What made you decide to make "Ten Degrees South" a Standalone show, instead of a Home and Away Spin-Off as originally planned? Was it simply because Channel 4 wanted to differentiate it from Home and Away on rival UK channel five, or was there another internal reason for the decision?
Asked by Chris JGreetings Chris J. The genesis of "Ten Degrees South" has been an interesting one. A synopsis of it goes something like this. Network Seven canvassed the thought of producing a new two x one hour a week drama. They asked me to think about concepts and I suggested the possibility of a H&A spin-off, which I felt the fans would enjoy. It's original title was "Away from Home" and it followed Noah out of the Bay in to a job as Student Counsellor at Yabbie Creek University. There he interacted with Will and Gypsy and Lily (Gypsy had come down to study, feeling the constraints of marrying too young and wanting to expand her mind. Will felt threatened by this new independence on her part) Josh West was in the area, developing blocks of student accommodation on behalf of his father's company. He was also dealing with the wayward behavior of his sister Sasha. He goes to Dani and asks her to move in with Sasha and try to form a girl to girl bond that may help control the teen's wild, man hungry ways. Dani does so, but realizes that Josh has a second agenda - to win his way back in to her heart. There were many other storylines connected with new characters that our familiar characters met and interacted with. (NOTE: This initial work was done about two years ago, so where the H&A characters were in their lives was very different to where they are now. The above story would not at all lock in to the landscape of the show as it is now.) But none of this was to be. When we could not do a deal with Channel 5, our UK partner on H&A, we obviously could not make this show a H&A spin-off. So we looked for a partner elsewhere and were delighted to find one in Channel 4. So it was then back to the drawing board, taking what I had done and transforming it in to a stand alone show. When you see the finished product you will see I have kept some elements of the above and abandoned others. I gave the show the working title "Campus", but always felt a better one would come in to my head. It finally did about two weeks ago - titles can sometimes be really hard to crack. When "Ten Degrees South" suddenly emerged from the dark, I went Eureka! It's about TEN students doing their DEGREES at the SOUTH Coast University (SCU). But it also has the sense of a geographical location - and geographical location titles always work well. And three word titles are good. Anyway, there's a glimpse of what the world has missed out on, but also a teasing hint of what it will get. Thanks for your question.
