Roman... Your Thoughts

Here are some comments from members about Roman Harris from his time in the Bay to his final episode:

I think he was a very good father to two very challenging teenagers. He didn't have to take Aden in when he did but he supported him through some pretty tough stuff. He was good for Nicole. He gave her what she needed in a caring, loving parent. I think he was a good character. It was good to see his transformation from someone nobody in the Bay was sure of to part of the community. Roman was written as an intriguing character from the start. However, that was never really fully developed on until his final couple of weeks so we never fully understood why he was the way he was. Because of the lack of explanation I found I just stopped caring after a while and found him quite dull and cold too. I think he had potential, and while the concept of the character was interesting, for me he never really fully worked. Shame really. Conrad it a lovely actor and H&A were lucky to have him. Mistified

I can't say I ever was a huge Roman fan. Not like I had anything against him, but he wasn't really a favourite of mine either. I think he was fine at first, when he was a little mysterious, and nobody really knew a lot about him. I think it was time to let him go. The character no longer added much to the show IMO, and I think after the first issues with Aden, and then Nicole were through, he wasn't that interesting anymore. At least that's what I thought. From my perspective, Roman was a great all rounded character whose parenting skills were better than Tony's. With Miles though, I feel they both have different strengths in parenting, and I don't like either one any better than the other. Both characters have completely different background and character arcs and stories, so it is only natural that they would have different strengths and downfalls as parents and in their behaviours as a whole. I was a fan of Roman up until the end of his blindness storyline/arrival of Gardy. Conrad is a great actor, and the role of Roman was great for him. My other moan about Roman, was the time between CaR breaking up, and Leah and Roman getting together. I didn't like it at all! suzannelgnz

I loved Roman. From the moment he helped out Miles - like a respectful friend, not like someone feeding the homeless because it was the right thing to do - I knew he was something special. I love that that friendship never went away, and that the writers have been smart enough to continue to acknowledge it throughout Roman's stay, and beyond. It's sad that Roman's been written out the way he has, going to jail for something that was essentially Gardy's fault, but Roman is so noble that he wouldn't accept that he wasn't fully responsible for his own actions, which I guess he is, so... I guess it's fitting, in the end. He's kind of going out on his own terms. I loved the focus on Miles' relationship with Roman. Every time I think I've dealt with Roman being gone, a new aspect presents itself and I'm devastated all over again It was good to hear straight-up that he'd been charged, rather than dragging it out and never resolving it (*coughBarry*). emmasi

I thought Roman played a great father figure; at the beginning of his role, I was against him because he seemed to be a new Sally/Miles; taking in all the waifs and strays of the bay BUT this really did change with his relationship with both Nic & Aden, and I grew to love Roman as a character. He arrived a man of some more than considerable mystery and actually though we did find out parts of it, he's retained it to the very end, with so much more it feels like to find about him, and yet I don't think we'll ever get the chance... He set up what was a somewhat unconventional family unit with Nicole, Aden and Morag, and he made it work. He made it work SO well. He brought excitement, action and drama, with emotion and feeling, and it just worked. SO well. Conrad made Roman, truly believable, it felt as if he'd always been there. His bonding scenes with Miles, his family life at home, and his somewhat mixed up love life, it would never have worked to see him with just one woman, but, I would've loved to have seen or heard about him dating more. I don't know why, just in the midst of him being him, some 'normality' would have been nice. JackWilkins

I have never been a big fan of Roman, well to be honest. I hated him!! I am a Jack & Martha supporter 2,000,000%, and I felt that Roman got in the way of their happily ever after! So, I have never really liked him. I think at first he did a bad job with Nic, letting her get away with everything!! But, once they got to know each other it was good. (I have always strongly disliked Nicole tooo) Then, he risked his own life to save Nicole. Which was brave and strong and loving! But in the last few weeks I have grown to really love Nicole & Roman, and their interactions. And now, its over I have always felt like he has gotten on with Aden a lot better, And, there has been a stronger relationship there then with Nic. But just recently that changed. He really picked up his game and came through for Nicole. Now, I am going to miss him. But, until a few weeks ago (When Gardy came to town) Roman was kinda like furniture, and didn't bring much at all to the show! And, I think Roman had brought all he could... its going to be sad for Nic. And there last scene together, I was in teaarssss!! the thing of how he regretted not getting to know her sooner, just made me want to cry more.. that was intense acting from both parts, and I felt like I was there in the room.. hunnibunni7000

OMG How emotionally charged was tonight's episode? I didn't think that I would cry with Roman leaving, but I did. When Aden and Roman started to cry and hugging, tears weld up in my eyes. Once Roman and Nicole started I could not stop. grumble bum

I just watch the episode, it was very good, but really sad as well, I cried at the part when Roman was saying goodbye to Nicole, the look on Charlie's face as well, it was a sad scene but really good acting from both Tessa and Conrad. I liked the Roman and Aden scene as well, good that the writers hadn't forgotten about those two, there hasn't been a scene between Aden and Roman scene Roman kicked him out, so it was good that they had a scene together, with Roman saying that he was proud of Aden after everything he'd been through, and that they'd been through a lot together. zoelouise

I'm not a Roman fan, but this exit storyline has made me LOVE Nicole so much. bobliveson

Roman's departure was handled very well all things considered. Gardy is and was a psychopath. He was very entertaining in the early episodes, but I was not wholly convinced by the turn of events and the manipulation of the Elliot/Mark and the "what happened in Afghanistan" story. However, Conrad played the whole thing with conviction, and that made his departure extremely poignant, particularly its effect upon his family and friends. Nicole and Romans good bye was very moving and it is sad to think that the father daughter relationship which was developing so well is now coming to a halt. It was great to see Aden and Roman make peace, and Todd always shows maturity in scenes such as these. Miles too is losing his best friend and I wonder who he is going to chill out with now that Roman is behind bars. Bareenfan

I really loved the episode. So very, very emotional. Plus all my favourite people in scenes together, shame it had to take Roman leaving to get them all there together. Such a lovely moment between Miles/Roman, Miles still wanting to fight, but Roman so clearly feeling defeated, and then Roman asking his best mate to look after his daughter. Then finally we get a Roman/Aden hug & tears too. And lastly that Nicole/Roman scene was so heartbreaking to watch. Charlie's reaction said it all. I cried. I cried too. Everyone's acting was top notch, but especially Conrad and Tessa. Going to miss you Roman. Anaya

Roman is gone OMG that was soooo sad. Where is the weeping smiley? It was an awesome exit episode for Roman. Nicole and Roman, Aden and Roman, Miles and Roman and even Charlie had a tear in her eye. I liked how the "good Roman" came through in the end, and good old Alf's intuition about there being more to it was sooo right. Gotta love that guy. It was all just brilliant. Corey

I'm glad Roman made his peace with Aden, and his words to Nicole were particularly heartbreaking. I just hope that without her father, Nicole can indeed be the strong young woman that he sees her to be, and not go off the rails as a way of dealing with her grief instead. I hope Roman's leaving is the making of Nicole, and not the breaking of her. It would have been nice to see Roman say goodbye to Leah, but I guess if we had that, then where would it end?? We couldn't exactly have him saying goodbye to everyone in town, I guess. I'm glad the ending was somewhat open-ended so that we can all hold out hope for a possible return from Roman somewhere down the track............fingers crossed. And I really hope they find Gardy and bring him to justice as well - it would be grossly unfair for Roman to carry the can for the whole thing when Gardy is just as guilty. tw1057

I agree with those that don't see the point in Roman leaving, he still had a lot of mileage in the show and it seems like the writers just got bored with him. alexx

It brought real depth, and I loved seeing the "whiter than white" Roman fall on the wrong side of the law. But unlike other soaps, we could see why Roman was being forced to change, and it was fascinating watching the crisis of faith he was going through. The scenes particularly with Aden were great, and very poignant. _chris70_
