THE SURF CLUB

PAULINI is singing.

PAULINI

Yeah, yeah, oh, ohhhh.

The crowd including KIRSTY, DAN, KANE, LEAH, JOSIE, BETH, IRENE, ALF, HAYLEY, JESSE, LANCE and COLLEEN.

PAULINI

We’ve had out time of trials and tribulations don’t mistake me; you broke your promises, but that’s OK, I’m not forsaken; I’m here to stay, I’m all the way in love with you, you know that; Yesterday was just a day, it’s all been left behind us.

HAYLEY walks out the room and into the gym.

PAULINI

It won’t be the same if you went away; I know my heart is strong; I am weaker through the evening; So let’s just leave this the way it is; I know that we can do this if we try; Try to show each other that love is possible; There’s the reason why we can be incredible.

IRENE walks through.

IRENE

Are you OK?

HAYLEY

Yeah, yeah, I’m fine.

IRENE

I was like this with your dad. It’s always these really big moments that you miss that person next to you, and there’s just an empty space.

HAYLEY

I know that this will sound silly, but I’ve been waiting for him. Noah. I don’t know, I just thought that maybe. Look, I expected him to be here. Just standing there smiling. Why could it happen with dad and not with him? Maybe I just imagined.

IRENE

No, you listen to me sweetheart. You’ve got a gift. I don’t understand it, but you’ve got a gift, no doubt about it. There’s no knowing how it works. I mean, we’re talking ghost. God, knows what the rules are. One thing I do know is that Noah is here, this is him, today. All of us here remember him and we still love him.

HAYLEY and IRENE cuddle.

PAULINI

I’m letting go of everything, oh yeah; I know we can do this, I know we can try, try to love each other; Love is possible there’s no reason why we can’t be incredible; I’m letting go of everything that’s happened before; I know we can do this I know we can try

The crowd cheers.

COLLEEN

I voted for you love. So did Lancie. This is my Lancie. You might have lost, but you’re a winner to me.

JOSIE gets up on the stage.

JOSIE

And a big thank you to Paulini for helping make the day even more special than it already is.

The crowd claps.

PAULINI

The town’s beautiful. I’m definitely coming back here for a holiday.

COLLEEN

There’s always a spare room at my place.

The crowd laughs.

IRENE

Oh, god save her.

COLLEEN

What’s funny about that?

LANCE

She’s right mum, eh.

JOSIE

I’d like to raise your glasses and to officially welcome Noah’s on to the social map of Summer Bay. We officially declare Noah’s open.

JESSE

To Noah’s.

CROWD

To Noah’s.

Later, COLLEEN walks up to JOSIE, PAULINI and JESSE.

JOSIE

I can not thank you enough.

PAULINI

Aw, I’m having such a great time.

COLLEEN

Yoo-hoo Paulini. Come over here, there’s someone I want you to meet.

COLLEEN drags PAULINI away.

JESSE

I like her.

JOSIE

Yeah, class without attitude.

JESSE

Yeah, a bit like you actually.

COLLEEN and PAULINI are standing with ALF and LANCE.

COLLEEN

Don’t they make a handsome couple. Romantic place Summer Bay. You better be careful or one of our lads will sweep you off your feet.

PAULINI

There are some cute ones.

COLLEEN

They certainly are. Always has been. Lancie was quite a blade in his time, weren’t you Lancie and Alf too.

ALF

Aw, strewth woman.

COLLEEN

Well, you were Alf. Mind you, there has been a bit of water under the bridge since then.

ALF

More gob than grey matter.

PAULINI

I’d take that as a compliment.

ALF

Yeah.

PAULINI

Yeah.

COLLEEN

See, Paulini understands things that you don’t. Aw, come out here. I want you to meet Kane. He hasn’t been well.

COLLEEN and PAULINI walk away.

LANCE

Sorry about that mate.

ALF

Aw, she drives me flamin’ mad, but you wouldn’t be without her. You tell her I said that and I’ll throttle you.

COLLEEN and PAULINI are with KANE and KIRSTY.

KANE

How’s the album going?

PAULINI

Fantastic. I can’t wait to get started on the next one.

KIRSTY walks over to BETH.

KIRSTY

Hey.

BETH

Oh, what happened?

KIRSTY

How come?

BETH

Well, you left the star to come talk to me.

KIRSTY

Don’t be silly. You’re a star in my eyes. I just wanted to see how you’re doing.

BETH

I just wanted to ask you the same thing.

KIRSTY

I’m great. And we’re so excited about the baby.

BETH

Aw, I’m thrilled for you.

KIRSTY

Thanks.

BETH

Em, I just want you to know, that whatever’s happened, I will always consider you like one of my own.

KIRSTY

Thanks. You’ve always been like a mum to me.

BETH and KIRSTY cuddle.

COLLEEN

Aw, what those two have been through. It makes picking the dress pale into comparison doesn’t Kane.

KANE

Yeah, it’s been a rough year.

COLLEEN

Aw, there’s Sally and Flynn. I better see what’s happening. Keep an eye on Paulini for me.

COLLEEN walks away.

KANE

She means well.

PAULINI

She’s adorable.

COLLEEN

Did you manage to get anything sorted?

SALLY

Everyone’s either booked for a christening or a wedding.

COLLEEN

Oh dear.

FLYNN

We had to cancel so it looks like the strike was a blessing in disguise. At least nobody came here to see it except.

COLLEEN

Lancie.

SALLY

Yeah, I know. I feel terrible. I’m sorry.

COLLEEN

Aw, no. Don’t you worry about him. It’s you two we’re worried about.

DAN, LEAH, ALF and LANCE walk up to them.

LEAH

How’s it going?

ALF

Yeah, we heard.

DAN

Is there anything we can do?

COLLEEN

Well I told them not to worry about Lancie.

ALF

Yeah, just give Sal a go, eh.

SALLY

I called everybody that was coming down from the city, and we’re just going to reschedule till early January.

FLYNN

Yeah, people have already booked in around Christmas and new year so.

ALF

You wouldn’t read about it, would you, eh. The whole joint burning down.

FLYNN

Certainly a story to tell Pippa when she gets older.

DAN

At least you guys can laugh about it.

FLYNN

Yeah, yeah. We’re OK. We’re just a bit, you know, disappointed.

SALLY

I feel for Reverend Adams. He’s lost his church.

FLYNN

Anyway, can you just pass it on for us that, you know, the christenings cancelled.

SALLY

Yeah. We just don’t want to have to keep saying it over and over.

LEAH

Yeah, of course.

ALF

Yeah, don’t worry about that. Leave it to us.

SALLY

Yeah, thank you.

SALLY and FLYNN walk away.

JOSIE

We’ve got two choices. We can either stand here and feel sorry for them or we could do something. Personally, I’d prefer do something. I need your help.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SALLY and FLYNN, carrying PIPPA walk in.

FLYNN

That could have waited till tomorrow. I mean I can’t believe that wardrobe was so heavy.

SALLY

Yeah, I think Leah and Dan were trying to give us something else to think about.

They walk in. BETH, ALF, IRENE, COLLEEN, JESSE, KANE, KIRSTY, LANCE and JOSIE are there.

CROWD

Surprise.

FLYNN

Wahl, this is amazing.

JOSIE

All will be explained in due course. Colleen just needs Pippa for a moment.

COLLEEN

Yeah, I only need her for a moment and then I’ll bring her back. Here’s your auntie Colleen.

SALLY

What is going on here?

JOSIE

You just stand there. No more questions.

LEAH and DAN walk in.

LEAH

Hello.

DAN

Smile, you’re on candid camera.

FLYNN

So you were in on this?

DAN

Yeah, we were kind of decoy.

LEAH

Yeah, I felt like a bit of a spy following you back. We had to give you a two minute head start.

FLYNN

So I carried that enormous wardrobe for absolutely nothing. All right.

JESSE

All for a good cause mate.

JOSIE

Now we’re all here and Colleen will have had enough time to do her things.

IRENE

Everything bad I ever said about her, I take it back.

JOSIE

So here we all her. We may not be able to give you your christening, but we did want to show you how happy we are for you. Lance has got something to say.

LANCE

Ah, yeah. Yeah, I just want you to all know how much Sal means to me, eh. Eh, how chuffed I was when she asked me to be godfather. I was always a dropkick of a kid, but lucky my mum’s not in the room, eh, because she always sticks up for me, but I was, and will all know, or those of you that were here anyway. Yeah, yeah, I used to act like I didn’t care, but when I stuffed up it really used to worry me and sometimes I’d get real down on meself. When I felt like that I’d go sit on the caravan steps over there and think all sorts of stupid thoughts. Every time, I’d feel this little hand in mine and this little voice that would say, are you all right Lancie? That would be Sal. She was always there for me. Somehow she always knew when I needed her. She was always there. That’s why I’m glad to be here for her today. Sal, I’m here as a mate to say, I love you, we all love you and well, whenever there christening is I’ll be back.

COLLEEN walks in.

COLLEEN

Here she is. The little baby herself.

SALLY

This is beautiful.

COLLEEN

Isn’t the stitching gorgeous. We couldn’t have her not dressed in something special and you have to save the christening gown for the day.

JOSIE

You can thank Hayley for that.

HAYLEY

Aw, it was just a quick dash into Yabbie Creek.

JOSIE

I know that the religious side of things is important to you so I’ve asked Alf to say a little prayer for us.

ALF

Yeah, well, eh, I’m not real flash in the prayer department, but this one comes from the heart. God, we’ve had a year where sometimes we’ve wondered what you were up to, but then so the rest of the world, I suppose, so why should Summer Bay be any different, but when I stand back and think about one thing that happened in the middle of all that, it makes me very confident about going forward into the future and that one is that beautiful little girl we see in Sal’s arms. Thank you for delivering Pippa to Sal safe and sound. You’re a mysterious bloke sometimes, but when we look around and see Sally and Flynn and little Pippa, we know you’re still there and we know you still care. Amen.

JOSIE

And there’s someone here who wants to carry on the tradition that was set in the house sixteen years or so ago. For those of you who don’t know the story Colleen will expand.

COLLEEN

Well this little mite was sick in bed and couldn’t go to the concert, so the concert came to her. Johnny Farnham came himself and sang to Sally upstairs in her bed. Aw, it was ever so exciting.

JOSIE

And of course, Colleen told Paulini.

PAULINI walks in.

PAULINI

Here’s my idol too Sally. If it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for me. It’s nearly Christmas sp I thought I’d sing one of the most beautiful songs there is about a mother and child and this is for you Pippa. Silent night, holy night, all is calm and all is bright, round your virgin mother and child, holy infant so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

THE BEACH HOUSE

KIRSTY and KANE walk in.

KIRSTY

Are you sure you’re OK babe.

KANE

Yeah.

KIRSTY

Yeah.

KANE

It was good to be there.

KIRSTY

Mmm, fun wasn’t it?

KANE

It was good to be a part of it.

IRENE walks through from the kitchen.

IRENE

Yeah, it was a special day all right. It’s what being a small town’s all about. Everyone pulling for each other and it took Josie of all people to remind us.

KIRSTY

I know, funny that.

KANE

Just the beginning babe, just the beginning.

THE PALACE

JESSE and JOSIE walk in kissing.

JESSE

I can’t wait to get changed.

JOSIE

Hayley’s on the job.

JESSE

I can’t let her do it all on her own.

JOSIE

Ah, we can leave it till later, babe.

JESSE

We have a job today.

JOSIE

Yeah, but I need you.

JOSIE and JESSE kiss.

JESSE

I love you.

JOSIE

I’m not running.

JESSE

Good. I can’t take that back.

JOSIE

Who wants to?

JOSIE and JESSE kiss.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

LEAH and DAN are looking at the photos on the mantelpiece.

DAN

It makes us think, huh. You’re grateful.

LEAH

Sad, thoughtful, happy.

DAN

Confused.

LEAH

No, no. Vinnie’s where he is and Jesse’s with Josie, VJ’s happy and Peter’s.

DAN

Asleep in the next room.

LEAH

Em, that, and you’re here.

DAN

Indeed I am.

DAN and LEAH kiss.

LEAH

And I want you to be here. Can you move in? You don’t have to say anything straight away. Think about it. I don’t want to put pressure on you.

DAN

No, you’re not.

LEAH

Yes.

DAN

Definitely, yes.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALF and BETH walk along.

BETH

Well, this is where I peel off.

ALF

Ah, yeah, of course.

BETH

Been quite a day.

ALF

Sure has. Gets you thinking. Gets you think, you know, family.

BETH

What’s important. You’re welcome to join us for dinner.

ALF

No, thanks love, but sometimes it’s best to leave a bloke with his thoughts. Besides Morag will be back from the city shortly. She’s a funny old chook. You can’t pick your family, can you? She’s always there for me.

BETH

Well, if you change your mind.

ALF

Thanks.

BETH walks away.

ALF

Oi, you’re a good woman Beth Sutherland.

BETH

Hunter, Beth Hunter. Thanks.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SALLY, who is holding PIPPA and FLYNN sit on the couch. COLLEEN and LANCE are there.

COLLEEN

There. You’d never know anyone had been here. Take that rubbish out Lancie.

LANCE

Just a tick.

SALLY

You didn’t have to do all this.

COLLEEN

Will you stop saying that. It’s your day and you shouldn’t be working. Ah, you done Lancie.

LANCE

Ah, yeah.

COLLEEN

Good. Well, you can walk me home and I’ll make you tea. Give you two some privacy.

FLYNN

Thank you Colleen and thanks mate.

LANCE

No worries mate.

COLLEEN

Ah, you’ve been here two days and you’re already sounding like Martin Dibble and he’s not even here. We’ll see you two in the morning. Night, night precious.

LANCE

Yeah, see you in the morning, eh.

FLYNN

Thanks again for everything.

SALLY

Yeah, thank you.

COLLEEN

Josie Russell you should be thanking. She can be a strange one sometimes, but what she did in a couple of hours, mmm, miracle worker. Night.

SALLY

Night.

COLLEEN and LANCE walk out.

SALLY

Do you know how lucky we are?

FLYNN

Yeah, we are.

SALLY

I’m glad that we’ve decided to take in Dalby, that’s if he shows up and I don’t think that it should stop there. This house has got a tradition and I think we should follow it.

FLYNN

In time.

SALLY

In time.

FLYNN

New beginnings, huh.

SALLY

Yeah, new beginnings.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER
