  1. This seems like a chicken or the egg question. Are there no teenage characters because teenagers don't watch, or are teenagers not watching because there are no teenage characters.
  2. And guilty of about a million other crimes he never got in trouble for, so I wouldn't feel to sorry for him. I actually think getting Kirsty away from her worthless, irredeemable loser of a husband was a godsend and should have happened about 6 years before it did (she never should have got back with him after he left her the first time. Their storyline was over then and reviving it just made no sense and ruined both their characters). Kirsty and Miles weren't the greatest couple ever (I'd have rather seen her with Roman), and they weren't nearly as good as original KK (which only lasted about 2 months), but they were good enough and about a million times better than 2003 - 08 KK who were one of the 5 worst couples in the history of the show. Ever since he came back for in 2003, Kane was just awful for her in every possible way and getting away from him was the only way to save Kirsty's character.
  3. Some people have been making comments about Leah being "mini Colleen" for about 7-8 years now. I think the process of turning her into Colleen is now officially complete. Ada deserves much better than this.
  4. Man, I'd totally forgotten that Xavier was introduced to the show as a drug dealer. I agree with you. He used to be an awful character, but he's one of the best for a while and, for whatever reason, other characters just seem to be more likeable when they're with him. Good luck to Dave in the future.
  5. I think the problem Home and Away runs into with stories like this is that they continually try and have it both ways. It seems like they want to write Brax as a jerk because having a guy in the main cast who acts like a jerk to other characters creates drama, but at the same time they want us to like him enough so that we'll ship his relationship with Charlie and cheer on as her character is completely assassinated into becoming nothing more than his doormat. All they end up doing is perpetuating the myth (sorry girls, it is a myth) of the utter jerk boyfriend who treats his girl like a queen. Of course all that winds up happening is her jerk boyfriend ends up making her permanently miserable because he inevitably treats her as badly as he does everyone else (see also: Aden and Belle, Kane and Kirsty). They really need to pick one direction and stick with it. Either introduce a character as a bad guy and redeem him so that I cheer when he gets the girl or has something else good happen to him, or keep him a jerk and actually show the consequences of his actions. As RR points out, this could have been the latter and there is a really good story buried in this mess somewhere. Brax falls in love with Charlie, corrupts her and she pays the ultimate price for it. But the emphasis on the consequences is all wrong. Instead of feeling sad that Charlie has thrown her life away by getting involved with Brax, I get the feeling that Brax is the one I'm supposed to be feeling sorry for despite the fact that he's arguably the least sympathetic character in the show's history. And anyone who points out that Charlie would have been far better off without him is immediately forced to apologise to poor, poor Brax. Right now, my favourite TV show is Breaking Bad, which features a character called Walter White not totally dissimilar to Brax. A genius but underachieving high school chemistry teacher dying of cancer, who upon receiving his diagnosis, uses his chemistry skills to cook potent crystal meth with one of his former students so he can pay for his medical bills and provide for his family when he dies. In some ways he's completely different to Brax, but in terms of "guy breaks the law for a good reason" he's pretty similar. So why do I love this show and hate Chax, Adelle and KK? Because Breaking Bad is crystal clear in it's vision that Walter White is the bad guy. He started out about as well intentioned and "good" as a meth creator can be but the deeper he got in the more he enjoyed it. He's given chance after chance to get out and stop cooking, but he refuses out of stubbornness, ego and pride. He continues to delude himself that he's doing it "for his family" when it's actually causing massive problems to his family and he's obviously really doing it because it lets him feel powerful and smarter than everyone else. His actions result in his cop brother in law being shot, broke up his family, and causes numerous physical and emotional problems for his surrogate son / partner in crime. But the show never tells us that we should feel sorry for Walter. It is obvious that he has brought all this on himself by selling his soul and yet it never really feels like a morality play either. Even though the show is about a guy who is now pretty much an irredeemable bastard, it remains interesting because it's interesting to watch a guy who basically started out "good" make a conscious decision to be bad and to see how far he'll go and to see what horrible fate awaits him in the end. I feel like Home and Away are trying to create a Walter White / Tony Soprano character with Brax, but instead of being the bad guy people are instead supposed to feel sorry for him and ignore all his crimes because, um well, he's kind of hot. As b2sb09 points out, there is no point in having a character repeatedly break the law when you know the cops are just going to turn a blind eye for no other reason than that he's part of the main cast. They did this with Kane and Aden and they're doing it with Brax. I know the writers think this creates "drama" but it does just the opposite.
  6. I think Palmer and Alf could co exist with each other, even though they tend to duplicate each other a bit right now. With a bit of minor tweaking, they could easily turn into H&A's version of Harold Bishop and Lou Carpenter. I certainly wouldn't be asking Palmer for parenting advice, but I find it stupid how some people in these forums are so hard on him when they've been so eager to forgive guys like Aden and Kane , who were far less remorseful about being far bigger jerks for far longer periods of time. Maybe John should tell people he was abused as a child.
  7. I agree with you. I've said before that Palmer reminds me of the old Alf (which I guess is the young Alf). I loved Alf when he used to act all high and mighty and seemed to think that running the only general store in town gave him the right to act as the King of his own tiny little empire and boss everyone around. Palmer reminds me of that guy. Even at his absolute worst, I never saw him as "OMG what a terrible guy" but more of a weasel who enjoyed throwing his weight around. Not to mention that Alf was a pretty terrible parent to Duncan in a very similar way to Palmer was with Trey and no one seems to hold that against him.
  8. I love the Wire and The Shield, but those were far more compelling and better done and as much as I liked the characters, I was always hoping that they'd be caught up with, and they usually were. And with everything they did, you were never really made to forget that these people were bad, but the problem with HAA, is they not only get away with it, it's usually forgotten about and they're suddenly Mr Nice People who have never done a thing wrong; Angelo's past misdeeds have only just been mentioned recently. I do agree that H&A has a tendency to just try and get people to "forget" that certain people (usually "hot" guys) are / were basically jerks when they want teenagers to swoon over them and that's the problem compared to shows like The Wire. I always thought Avon Barksdale, Proposition Joe, Stringer Bell and even Bodie were often more likeable than the cops chasing them or the politicians, but you always knew that even if they had reasons for their actions that they were usually in the wrong. About the only crim who I thought was overly sympathetic and a bit too nice was DeAngelo Barksdale. He was still a great character though. I don't know if they got "caught up with" though. Marlo pretty much got away with everything and the only one who got arrested was Avon (and lesser guys like Poot etc). The rest just got killed. By the way, you are very lucky you missed Aden's storyline. It was basically people saying "BUT HE'S HOT AND HE WAS ABUUUUUUSED AS A CHILD. Therefore it's ok for him to beat up whoever he wants and kill anyone who was even tangentially involved and he doesn't deserve to go to jail because it was stupid Rachel's fault for getting herself kidnapped". UGH.
  9. Exactly! I liked him at the start, I thought he was a good guy just involved with a bad crowd, but he is a criminal pure and simple! He doesn't have any regard for anyone (when it suits him) , he lies and lies and lies and LIES to Charlie and I just want to shout at the TV and tell her to get away from him because he has fooled her big time. Stupid Charlie always ends up trusting him in the end and the cycle just continues and continues! He sold out Brody and also Keith, just to dig himself out of trouble. I am even liking Heath more than Brax now because at least Heath isn't as calculating as Brax is. Heath may be a bad guy but lets face it he doesn't have the brains for anything whereas Brax can worm his way out of every situation and be very conniving. I too hope they don't go down the route of brushing all his actions under the carpet and forgetting about it and then gets together with Charlie and suddenly be an amazing person, and your right it would be a total cop out. I wish people would find out what he is really like, especially Charlie. I certainly hope he just doesn't get others to take the fall and he comes out looking all innocent, because he is the least innocent of the lot. He's the one calling the shots and it really is disgusting the way he has manipulated his way into Charlie's bed and has used her for his own advantage (when needed to) and does nothing but lie and lie to her. I liked him when he just seemed bad, but he's not a bad boy, he's a CRIMINAL, and a cold, manipulative, drug dealing one at that who has shown on more than one occassion his willingness to do whatever he can to protect himself - he really is a coward the way he uses and sets up others like that. I also don't like men who use and lie to women like the way he has used Charlie, will continue to use her (when necessary to cover up for himself) and is never honest with her - that's just low and all he is doing, is hurting her more and more with every lie. She's going to feel totally used and disgusted with herself when she finds out; at least I hope she finds out, but who knows with these writers, they may think that because they look so wonderful together to keep her in the dark about his true nature so that they can stay in this totally shallow relationship based on nothing but looks, lies, deception and sex. I always thought you needed honesty and trust to have a relationship, clearly not as long as the sex is good. He is commiting major crimes and I really hope that justice eventually catches up to him because he should not just be allowed to walk away without some sort of punishment and just become the next good guy in town, where everyone just forgets because he comes across as a nice guy. With what we've seen him do in the past few weeks, that would be an absolute lie and cop-out. For some reason, I find myself liking Heath so much more than Brax, because at least he doesn't hide behind a mask of respectibility like Brax - still hope both of them get what is coming to them, but unfortunatley, I doubt justice will ever catch up to these good-looking criminals. I certainly hope that Charlie wises up soon and does her job - she's totally compromised when she is with him. A cop with a criminal can never work, unless of course no one ever finds out his involvement and they sweep everything he has done under the carpet, which will be just so bad and irresponsible. Still, if they go down this route, at least I'll know what sort of person he is, but it will be a shame that I have to right Charlie off as a joke and an embarrassment to the uniform who has sold out everything she believed in to live a big fat lie. I imagine he will end up getting away with everything for the simple fact that he's part of the main cast and therefore incapable of being arrested. Aden can get away with kidnapping, aggravated assault and attempted patricide with a good behaviour bond (which he ignores every second week, but lets just ignore that), Charlie can get away with kidnapping and torture and I haven't even started on Jackass Holden yet. So I don't see why Brax should be punished. And yes, surely this will end up with everyone just wiping this under the carpet and with him being "redeemed by the love of a good woman (who's actually a totally shallow hypocrite and a complete moron. When Angelo Rosetta is pointing out what a terrible cop you are...). I agree with some of the other posts here about preferring Heath because he's just a guy who doesn't seem to know how to be anything else and doesn't pretend to be anything else. He's a jerk, but at least he's honest about it. And I don't think that being a criminal automatically means that I have to hate you. My favourite show is The Wire and the criminals on that show do things that even Brax would think is beyond the pale. And yet I actually find parts of them to like and in a way admire. But those characters are far more compelling and easy to relate to, even for a guy like me.
  10. I don't know when this thread became about Robbie, but I'll join in the bashing. I actually liked him for his first year or so...until the stepped on a needle storyline. Then he really did become a pathetic wimp who spent all his time shouting. Somewhere along the line he turned from Robbie Hunter, likeable nerd, into Jason Smith, jackass. Sort of like how Geoff basically became Lincoln Lewis during his last few months on the show. As for Dex, I don't know. There's a fine line between "endearingly pathetic" and "creepy and stalkerish". He was the former with Adrian and Graves and I liked him for it. He was the latter with Marilyn and it really didn't interest me. I wish they'd kept Adrian around. She was interesting and different without seeming contrived as such characters often are.
  11. One of the funniest / most ridiculous scenes in Home and Away last year was when Xavier walked into the beach house and made a big deal about "catching" Geoff with his shirt off around Ruby. I mean, did Geoff ever have a top on?
  12. I've said this in another thread, but I don't think it's the pacing of the storyline that's a problem but the acting and writing. They seem to be going for an Angie / Nick thing with Penn manipulating Nicole who is totally under his spell, but it's just not coming off. Angie was so well written and acted that it seemed completely believable she could manipulate a schoolboy, wrap him around her finger and mess with his mind. Penn just doesn't come across like that at all, and so the storyline seems really dull and Nicole seems like a superficial, gullible idiot and not the "manipulated abuse victim" that Nick did.
  13. To ask a possibly stupid question, where can I find the scene counts?
  14. I think Kane and Kirsty worked, not just because of the Mirgini / saving Shelley's life storyline but because of the person Kirsty was. Kirsty was the kind of person who was sweet, kind hearted, well meaning, understanding and sympathetic enough to those from bad backrounds to believably forgive Kane for what he did, especially after he saved her mum's life. She was also the kind of person who was selfish, rebellious, stubborn, naive, immature and ignorant enough of the consequences of her actions to actually take it further than just forgiving him and pursue an inappropriate relationship with him. The real problem with that relationship came when they brought Kane back in 2003 as a completely different person. I never liked Rattie. As I said, KK worked because of who Kirsty was, but Ric and Matilda had serious believability issues for me. Matilda at the time was a total snob and I always found it ridiculous she would show even the slightest bit of interest or do anything but look down on scruffy, poor, rough around the edges Ric. Especially given the way he treated her brother. I totally agree with you about Aden and Belle. It was just so contrived. The whole thing just smacked of some writer realising that Belle's "group" (Ric, Drew, Lucas, Cassie etc) had all left the show and they couldn't think of anything else for her to do without them, so they had her start making googly eyes at a guy she alternated between hating and not noticing. And they couldn't think of a way to do it believably, so they just ignored that and threw them together out of nowhere. As for the part I bolded, gee you mean someone like Nicole? They should have got together from the beginning.
