THE SURF CLUB

ALF

Thanks fellas. Head home and get some rest, yeah?

IRENE

You’re not calling off the search, surely?

THERE IS GENERAL DISAGREEMENT WITH THIS SUGGESTION.

ALF

There’s nothing more we can do in the dark.

ROBBIE

Spot lights, torches, come on!

ALF

It’s too dangerous. The last thing we need now is somebody else out there, lost in the bush.

JOSIE

But there must be something –

ALF

No buts, Josie. I’m sorry, but this is how it’s got to be.

ROBBIE

Tasha and the others don’t get to go home – why should we?

THE BUSH

KIM APPROACHES COLLEEN, LEAH, DAN, TASHA AND HAYLEY, WHO ARE ALL HUDDLED AROUND A FIRE.

KIM

No sign of anyone. It looks like we’re in for an all-nighter.

HAYLEY

But Tasha might not make it through the night.

KIM

Ha she said anything else?

COLLEEN

She mentions Robbie’s name every now and then.

HAYLEY OFFERS TO SHARE HER BLANKETS WITH KIM, AND HE ACCEPTS, HER ARM AROUND HIS SHOULDERS.

KIM

Thanks.

HAYLEY

I don’t understand – it’s been ages since we sent that flare.

KIM

I know.

HAYLEY

With all the equipment they have these days, like the radars and the GPS thingies, I mean surely somebody would have found us by now.

LEAH STANDS UP AND WALKS AWAY FROM THE GROUP AND HAYLEY ATTEMPTS TO FOLLOW HER.

DAN

It’s OK.

HE FOLLOWS LEAH.

DAN

No one blames you, OK?

LEAH

Well they should. We haven’t been found because we’re not where we’re meant to be and that’s my fault.

DAN

It’s just gonna take a bit more time, that’s all.

LEAH

Yeah, time that Tasha doesn’t have. Am I a curse?

DAN

Of course not.

LEAH

No, I’m serious. Wherever I go, bad luck seems to follow me.

DAN

Babe, we’ve just got to keep our heads together for Tasha, OK?

LEAH

Yeah.

THE CAMP FIRE

COLLEEN

Everything will be alright when it’s light. It’s always ten times worse in the dark.

TASHA MUMBLES IN HER SLEEP.

TASHA

R… Robbie...

COLLEEN

It’s alright, Pet. He’ll be here.,

MORNING - THE BUSH

DAN

It’s been over 15 hours – we can’t wait any longer. Tasha needs help.

KIM

Look, we’ve been through this.

DAN

Yeah, well we don’t have any other choice.

LEAH APPROACHES THEM.

LEAH

About what?

DAN

I’m gonna go look for help.

LEAH

Dan!

DAN

Yeah, I know the risk, but we can’t leave Tasha like this any more.

KIM

Alright, but look – you can’t go by yourself.

LEAH

Well, OK. I’ll go.

DAN

No.

KIM

I’ll go.

DAN

No – you’re injured, you’ll hold me up.

DAN TURNS TO LEAH.

DAN

And you had an operation, what – a few weeks ago?

LEAH

And I feel fine. You both keep telling me not to blame myself, so let me do something please.

COLLEEN

What’s all the fighting about?

DAN

Nothing.

LEAH

Come on, we’re wasting time.

TASHA MAKES UNCOMFORTABLE NOISES IN HER SLEEP.

COLLEEN

It’s alright Pet, I’m here.

LEAH COVERS TASHA WITH HER BLANKETS.

THE SURF CLUB

ALF

No, there’s no way.

MARC

Look, I know it’s a long shot, but I kept waking up during the night thinking about it.

SCOTT

Why would the pilot fly off his normal route?

MARC

Well, any number of reasons. I mean, maybe someone asked to see something different.

ALF

Ken Baron’s a good pilot, he’s not –

MARC

Look, just for argument’s sake, OK? Let’s say they flew even 15 minutes of course, that could put them anywhere along this line. And there’s a lot of beach on there, so it’s make sense; he’d try to land somewhere like that.

ALF

But the chopper was up for hours. It didn’t see anything.

MARC

But it never went this wide. Look, I just – I reckon it’d be worth exploring.

ALF

Oh… it’s a lot of extra ground we’d have to cover.

JESSE

I say we give it a go

SCOTT

I agree. What harm can it do?

ALF

Well, I suppose at this stage, anything’s worth a try. I’ll put it to Search and rescue.

JOSIE

What’s going on?

JESSE

Marc’s had a great idea. And if you’re right… we’ll all owe you big time.

THE BUSH

KIM

Be careful, guys.

DAN

Yeah Mate, thanks – we’ll be fine. Are you sure you’re feeling up to it?

LEAH

Yeah, positive. Tash, we’re going to go get help, OK?

HAYLEY

Stay safe.

DAN

Thanks. OK.

LEAH

We’ll be back soon.

HAYLEY

See you, guys.

KIM

See you.

COLLEEN

Be careful.

KIM

How is she?

HAYLEY

Ahhhh, hanging in there. Just.

HAYLEY

How are you?

KIM

Yeah, I’m alright.

HAYLEY

Really?

KIM

I’m gonna go grab some more firewood, then I’ll come back and make something to eat.

KIM HEADS AWAY FROM HAYLEY. SHE FOLLOWS HIM.

HAYLEY

Hey! Thank you.

KIM

What for?

HAYLEY

For taking care of us the way you have. It’s been great.

KIM

Hayles, look. I haven’t done any more than anyone else has done.

HAYLEY

No, no – I mean it. We couldn’t have got this far without you.

THEY LOOK INTO EACHOTHER’S EYES AND KIM WALKS AWAY.

HAYLEY

I’ll won’t ever forget it.

SHE SMILES AT KIM AND WALKS AWAY.

THE SURF CLUB

IRENE

What do you mean, they’re gonna widen the search?

JESSE

Marc thinks the pilot might have flown another route.

ALF

You blokes got a sec?

MARC

Yeah.

BETH?

Are you sure that you have enough water with you?

ROBBIE

Mum!

BETH

I just want you to be very careful.

IRENE APPROACHES THEM.

ROBBIE

Look, Tasha’s the one we have to worry about.

IRENE

Beth, thank you so much for coming Love.

BETH

Oh, I am so sorry I wasn’t here yesterday.

THEY HUG.

ALF

Alright fellas, listen up. We’re going to split you up into groups, OK? A couple of groups will go and check out Marc’s suggestion – Jesse, you and Marc lead one group, Scott, you lead another. The rest of you spread out, but keep searching under the flight path. The blokes from Mangrove River  will be there with you.

ROBBIE

Come on, let’s go!

ALF

Woah, woah, woah, not till we get the coordinates.

BARRY HANDS IRENE A DRINK.

IRENE

Oh, no thank you Love, I’m already bouncing off the walls. You think we would have heard something by now, wouldn’t you, if…

BARRY HANDS IRENE A TISSUE AND LAYS A HAND UPON HER SHOULDER AS SHE LOSING CONTROL AND BEINGS TO CRY.

IRENE

I’m sorry, I promised myself I wouldn’t turn on the waterworks.

ALF

Are you ready to go Barry?

BARRY TAKES ALF ASIDE.

BARRY

Look, if I can be of more use here, I think I’d prefer to stay.

ALF

Yeah, fair enough. We could probably do with a few fresh reserves here on the bench here.

ALF APPROACHES RESCUE WORKERS.

ALF

OK everyone, make sure you stay in radio contact, definitely don’t split from your groups – the last thing we need is somebody else out there, lost. OK, away you go and good luck.

BARRY CONTINUES TO COMFORT IRENE, AS BETH KISSES SCOTT GOODBYE.

THE BUSH

TASHA IS MAKING NOISES IN HER SLEEP WHICH SUGGEST THAT SHE IS IN AGONY.

COLLEEN

Pet, just rest.

TASHA

Tell… Robbie… that… I love… him…

COLLEEN

Oh look Love, you can tell him that yourself.

TASHA

Promise… me…

COLLEEN

If the good Lord above can spare an old thing like me, he’s not gonna snuff out your life, is he?

TASHA

Promise… me… You’re… moving.. so… far away…

TASHA’S EYES BEGIN TO CLOSE.

COLLEEN

I promise.

THE SURF CLUB

ALF IS CONVERSING VIA RADIO.

Well, it’s the closest thing we’ve had to good news so far, hey? Yeah, thanks Mate.

IRENE

What’s happened?

ALF

Oh, there was just  forecasts for a storm this afternoon. Marc was just saying that the forecast’s been revised.

JOSIE WALKS AWAY, HER EYES FILLED WITH TEARS AND BETH FOLLOWS HER.

BETH

We’re all in the same boat, if you feel like talking.

JOSIE

Thanks anyway.

JOSIE WALKS AWAY FROM BETH.

PETER ARRIVES.

PETER

Alf, sorry Mate, I got here as fast as I could.

ALF

Oh, g’dday mate. Sorry, I haven’t got anything to tell you.

IRENE

But if positive thoughts count for anything, they’re gonna coming running through the door any minute.

PETER

Is there any news from the search teams?

THE BUSH

DAN AND LEAH ARE WALKING THROUGH THE BUSH, LEAH STRUGGLING CONSIDERABLY.

DAN

Just rest for a second.

LEAH TRIES TO USE HER MOBILE PHONE.

LEAH

There’s still no range.

LEAH BENDS OVER DOUBLE IN AGONY.

DAN

Are you alright?

LEAH

Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just tired and thirsty.

DAN HANDS LEAH A BOTTLE OF WATER.

LEAH

I’m just gonna go and try the phone again.

LEAH STANDS BEHIND A TREE.

DAN

I’ll take you back if you want.

LEAH

No, no. I’m just gonna try the phone over here.

DAN

Righto, righto.

LEAH EXAMINES THE WOUND ON HER LOWER STOMACH, WHICH IS BLEEDING SVERELY.

DAN

Leah?

LEAH

Yeah, I’m OK. I can walk for hours if I have to.

ANOTHER AREA OF THE BUSH

JESSE

We’ll head down this track towards the gully and then we’ll cross the falls.

SCOTT

Well, we’ll head across the bridge. If we see anything, we’ll let you know.

ALL RESCUE WORKERS WISH EACHOTHER LUCK AS THEY DEPART ON THEIR SEARCH.

SCOTT

OK guys, I figure we head –

ROBBIE

No, it’s that way. Trust me, it’s just – they’re that way, I can feel it.

ROBBIE HEADS IN THE OPOSITE DIRECTION TO HIS FELLOW GROUP MEMBERS.

SCOTT

Robbie, wait! Look, what’s got into you, mate?

ROBBIE

Tash is this way.

SCOTT

How do you know?

ROBBIE

I told you, I can feel it.

SCOTT

Robbie –

ROBBIE

I can’t explain it, OK? When you love someone,  you just know what you have to do.

ROBBIE CONTINUES TO WALK IN HIS PREFERED DIRECTION.

SITE OF CRASH

KIM APPROACHES HAYLEY AND HANDS HER A PACKET OF CHEWING GUM.

KIM

Lunch is served. Forgot I had it.

HAYLEY

Sugar free?

KIM

Yeah, what can I say? I’m a cheap date.

HAYLEY SMILES TO HERSELF.

KIM

What?

HAYLEY

Oh, nothing.

KIM

No, that’s the first smile I’ve seen on anyone since we go here. I’d like to know what it’s about.

HAYLEY

You still haven’t worked it out, have you?

KIM

Worked what out?

HAYLEY

The whole reason why Leah invited you on this trip.

KIM

She had a reason?

THEY LOOK AT EACHOTHER.

KIM

You mean… you and me?

HAYLEY

Yep. Yeah, she was trying to set us up.

KIM

No way!

HAYLEY

You don’t have to sound so horrified

KIM

No, I’m not. It just took me by surprise, that’s all. I mean, not that’s it’s a bad surprise. Any guy would be lucky to be set up with you, even if he does have to plunge 10,000 feet in the process.

HAYLEY

Like I’d be prepared to consider anyone who wouldn’t do that.

COLLEEN COMES RUNNING UP TO THEM.

COLLEEN

Kim! Hayley! She’s barely breathing, we’ve got to do something!

THE THREE RUN TOWARDS TASHA WHO IS MOANING AND THRASHING UPON THE GROUND.

THE SURF CLUB

BETH

You don’t need to sit on your own. I know it’s hard to keep positive right now.

JOSIE

You think you’ve paid the price, but it’s never enough

BETH

Sorry?

JOSIE

Your  mistakes – they will always come back to haunt you…. and the people that you love.

BETH

Josie, I don’t know what you’re talking about.

A HELICOPTER IS HEARD AND JOSIE JUMPS UP FROM HER CHAIR.

ALF

Chopper’s coming in, Mate. You ready to go?

BETH IS LEFT TO PONDER JOSIE’S WORDS.

THE BUSH

HAYLEY, KIM AND COLLEEN ARE HUDDLED AROUND TASHA.

HAYLEY

Stay with us, OK? Hang in there, Tash.

KIM

I’m gonna go get some firewood. Can you sit with her?

COLLEEN

Yeah.

KIM WALKS AWAY AND HAYLEY FOLLOWS.

HAYLEY

How are you hanging in there?

KIM

Yeah, I’m alright.

HAYLEY

You’re allowed to say if you’re not.

KIM

You don’t have to be a genius to work out that Tasha’s in serious trouble. I just feel so useless. I keep waiting for her next breath to be her last.

HAYLEY

It’s not gonna happen Kim, OK? You have to believe me.

KIM

Look, it was a miracle we survived that crash… I don’t think we can expect much more, do you?

KIM CRIES A LITTLE.

KIM

I’m sorry.

HAYLEY

For what?

KIM

I meant to be the one holding it together here.

HAYLEY

There’s no rule that says that.

THEY LEAN IN TOWARDS EACHOTHER AND KISS.

COLLEEN

Kim, have you got that firewood?

KIM

Yeah, coming.

ANOTHER AREA OF THE BUSH

DAN

Jus keep moving, OK?

LEAH IS CLEARLY IN AGONY.

DAN SEES A CARAVAN PARKED THROUGH THE TREES.

DAN

Look!

DAN

Hello?

LEAH

Hello, is anyone there? There must be someone there.

THEY BANG ON THE CARAVAN WINDOWS, BUT RECEIVE NO REPLY. THEY PEER INTO THE VAN, WHICH IS A MESS INSIDE.

DAN

Nobody’s been in here for ages.

THEY SEAT THEMSELVES ON THE STEP.

LEAH

Why would there be a van in the middle of nowhere, with nobody living in it?

DAN

Want a drink?

LEAH

No.

DAN

What now?

LEAH

I don’t know… I wasn’t meant to be like this.

DAN TAKES A RING BOX FROM HIS POCKET.

DAN

No, it wasn’t. It was going to be a special day. I forgot to give you this – I was going to give it to you on the plane, but you may as well have it now.

DAN HANDS LEAH THE BOX, WHICH SHE OPENS TO REVEAL A RING.

DAN

Do you like it?

LEAH

Love it.

DAN

Great.

LEAH

No, I do. Thanks. You wanna put it on?

DAN

Yeah.

DAN TAKES THE RING FROM LEAH AND PLACES IT ON HER FINGER.

DAN

Check it out, hey? Not even a scratch on it.

LEAH

Yeah well, very symbolic of a lot of things.

DAN

Yeah well it’s lucky, because I haven’t had the thing insured yet.

LEAH

D’you mind? I’m trying to have a moment here.

DAN

Sorry.

LEAH

I was just thinking about what I said before, about being cursed.  You were right, I was being ridiculous. If these last few weeks have taught me anything, no matter how hard things are or whatever, you’re always gonna be there.

DAN

Yeah well, that you can count on…and I promise no matter what happens in the marriage, not even the worst day  is gonna be as bad as the last 24 hours.

ANOTHER AREA OF THE BUSH

SCOTT

Rob, wait!

ALF’S VOICE IS HEARED VIA RADIO CONTACT.

ALF

This is base, over.

SCOTT

Go ahead, over.

ALF

How are you blokes travelling, over?

SCOTT

We’re not. We’re just a little… sidetracked. Don’t worry about us… we’re heading back, out.

ROBBIE

No way!

SCOTT

Come on Rob, we’re not getting anywhere. Now you’ve got the others worried about us.

ROBBIE

We’re close, I know it.

SCOTT

Rob –

ROBBIE

Stop telling me what to do! My girl’s out there - she’s in trouble, I have to find her. There are so many things I have to tell her. I need her to know I love her, so there is no way I’m turning back, no way. You have no idea how I feel.

ROBBIE TURNS TO CONTINUE SEARCHING, WHILE SCOTT HAS A LOOK OF REALISATION UPON HIS FACE.

THE SITE OF THE CRASH

COLLEEN

Come on, pet.

TASHA

I can’t breath.

KIM

Come on Tash, you can’t give up on us now.

ROBBIE’S SHOUTS ARE HEARED ECHOING THROUGH THE TREES.

ROBBIE

Tasha!

HAYLEY

Do you hear that?

COLLEEN

What?

HAYLEY

Listen.

COLLEEN

I can’t hear anything.

ROBBIE

Tasha!

THE RESCUE WORKERS ARE SEEN ACROSS THE RIVER.

COLLEEN

Oh, thank heavens!

KIM AND HAYLEY

Here! We’re over here.

ROBBIE RUNS ACROSS THE WATER TO TASHA.

ROBBIE

Tasha!

SCOTT

Thank God you’re OK. Where are Leah and Dan?

HAYLEY

They’ve gone to look for help.

SCOTT

And Ben?

KIM

He’s dead.

SCOTT CONTACTS ALF VIA RADIO CONTACT.

SCOTT

To base, Alf we’ve found them. Colleen, Hayley, Kim and Tasha. Tasha’s not in a good way, we need to airlift her out of here now.

ROBBIE

Come on Scott, we need a doctor.

THE SURF CLUB

ALF

Alright, keep looking, Leah and Dan have got to be out there somewhere.

SCOTT AND HIS RESCUE TEAM ENTER. BETH RUNS TO HER ELDEST SON.

BETH

Oh, are you OK?

SCOTT

Yeah, I’m fine.

BETH

Oh, where’s Robbie? Has he gone to hospital with Tasha?

SCOTT

Yeah.

ALF

How bad is she?

SCOTT

Well it’s hard to say, but it didn’t look good.

THE HOSPITAL

TASHA IS BROUGHT IN ON A TROLLEY. THE DOCTORS DISCUSS HER CONDITION AMONG THEMSELVES, AS TASHA DRIFTS IN AND OUT OF  CONSCIOUSNESS, EVERYBODY AROUND HER A BLUR.

FLYNN

Tasha, it’s Flynn. Can you hear me? I’m just going to listen to your chest for a second.

TASHA’S EYES CLOSE.

FLYNN

Take her into resus’.

ROBBIE

Is she going to be OK?

FLYNN ASKS A NURSE TO ENSURE THAT SEVERAL PROCEEDURES ARE CARRIED OUT UPON TASHA,URGENTLY.

ROBBIE

What’s happening, what’s wrong?

COLLEEN, HAYLEY AND KIM ARE BROUGHT TO SEE FLYNN, WHO BREIFLY EXAMINES THEIR INJURIES, AS ROBBIE STARES AT THE IMMOBILE TASHA.
