Ollie and Kane

his is the story of Kane Phillips - father of Ollie, the sacrifices that were made, the outlining love for his son and the events which unfolded. A Father's love for one's child is the most important bond that a child remembers throughout his or her life. In this storyline, the most important male in Ollie's life will always be his Dad and from the moment we saw these two on-screen we knew the bond between them was so strong, natural and believable.

When it came to looking after his family, Kane made many sacrifices in order to keep them together, fed, sheltered and showed his love for them. It might not have been the conventional way to go about things but when you are on the run from the law - it's the only way.

When we first met Kane and Ollie, it was clear that Kane had thought long and hard about putting his son's health first and foremost. He knew in his heart that Ollie was sick and needed treatment that he couldn't provide because he was a fugitive himself and any contact with the medical professionals at the hospital would arouse suspicions and he didn't want to risk people recognising him. So with the help of Irene, Ollie managed to get the medical treatment for his bone infection that he deserved from Dr Armstrong and with Irene as his carer, he was well looked after until alternate arrangements could be made.

You could see from the moment that Kane appeared by Ollie's hospital bedside that the bond between them was an unbreakably strong one. Ollie was overjoyed to see his Dad, who had missed his son so much and with only a few precious moments to spare he made the most of enjoying his Dad's company. He was overwrought though when Kane told Ollie that he had to go - he didn't want his Dad to leave and tiny tears fell down his little cheeks as he began to sob. The way that Ollie begged for his Mum, in between all those tears were just so heart wrenching to watch - you could see and feel his pain, anguish and despair having to stay all alone in a hospital room. Kane begged Ollie to be a good boy for Aunty Irene and I'm sure that in his heart he wanted Ollie to stay strong. Before Kane disappeared from Ollie's room, we saw him give the boy a final kiss on the forehead and with his heart aching, he left the confines of the hospital room wondering when he will see his son again.

Ollie was making good progress in his recovery and was nearing the end of his stay in hospital and almost ready to be discharged. Kane would soon see his son again after Ollie's Mum Kirsty took him from his hospital bed to continue their life on the run. Their life on the run was cut short though as the Police, after a tip off from Irene, were closing in on the car containing the Phillips family. He made the agonising decision to persuade his wife and son to go to Irene's place before the pursuit continued. After years on the run and avoiding the Police, he was back in custody making deals left, right and centre to make sure that Kirsty wasn't implicated in any of his wrong doings and Irene for harbouring her knowledge of what Kirsty and Kane had done.

The day of Kane's court hearing was probably the most difficult one for him as both a loving Father and a husband. He knew the consequences of his actions and the implications of what the future would hold not being able to see his wife and son whilst in gaol. He spent quality time with his family before and after the verdict was read out. Time was of the essence especially since the prospect of not seeing his young boy grow up dawned upon him with such a long sentence handed out. He had to capture and memorise all the moments with Ollie that he could get: remembering his little smile, envisaging what he looked like, the feel of his hugs, the sound of his laughter, the sight of his tears and everything about his little boy. As he said a heartfelt goodbye to his wife and son, he felt it best for them to move on with their lives but he never forgot about them and neither did they.

Kane's return to Summer Bay a free man was a surprise to everyone but more so to Ollie. He was pleasantly surprised to see his Dad one day when a stray ball was kicked Kane's way. With his arms spread out Ollie ran towards his Dad, gave him a big cuddle and was delighted to see him again. The joy on Kane's face told the story of his joy at seeing Ollie again, that he loved him dearly and never stopped loving him.

He played the Shh! game with Ollie which Irene had taught him from the very beginning and was told to keep the secret of seeing Daddy to himself. Of course, he was so excited by the prospect of seeing Kane that whilst playing Pirates with Miles, he told his Mum and Miles that he saw his Daddy.

We next see Kane lying in hospital bed recovering from injuries he suffered whilst in a car crash trying to avoid Melody, who was in the middle of the road, on the night of the school formal. Ollie was brought in to see his Dad and they spent quality time reading, sharing family moments together with Kirsty and he even drew a picture for Kane. The interaction between those two was better than the writings from a Hallmark card - it was priceless and gorgeous, a very natural scene. When Kirsty took Ollie home for the night, he said goodbye to his Dad and told him that he loved him.

Once Kane was fully recovered from his injuries that he sustained in the car crash, he was ready to reclaim his life and his family. To do so, he persuaded Miles to let Kirsty and Ollie go as the Phillips family were a family unit, shared a bond together and needed to raise Ollie together. Kane didn't have much luck in the job department in Summer Bay and was given an opportunity to work up the coast - the only catch was that he had to leave the next day. Kirsty decided to go with him and once again the Phillips family were reunited!

Their union was to be short lived though as Kirsty returned to the Bay with news that Kane had taken off with Ollie. And so began the tug-o-war between Kane and Kirsty as Kirsty first snatched Ollie away from Kane and arrived at Irene's in the middle of the night. After seeing Kirsty with Miles the next morning in a brief encounter, Kane saw an opportunity to take Ollie away from Kirsty and he took it. He spent quality time with Ollie by the river throwing stones whilst his skimmed over the water. He cherished that time he spent with his son and it also helped him to realise that he was losing him to Kirsty who was falling out of love with Kane.https://www.backtothebay.net/features/OK3.jpg
Kane made a detour to the Caravan Park to visit Miles, where he punched Miles on the assumption that Kirsty was still harbouring feelings for him after he saw them fleetingly together that morning and that he wanted to break up his happy little family. Kane then found out the truth about Kirsty's feelings towards him and the final piece of the puzzle was put into place when he knew that Kirsty wanted to break it off and that she didn't love Miles nor wanted to be with him ever - this was said so that Kane would back off and understand but Kane realised that Kirsty loved Miles more and that she wanted to move on with Miles and not with him. It was a heart wrenching decision for Kane to make to move on without his family by his side. So he returned Ollie to his Mum at Irene's place, they talked and he apologised to Miles for the damage that he caused before he decided to move on and go back up the coast alone. He kissed his sleeping son goodbye and bid farewell never to be seen on our screens after that.

The following are a few comments from members about Ollie and Kane's time together on-screen:

Sam and Oliver Davis had great chemistry. Ollie is so lucky to have Kane for a Dad!

I thought Kane was a great father to him, but, I do think or at least it felt like, he left him too easily...Any scenes he had, however were magic, just not enough of them!

Oliver was so natural with Kane when he and Kirsty visited him in the hospital, you'd have thought he really was his Dad! I've noticed he always seems very relaxed and happy in scenes with Sam Atwell. I wonder if he already knew him before H&A, maybe his parents being friends with the actor or something? I know he's pretty much relaxed with everyone but with Kane (Sam Atwell) there definitely seems to be a connection. Whatever, well done, casting department!  They were perfect together and it was the only time the programme stayed true to Kane's character ie his determination to be a good father unlike his own abusive father.

They were magic together. I loved their scenes which made me sad when Kane left. I think Kane was a good father while he was around.

I totally buy Kane and him as father/son. I love him... so gorgeous.
(Anaya)
Kane seemed like a very loving father and Ollie portrayed a loving bond very well.
(Mistified)
Despite the fact that I disliked Kane, I though that he did do a good job with Ollie (but not as good a job as Miles)
