared her. As she settled in Summer Bay Milco's appearances became less frequent and when The Fletchers asked to adopt her, he disappeared altogether. This year, homeless man Miles arrived in the bay asking after Sally and as she helped him out it seemed they had a connection. Eventually Miles told her the truth, that he was Milco, her twin brother. As the imaginary Milco had been such a comfort to a young Sally, the real Milco was a comfort to her as an adult. In the aftermath of Johnny stabbing her and her near death experience, Sally then lost her job and her stability was once again threatened. The existence of Milco gave her the strength to fight back, just as her imaginary friend had done when she was a child.

Her Near Death Experience

Dying on the operating table Sally met her original foster father Tom who showed her just how much she had going for her in life. He showed her what she would be missing and how much she would be missed if she were to die. He also gave testimony to her belief that she would one day be reunited with Flynn and planted the seed in her head that she might one day leave Summer Bay. With things on her return happening just as Tom had said they would, Sally was seen constantly speculating about what circumstances might cause her to leave the bay.

The Decision

Travelling had been something Sally had mentioned before as a teenager growing up and whilst married to Flynn. Despite mentioning it though she had never shown any inkling to leave the Bay, feeling a strong emotional tie to it. When Alf knocked down Pippa, Sally was left feeling that The Bay wasn't quite the safe, secure place she had always seen it as. The loss of her job, the breakdown of her relationship with Brad and Ric reuniting with Matilda all meant that she was no longer as tied to Summer Bay as she had been. The arrival of Miles and his love for Summer Bay gave her the strength to leave the place she loved behind, in the knowledge that the person the most like her, would be there to look after it in her place. Cassie's recent trauma with HIV, seeing her need and desire to strike out on her own and her inclination to travel gave Sally the impetus to finally take the next step in her life. Without all of these factors and the strength of Miles's support, it was unlikely that Sally would ever have left Summer Bay but with all this in place and Tom's prediction in the forefront of her mind, Sally made her decision.

Leaving the Bay

Sally's farewell was spread out over not one but two episodes and will possibly go down in Home and Away history as 'the most comprehensive and emotionally moving departure for any character in the history of the show.' (Jamiehugh)

sal_floss.jpgFirst stage in her goodbye was the arrival of old friend Floss McPhee and the concert organised by Miles and held in her honour. Arriving at the school she was treated to a standing ovation as her past pupils created a walkway for her, clapping and paying tribute to a much loved teacher. At the end of the walk way she was met by those closest to her and led to her very own throne type seat at the front of the hall. She was then treated to a number of performances and speeches from her ex pupils, MC'd by the wonderful Miles. Next up was Ric's big surprise, the arrival of her foster mother Pippa and foster sister and brother Carly and Steven, who joined her on her throne to watch as a group of pupils, led by Annie, sang a fitting and moving goodbye to her. The concert ended with Sally's speech, a tearful thank you and goodbye that many felt was as much from Kate as it was Sally. During the speech she locked eyes with the friends who had been important to her including Irene, Leah and Colleen.
After the concert a party was held in her honour at the new Pier Diner and she said her goodbyes to her friends and included Miles as part of her family. Watch the concert episode

sal_pip_carly_concert.jpgWith the caravan park being robbed at the end of the last episode, Sally sat with her family on the floor and reminisced about the past. She discussed the possibility of putting off leaving but Miles, Ric and later Pippa talked her round. In a touching scene with Pippa they talked about how hard it was for Pippa to leave Summer Bay and how the time was right for Sally to move on. She later was seen on the beach contemplating and didn't see Alf watching her, unable to approach her. She received a call from Morag wishing her well and in a scene with Carly, she reminisced about how time changed them all. In a touching scene with Miles they talked about what the world had to offer her and that Miles would be there to look after the house. Sally then handed him some deeds in which she had signed half of the house over to him in the knowledge that he was the future of the house. After an emotional hug Sally told him he had given her the strength to go through with moving away and they both thanked the other for giving them back their lives. Sally told him she'd miss him, that he'd always been with her and that nothing would change. She explained that she was going to Phuket to pay honour to his dead wife and child and they exchanged a tearful hug before being interrupted by Pippa who insisted on a photo of them. After saying a poignant goodbye to The Summer Bay House on her own she was joined on the beach by Alf and they said a tearful goodbye. He told her that wherever she was in the world she'd see and hear the beach and they both reflected that they'd been avoiding seeing each other. She confided that everything good in her life had happened here, meeting the love of her life, making her home with Flynn and Alf replied that Flynn would always be with her cheering her on. Alf recollected first meeting her and then watching her grow taller and wiser and announced he couldn't be more proud of her if she was his own. They exchanged a hug and Sally told him she's miss him the most. Alf asked if just this once she'd call him Alf and Sally replied with words that will no doubt go down in Summer Bay history: "You'll always be Mr Stewart to me, Alf." She then walked away to meet Pippa at the car, leaving Alf looking out to sea and in the Caravan Park we saw Miles mark the beginning of a new era by putting up new photos, including one of all Sally's friends around saying farewell to her, on the mantlepiece. The camera stopped on the final photo, one of Sally herself and viewers were left in no doubt that her spirit would continue in Summer Bay through the house and Miles.

What our forum members thought

On bringing the old characters back:

How good was it to see Pippa, Stevo, Carly and Sally all next to each other! (Alexx)

Steven and Carly! Yay! I love it when they come back, and how Carly kept making playful references about Miles as Milco. (Drew)

Steven & Carly! I couldn't believe it when they showed up, they added the much needed comic relief to such a sad episode. (Luc)

Totally didn't see the ending coming! I had a feeling Pippa Senior would return but not Carly and Steven! That was a nice surprise. (Natasha)

Carly was a good surprise, haven't seen her in ages and to have Sally's "family" there was a really nice touch. (Dnp52td)

Great as it was to see Carly, Pippa and Steven back, it would have been fantastic to see someone right back from the past again - a proper surprise with the three of them. (JackWilkins)

Enjoyed seeing Pippa, Steven and Carly join Floss in saying goodbye to Sally. (Foxy)

Bringing Carly and Steven back was lovely for Sally's farewell. (Ross)

It was a nice touch bringing back Pippa, Carly and Steven, Carly is as mischievous as ever. (Eduardo Bearo)

Great seeing Carly and Steven again, and as always great to see Pippa. (Vibsen)

How wonderful it was for me to see Carly and Steven back. (Mistified)

I am glad they brought back some of the original cast members for it. Sharyn Hodgson looks fabulous. (Ter 06)

sal_family.jpg
On Sally's speech:

Damn Kate almost made me cry. And I do mean Kate, not Sally. I got the feeling that a lot of that speech was directed at the actors in that audience, not just the characters. So sad for her to be leaving them all behind. (Emmasi)

Sally's speech was quite sad and I did feel like that the writers broke down the fourth wall by having Kate say this to not only the people in the room, but to the viewers also. Alf crying at not only Sally's farewell but when Cassie left was nice and sad... Poor man. (Drew)

I think I got a bit teary with the Sally scenes, and those tears off Kate were real I say, it was more Kate then Sally which made it even more sad. (WillowsTara)

I was almost in tears at tonight's farewell concert with Sally/Kate's farewell speech, but I promised I wouldn't cry until she left. (Luc)

I too felt that Sally's speech had a lot of 'Kate' it in, but this was by no means a bad thing - I suppose Kate and Sally are in very similar situations regarding where they are heading so its only natural that a speech like that would have connotations with Kate. (Foxy)

Sally's speech was so touching as well (Ross)

Loved Sally's speech and the reactions of the others to it. I liked that her speech was for Sally but could have the same meaning for Kate. I really felt like she was talking to her acting friends and not to the characters. And the others reacted to Kate and not to Sally. (Lino)

The speech was nicely timed, and thank god there were no montages, they have been done to death. (Eduardo Bearo)

I really lost it when Sally got up on stage and had to pause for a few minutes before I carried on. I am dreading tomorrow. (Ter06)

It was lovely hearing Kate speak - as most of that could easily reflect her as Sally & Kate, as a lot of you have said. (Crystal Zoub)

I couldn't help but think that was Kate Ritchie crying and not just 'Sally' but who can tell, she does it so well. (Jamey-Maria)

Sally speech was moving and I agree with peoples comments about it being Kate's as well. (homeandawayforever)

Sally's speech really got me going - I wasn't expecting it to either. (Ezaz8)

I was fine watching Sally's speech until I saw Alf crying. It was so obvious that there was just as much Kate speaking in that speech as there was Sally. (Carmelle)

I loved Sally's speech - she made me cry. (*Zetti*)

sal_speech.jpg
On the scenes with her family:

I think one thing nobody's really covered is her chat with Pippa after announcing she was going to stay an extra few days....once again, the producers have almost broken the 4th wall, and their conversation could refer as much to Kate & H&A as is did to Sally and the bay...it's another sneaky and clever move by the producers, convincing us (or the less diehard fans perhaps) that the show will be going on, stronger than ever....the conversation could also be seen as a Kate/Debra chat as much as a Sally/Pippa talk. (Rustysurfer)

The scenes with her family were really nice. (emmasi)

The reactions of the characters, and indeed of her fellow cast mates, must have been intermingled. Miles sitting apart before being brought into the family hug in the Pier Diner was quite touching, I felt for him. Miles was tremendous throughout, his character has put his stamp on the show in such a short time, and this is not always easy to do. (Eduardo Bearo)

All of them sitting on the floor at the start of the episode reminded me of the early years. (Anastasia)
The scenes with her family were wonderful, and me not having seen any of them in their original years, it was clear to me of their relationships with each other, especially Sally and Carly. I loved the fact that even though they've just had their stuff stolen, they had each other, they had wine and chocolate, and they had a good time sitting on the floor. (bobliveson)

sal_pip_house.jpg
The Concert:

REALLY liked the poignancy of Alf sitting at the back of the hall in tears. Also great to see Miles apart of the family again! (Alexx)

Speaking of Miles; I just love him more and more. From him being smart to that student telling her to find a seat to when he danced off the stage when the band begun. He's a great character and I'm SO glad he's not leaving with Sally. (Drew)

Alf sitting in the back crying, when he started I did too. That's what I will miss the most, his relationship with Sally. Miles was awesome-loved his little jig thing he did when the band started to play. (Natasha)

I was going perfectly fine until Annie started singing. Then everyone else started tearing up and I was gone. I think tomorrow I'm going to be worse somehow... I thought the concert was really sweet. (Jen)

I thought the song was cringe worthy, I can see Charlotte becoming the next Delta, she even looks like a younger version. (Dnp52td)

Thought the song was really fitting, and very Home and Away. I liked how after it the underscore came in as every cheered and Sally and Annie glanced at each other, that was a nice touch! (Alexx)

I thought Miles was hilarious as an MC, he is such a great and original character. (Ezaz8)

Sally's farewell at the school hall was beautifully scripted, filmed and acted, and such a fitting tribute to Sally Fletcher., and Alf's presence at the back of the hall was extremely emotional - his 'distance' over the past couple of episodes will only serve to his final scene with Kate all the more poignant. I too expected a montage as soon as the song started but I'm actually so glad we didn't have one....watching Sally's reaction was far more emotional for me than revisiting clips I've seen a hundred times in the promo's the past three weeks. (Foxy)

Thought this episode was absolutely brilliant. The song Annie sung was beautiful, and, and seeing Alf sitting at the back crying was so sad. (Ross)

The absolutely best thing about the concert was Alf's position, in my opinion. I loved that he was sitting in the back and looked so sad - it was really good acting. Even more impressing considering he actually was not at the concert when they filmed it. Miles is always nice to watch, and I loved his little dance. (Vibsen)

It was so hard to watch Alf just sitting there crying. Whenever I think of that it sets me off.
But the whole Alf thing - my god ! I don't know if I'll cope watching it tonight. Whenever I see that picture of Alf sitting at the back with the tear down his face - that is the end of me! (Christal_Zoub)

I liked song actually. If you had listened to words, " .down to the ocean..." Would loved to see or hear a proper version put to music....I think that Annie was dressed differently because of the connection Sally and Annie have with the Tom visit. (DebinWA)

I also loved the use of ultra close ups both during the concert and Sally's speech It was a beautiful episode. Great writing and great acting by all. (john003au)

sal_banner.jpg
The clearing out of the house:

For me the cliffhanger was a good strong cliffhanger - a real shock that will no doubt add interesting, unexpected dimensions to tomorrow's episode. (Jamiehugh)

I can totally understand about the house being ransacked! I think Sally was leaving and taking what she needed for her new life and leaving the rest for Miles etc.. So to rip the whole guts out of the place and start new was a brilliant idea! (Dnp52td)

The ending was brutal, quite a shock from the emotion that had preceeded, but, it's time to move the set on. (Foxy)

The clean out of the house which signalled a new beginning when Miles put up the "first" photo. (john003au)

The end of the episode was a bit unexpected, but it's Home and Away and Sally couldn't leave without one last drama. (homeandawayforever)

sal_empty_house.jpg
Her final scene with Miles:

I think I liked her mentioning Miles' family as well. I don't know, part of me though it was a bit heavy, but when else were they going to get the chance to say it? Miles in general seemed a bit serious, but I guess in a way this must be like losing his family all over again. It's good he'll have Ric and Mattie to focus on. (Emmasi)

The scene with Miles was also well done, her present to him was, as stupid as it sounds, slightly reassuring/comforting. Sally's always going to be a part of the house, but Miles is a part of it now, and continuing the tradition and it was sort of emphasized in that as well as the photo at the end, I thought. (Frizbee)

Sally and Miles have been like twins since they met, its been uncanny, and their parting is all the more poignant given that they have only just been reunited. Miles putting up the photo and taking on the baton from Sally was symbolic I feel. I warm more and more to Miles with each passing week. (ChatterBox)

I liked how they got Miles putting up the new photo and ended with a picture of Sally. Sally telling him she would be going to Phuket and saying a prayer for his wife and child was lovely. So very Sally. (I love Sam)

Then Sally & Miles....they started off with such a regular conversation and it became so emotional so quickly...these two have become so close so quickly, and its sad to see them break apart so quickly...but it's great to see Miles taking over the house, and with all the furniture gone, he can kind of make his own mark the Bay's most important property...the addition of the photo was a nice addition good to hear that Miles is ready to accept "everything that comes with" the house. (Rusty Surfer)

Favourite part of episode was Sally/Miles scene...that was raw emotion from both of them. (DebinWA)

Sally saying goodbye to Miles & telling him she was going to pray for his wife & daughter was very heart-felt. (Anastasia)

I'm glad that Miles said that the whole world was waiting for her, it was so beautiful. (Jen)

Cried my eyes out, great scene. The first thing that made me cry was when Sally said to Miles that she'll pray for his wife and daughter, from then on I couldn't stop. (Tamminmad)

The scene with Miles was great, I am running out of adjectives to use about him. His reaction to Sally being sorry about not meeting his family was pure, raw pain. It was a farewell to be remembered. (Visben)

The moment that made me just go over and start crying was Sally / Miles. (Miss Tan Tan)
I loved the fact she told Miles she was going to Phuket to stand on the beach where his wife and daughter died to pay her respects to them. I think that says more about the decency of the woman who is Sally Fletcher than anything else. (Jamiehugh)

sal_miles.jpg
"You'll always be Mr Stewart to me, Alf"

I was crying when she was saying goodbye to Alf. That scene broke me. I had tears streaming down my face... I didn't think I'd cry so hard for Sally leaving, but I did! Such a perfect line too. I really felt like "Alf" telling "Sally" that he felt like she was one of his own... well, you know. (emmasi)

Loved Sally's final scene with Alf. It was perfect. My flatmate and I were sitting there blubbering and crying. (BayGirl)

I teared up when she told Alf that he would always be Mr Stewart to her .(Anastasia)

The final scene with Alf.. that was SO well done, in fact (and I surprised myself here) I didn't start crying until this scene. It was just really beautiful, appropriate and perfect. I really felt for both of them, particularly Alf, and that 'call me Alf' line. (Frizbee)

The scene with Sally and Alf was beautiful and the perfect ending for Sally. That episode was so sad. (Caitrules)

The scene with Alf was perfect acknowledging that the last two original characters are now only one. (John003au)

Sally and Alf, well what can I say. Its been said. It was beautifully played, and I am sure Kate and Ray felt every moment of it. So much of what we have seen has been wonderfully understated rather than OTT hyperbole, and I feel that made it all the more real and emotional.
"You'll always be Mr Stewart to me, Alf." That was so fitting, and so very Alf and Sally. (ChatterBox)

The Sally/Alf scenes were lovely - and that really was a fantastic line to end on! When Sally looked back and we saw the shot of Alf on his own - that really had so much more meaning - he's the only original left now! Pippa being the one to drive Sal out of Summer Bay....it just seemed so right. (Dan F)

I know its said so often lately, but the last six minutes - Sally leaving the house and saying goodbye to Alf - were the best scenes in years and years. Since 1997 I have not watched an episode that moved me like that, honestly. (Nate)

I kept myself together until Alf said that, but then the tears came, and they kept coming. (Yannick)

It was such a beautiful fitting ending- very touching and appropriate to the character of both. It was so weird though when I took a second while bawling my eyes out to realise that thousands of other people around were doing the same on their couch at the exact same moment (Jamey-Maria)

The Alf/Sally scene....not as raw but still poignant. Would have liked Annie's sung playing underneath when Sally was saying goodbye to the house. (DebinWA)

Alf and Sally was just beautiful. I cried like big time. It was so sad. And Alf left all by himself was so sad. It was perfect. It will be something we will always remember it was so emotional. (I love Sam)

And then the most important scene the show has ever had - the parting of ways for Sally & Alf. God it was sad but at the same time, it was truly amazing - this scene made my entire viewing year....they were just so carefree and honest - Sally didn't hold a thing against Alf for not being around and Alf reminisced about Sal's arrival - yeah, you could see it from a million miles back, but it doesn't mean it wasn't any less emotional. Then comes one of the best pieces of dialogue - they weren't the most ingenious lines ever, but they simply broke our hearts - had to hold it back with my brother in the room. (Rustysurfer)

And then there was the scene with Alf which was so poignant... I think it was good that they didn't completely focus the episode on Sally, it would have been too difficult to watch. Even for someone who never was a huge fan of the character. (Leagle eagle)

I also felt that a lot of what Sally said (especially to Alf) was a reflection of how Kate felt The Sally/Alf scene on the beach was poignant. The TV was slightly blurry through my tears but it was very touching. The final quote "You'll always be Mr Stewart to me, Alf". Perfect! There is no better way to end it. It gave a real sense that everything would be ok. (even though I was crying) (Jen)

It really did seem final as Sally/Kate looked back towards Alf/Ray, the last original character/cast member - Sally is gone! (DarkAngel)

I totally loved the last scene though when Alf told Sally to call him Alf, and she replies "You'll always be Mister Stewart to me; Alf." It made me laugh, and cry (Drew)

Sally and Alf moment made me cry - I admit it. (Supersimpsons)

It was so sad the ending with Sally calling him Alf. (Luc)

Sally and Alf scene was great. Loved Alf standing on the beach by himself, symbolising him being the last original cast member. Call me Alf - the best bit. (Tamminmad)

The Sally and Alf scene was the most heart wrenching. I wasn't expecting Alf to say call me Alf, it blew me away and I felt my heart break down to my stomach and settle in my stomach. Seriously, so sentimental and heart-rending. That bit, made me bend over and cry like mad. I also thought to myself how much Alf's tears at the concert were just Alf's, and not Ray's as well. I truly think that there was a lot of Ray in that scene, and not just 'Alf'. (Salem)

That was definitely the best ending. Having those be her last lines, and they were beautiful, the fact that she's always called him Mr Stewart was nice and calling him Alf was a lovely touch. Great send-off for a great character. (Rising Flame)

Not ashamed to say I bawled my eyes out throughout the entire scene, and as someone who generally has a heart of stone when it comes to watching TV shows/movies that's quite an achievement on Home and Away's part. A truly beautiful scene, and poignant too.....a special way to end such a special character. (Foxy)

Yup, that was a really great scene! I always found it odd that she never called him Alf, but I guess it was always for the deep respect she held for him. It was so touching. As has been said Sally looking at the solitary figure of Alf on the beach was a really great scene. (monkeyhound)

As for Alf, I agree with everyone else - it was a perfect closure for both of them.
In fact, I think it was good that she only said goodbye to the two of them in this episode, it made each scene so much more powerful. Had everyone stood there waving, it would have been less emotional. (Visben)

I think the scene on the beach was beautiful, and was probably the most emotional for me, and them. It was perfect. I thought all of the goodbyes were, any more of them would have been too much. That was a beautiful scene, and it's when the tissue box started to empty out quite quickly in our house. (Angie's wraith)

Sally's not my favourite character so for me to have tears in my eyes was quite an accomplishment. It's something viewers have been wondering about for a while to so it was nice to have it addressed. (~Lynd~)

I cannot think of a more perfect and respectful way (to her, Ray and the show) to farewell Kate and Sally. A very moving scene. (Jamiehugh)

I loved that scene! So beautiful! And yes, just like everyone else; I was also crying. I always thought they were like father and daughter, but Sally would always call Alf Mr. Stewart and yes, I also think that was because she respected him so hard. So that line will be history now I think, it will always in my mind. (Liska)

The scene with Sally saying goodbye to the house, Miles and Alf were the most powerful and I honestly don't think I'll ever forget them or the last scene where Sally looks back on the beach before leaving. LOVED this final scene; it was so beautiful, intimate and very true to both characters and the history they shared. (TickTock)

I must say that when Alf started saying "Just this once" I was praying that he would say Dad. Not sure but yeah. It was a gorgeous scene. (Miss Tan Tan)

That had to be one of the most poignant lines ever in the history of the show. I've watched nearly every episode since it began, and I don't think Sally has ever called Alf by his first name. A true mark of respect from such a sweet girl, and to finally hear Mike Perjanik's full original score accompanying after so many years just made my day. The scene of her looking back over shoulder to see the solitary figure of Alf on the beach was so touching. The last-surviving original cast member was left behind looking out to sea while Sal was off to explore what the world had to offer... A lovely way to farewell such a wonderful character. (Tom Fletcher)

I agree, and that whole last segment rates amongst the best in the shows history as far as I'm concerned! I think what I loved about it is just how Home and Away of yesteryear it was, it was just how I think Sally's departure should be. And I agree, using Bobby's theme, was perfect, although it was Bobby's back then, the use of it now as a general Home and Away theme is really great and works so well, its by far the most recognisable what with it being played near on at least 3 episodes per week for 7 years!!As soon as he told her he couldn't be more proud of her if she was his own and the sound of emotional Sal saying 'I'll miss you the most Mr Stewart' - its like coming full circle, was so poignant and emotional, and for Alf - he has a far, far better relationship with Sally then he ever had with his own daughters or son/s for that matter. (Alexx)

Her exit was beautifully done. I bawled my eyes out in her final few scenes, starting off when she walked through the empty house and then the scene with Alf. My favourite line was actually when she said "I'm going to miss you Mr. Stewart", it was such a tear jerker. Actually I'm almost in tears just thinking about the scene. (starrychris)

It was a fantastic moment and I been waiting to hear it for a long time.
I always wondered if she was going to start calling him "Uncle Alf" as they're practically family. Either way it was a truly beautiful moment. (omega_tango)

sal_alf_beach2.jpg
Miles put up new photos
:

The end shot was just perfect - Miles placing the new photo on the mantle piece, then ending with the shot of Sal. Basically an exact replica of the end shot of the Pilot Episode!! (Dan F)

Oh, and Miles putting up the photo was great. (Jen)

Last night's episode was great. It was very beautiful and sad. I really liked the ending, when Miles put the photo up that was really nice. (homeandawayforever)

And Miles continued the tradition with the photo's! Yay! By putting a whole photograph up of the whole cast I guess it's like a way of saying 'these are the people who will be here once the new era begins' (Drew)

I liked how Miles put up a photo, continuing the tradition, but the start of a new era. (Angie's wraith)

I did like the photo ending of Miles putting her photo there. That was sweet (Sacha)

For me Miles putting up the photos was the perfect ending because it symbolised the traditions continuing in the Summer Bay House and the spirit of Sally living on through Miles and the house. (Skykat)

sal_concert_group.jpg
Overall:

I was kind of bummed that Sally didn't get a goodbye scene with Ric. One with Colleen and Leah would have been nice too. Maybe even Martha. And where was little Pippa? I think maybe she should have been there. (BayGirl)

Overall, I feel the build up was worth it, particularly in that last scene with Sally and Alf. As much as I'm going to miss her, it surprisingly made me feel a bit better, and was a bit of closure, but not.. she has to come back to visit.. she can't not after all that. (Frizbee)

Tonight's episode was just beautiful. I admit that even my eyes started to water ever so slightly! No-one seems to have mentioned it - but it was just wonderful that they used one of the shows most poignant underscores - Bobby's Theme! Used in the Early Years and then resurrected for Episode 4000. Just the perfect piece of music to accompany such an iconic episode. The only thing missing was playing the original theme tune at the end But they have more than made up for it in recent weeks, introducing a variation of the theme tune as 'Sally's Theme' (Dan F)

It was old school Home and Away, and I was pleased about that. (I love Sam)

It's really hit me know - Sally has actually left the bay and isn't coming back anytime soon...indeed most likely never.Definitely lived up to my expectations additionally, the fact we didn't see Leah at all annoyed me - I would have thought that she'd come back to the house after the function, or at least say farewell during the morning...she IS Sal's best friend (Rustysurfer)

A great episode. Perfectly fitting. You were really taken on an emotional journey. (Alexx)

Sally is really getting her due, but we are getting so much more as well. Sure if they'd only touched on Sally and her farewell in the episode, but there was so much of it. (Jamiehugh)

Wednesday's episode was the beginning of the end, the episode where you bring out the tissue box, and keep it until Sally has gone. I am not attached to Sally in the way that many of you are here, but felt a strong empathy with those of you who are. (Eduardo Buero)

Oh my god, what an episode! Definitely one of the saddest in H&A history. (Ter06)

Was a little disappointed - even though I think the final scene with Alf was great. I agree with you who said she should have said goodbye to Leah at least.
It would have been nice to see her walk off with little Pippa. (Chrystal_zoub)

Well, I've just watched Thursday's episode and what an episode it was. It had such a beautiful quality about it and it felt so very special. From the emotionally charged Sally and Alf scenes, to Miles putting up the photos on the mantle piece, everything just felt completely right. I really don't know what else to say... (Bttb-rox!)

Lovely episode, I swore I wouldn't cry, then they used that beautiful old underscore music that was used so effectively in the old days and that, more than a montage, brought back memories. (Leagle eagle)

I expected & wanted to see Ric saying goodbye & thanking Sally for everything she's done for him, I wanted to see the likes of Colleen, Irene & especially Leah. I can't believe there was no goodbye scene between Sally & her best friend of nearly 10 years. After everything they have been through together, losing Flynn, losing Dan & Leah gave Sally Pippa! Very disappointing. Most of if not all of the ep should of been about Sally. There has been so much hype about this episode & Sally leaving, It feels like I haven't be able to open a magazine or newspaper in the last 6 months with out seeing Kate or reading another farewell article. I found last night (with no flashbacks!) a real let-down. (Anastasia)

It was a truly touching episode. There was so much simplicity to it, (Jen)

Alf's first 'will I, won't I' scene on the beach was really powerful. It's so interesting that the scenes that are most effective are those where no one says anything. The shot of Sally with the car in the background, looking at the beach was a beautiful one, and then the sadness got to me. Not tears, just real sadness. Sally is a big part of the show FOR ME, and it's going be different without her. (bobsliveson)

I think the writers had a most difficult challenge as to what to include. Kate has been Sally for 20 years and there have been so many moments. Trying to put everything in would have been like the mad golfer. "Digging divots everywhere and not a decent hole anywhere." The writers decided that less was more and went for a few significant and very emotionally powerful scenes. I think they got it just right!! Well done. (john003au)

I thought in the end the writers did a great job with the last few "Sally" scenes (with Miles, the SBH, and Alf), and I was crying by the end of the episode, proving just how emotional it was!! (DarkAngel)

The Miles/Sally and Alf/Sally scenes were touching though. I just wish there had been more. I was expecting something similar to the episode after Sally and Kieran's failed wedding when they moved out of Summer Bay House - flashbacks like that... That would've been nice. (Spinach)

Can't believe Sally's gone, it's just not possible! It was a very good ending though...although I thought the entire cast would wave goodbye to her...ah well. (monkeyhound)

It kind of made me sad realizing this would probably be the last time we'll see Carly, Stephen and Pippa... The only reasons they ever returned was because of Sally. (Drew)

It was a fantastic send-off for Sally. The only sad thing is that they didn't play the theme at all. I really wanted to have the opening credits play for Sally's last appearance. Sally got a very strong send-off, certainly a lot more so than some other characters who got very poor send-offs. (TickTock)
