Holden Charm > Tony & Jack

"I'm a father who is so proud of his son"

Soon after the Holdens arrived in the Bay it emerged that they had been run out of two towns by Harry Chambers, the father of the girl Jack killed while on duty. He had now tracked them down to the Bay and started making their lives a misery by making prank phone calls, hurling a brick through their window and appearing on local radio to tell everyone what Jack had done. He even sent a copy of a newspaper article to the Hunters with a note saying "How does it feel to be living next door to a murderer?" Because of this Tony was forced to tell the Hunters the whole story but by then the rest of the town was baying for blood and had organised a town meeting. Jack wanted to move away again but Tony talked him into fighting. After Harry had his say in the meeting Tony decided to speak and his passionate defence of his son turned the town around. Jack then made an emotional apology to Harry Chambers and the Holdens decided to stay in the Bay.

"You've taken about 10 years off my life this time"

Over the years Jack has had his fair share of hospital traumas and Tony has been at his bedside during them all. First there was the spider prank, then Peter bashed him to prevent him from finding out about his secret investigation, then there was the wedding explosion and subsequent liver transplant. Who can forget Tony carrying Jack out of the burning barn on his back?! Just when Jack had finally recovered from all that that he was beaten up at the police station and needed Martha to save his life by donating blood. Then if all that wasn't enough Jack was shot by his dodgy cop partner, George, and spent a few weeks in a coma. Tony tried to be realistic and consider the possibility that Jack may not wake up but Sam wouldn't hear of it and told Tony to stay away if he couldn't be positive. Luckily Jack woke up and made yet another full recovery.

"Do you feel good about yourself.... feel like a stud?"

When Beth died it was Jack's turn to support Tony. When Tony turned up at the crash site Jack struggled to tell him that Beth was in the car. Then when a distraught Tony tried to get to Beth, Jack had to stop him and hold him back. Later Tony confided to Jack that he didn't know how was going to be able to get through it again, after going through it once when Jack's mother had died. Jack continued to support Tony through his grief and tried to be there for him despite getting his head bitten off. A few weeks later when Tony went off the rails by sleeping with a succession of random women, Jack tried to talk some sense into him by telling him a few home truths. It seemed to do some good as Tony got his life back on track. Following an unsuccessful relationship with Jazz, Jack persuaded Tony to ask Rachel out as he thought she would be perfect for him.

"What have I done Dad?.... I don't know what I've done!"

When Sam disappeared and Jack went missing, Tony was going out of his mind with worry. When Jack eventually returned to the news that Sam was dead he was devastated and immediately turned to his father for support . Rachel admitted Jack to hospital as he was at breaking point but Tony was distraught that he should have taken better care of him. Tony also didn't want the police questioning him over Sam's 'murder' until he was ready. During the investigation Tony tried to look out for Jack as much as possible by keeping Jack and Martha apart, protecting him in his police interview and even getting himself arrested trying to prove Jack's innocence.

"I'll be rapt if I turn out to be as good a Dad as you've been"

Tony and Jack bonded throughout the rest of 2008. Tony was thrilled when Jack told him Martha was pregnant and he was going to be a grandfather. Jack also encouraged Tony when he was considering a vasectomy reversal and told him that he hoped to be as good a Dad as he had been. When Martha was diagnosed with cancer Tony was there for Jack every step of the way. He was there to support Jack in the hospital when Martha was having her operation and when Jack was upset because Martha wouldn't let him near her. Tony advised Jack to let things happened naturally and not push them. Towards the end of 2008 the boys decided some male bonding was in order and went out for a day on the Blaxland with Roman and Miles to forget their problems. However when they returned, Jack was as determined as ever to bring the developers down for possibly being responsible for a cancer cluster in the Bay. Tony tried to get Jack to back off but he wouldn't. Despite being distracted by the investigation, when Jack found out that Rachel was pregnant he told Tony how happy he was for them. When Martha bought Jack a boat, Jack couldn't wait to get started and Tony was over the moon he asked him to help.

"Jack was also my mate... my very, very best mate and I, quite literally, don't know what I'm gonna do without him"

When Jack went missing on the night of the school formal explosion, Martha was worried sick so Tony went out to find him. Little did he know that when he did find him his life would change forever. Tony was horrified to find Jack dead, having been shot by Angelo, and he held him in his arms crying out his name. Following Jack's death Tony tried to be there for Martha whilst also struggling in silence to cope himself. At the funeral Tony made a touching speech about Jack and couldn't hide his pain as he said a final goodbye to his son. At the wake, Tony found out that Angelo had killed Jack and his couldn't contain his anger. He launched a frenzied attack on Angelo and forced a confession out of him, as shocked friends and family looked on.
