SUMMER BAY HIGH

KIRSTY stands at her locker. She drinks a bottle of water. SALLY walks up to her.

SALLY

Kirsty.

KIRSTY

Ah, yeah.

SALLY

I need a word.

KIRSTY

What’s up? Is everything OK? What’s going on?

SALLY and KIRSTY walk into a classroom.

SALLY

Just had a call from Peter Baker. Sarah has escaped from the institution.

KIRSTY

What?

SALLY

He is worried that she could be on her way back here so he just wants everybody that could be a target just to pack some things and meet at the surf club.

KIRSTY

I don’t believe this.

SALLY

No, it’s OK. He’s going to take you somewhere safe until they can track her down.

KIRSTY

OK, what about Kane? He’s out on the Blaxland.

SALLY

Listen, I’m sure Peter will find a way to contact him.

SALLY and KIRSTY walk out the classroom. NOAH is there.

NOAH

Ah.

SALLY

Noah, I need you to walk Kirsty and then to the surf club. Hayley will meet you there.

NOAH

Why? What’s happened?

SALLY

She’ll fill you in on the way. Come on.

KIRSTY, NOAH and SALLY walk out.

THE PALACE

HAYLEY, SCOTT and DANI are there.

HAYLEY

OK, I’ve packed towels too. Is there anything else you think we should grab?

DANI

Hard to say when we don’t know where we’re going.

HAYLEY

Ah, toiletries.

SCOTT

That’s everything.

DANI

Call me crazy Scott, but Paris seems like a better option.

SCOTT

Dan.

DANI

We have the tickets and the plane leaves tomorrow.

SCOTT

We’ve already been through this. I’m not leaving mum.

DANI

But things have changed. You know, the safest place to be is out of the country.

SCOTT

You heard Peter. We’ll be safe where we’re going.

DANI

They haven’t found the gun yet.

SCOTT

I know, but you’ve just got to relax, OK. We are going to be OK.

THE BEACH HOUSE

NOAH and KIRSTY walk in.

KIRSTY

Irene. Irene, are you home?

NOAH finds a letter on the table.

NOAH

Heard from Peter. Even though Tash and I aren’t on Sarah’s radar we decided to go to the city and stay with Dylan for a few days. Call soon. Irene.

KIRSTY

Maybe we should all head to the city.

NOAH

No, come on. Let’s stick to the plan, right.

KIRSTY

I can’t believe this is happening. This is crazy. How the hell did she just escape?

NOAH

We’re going to a safe place. It’s going to be all right.

KIRSTY

You hope.

NOAH

I know.

THE SURF CLUB

JESSE is speaking to two customers.

JESSE

Sorry guys. I know it’s a pain the place having to close so early, but, em, next sessions on us. Fine. See you next time.

The customers walk out. LEAH walks in.

LEAH

What’s going on?

JESSE

How did the vote go?

LEAH

Why are you closing up so early?

ALF walks in.

JESSE

Did I get the lease?

ALF

Have you filled him in yet?

LEAH

No.

JESSE

Will somebody fill me in.

ALF

Well mate, you know, there was a lot of opposition to the idea of a bar and it was always going to be fairly difficult to convince the committee to vote your way which I guess why it’s more of a miracle that you did.

JESSE

Are you serious?

LEAH

Congratulations. The lease is yours.

JESSE

Aw, this is awesome. Thank you so much mate. You have no idea mate how much this means to me.

ALF

I think I’ve got a bit of a clue.

JESSE

Thank you.

ALF

No worries. You worked hard. You deserved it. I’ll catch you later.

JESSE

Thanks again mate.

LEAH

See ya.

ALF walks out.

JESSE

So how did you vote?

LEAH

Well it’s irrelevant now, isn’t it?

JESSE

Well I’d still like to know.

LEAH

Ballots are secret for a reason.

HAYLEY, SCOTT and DANI walk in. HAYLEY is on her phone.

HAYLEY

Yeah, OK, I’ll see you soon. Bye.

LEAH

Are you guys leaving home or something?

SCOTT

Yeah, something like that.

DANI

Is Peter here yet?

LEAH

OK, can someone please tell me what’s going on?

THE BEACH HOUSE

KIRSTY and NOAH are there.

KIRSTY

Em, I think that’s everything. Thanks. I hope the olds aren’t worried about where we are?

NOAH

I called Hayls. Said we wouldn’t be much longer. You all right?

KIRSTY

Yeah, oh, no. I’ve got to get my phone charger. How knows how long I’m going to be there, right?

KIRSTY gets her phone charger. They both leave the house. The gun is taped to the top the cupboard.

THE SURF CLUB

SCOTT and DANI are there.

SCOTT

Hey.

DANI

Hey.

SCOTT

We’re going to be fine.

DANI

No, no. I was just thinking about dad and Beth.

SCOTT

Well I can’t believe he hasn’t even rung you yet.

DANI

I just wish he’d talk to me, you know, so I knew what was going on. It feels like the end of an era.

JESSE and HAYLEY walk into the gym.

JESSE

You know, this is like a whole new era for me Hayls.

HAYLEY

Aw, that’s awesome Jess. Congratulations.

JESSE

Yeah, thanks and thanks for your support with this whole thing to. I really appreciate it. Once the bars open they’ll be plenty of drinks on the house.

HAYLEY

Aw, I like the sound of that.

JESSE

Mmm, just got to find a partner with the bucks to get the place up and running. I don’t suppose you might be interested.

HAYLEY

What? In being a partner in the bar?

JESSE

Why not? I mean, we work perfectly well together.

HAYLEY

Yeah, but you’re talking to the girl who had to borrow to get Noah to Paris.

JESSE

Right. Well someone will turn up.

LEAH walks up to DANI and SCOTT.

LEAH

Hey.

SCOTT

Hey.

DANI

Hey.

LEAH

Hi. Em, we haven’t been able to contact your dad about this place. I hope he won’t be too upset.

DANI

Are you serious? Of course he’ll be upset. I think that it sucks that the votes gone against him.

LEAH

Well some people just thought.

DANI

What? That what happened between my dad and Beth means he doesn’t deserve the lease. So much for this being a business decision.

LEAH

Small towns Dani. You know what it’s like. I was one of the ones who voted for Jesse, but I did it because he’s got a good business plan and not because I’m out to judge your dad.

KIRSTY and NOAH walk in.

KIRSTY

Sorry we took so long guys.

NOAH

Hey. Are you OK?

KIRSTY

Em, Peter’s on the phone. He’s outside.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I wonder where we’re going.

DANI

Probably the Yabbie Creek Motor Inn.

SCOTT

Well as long as there’s a bed to crash in.

DANI

We don’t know how long we’re going to be there, do we?

PETER is looking in the boot of his car. He is on the phone.

PETER

Look, I don’t care. I need road blocks, the houses to be watched and at least ten uniforms and I’ve got five.

Geoff, this is not negotiable, right.

LEAH walks up to PETER.

PETER

I need those uniforms.

Look, the woman’s escaped from custody. It’s already a PR nightmare. Imagine how much worse it’s going to be when she gets here and.

Good. How long will it take?

No, make it an hour.

PETER hangs up.

LEAH

Problem.

PETER

A country police station is always understaffed and under prepared. What’s up?

LEAH

Where are you planning to take everyone?

PETER

Well I’ve got some rooms lined up in Yabbie Creek, but.

LEAH

Well there’s another option. My place.

PETER

Thanks, but we can’t do that.

LEAH

Why not? Sarah doesn’t know who I am or where I live, so everyone will be totally safe and more comfortable.

PETER

Probably so, but I need to take them somewhere controlled.

LEAH

Well is it going to be less controlled at my place and it’s just around the corner. It’s easy for people to get there and it’s easy for them to leave when all this is over.

PETER

I don’t know how long it will be.

LEAH

As long as it takes. It’s fine. Honestly. At least put it to them

PETER

Are you really sure?

LEAH

Absolutely. So is that a yes. Good.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

PETER, DANI, SCOTT, LEAH, HAYLEY, KIRSTY, JESSE  and NOAH all week in.

PETER

It’s only a temporary measure. We caught Sarah quickly the last time we had to gather like this and I’m sure we’ll do again.

LEAH

Ah, just dump stuff here. We’ll sort it out later, OK.

DANI

Peter, it’s happening. How are you going to track her down?

PETER

Well the local police are putting up road blocks and we’ve got a back up team coming in from the city. They should be here in an hour or so. We’re going to stake out all the places Sarah’s most likely to go.

SCOTT

What? Our houses?

HAYLEY

Yeah, and there’s definitely no way she can find out we’re here.

LEAH

No. I’m a complete stranger to her. She couldn’t know.

PETER

There’s no need to stress guys. We’ve got the situation completely under control, all right. Once everyone’s here, we’ll have a thorough briefing, but until then.

JESSE

How’s left to come?

SUMMER BAY HIGH

SALLY and FLYNN are there.

FLYNN

Apparently my name was mentioned at the intervention, plus there was that day at the gym.

SALLY

So, we could be a target too?

FLYNN

Well, Peter says, you know, that we should be all right, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

The door blows open.

SALLY

Flynn, we’re going. I’m not taking any chance with Pippa.

FLYNN

All right.

THE BEACH HOUSE

SARAH is on the patio. She knocks on the door. There is no answer. She throws a plant pot through the window. Later she is crouched on the floor crying. She get the gun out the cupboard and walks away.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BETH is there. COLLEEN walks in.

COLLEEN

Yoo-hoo, only me.

BETH

Aw, Colleen.

COLLEEN

You might want to bring your washing in love. It’s looking pretty nasty out there.

BETH

Aw, thanks for the warning.

COLLEEN

I popped in to see if you’d heard from Rhys yet.

BETH

Eh, no. Why? Is there a problem?

COLLEEN

Poor Maximus is feeling very adrift. I’ve tried cheering him up, but nothing seems to be working. Not even my homemade Lamingtons.

BETH

Ah, I wish he’d talk to me.

COLLEEN

The only person he wants to talk to right now is his uncle. Maxi’s tried calling him, but there’s been no answer. He just wants to know what’s going to happen to him, poor mite.

BETH

Of course he does. I hate the way he feels this isn’t his home anymore.

COLLEEN

Don’t feel bad love. None of this is your fault.

BETH

I’ll give Rhys a call and I’ll get him to do something about it.

COLLEEN

Aw, bless you.

BETH

And thanks for looking after him Colleen.

COLLEEN

Not at all. Anything I can do help, you know that.

BETH

And, and, if you can let him know anytime that he wants to come home and even if it’s just to talk.

COLLEEN

I will.

The kitchen door slams shut.

BETH

Oh.

BETH shuts the door and the windows.

COLLEEN

How are you?

BETH

I’m getting there.

The phone rings.

COLLEEN

Oh, I’ll leave you to answer that and remember anything you need, anything at all.

BETH

Yes Colleen.

COLLEEN walks out. BETH answers the phone.

BETH

Hello, Summer Bay Caravan Park.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

PETER and LEAH are in the kitchen.

PETER

I’ve got Scott getting all the extra bedding from the caravan park all we need to worry about is food.

LEAH

Oh, no. I’ve got plenty of food. If needs be I can go and do a shop in the morning.

PETER

Well hopefully we’ll be out of your way be then.

LEAH

Yeah.

PETER walks through. HAYLEY walks in.

HAYLEY

Are you really sure about all this, especially with VJ.

LEAH

Yes, it’s fine. Honestly. It’s nice to have the company again.

SALLY and FLYNN walk into the living room. SCOTT, DANI, JESSE and NOAH are there.

LEAH

Come in.

SALLY

Hello.

LEAH

Hey.

SCOTT

OK, well I’ll bring one of the guys.

Right, I’ll bring Dani.

See you.

SCOTT hangs up.

DANI

Is there a problem?

PETER

How did you go?

SCOTT

We can take as much as we like.

PETER

Good, let’s go.

SCOTT

Ah, she wants me to take Dani if that’s OK.

DANI

What’s wrong?

SCOTT

Well, she wouldn’t say.

PETER

Well just keep your eyes peeled OK. Make sure no one’s following you.

SCOTT

Sure.

SCOTT and DANI walk out.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SCOTT and DANI walk in.

SCOTT

Mum.

DANI

Hello.

SCOTT

Mum.

BETH walks in.

BETH

Hey, I’ve got some more round the back.

DANI

These are great. Thank you.

SCOTT

And don’t worry. We’re going to be fine at Leah’s.

BETH

That’s what I want to talk to you about. I want you to go to Paris.

DANI

What do you mean?

BETH

I love you to death for wanting to stick around here with me, but I’m going to be fine and you’ve got to think about yourselves and at the moment the further away you are the safer.

SCOTT

Everything is going to be fine. The cops are going to track down Sarah.

BETH

Regardless. You should be going. You’ve got tickets. You’re plane leaves in the morning and it’s silly to lose that money and you’ve got no real reason to stick around here.

SCOTT

We want to be here for you.

BETH

Go to the city, spend the night and get on your plane in the morning.

SCOTT

Mum.

BETH

Scott. Do as your told.

SCOTT

I haven’t heard that for a while.

BETH

Yeah, well I mean it. I mean, you two mean the world to me and it’s going to break my heart to say goodbye to you, but you can’t put your lives on hold because of me. Right, you know, things aren’t too great at the moment, but I’m a big girl. I’m going to get through it. I want you to go to Paris and be happy.

SCOTT

Well, what about Rob and the twins? I mean, I promised them I’d be here.

BETH

Ah, I can handle them.

DANI

It does make sense doesn’t it.

SCOTT

Are you sure you’ll be OK?

BETH

I have never been more sure.

SCOTT

Well, I guess we’re going to Paris.

DANI

Really, thank you, thank you.

DANI and SCOTT cuddle BETH.

BETH

Now, I’ve got some more stuff out the back.

DANI and SCOTT cuddle.

THE PALACE

DANI and SCOTT are in SCOTT’S ute. They draw up outside The Palace.

DANI

I thought the police would be here by now.

SCOTT

Ah, well it’s only been an hour. Are you ready?

DANI

Yep. OK.

DANI and SCOTT run inside.

DANI

Ah, thank god we’re going into summer.

SCOTT

Tell me about it. I’m just going to ring Peter and let him know we’re going to be a bit longer than what we thought.

DANI

I’m just going to get the passports.

SCOTT

I’ll do upstairs and you do down here.

DANI

OK.

SARAH walks up to The Palace. DANI and SCOTT are inside.

DANI

Baby, can you help me. I can’t shut my suitcase.

SCOTT

Maybe, you’ve packed too much.

DANI

I need it.

SCOTT

Your entire wardrobe.

DANI

Can you help me please?

SCOTT

All right, you need to push down.

DANI

I have been.

SCOTT

Yeah.

SARAH walks in.

DANI

You got it. OK, cool.

SCOTT

Let’s go.

DANI

Is that everything?

SCOTT

I think so. Have you got the passports?

DANI

In the kitchen.

SCOTT

All right, let’s do it.

DANI

I can’t believe the police aren’t here by now.

SCOTT

Talk about timing.

The police walk up to the Palace. CONSTABLE JONES is at the door.

SCOTT

G’day. Scott Hunter.

CONSTABLE JONES

Mike Jones. I was expecting the place to be empty.

SCOTT

Yeah, well my girlfriend, Dani and I had to drop back and pick up some stuff. We’re on the way to the safe house.

DANI

Hey.

CONSTABLE JONES

Evening. You two have a fair bit of stuff there.

SCOTT

Yeah, we’re going to the city for the night and then off to Paris first thing in the morning.

CONSTABLE JONES

Do you want me to give you a hand with that?

DANI

Ah, thank you. Ready.

SCOTT

Ready.

SARAH walks out the shower. The passports have been left on the table.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

SALLY, HAYLEY and LEAH are in the kitchen.

LEAH

It’s bucketing down out there.

FLYNN walks in.

FLYNN

You guys need a hand.

LEAH

Oh, yes. Can you take this out please and grab the garlic bread.

SALLY and FLYNN walk out. PETER is on the phone.

PETER

And Irene Roberts place.

OK.

Everything’s covered.

Right, good.

PETER hangs up.

LEAH

Miserable night out there.

PETER

Oh, well. It’s all part of the fun. Do you want a hand with taking anything else through?

LEAH

Ah, no. Just go and grab yourself something to eat while it’s hot.

PETER

Ta.

PETER smiles at LEAH.

LEAH

What?

PETER

Nothing.

LEAH

No, what?

PETER

It’s just you’re a good person, doing this for everyone. Not a lot of people would.

LEAH

Thanks. It’s nice of you to say. Why do I always get the feeling you’re on the verge of saying something, but you really never get there?

PETER

What do you mean?

LEAH

That look.

SCOTT and DANI walk in.

PETER

You took your time.

SCOTT

Yeah. Bedding.

LEAH

Come inside. Warm yourselves up.

They walk into the living room with the bedding. SALLY, FLYNN, JESSE, HAYLEY, NOAH and KIRSTY are there.

DANI

Guys, em, we have some, em, very exciting news.

HAYLEY

What?

DANI

We’re going to Paris.

SCOTT

Tomorrow.

HAYLEY

What? You’re kidding.

KIRSTY

Aw, my god. Congratulations.

SCOTT, DANI, HAYLEY and NOAH walk outside.

DANI

Aw, here we go.

HAYLEY

Don’t drink to much champagne ob the flight, OK. Au revoir.

PETER walks out.

PETER

Guys. Inside. We don’t want Sarah knowing we’re here, remember.

HAYLEY

Sorry, bye.

SCOTT

Are you ready?

DANI

Yeah, I think so.

SCOTT and DANI run to the car.

DANI

Aw, it’s so wet. Ah.

DANI and SCOTT get in the car.

DANI

We’re doing the right thing, aren’t we?

SCOTT

Don’t go cold feet on me now.

DANI

I just want you to be happy, OK.

SCOTT

I’m happy.

DANI

Good.

SCOTT

Right.

DANI

Yes.

SCOTT

So have we got everything?

DANI

I think so.

SCOTT

Tickets?

DANI

Yep.

SCOTT

Money?

DANI

Yep.

SCOTT

Passports?

DANI

No, no, no, no, no. Hang on.

SCOTT

I thought you picked them up.

DANI

I thought I picked them up, but they’re not here.

SCOTT

Come on. Don’t worry about it. We’ll just get them on the way, yeah.

DANI

I’m sorry, OK.

SCOTT

Let’s go. Come on.

THE PALACE

SARAH sits in the palace. There is thunder and lightening.  DANI and SCOTT run in.

DANI

Scott, they’re not here.

SCOTT

Well are you sure you brought them downstairs.

DANI

Yeah, I put them on the table.

SCOTT

Well, maybe you left them in the lounge.

DANI

No, they’re not here.

SARAH

Are you guys looking for these?
