Scripts - Episode 3869

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

SALLY and FLYNN walk along, pushing PIPPA in a pram.

SALLY

I hope it stays like this for tomorrow.

FLYNN

That’s what the forecast says.

SALLY

The perfect forecast for the perfect christening.

FLYNN

Yeah. Don’t tempt fate. There’s only one day to go.

SALLY

Oh, what. You think I’ll be struck down for being to smug.

FLYNN

Well, special events around here always appear to go pear shaped don’t they.

SALLY

What could go wrong?

ROBBIE runs up to them.

ROBBIE

Hey guys.

FLYNN

Hey mate.

ROBBIE

Hi.

SALLY

Hi.

ROBBIE

Hey guys, you’ve saved me a phone call. Tash and I might not be able to make it to the christening. Sorry. Sorry, Pippa. Got to go. Ask Josie. Bye.

ROBBIE runs away.

FLYNN

What did you say?

COLLEEN walks up to JOSIE who is sitting at a table.

COLLEEN

Where did young Robbie go?

JOSIE

Aw, something come up.

COLLEEN

Something big I’d say, to make him walk away from pancakes.

JOSIE

It’s nothing for you to worry about.

COLLEEN

I’m a very good listener.

JOSIE

I’m sure you are.

COLLEEN

Right, well I’ll just take these away, shall I?

JOSIE

Please, why don’t you?

SALLY and FLYNN walk up to them.

SALLY

We’ve just had our first drop-out for the christening.

FLYNN

Yeah, Pippa’s come to demand explanation.

COLLEEN

Aw, no pet, who?

SALLY

Robbie and Tasha.

COLLEEN

I knew something was going on.

SALLY

Yeah, Robbie said to ask you.

JOSIE

That will be all, please Colleen.

COLLEEN

Yeah, well there was a time, when an older and wiser head was appreciated. Coffees?

SALLY

Yes.

FLYNN

Thanks Colleen.

THE BEACH HOUSE

ROBBIE and TASHA are at the back door.

ROBBIE

Josie told me what happened. Why didn’t you call?

TASHA

I just had to be on my own.

ROBBIE

I thought it must have been OK when I didn’t hear anything. That bad?

TASHA

Yeah, it was worse. He treated me like I was just some, some thing. I don’t know if I want to see him. I don’t even want to talk about it.

ROBBIE

OK. Well, at least now you know.

TASHA

Yeah, I do.

ROBBIE

Josie said that you were thinking about going up to be with Dylan for a bit.

TASHA

I haven’t seen enough of him.

ROBBIE

And he’s family right.

TASHA

Hmm.

ROBBIE

Josie’s family too.

TASHA

Yeah, she’ll be busy with the opening.

ROBBIE

Don’t you want to be here for her and there’s the christening. Are you sure you don’t mind missing that?

TASHA

I want to go. I do. I just, I just feel too down at the moment.

ROBBIE

OK. Can I come with you to the city? And before you say no, remember how you wanted to help me when Rhys left mum, to be with me. That’s how I feel now. Let me come.

TASHA

I’d really like that actually. Thanks.

ROBBIE

Yeah.

TASHA and ROBBIE cuddle.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

COLLEEN and SALLY walk into the kitchen.

COLLEEN

Dinner.

SALLY

Yeah, seven thirty tonight. Can you come?

COLLEEN

Me? Yeah, of course I’d love to. What’s the occasion?

SALLY

Pippa’s godfather’s arriving. I thought I’d make you the fourth at the table.

COLLEEN

Aw, the mysterious godfather. Of course.

SALLY

You’ll be the first to find out who it is. I hope that makes up for before.

COLLEEN

It’s Donald, isn’t it? Mind you, he is a bit old, but you’ve always been so close. It will be lovely to see him again. I can’t wait to tell Leah. Tomorrows going to be wonderful.

SALLY

I certainly is. I’ll see you tonight.

SALLY walks out.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

LEAH is ironing. DAN walks out the bedrooms.

LEAH

Is he asleep?

DAN

Peter or VJ?

LEAH

I’m not worried about VJ.

DAN

In that case, yeah, Pete’s out like a light. I never thought I’d see the day when my brothers asleep just after seven.

LEAH

Yeah, or the day he just got out of a three month coma.

DAN

Yeah, there is that to.

LEAH

Are you all right? You seem a bit, you know.

DAN

Worried. Em, a bit. Are you sure it’s such a good idea Pete staying here?

LEAH

Well, I’m doing it, aren’t I?

DAN

Flynn said coma patients can be a bit odd periodically.

LEAH

He seems all right so far.

DAN

Yeah. All except for that little fact that him still thinking he’s in love with you.

LEAH

Aw, he’s getting his head around that.

DAN

Is he? You know, I just think he could stay with me, that’s all.

LEAH

There’s hardly room for you at your place.

DAN

Well, OK, he’d could stay there and I’ll stay here and I’ll just check on him. There you go. There’s your solution.

LEAH

Pete needs looking after and I appreciate that you’re concerned, but I think this is the best way to go.

DAN

OK.

LEAH

It is.

DAN

Well, if he starts invading your space or acting strange, let me know. Promise.

LEAH

Promise.

LEAH and DAN kiss. PETER watches them.

THE SURF CLUB

JESSE, JOSIE, TASHA and ROBBIE are there.

JESSE

Cheers.

JOSIE

Cheers.

TASHA

Sorry I’m so down guys.

JOSIE

It’s fine. Besides this is your own private opening. No Paulini, but you can’t have everything.

TASHA

Hey, if you really want to see Paulini, you can. You can come later.

ROBBIE

As if. Mind you, she is cute, but not as cute as you.

JOSIE

That’s better. Now, before we lose that little ray of sunshine, no opening is complete without a speech. So, this is the realisation of a dream. My own business in a town I call home. My beautiful niece, her very handsome guy.

ROBBIE

Oh, thank you.

JOSIE

And throw in my even more handsome man. so, here’s to Noah’s.

JESSE, JOSIE, TASHA & ROBBIE

To Noah’s.

JOSIE

And here’s to the future.

JESSE, JOSIE, TASHA & ROBBIE

To the future.

JOSIE

And here is to us.

JESSE, JOSIE, TASHA & ROBBIE

To us.

ROBBIE

Hey.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

FLYNN walks into the living room. SALLY is in the living room.

SALLY

How’s he going?

FLYNN

He’s up there. He’s by the crib. He’s completely besotted by her.

COLLEEN walks in.

COLLEEN

Yoo-hoo, only me. Aw, look. Sorry I’m a bit early, but I was sitting at home, busting to know, and I thought, for goodness sake, put yourself out of your misery and get over there. It is Donald, isn’t it?

SALLY

Aw, you’ll see when he comes down.

COLLEEN

Aw, so he’s upstairs then.

FLYNN

He’s putting Pippa to sleep.

COLLEEN

I might just pop up and say hello to him. Apple cobbler, forty minutes in a warm oven.

SALLY

Aw, OK.

FLYNN

You sit down. I’ll get you a drink. He’s been wanting to make a grand entrance ever since he arrived.

COLLEEN

Aw, for goodness sake. It’s only Donald. He won’t mind. Well, unless of course it’s not Donald. I was so sure it was, but if it’s not, who could it be?

FLYNN

She’s here. Sit. Sherry.

COLLEEN

Aw, lovely, thank you. Em, you said that Steven and Frank wouldn’t come, so it’s not them. Such a shame that only Pippa could it make it.

SALLY

Yeah. It’s a long way to come just for a christening. I’ll give you a hint. He was my best friend when I was little.

COLLEEN

Your best male friend.

SALLY

Obviously.

COLLEEN

I don’t remember you having any, well except for Milko, and you’re told old to go imagining him.

SALLY

No, no, he’s the real thing. I used to spend hours talking to him on the caravan steps that I don’t know what I would have done without him.

LANCE walks in.

LANCE

G’day mum. Me, a godfather. What do you reckon, eh?

COLLEEN

Lancie, Lancie, oh my little Lancie.

LANCE

Aw, fair go mum, fair go.

SALLY, LANCE, COLLEEN and FLYNN sit at the table.

COLLEEN

Such a shame that Debbie and Maggie couldn’t come, but I do understand air travel isn’t cheap.

LANCE

Yeah, and we had to save the bucks for another ticket, eh.

COLLEEN

Oh. You off on a holiday, are you? Ah, that’s lovely, but you watch where you’re going. No where’s safe these days.

LANCE

Not me that’s travelling mum.

COLLEEN

Lance, you can go sending Maggie and Debbie off on their own. What if their plane got hijinked. No, wherever they go, you’ve got to go to. You’d never forgive yourself if anything happened.

LANCE

They’re not travelling either.

COLLEEN

Oh, I see. Very mysterious. So, who is?

LANCE

You are mum. We’ve been waiting for the right time.

COLLEEN

What’s this?

SALLY

There’s only one way to find out.

LANCE

After the year you’ve had, you know, the cancer and all, we want you up with us for Christmas. See, leaves the twenty second, comes back the twenty eight. What do you say?

COLLEEN starts crying.

COLLEEN

Thank you.

LANCE

Aw, don’t cry mum.

COLLEEN

I’m not. I’m happy. I’m just so happy. Aw, Lancie.

LANCE

Fair go mum.

SALLY laughs.

THE BEACH HOUSE

TASHA and ROBBIE are kissing on the patio.

ROBBIE

Want to get the early bus.

TASHA

Not the really early one. I want to give Pippa a christening kiss.

ROBBIE

I’ll be here at eight then, OK.

TASHA

I love you.

ROBBIE

I love you more.

ROBBIE walks away. TASHA walks in. KIRSTY walks out her room.

KIRSTY

Hey, Tash. We’ve been waiting for you. Have you got a minute.

TASHA

Yeah, of course.

TASHA joins KANE and KIRSTY on their bed.

KANE

Hey. We just wanted to have a chat to you before you leave.

TASHA

I’m not going long.

KANE

It’s a good idea.

KIRSTY

Anyway, there’s just something that we want to say you.

KANE

Yeah, we know that the thing with your dad has really rocked you.

KIRSTY

Yeah, and since we’re the experts on having things rocks us well.

KANE

Well, we just, we thought you’d believe if it came from us. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

KIRSTY

Yeah, you will get through this. You will, and you will be a whole lot better for it. I mean, OK, look at me. I’ve kind of lost my whole family in the space of a year.

KANE

And I’ve lost a testicle. Try topping.

KIRSTY

Oh babe. Anyway, you’ll be fine. Em, we’re here for you.

KANE

Yeah.

KIRSTY

We are. Anyway, that’s sort of it. That’s all we want to say.

TASHA

Thanks guys. I love you so much.

KIRSTY

Aw, we love you too.

KANE

That too. Get out of here before it gets too mushy.

TASHA

OK, then.

KIRSTY

Travel safely yeah.

TASHA walks out.

KIRSTY

Mmm, when did we get so wise?

KANE

Scary isn’t it?

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

DAN and LEAH are lying on the couch.

DAN

I suppose I better be making tracks.

LEAH

Mmm.

DAN

Unless you want me to stay.

LEAH

I’d love you to stay, but not tonight. Pete needs to settle in and I think seeing you at the breakfast table wouldn’t help.

DAN

All right, I know I’m not my prettiest in the morning.

LEAH

He’ll just think that you’re not sure about him.

DAN

Well he’d be right.

LEAH

Come on. Up you get. Come on.

DAN

I’ll come around in the morning.

LEAH

Well not too early.

LEAH and DAN walk into the kitchen.

DAN

Remember, if he starts behaving horribly

LEAH

Then I’ll be straight on the phone.

DAN

OK. Sleep well.

LEAH

I will.

DAN

Bye.

LEAH

Bye.

DAN

Missing you.

LEAH

Missing you too.

DAN walks out. LEAH walks through to the living room. Later that night, PETER looks at photos on the mantelpiece. He looks at one of DAN and LEAH before sitting on the couch. The next morning he is till sitting on the couch. LEAH walks in.

LEAH

You’re up early.

PETER

Yeah, well after three months in a coma being awake is a bit of novelty.

LEAH

Sorry.

PETER

Is Dan here?

LEAH

No.

PETER

Right.

LEAH

Do you want some breakfast?

PETER

Can you sit down a minute. There’s something I really need to say to you. Please. I heard you and Dan talking last night and that’s why I thought he might be here. He seemed really concerned. He thought I might go crazy.

LEAH

No, he didn’t. He was just.

PETER

It’s OK. I understand. If I was in his position I’d feel the same.

LEAH

We want you to get better. We both do.

PETER

I know. I didn’t sleep at all last night. After I heard you go to bed I came out here and just sat, thinking and em, been looking at those. There’s no picture of me up there and that’s because I was never really part of your life, was I? I was just lying to myself about that.

LEAH

Pete.

PETER

I don’t want to lie anymore Leah. If that means not holding back and telling the truth, I have to tell you what I’m feeling. What’s going on in my head? Look, I know you and Dan are together and that there was never really anything between us and I, you know, I except that or the rational, logical part of my brain accepts that, but there’s this other part that just won’t let go. It keeps telling me that we’re in love and it’s not over. No matter who hard I try I can’t get rid of it so that’s it. I mixed up basket case.

LEAH

No, you’re not. It’s going to take time. I know that.

PETER

Knowing is one thing Leah, but,

LEAH

I’m here to help. We both are.

PETER

Is me being here the best way to go about it though? Look, you know I’d never do anything to hurt you, but, you know, sometimes these feelings I have, I’d understand if you asked me to go.

LEAH

No. You need to see Dan and me together. See that our relationship is real and what you’re feeling, I don’t know, some sort of delusion.

PETER

Yeah, but what if I don’t see it. You know, what of these feelings don’t go away. It’s just so weird. I mean, I can sit here telling myself I’m delusional, but I just can’t grasp it emotionally.

LEAH

I’ll leave it up to you. If you feel that you want to go then, but fine. I’m not going to ask you to leave, OK. Is it all right if I tell Dan about what you said?

PETER

Like I said, no more lies. I guess that feels a bit better, I told you.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SALLY and FLYNN are there. SALLY is on the phone.

SALLY

All right, well see you then.

OK, bye.

SALLY puts the phone down.

SALLY

That was Robbie and Tasha. They’re going to pop in and see Pippa before they go.

FLYNN

Houston we have a problem. You better read this.

FLYNN hands SALLY the paper. The headline reads “No Planes Flying”.

THE PALACE

HAYLEY is reading the paper. JESSE walks in.

JESSE

A great nights sleep. Excellent to be here again.

HAYLEY

You’ve got to read this. No planes flying. Baggage handles have walked. Is Paulini coming from interstate?

JESSE

I don’t know.

HAYLEY

Well she could out of town on a gig or something.

JESSE

Right, well I’ll get Josie onto it.

HAYLEY

And what about the guest lists.

JESSE

I don’t know. She’s invited some guy from Melbourne. That’s all I can think off.

HAYLEY

It will be terrible if Paulini can’t make it.

JESSE

Yeah. actually, I better make that call. They’ll be someone far more freaked out by this than we are, you know. Pippa’s meant to be coming down for the christening.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

DAN is sitting at the table. PETER walks in. Sirens can be heard outside.

PETER

Sounds like someone’s in a hurry.

DAN

Yeah, sounds like it.

PETER

Has Leah gone to work?

DAN

She’s left me in charge.

PETER

Things that happen when you take a shower. So, she told you?

DAN

She gave me a potted version. How about some gentle exercise like a walk along the beach?

PETER

Yeah.

DAN and PETER walk out.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

PETER and DAN are walking along.

PETER

And now you know.

DAN

Yeah. Well, thanks for being so honest.

PETER

Well, I spend so much of my work life having to lie that you know, the truth doesn’t come that easily.

DAN

If you really feel that strongly about Leah how can you stand to be in the same house alone with her?

PETER

Well mate, it’s hard.

DAN

But. I guess that means your jealous of me.

PETER

I can’t deny it.

DAN

Are we going to have problem with this down the line?

PETER

Look, I’ll probably act like a rat bag from time to time, but there’s not going to be a problem though. Look, the truth is mate, if Leah’s going to be with someone else, then I’m glad it’s you.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SALLY is on the phone. FLYNN is there.

SALLY

No, no, it’s fine. There’s nothing any of us can do about it.

Yeah, I love you too.

You make sure that you give Ian and Chris from me. I’ll send you the video. It’s better than nothing.

OK.

All right then.

Bye.

SALLY puts the phone down.

SALLY

Crying.

FLYNN

It’s a good thing Lance came early.

SALLY

That’s one consolation. I better ring Sophie too. You were right about tempting fate.

FLYNN

Well look on the bright side. I mean, what’s happened has happened and you just can get on with it.

SALLY

Bad things happen in threes, don’t they?

FLYNN

Well, you’re such a pessimist. We’ll be fine.

SALLY

Thanks.

FLYNN is on the phone.

FLYNN

Right, OK.

Well, I’m not going catastrophise about it. I’ll just take a wait and see line.

Aw, thank you for letting me know.

FLYNN hangs up.

SALLY

Don’t tell me. Bad things come in free.

FLYNN

Doesn’t matter if it’s not related to the christening. That was Bob Evans. He just rang to tell me that they’re going to put a new medical centre into Yabbie Creek.

SALLY

What does that mean for you?

FLYNN

Well, it’s going to have the best of everything apparently.

SALLY

But you’re local.

FLYNN

It’s going to have x-ray, pathology all under one roof and I’m going to lose patients for sure.

SALLY

When does it open?

FLYNN

New year. They’re fast tracking. Aw, well. It doesn’t matter. I’ll just have take some more shifts at the hospital I suppose.

SALLY

You like being a GP. You much prefer that the hospital.

FLYNN

Yeah, well, maybe I won’t keep my practice any longer. We’ll see. Anyway, that’s number two. We just have to wait for number three.

SALLY

When did you become so superstitious. It is going to be fine.

FLYNN

Yeah, I’m just joking.

SALLY

Your surgery.

COLLEEN runs in.

COLLEEN

It’s terrible, just terrible. I ran all the way. I didn’t want you to hear it from just anybody. I heard the sirens and I never dreamt.

FLYNN

Just calm down Colleen.

COLLEEN

I went up to the church to help with the flowers for the christening. An electrical fault they’re saying. You should see it.

LANCE walks in.

LANCE

See what mum?

COLLEEN

Oh, Lancie. You’ve come all this way. The church.

SALLY

What about it?

COLLEEN

Like a blazing inferno it was and now it’s completely burnt, just a blackened shell.

FLYNN

There’s number three.
