Logie triumph for Home and Away

Home and Away triumphed at the star studded 50th annual TV Week Logies earlier this week, taking home no less than four awards.

Kate Ritchie took home her third consecutive 'Most Popular Actress' Logie and her second consecutive 'Gold Logie'. In her acceptance speech, she reflected on how important Sally Fletcher had been to her over the last 20 years but was quick to point out that her Summer Bay departure was the start of a new chapter and it certainly wasn't the last we'd seen of her. Viewers were also treated to a light hearted tribute to Sally Fletcher from the Umbilical Brothers.

The trophy for 'Most Popular Australian Drama Series' was presented to Home and Away for the third year running, with Lynne McGrainger accepting the award on behalf of the whole cast. Lincoln Lewis received the award for 'Most Popular New Male Talent' for his portrayal of teenager Geoff Campbell.

A prize was also presented to the episode of Australian Story, which covered the life of the late Home and Away actress and musician Belinda Emmett.

Unfortunatly the evening wasn't a clean sweep, with Charlotte Best losing out to Bindi Irwin for 'Most Popular New Female Talent' and both Paul O'Brien and Mark Furze being pipped at the post for the 'Most Popular Actor' award by Chris Lilley

Bevan's successor announced

Home and Away's current Script Producer Bevan Lee has exclusively revealed to BTTB who has taken over the role for the second half of 2008.

Bevan juggled his senior role as Seven Network's Script Executive, to take over the role of H&A Script Producer for the first half of the show's 20th year. Assisted by second in command Alan Hardy, they are currently wowing the Aussie audience by taking the show back to its roots, in episodes that will air until June 2008 - stories that they finished plotting last year.

Since then, Faith McKinnon and Phil Lloyd have jointly taken on the position, and have already plotted 2 months worth of storylines. Both writers acted as Associate Script Producers under Bevan, and Faith took a short role in the chair when Dan Bennett left Seven in 2006.

Bevan told BTTB that he is very happy with the decision and that Faith and Phil are doing extremely well. He also said that they are just about to start plotting the Olympic Cliffhanger.

Raunchy episodes breach broadcasting guidelines

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) found that the Seven Network breached broadcasting rules with three episodes of Home and Away earlier this year, finding the content - featuring pole-dancing and sex talk - was of a 'PG' nature rather then the 'G' classification under which it aired.

Episodes 4358, 4380 and 4381 were investigated after receiving complaints from Melbourne viewers.

Episode 4358 deals with Belle's (Jessica Tovey) hasty decision to sleep with Lucas (Rhys Wakefield) whilst she still has feelings for Drew (Bobby Morley). The episode includes a scene depicting the couple in bed after having had sex, discussing what has occurred. Belle is later shown to regret her decision.

The ACMA found that ten scenes, amounting to almost half the episode, are devoted to the storyline of the teenage couple's decision to have sex. Half of these involved a direct discussion, in which a female character regretted having sex. However, the ACMA found that the frequency and length of the scenes exceeded the requirement that material in G rated programs be very mild in impact.

The second complaint revolved around two episodes in March when Cam (Ashley Lyons) coerced Martha, played by Jodi Gordon, to take-up pole-dancing at his Rocket Club against her will. She is shown in a crop top and short skirt dancing and swinging around a pole at the front of the stage to an audience of enthusiastic males who whistle and cheer. In another scene she is shown swinging and dancing around the pole in a two piece leotard, but soon stops when she realises some of her friends are in the audience on Peter's (Nicholas Bishop) buck's night.

Seven defended the depiction arguing that the program was G-rated because it contained no nudity and that pole-pancing was no longer considered erotic but had become standard on dance floors and in ballroom competitions. Seven argued that the scenes were neccessary to depict Martha's anxiety and that the point of the story is about Martha being pressured and manipulated into dancing and the rift that her decision creates between herself and her family and friends. The storyline became a central part of the show until Cam was arrested and his club almost burnt down.

The ACMA disagreed and found the pole dancing depicted was sexual behaviour and the content excessive for a G classification, having more than a mild impact on children. It concluded that children watching unsupervised may be disturbed by the sexual exploitation of a woman by a man with whom she is romantically involved.

Seven will amend Home and Away to a default classification of PG as a result of the ACMA findings and has advised the ACMA that all episodes are now classified PG "to better accomodate the program's storylines and reflect the increasing age of the program's viewing audience"

Material classified PG may contain careful presentations of adult themes but must remain suitable for children to watch with supervision.

The full reports can be downloaded on the ACMA's website.

Virginia and Sidney are doing their level best to navigate a maze of hard-hitters, fast-talkers and pokerfaced deal makers, but when the guy from the commission starts poking around asking difficult questions, everyone realises that there's more at stake than just their jobs.

On the other side of the world, a security guard shoots a young man who works at a water plant owned by the company. An investigation is set up to find out who's responsible. Back in Australia, the employees plead ignorance but are they somehow responsible for the young man's death? The investigation is bound to sort the sheep from the goats.

Everyone has something to hide. And everyone is prepared to reveal that something for a price. It's all about exchange.

From the sharp-witted writer of The Duck Shooter comes a high-speed journey into the lives of ordinary and ruthless people making and breaking contracts with themselves and each other, set against a backdrop of brokered deals between the heads of a large company and the people of a small nation."

18:30 - Flynn's Funeral (2006)
Four days have passed since Flynn's death, Sally lost in her reverie as the others prepare themselves for the funeral. It's time for Summer Bay to say goodbye to a friend, in their own special way.

Away for Bank Holiday

Home and Away will not be shown on five in the UK on Monday 27th August due to the Bank Holiday, a move which will now see the UK offset from the Australian week structure by an addition of 3 weekdays.

This means that after the Bank Holiday, any episode shown in Australia on a Friday, will now air in the UK on a Wednesday.

Whilst this does not dramatically affect viewing of the show, some viewers may note that dramatic episodes, that usually led to a weekend cliffhanger, now air on a Wednesday.

Cathy in Cancer Battle

Cathy Godbold, who's portrayal as Leukaemia sufferer Meg Bowman became one of H&A's most memorable storylines, has been battling her own battle with a brain tumour.

Cathy, who was diagnosed with the tumour back in May, had the tumour removed immediately in a Melbourne hospital before starting a course of radiotherapy, which she completed on Friday.

In an interview with the Sunday Herald Sun, Cathy said that she was determined to get back to good health. "It was a terrible shock to find out I was ill. Because I am young and healthy I have a much better chance of beating it. I want to get healthy and get back to work as soon as possible. I feel tired as the treatment does knock you for six."

BTTB EXCLUSIVE: 20th Year News

BTTB has received exclusive news regarding the 20th Anniversary of Home and Away, starting in January 2008.

Current Script Producer Sarah Walker has this week finished her period in the role, plotting the stories right up until the end of the year, and next week the new Script Producer takes over to start plotting for the 20th year of the show.

With it being such an important landmark for the show, it was decided that the show should receive the best work possible, from someone who is passionate about the show and knows a lot about its history.

Therefore we are thrilled to announce that Seven Network Script Executive, Bevan Lee, will be returning to the role of Script Producer for the first 6 months of 2008.

Bevan was brought in way back in 1987 to completely rewrite the disasterous pilot episode of the show. He did so in only 3 weeks and the pilot aired in Sunday 17th January 1988. Bevan then stayed on as Script Producer for the first year and a half of the show. After an eight year gap he returned to the Seven Network in November 1996 as Network Script Executive, a role he has fulfilled the the last 10 years. As well as overseeing the scripts of Home and Away for all this time, he has also created such shows as Always Greener and All Saints.

Bevan's last stint as Script Producer of the show came in 2004, when he filled the role in order to take the show through a difficult period in between the stints of Coral Drouyn and Daniel Bennett, and during this time he was responsible for such stories as the Sarah Lewis saga and Kane's cancer battle.

Speaking of his upcoming stint back in the chair, it is clear that Bevan wishes to create a memorable year for all fans of the show:

I wanted to come back to pay honor to the show I love so much and plot material that will pay strong tribute to the first twenty years. I don't want to honor the 20th year in just one big event, I want to pay tribute throughout the entire year by referencing the show's history in as many ways as I can.

Bevan has promised to fans of the show that the 2007 Season Cliffhanger, will NOT involve anyone leaving, dying or being injured and that there is no physical jeopardy involved whatsoever. However this does not mean that we won't be in for a huge shock...

My material will start with a very startling cliffhanger at the end of this year that will make regular viewers re-evaluate something that they have always taken for granted about one of the characters in the show. This cliffhanger will turn the life of that character on its head and will lead to one of the major stories of 2008.

Unless I'm mistaken, this cliffhanger will makes the jaws of those who have watched the show from the beginning well and truly drop. And the story will lead to the return of many old faces to the show at various stages through 2008.

So will it turn out that Sally's real parents are still alive? Maybe Alf was adopted and isn't a true Stewart? Stay tuned to BTTB to be one of the first to find out!

H&A gets new Neighbours on five

Home and Away's main rival, Neighbours, is to move to Five from 2008. The show has aired on the BBC since 1986, but when the rights to air the show went up for negotiation recently, a bidding war broke out between the BBC, ITV and Five. The BBC pulled out after refusing to pay extortionate prices for the show, accusing Neighbours' production company Fremantlemedia of making an "unrealistic price demand".

Five have been looking to acquire Neighbours for many years, and it's widely expected that they'll create an "Aussie Hour", airing Neighbours and Home and Away back to back, presumably from 5:30 until 6:30pm. This could have a positive effect on Home and Away's ratings, which are consistently lower than Neighbours' in the UK.

Ray on stage in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

It has been announced that Home and Away actor Ray Meagher (Alf Stewart) is to have a 2 week stint appearing on stage in 'Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.'

The play, centering around two drag queens and a transexual crossing the Australian outback in a large bus, has been playing at Sydney's Star City Lyric Theatre since the beginning of October.

Ray will be playing the part of Bob the Mechanic, whose role includes singing solo and having a boogie in a Kangaroo costume, something that Ray has said he is looking forward to.

Ray debuts on the 19th June with his last performance being on the 1st July.

Ada's Birthday Party

Ada Nicodemou (Leah) celebrated her 30th birthday in style on Sunday, at a star-studded event at Kings Cross nightclub's Sapphire Suite. The event was attended by many of Ada's Home and Away co-stars, as well as her new husband Chrys Xipolitas. However, as the Daily Telegraph reports, it seems that Ada may be showing signs of maturity, opting "not to have her cake and eat it too".

UK fans have sadly missed their chance, but Australian fans should watch out for Rhett Giles (Paris) in an upcoming episode of 'Lost'. Giles features in an episode airing on Thursday May 17th, playing a policeman in a flashback set in Sydney.

Giles had lived in Los Angeles since 2004, and has starred in episodes of Alias and Nip/Tuck.

Another break from the bay

After airing episodes every weekday without fail since 2001, Five didn't air an episode of Home and Away on last week's Bank Holiday Monday. Fans speculated whether it was a one-off move to bring the Five Life episodes in line with the Australian episodes, or whether it would become a regular occurence to prevent us from catching up with the Australian episodes.

Well, it seems we have our explanation. There is no episode of Home and Away on Five (so presumably no episode on Five Life either) on Monday 28th May.

It certainly seems like fans will have to get used to these short breaks from their favourite soap, as Five ensure they don't get too close to the Australian broadcasts. When Home and Away aired on ITV, the channel once stopped airing the show on Fridays to prevent themselves from catching up with Australia.

It Takes Two - Week 1

As you may know, Bobby Morley is taking part in this year's It Takes Two, the Australian talent show in which celebrities are paired up with professional singers in an attempt to impress a panel of judges and the voting public.

This week, he and partner Jade Macrae sang the ARIA winning hit, Wish You Well. His performance was described as '"deep and unique" by hna_fanatic from our Forum, and the judges were fans too, commenting on the couple's quirky direction and engaging performance. However, the pair were told to work on their technique.

They took home 26 points in total, with a score of 7 from judge Marina, 6 from James, 7 from Amanda and 6 from Ross. This puts them joint in fifth place, out of a total of 10 contestants.

How will Bobby perform next week? Don't miss it, Tuesday nights at 7:30pm on Seven.

Where are the sexiest women in the world? On Home and Away

The results of FHM Australia's Sexiest Women in the World 2007 are in, and Home and Away's hottest stars have faired well, making up 6 of the 100 women featured.

No 44. Holly Brisley
No 42. Melissa George
No 30. Tammin Sursok
No 28. Sharni Vinson
No 27. Jodi Gordon
No 4. Isabel Lucas

The magazine, on sale now, features a brief interview with Isabel Lucas (Tasha), who made #4 on the list:

So Isabel, how does it feel to be the fourth sexiest woman on the planet? To be quiet serious, I don't take the polls too seriously. I guess it's flattering but it's bizarre. To be judged in a poll of who is the most beautiful, I think that whole concept is bizarre. How do you know, you haven't met anyone?

A, good point. Do you see yourself as a sex symbol?
I don't think about that too much. I like to think of myself as an actor.

You are! So what do you think maked a woman sexy?
i think it's each to their own, because everybody has their own reason why they find someone beautiful.

Who would get your vote as the sexiest woman in the world?
Lauren Hill, she has stunning eyes. And I like her music. She's an artist.

Thanks to perryadams from our forum, where discussion of the results is taking place.

The early years back in the UK

It appears that Five Life are to begin airing old episodes of Home and Away from the middle of the 2000 season, the point where five took over from ITV.

When five life first launched, it was announced that early episodes of Home and Away would air on the channel. However, the announcement was quickly withdrawn and claimed to be a misprint. Now, it appears that the early episodes are set to actually appear. Five Life's schedule reports that the channel will air two episodes a day, from 10am til 11am, as of Monday 21st May.

Our forum members are discussing the announcement here.

Schedule Change

There is no episode of Home and Away on either five or five Life tomorrow, Monday 7th May 2007. It returns in its usual slots on Tuesday evening.

It's the first time since 2001 that Home and Away will not be airing on a weekday on five, and the decision has confused and annoyed many fans. Up until now, Home and Away on five has been in line with the Australian episodes, so an episode that airs on a Friday in Australia will also air on a Friday in the UK on five. However, the decision to drop tomorrow's episode means that the UK episodes will be a day behind - an episode that would normally air on a Friday will now air on the following Monday.

The reasoning behind the decision is currently unknown. Some fans think it is to line the five Life episodes up with the Australian showings. five Life show episodes of Home and Away a day ahead of five, so up until now have been out of synch with the Australian episodes. However, as many fans don't have access to five Life, this decision disadvantages them.

Another possible reason is that the UK is slowly beginning to catch up with the Australian episodes. As Home and Away doesn't air during the summer in Australia, the UK would eventually catch the Australian episodes and be left with no episodes to show. The BBC have the same problem with Neighbours, and deal with it by dropping episodes on Bank Holidays and certain other holidays, such as over Christmas. It's possible that five are beginning to do the same thing, and that dropping tomorrow's episode is a sign of things to come.

KATE WINS GOLD! LOGIE UPDATE.

Kate Ritchie has achieved a fantastic double by not only winning a Silver Logie for Most Popular Actress but she has also taken out Australian television's highest accolade - the Gold Logie - in this years TV Week Logie Awards.

Upon hearing the announcement, a shocked Kate put her hands over her eyes before recieving a friendly kiss on the cheek from an ecstatic Ray Meagher (Alf) who could be seen punching the air with excitement. Kate was then given a well deserved standing ovation by the industry gathered for the Logie presentations, and she spoke eloquently about growing up on our TV screens, and learning to live her own life off screen. In her earlier Silver Logie win, Kate thanked "Home and Away - the show" for being her constant during challenging times, saying she will be forever in its' debt.

Home and Away was also voted the Most Popular Austrailan Drama Series for the second year in a row, and for the 14th time in its 20 year history. Ray Meagher accepted the award on behalf of the cast, who stood behind him on the stage. Ray commended the work of the cast and crew, and "all the people who are connected with Home and Away who can't be here tonight" for making the show the "most financially sucessful product the Seven Network has ever had".

Earlier in the night, Amy Mathews, who plays Rachel Armstrong, was voted Most Popular New Talent, beating fellow co-star Jessica Tovey (Belle) who was also nominated in the same category.

Congratulations to all of the winners, especially the Home And Away winners, and most of all to Kate. It is great to know that the public recognizes class when they see it.

Kate to co-host It Takes Two

Home and Away's Kate Ritchie (Sally) will replace Tereasa Livingstone as a host in the upcoming second series of Seven's karaoke competition, It Takes Two, in her first major TV role away from the Summer Bay set. Grant Denyer will return as Kate's co-host.

Kate's first television presenting role comes just months after she began a radio hosting role with Nova FM, co-hosting their drive time show in Sydney and Melbourne - The Akmal Show with Kate Ritchie.

Being based in Sydney, the co-host gig will mean Kate will have to fly to Melbourne each week where the series of filmed, a chore she is quite used to after appearing on the show as a contestant in the previous series.

It's been a big year for Kate who is again nominated for the Gold Logie, the winner to be announced next Sunday, May 6th. Betting agency CentreBet currently place her as the second favourite to win the Gold, behind Rove McManus.

It Takes Two premieres Tuesday, May 8th, replacing Dancing with the Stars.

Bobby Morley (Drew) is to appear on the second series of Australia's "It Takes Two" programme. The show pairs up celebrities with professional singers/singing coaches and gets them to perform weekly in order to impress a panel of judges and the general public and avoid elimination.

The first series saw Home and Away stars Mark Furze (Ric), Kate Ritchie (Sally) and Judy Nunn (Ailsa) take part, though the series was eventually won by model Erika Heynatz.

Bobby will be singing with Jade MacRae. MacRae and her partner Michael Bevan were the fourth couple to be eliminated when the first season aired last year.

The show is currently in pre-production, and will begin on May 8th 2007.

New Theme Tune hits screens

The start of the 2007 season brought with it a brand new version of Home and Away's famous theme tune, sung by Israel Cannan. However, it was badly received by many of the show's fans, who disliked the theme's new vocal arrangement.

Thus, after just three months on the air, the theme tune was re-recorded, with new vocals by 20-year-old actor and musician Luke Dolahenty.

The new arrangement hit Australian screens today, and is reminiscent of the original version of the show's theme tune, with many of our forum members noting the similarity between the voices of Mark Williams (singer of the 89-95 theme) and Luke Dolahenty.

So far, the theme has had a lukewarm reception by members of our forum, but the majority seem to agree that it's an improvement over the version it proceeds.

Grantley to go Galactic

Home and Away star Gyton Grantley (aka James Dalton) aims to take a seat on Virgin Galactic when it launches in 2008. The project, headed by Richard Branson, transports travellers 100km above the earth and allows them to experience weightlessness.

However, that's not all. In a bizarre plan of action, he wants you to pay for his flight! He's set up a website, Send Gy To Space, with which he aims to raise the money to pay for the $200,000 ticket.

Not all the money goes directly to him though. The website claims that 10% of the ticket cost, and any excess money donated, will be given to the Starlight Foundation, which helps to bring joy to sick children.

"I belong there, in the stratosphere. Circling the earth in zero gravity and being at one with the cosmos" says Grantley, who claims to have dreamed of being an astronaut since he was a little boy.

Theme song revamped, again

Following negative viewer feedback, the vocals to the Home and Away theme song have been revamped for the second time this year.

The current version of the theme song, performed by Israel Cannan, lasted less then three months after receiving a largely negative response from fans, with the majority of members on our forums disliking the new vocal arrangement.

Following a review by the production team and Seven management, the theme song has been re-recorded with new vocals. However, producers have decided to stick with the same style of a solo young male singer.

The new version is sung by 20-year-old actor and musician, Luke Dolahenty and will be heard on air for the first time from next Monday in Australia.

Would you believe it?

Since what feels like the beginning of time, members of our forum have urged five to give Home and Away the promotion it deserves. With the Season Finale just around the corner, it seems they're finally doing just that.

We recently reported that a number of trailers for the show have started appearing on digital channel five life, and now five's flagship channel has joined the fun.

As of last week, five has been airing a trailer promoting this Friday's Season Finale. Set to 'Ain't No Sunshine', the trailer features clips from this Friday's episode, with a voiceover stating "Dark days are coming to Home and Away, all this week on five".

You can download the trailer here.

With five usually making no attempt to promote the show, forum members are wondering if this is a sign of things to come. .

New Trailers on five

Home and Away is finally getting some much deserved promotion on five.

Five Life is running a number of trailers promoting the show, featuring interviews with Lynne McGranger, Ray Meagher and Mark Furze. It appears there are at least two variations of the trailer, one featuring just Lynne, and one featuring all three cast members. It's likely there are other versions airing, so keep an eye out for them over the coming weeks.

The interviews were shot when Lynne, Ray and Mark were in the UK. Lynne was in the country for a couple of months from November, while Ray was over in December/January, starring in the Dick Whittington Pantomime in Blackpool. Mark, of course, was here from January, starring in Soapstar Superstar, ITV's singing competition which saw him come third.
