Story chosen: Wishing You Weren't So Good (by karter)
Reviewed by: Zetti

I chose this fan fiction to review because it is a deep and sensitive issue it touches. It isn't as simple as the majority of fics posted on this site and others. It explores the dynamic of Aden and Nicole's relationship which is something that wasn't explored on the show.

The fic comprises of a one-shot but it is a very good and detailed one-shot, the relationship and interaction between Aden and Nicole. They have the typical conversation about their own personal love life.

In the description, it describes the fic as being romance and comedy genres. I would agree with the choice of romance to an extent as not much romance is displayed in the fic. It is balanced with a great deal of comedy. It really does depict a lot of comedy and happiness.

The first few lines of the chapter were really descriptive and hold together the chapter although I think less dialogue and more descriptive analogue would have improved the chapter.

Story Chosen: Humans and Animals (by whispered_envy)

The oneshot we are reviewing this month is 'Humans and Animals' by whispered_envy. The story revolves around it's central idea, which is Roman deciding to buy Nicole and Aden a dog.

The story opens in an animal shelter where Nicole and Aden are disagreeing about what kind of dog to get. Nicole 'wants to get a fluff ball' and Aden 'wants to get some gross thing'. This Oneshot obviously has a lot of humor mixed with fluff and a sense family bonding, too. However, the story isn't all fun and cute fluff, while looking at the dogs and trying to choose one to take home, for Aden it brings up very painful memories about his suffering and abuse when he was a child. He compares it to the animals who had been hurt by their previous owners, thrown out on the street, and not wanted. He says that Humans and Animals aren't so different.

At the end of the story Aden and Nicole agree on 'a medium sized black-and-white dog', and Aden is instantly interested as the dog is called Miriam, which is revealed as being his mothers name. The two kids are very proud of their new pup as they drive home, and Aden gets a sense of finally having a family.

whispered_envy's writing doesn't cease to amaze me. In the short few paragraphs that contains this marvellous oneshot she has established a lot of good, solid themes and ideas, feelings and thoughts of the central character. The story is very well written, and so true to character that you can definitely imagine Aden, Nicole and Roman saying these things and you can picture the scene very well. I highly recommend this oneshot as it's a great read if you feel like a little pick me up, or if you just want to read something high quality, hilarious, witty and heart-warming all the same.
