THE HUNTER/HOLDEN HOUSE

JACK walks in. TONY sits at the table in the dark.

TONY

Aw, g’day mate.

JACK

You alright?

TONY

Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. I got Archie off to sleep and Kit crashed not long after so I thought I take advantage of the quiet while it lasted. Poor old Kit’s been struggling lately so I just hope she makes it through the memorial service, you know.

JACK

How do you feel about it?

TONY

Well it’s kind of like having the funeral all over again, you know, but I understand why the people here want to do something for her.

JACK

You know, if you want any help or if you want to talk, then I’m here.

TONY

I know mate, thanks. Actually I might crash as well. I think a good nights sleep might be the best thing for me. See you in the morning mate.

JACK

Right, night.

TONY walks into the bedroom.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

The following morning, KIM and IRENE stand at the counter.

IRENE

So, still twelve at the beach?

KIM

Yeah.

IRENE

See you there.

RACHEL walks in.

RACHEL

Hey Irene.

IRENE

Hey darl.

IRENE walks into the kitchen.

RACHEL

Hey.

KIM

Hey.

RACHEL

You left this at home.

KIM

Yeah, thanks. Things have been a bit frantic this morning.

RACHEL

Yeah, I didn’t here you leave the house.

KIM

Yeah, I got up about six to check on Kit. Apparently Archie was quite good last night. He only woke up a couple of times.

RACHEL

That’s good. Have you got time to sit down and have breakfast? I feel like I’ve hardly had a chance to see you since you got back.

KIM

No, I can’t Rachel. Amanda’s called a meeting at the gym. I’m already late, so.

RACHEL

Aw, you go. We’ll have plenty of time to catch up.

KIM

Listen, we’ll have breakfast in the morning, I’m promise.

RACHEL

OK, see you.

HUGH walks in.

KIM

Hey.

HUGH

Hey mate.

KIM walks out.

HUGH

Must be good to have him back.

RACHEL

Yeah, I get to spend some time with him I’ll let you know.

THE SURF CLUB

AMANDA, KELLI and TONY are there. KIM walks in.

TONY

You know, I just don’t understand how you could let this happen.

KIM

Sorry I’m late.

AMANDA

I dropped the ball. I admit it, but if I thought there was a better way to handle all this, then I would be doing it.

TONY

Amanda, why the hell did you not tell me this before today?

AMANDA

I didn’t want to burden you while you were away for Beth’s funeral.

TONY

Aw, so I’ve just got to deal with it now, have I?

KIM

Hey guys, what’s going on?

TONY

The gym is being sued.

KIM

What?

TONY

That’s what is going on.

AMANDA

A client was injured last week while Kelli and I were looking after the gym. He’s already started legal proceedings so we thought the best thing to do was shut the place do in the interim.

KELLI

Just until we know one way or the other. There’s still a chance that this case could come to nothing.

KIM

Hang on, how did this guy injure himself?

KELLI

We were looking for a qualified instructor to come in and this guy came in and asked a question about the equipment which I thought I could answer, but he ended up injuring his back.

TONY

So, if this case holds and he successfully sues?

AMANDA

I don’t have the kind of money he’s asking for. I am going to have to sell the gym.

KIM

What about insurance? Surely that covers you.

AMANDA

The insurance lapsed.

KIM

Aw, man.

AMANDA

I’m sorry. I’m really sorry.

KIM

This is just great.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

RACHEL, HUGH and KIM sit at a table. IRENE cleans a table.

KIM

How am I supposed to support Kit and Archie when I don’t even have a job?

RACHEL

They’ll manage.

HUGH

They’ll be other work out there, surely.

KIM

Yeah, you reckon. Summer Bay’s not exactly a thriving commercial hub now, is it?

RACHEL

Hey.

KIM

I’m sorry. It’s just that this is the last thing any of us needed right now.

RACHEL

I know this is a bit of a shock for you, but on my wage, we should be able to support Kit and pay the bills, at least for a while.

KIM

Rachel, you shouldn’t have to do that, alright. This is my kid.

RACHEL

Hey, that’s what married couples do. They support each other. I don’t mind, honestly.

KIM

I do mind, and I’m not like you. I didn’t go to Uni. I don’t have a million qualifications. I’m a personal trainer. That’s it. Alright, there’s no other gyms in Summer Bay and there’s one in Yabbie Creek.

RACHEL

I understand that. What I am saying is that we’ll manage together.

KIM

And what I am saying is that I don’t want to just manage. I want to be able to support my family and because of Amanda’s stupidity, I can’t do that. I’m sorry. I just don’t need you telling me that it’s all going to be OK when it’s not alright. Now I’ve got to go and try and find a job.

KIM walks away.

THE SURF CLUB

AMANDA and KELLI are in the gym.

KELLI

Have you thought any more about going to the memorial?

AMANDA

It’s all I can think about at the moment.

KELLI

Then I think you should go. Your instincts clearly telling you.

AMANDA

Alright. Yeah, I think I will. Will you be OK to pack this up by yourself.

KELLI

I’ll be fine. OK.

AMANDA

See you.

KELLI

See you.

AMANDA walks out. ETHAN walks through from the bar.

KELLI

Have you completely lost your mind?

ETHAN

Good to see you babe.

KELLI

Don’t start with that. What if she saw you?

ETHAN

Relax. I was careful. Now, I was thinking how much I’d enjoy a repeat of last weeks little get together. It’s a shame you don’t have you gym outfit on though.

KELLI

I can’t afford for you to take these stupid risks Ethan. We’ve talked about this. I need you to sit tight.

ETHAN

And what about what I need? I’m going crazy locked up in that stupid little dump of a motel.

KELLI

Now that she’s signed her house over to me she believes this whole sordid business. I’ve got her exactly where I want her. I just need you to be patient.

ETHAN

When do I get to see you?

KELLI

Midday at the pier. Everyone else will be at the memorial.

ETHAN

You promise?

KELLI

I promise, OK.

KELLI and ETHAN kiss.

KELLI

Now, come on. Get out of here before she comes back. Go.

ETHAN walks out.

THE HUNTER/HOLDEN HOUSE

TONY, JACK and KIT are there.

TONY

Ah, is the bathroom free?

KIT

Yeah, it’s all yours.

JACK

Eh, dad. I’m a bit concerned you haven’t said anything about the gym or losing your job.

TONY

Well, there’s nothing to say mate. I’ll deal with that when I have to.

JACK

Alright.

TONY

It’s fair to say that it could have come at a better time, but I’m over it.

JACK

Come on. Talk to me.

TONY

I don’t want to talk about the damm job OK Jack.

JACK

OK, fine. Sorry.

TONY

OK, I know what you’re trying to do. You’re trying to be supportive and that’s great, but that’s not what I want right, now, OK, so just relax, will you.

TONY walks through to the bathroom.

KIT

Is everything OK?

JACK

Yeah, it’s fine.

MATILDA walks out the bedrooms.

JACK

Hey, Matty, do you want to come for a drive? I’m going to get flowers and a few other things.

MATILDA

If Kit doesn’t mind.

KIT

No, go. I’ll see you there.

MATILDA

OK.

JACK

Alright, see you.

KIM walks in.

JACK

Hey mate.

KIM

Hey.

JACK and MATILDA walk out.

KIT

Hey, I heard about the gym. I’m sorry.

KIM

Yeah, listen. I just wanted to say that I’m still going to help out financially with things.

KIT

Oh, Kit. You’ve already been so generous. I don’t expect anything.

KIM

No, I want to contribute. This is really important to me.

KIT

OK, well just so you know, it’s not necessary. The money from mum’s share of the bars coming in. It’s.

KIM

Yeah.

KIT

It’s not much, but it’s something. Are you OK?

KIM

No, not really. It’s just I’m frustrated about the whole thing, you know. I kind of took it out on Rachel too.

KIT

I’m she giving you a hard time?

KIM

No, she wasn’t. She was being really supportive and trying to tell me it’s all going to be OK.

KIT

And you weren’t ready to hear it.

KIM

No I wasn’t.

KIT

So what are you doing here? Why aren’t you at home apologising?

KIM

It’s not that simple.

KIT

Isn’t it? You’re a jerk. Sorry.

KIM

Yeah, I know, it’s just that I wanted her to know that it wasn’t about how much money she had. It’s about me feeling useless because I can’t support you guys or her.

KIT

Kim, Rachel’s taken a lot on board this last couple of months and she’s been understanding and she’s been supportive and you have just thrown it back in her face.

KIM

Yeah, I know. I’m a jerk.

KIT

Yeah.

ARCHIE starts crying.

KIT

Ah, that’s my cue. You know where you should be.

THE BEACH

HUGH and RACHEL walk along.

RACHEL

Maybe I should have been less practical and more sympathetic. I mean, it’s a huge shock and losing your job all of a sudden like that.

HUGH

Yeah, but nevertheless you didn’t deserve to be spoken to like that, though I understand it from a guys point of view. It’s important to know that your family financially.

KIM walks over.

KIM

Hey you guys. Em, can I speak to you for a second?

RACHEL

Yeah.

HUGH

I’ll see you guys up there.

HUGH walks away.

KIM

Look, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have spoken to you guys like that before.

RACHEL

You were under so much pressure.

KIM

I just, I hate to think that you’re going to have to support me financially as well as taking on any responsibilities with Kit and the baby. You know, it’s too much.

RACHEL

I tried to tell you we’re married now. My money’s your money. It’s giving. We’re in this together.

KIM

I know. It’s just, you know, it’s so frustrating. I’ve got to find a new job now and I’ve got no idea what I’m going to do. It’s just that it’s really important to me.

RACHEL

OK, well I don’t have a problem with that.

KIM

Great.

RACHEL

What does worry me though is that you’ve been gone a week and the first real conversation we have turns into an argument. I know that you’re going to be busy with Archie, especially over the next couple of months, considering what Kit’s going through, but at the same time I think it’s important that we make a real effort to be there for each other.

KIM

Yeah, me too.

RACHEL and KIM hug. BELLE walks along the beach with a bag. MATILDA walks in the opposite direction.

BELLE

Hey.

MATILDA

Hi.

BELLE

I was just on my way to the service. Doesn’t it start in a few minutes?

MATILDA

Yeah, I just needed to get my head together.

BELLE

Right, I’ll leave you to it.

MATILDA

No, it’s OK. Stay. We went to see Lily this morning.

BELLE

Aw, how is she?

MATILDA

Really good. Yeah, she’s just trying to be positive, you know.

BELLE

Aw, that’s great.

MATILDA

Yeah.

BELLE

How are you?

MATILDA

Eh, better, better. I want out onto the rocks because, because I just wanted to forget about mum, you know, and now Lily nearly died because of me. Then, when I was in hospital I kind of asked mum for help. Like, I know it sounds crazy, but the thing is that, Lily’s OK now, you know. I don’t know. I guess it kind of made me feel close to mum again. It’s like if the bad stuff did happen, the good stuff wouldn’t have happened either, so that karma stuff that my mum was always talking about. You know, focusing on the positives.

BELLE

Is there anything I can do?

MATILDA

Well, you’ve listened to my rant, so I think you’ve already helped.

BELLE

Shall we go?

MATILDA and BELLE walk away. ALF, IRENE, RIC, KIM, KIT, ARCHIE, RACHEL and HUGH are there. MATILDA and BELLE walk over. RIC walks over to MATILDA.

RIC

Hey, I was getting worried. Is everything alright?

MATILDA

I’m fine.

RIC

You ready?

MATILDA

I think so. Where’s Tony?

JACK walks over to ALF and IRENE.

JACK

You guys haven’t seen dad, have you?

ALF

No, sorry mate.

JACK

He said he was going to follow Kit, but he’s not here. I’m really worried about him. He had a go at me before.

IRENE

Well, em, love, I’ll nick home. See what’s holding him up.

JACK

OK, thanks.

IRENE walks away. AMANDA walks around the corner.

KIT

What is she doing here? After everything she’s put Tony through this week, she turns up here.

KIM

Hey, Kit, don’t.

KIT, carrying ARCHIE walks over to AMANDA.

KIT

You’ve certainly got a nerve.

AMANDA

I just wanted to pay my respects to Beth and Tony. I feel terrible about what happened at the gym.

KIT

You feel terrible. Amanda, this is not about you. What makes you think my family would want you here?

THE HUNTER/HOLDEN HOUSE

TONY and IRENE are there.

TONY

I just can’t do it Irene. You know at the funeral, I was, I was kind of numb. You know, couldn’t feel a thing, but this time I’m feeling too much, like it’s all catching up with me. The last thing the kids needs is to see me lose it, that’s for sure.

IRENE

Believe me, the kids would rather see you lose it, rather than bottling it up inside like you have been. Today’s about saying goodbye to the woman that you loved in the place that she loved with the people that she loved. You need to be there.

TONY

I can’t do it on my own.

IRENE

You won’t be.

THE BEACH

JACK, ALF, MATILDA, BELLE, KIM, RACHEL, HUGH, KIT, RIC and ARCHIE are there. ALF walks over to JACK

ALF

How do you want to play this mate?

JACK

Perhaps we should just give them another minute.

IRENE and TONY walk along.

KIT

Jack, they’re here.

TONY

Em, sorry for the delay there folks. Firstly I’d like to welcome you all here to this memorial service for Beth Hunter. I know you all loved her dearly as I did. Em, just one second. Beth, eh, Beth loved Summer Bay. You know, she loved being part of this community and we’re here today to, eh, remember her and to say, to say goodbye. Beth was a, eh, parent. She was a friend. She was a co-worker. She was a, eh, community activist. She was loved. She was by far the best thing in my life.

The waves crash off the rocks. MATILDA now stands in TONY’S place.

MATILDA

I was playing with my beautiful young nephew Archie the other day and I found myself calling him sweetheart and after I said it, I realised it was my mother’s voice I was hearing. When she’d say, are you all right sweetheart, or how was your day sweetheart. You know, you just, you knew that you were loved and nothing was going to hurt you because she was going to do whatever she could to be there for, to fix your problem or soothe your tears or just make you laugh. You know, when she said that one word sweetheart it was just amazing how it could make you feel. It’s only a small memory that I have of her, but it made me realise that there is just so many of those memories that, that me and my family can, can think about and that we’ll never forget. I miss her every day and I probably will for the rest of my life, but I’ll also take those memories with me to remind me of the wonderful loving and passionate woman that she was and I’ll always know that I’m special because I’m one of her sweethearts.

MATILDA starts crying. RIC comforts her. TONY throws some petals out to see followed by KIT and MATILDA and then JACK. IRENE and BELLE huddle together. ALF watches on.

THE SURF CLUB

A pictures of BETH sits in the surf club.

THE HUNTER/HOLDEN HOUSE

JACK is in the kitchen. MATILDA and TONY sit on the couch. KIT walks out the bedroom.

TONY

That was quick.

KIT

Yeah, I know. If he wakes up, I’ll scream. Mum would have liked the service today, don’t you think.

TONY

Yeah, she always liked it down the beach.

KIT

And she would have been really proud of you Matty.

MATILDA

I think she would have been proud of all of us.

KIT

Especially you Tony. You’ve been so strong. I don’t know what we would have done without you.

JACK walks through from the kitchen.

JACK

Here we go guys.

TONY

Thanks mate. You know, I think I might propose a toast. This is to your mum.

KIT

To mum.

TONY

To mum.

AMANDA’S MANSION

AMANDA and KELLI are there.

KELLI

I take it things didn’t go to well at the memorial.

AMANDA

I guess you could say that and I stupidly thought I was doing the right thing by Tony. The reality is I just wanted to be there. I just wanted to feel like I was part of the community. What a wake up call.

KELLI

Things will come right for you, you know. You just have to sit tight.

AMANDA

Well I’m not going to hold my breath. Thank you, for sticking by me. You’ll never know how much that means to me. I shouldn’t be surprised really. What do they say? All bad things that you do come back to haunt you.

AMANDA looks at her drink before putting it down and walking out the kitchen.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

BELLE sits at the table on her laptop. IRENE walks across.

IRENE

I can’t believe the gall of the woman showing up at the service like that after everything she did. As if today wasn’t hard enough for Tony.

BELLE

Probably wasn’t her best idea. Part of me still felt sorry for her.

IRENE

Gee, that’s a turn up for the books.

BELLE

Yeah, she’s been a complete cow in the past. I know that better than anyone, but this time she didn’t mean for it to happen.

IRENE

I think she might have used that excuse more than once darl.

BELLE

OK, she isn’t perfect, but she is my mum. I might stick around and work some more on my art project if that’s OK?

IRENE

Of course it is darl. I better get stuck into some work anyway.

IRENE walks away. BELLE looks at one of her photos and notice something in the background. She zooms and realises it’s KELLI and ETHAN.
