1-5

Well, it’s been a long road, getting from there to here, but we’re finally at the end of this poll. Who will be crowned your favourite character?

1. Sally Fletcher (108 points) ►NC◄

Played by Kate Ritchie
Well, in the end it’s not even close: For a fifth successive poll, Sally takes top spot. The cute kid from the original cast who outlasted almost all the adults, we have actually seen some more of her since the last poll, as she, um, returned to town to announce her only daughter had a terminal illness (could she really not have just come for a holiday?). Can currently be seen on 7Two as a young teenager. Which is nice.

2. Alf Stewart (70 points) ▲4

Played by Ray Meagher
Another riser: Alf came in number six last time but makes it up into second place. One of a handful of characters to have been in a soap opera ever since it started, the last year or two has seen Alf regain something of his grumpy old man persona, pleasing those who considered him to have gone too soft but confusing those who’d got used to him as a kindly grandfatherly figure.

3. Donald Fisher (64 points) ▲6

Played by Norman Coburn
Rising from number nine last time round we have Donald Fisher, the principal of Summer Bay High on and off for fifteen years. Starting out as a villain in the pilot, Don quickly became more complex and developed into the show’s reasonable authority figure, while pretty much all his children died. Last seen in 2007 as a bankrupt divorcee. Hopefully he’s a lot happier now.

4. Irene Roberts (61 points) ▲4

Played by Jacqy Phillips & Lynne McGranger
One of only two characters to have won the BTTB poll (so far…), since last time round Irene has managed to surpass Sally to be the show’s second longest serving regular and longest serving female, as well as the longest serving female character in any Australian drama ever. So I’m guessing you already know who she is? Runs the Diner and takes in a lot of waifs and strays.

5. Darryl Braxton (56 points) ▼2

Played by Stephen Peacocke
A slight dip for the last poll’s number three. You’d think that Brax would be on a straight path from gang leader to respectable citizen but instead he seems to keep meandearing back and forth along the path, as if the show wants him to be sympathetic but also thinks he’s more interesting when he’s operating outside the law. The target of about 90% of the villains that have appeared since 2011.

So there we have it – see you in 2016!
