THE MARRIAGE COUNSELLORS

BETH, JODIE and RHYS are there.

RHYS

I don’t know where to start, so I’m just going to say it. I’ve been living a lie and you, the kids, everyone around me. They deserve much better. I’ve tried to do it because I love you and I would give anything in the world not to hurt you, but I know I’m going to. The lie isn’t anything I’ve said. I mean, when I tell you that I, I know I can be and I want to be a good husband and a good father to all our kids, that’s the truth and if I tell you Beth that I love you, that’s the truth to, but I haven’t been telling you, I love Shelley more and as much as I want to be here for you everyday. I’d drive out of that drive way  and I just don’t know which way I’m going to go. If I’m going to head off to the kiosk like I always do or whether I’m just going to keep heading out of Summer Bay and keep driving until with her. I’m really sorry I had to say that. I can’t live this lie anymore.

JODIE

Thanks for being so honest Rhys. Beth, would you like to respond.

THE PALACE

NOAH, HAYLEY and SCOTT are in the living room. DANI walks in. She is on the phone.

DANI

Hey guys. You’ve got to hear this. Come on.

HAYLEY

What?

DANI

Sorry, sorry.

SCOTT

What? What? What?

SCOTT, NOAH and HAYLEY run into the kitchen.

DANI

Sorry, so what else.

NOAH

What’s happening?

SCOTT

Well she’s either having a really obscene phone call.

DANI

Shhh.

And when did you find out?

SCOTT

Or she’s won the lotto.

DANI

And that can’t be reversed at all.

SCOTT

I think it’s the first.

NOAH

Obscene phone call.

DANI

That’s totally made my day. OK, thank you so much.

Thank you, I tell them. OK. Bye.

DANI hangs up.

DANI

You will never guess what.

HAYLEY

Tell me it’s a million bucks.

DANI

That was Peter Baker. Sarah is not getting out.

SCOTT

You’re kidding.

HAYLEY

For real.

DANI

No, that psyches are convinced she’s suffering from extreme psychosis.

NOAH

They’re quick off the mark.

SCOTT

Yeah, way to go.

DANI

And get this, apparently she was caught talking to Felix when she felt no one was looking.

NOAH

What’s so off the wall about talking to dead people?

HAYLEY

Yeah, I talk to one all the time and ask you to leave the toilet seat down.

SCOTT

So, she’s not getting out, ever?

DANI

She’s been committed indefinitely.

SCOTT

Yes.

HAYLEY

So, is it too early for a party.

DANI

We should open that champagne Hayls.

HAYLEY

Yes. It’s behind last nights leftovers.

DANI

Ah, got it.

SCOTT

So, what else did he say?

DANI

He said that after all the talking and assessments the shrinks agreed to pronounce her sane and risk her getting bail and they can’t do that when they haven’t found the gun.

SCOTT

How thoughtful.

NOAH

Or don’t like the idea of, you know, getting their buts sued, you know, if she ever got out and knocked one of us off.

HAYLEY

Go, girl. One, two, three.

DANI pops the champagne.

THE MARRIAGE COUNSELLORS

BETH, RHYS and JODIE are there.

BETH

I guess I should be thankful that you only lied for as long as you did. Jack lied to me for years and the kids. You were right about us deserving better. I was a second class wife for a long time and I won’t be one again, so, if you don’t love me enough Rhys, then we don’t have a marriage, so I need you to keep being honest. Is there a hope? Any hope of what you feel changing?

RHYS

I don’t think so.

BETH

Well, that pretty much says it all then.

JODIE

Well lets not close any doors before.

BETH

Aw, sorry Jodie, but that’s a no if I ever heard it and I’m not going to be a victim here so you can turn yourself into a martyr Rhys and lock yourself into a relationship for all the noble reasons you just stated. I would, will, do anything to continue being your wife, but I won’t be a jailer.

THE SURF CLUB

ALF and JESSE are there.

ALF

Have you seen Rhys around this morning?

JESSE

Aw, he’s probably sulking about last night.

ALF

I wouldn’t be too cocky if I was you. We might be seeing the same thing about you if the committee knock back your lease application.

JESSE

It will be close, but I don’t think they will.

ALF

Have you been doing some canvassing?

JESSE

Yes, and now it’s your turn mate. Are you going to vote for a progressive future and let me turn this play here into the Gym and Tonic, the social Mecca of Summer Bay?

ALF

I wouldn’t have a clue mate, but let’s find out, eh. Heads I support you, tails I don’t.

JESSE

You beauty.

ALF

Is that the vote you needed to put you in front in the numbers?

JESSE

No, even Steven now.

ALF

How many more of the committee have you got to talk to?

JESSE

Just the one. I’ve been saving the scariest till last.

A PARK

LEAH and JESSE are walking along.

LEAH

I am not telling you that.

JESSE

Why not?

LEAH

Because it’s a ballot. It’s meant to be secret.

JESSE

I’m going to find out anyway.

LEAH

Only the result. Not how voted which way.

JESSE

OK, give me a clue.

LEAH

Aw, no.

JESSE

Wouldn’t you like to go out at the evening, have a drink without having to go all the way to Yabbie Creek.

LEAH

Aw, trust me. Any single mum with a full time job. You never get the chance to go out for a drink or travel way further than Yabbie Creek to do it.

JESSE

Well vote for me and think of the money you’ll save on cab fares.

LEAH

Yeah, you and Rhys are not the only two options. There’s still time for other people to put in proposals.

JESSE

Come on Leah. You are the deciding vote. It’s not that hard a question. Sorry, I don’t mean to be hassling you, but, this is a really huge opportunity for me, OK.

LEAH

OK, you shouldn’t be hassling.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

LEAH and IRENE are in the kitchen.

IRENE

Ah, I bet that wiped smile off his ugly mush.

LEAH

Well, I didn’t wait to see. It was more cool walking away and not looking back.

IRENE

Well serves him right for being so pushy.

LEAH

Yeah.

IRENE

So, which way are you going to jump darl?

LEAH

Well, I don’t know actually. You know, I’m thinking I should vote against it, but if I do that he’s going to think I’m punishing him for what happened between us.

The phone rings.

IRENE

Yeah, well of course, no woman ever made a decision that wasn’t all about a man.

IRENE answers the phone.

IRENE

Hello diner. Irene speaking.

Aw, good day love.

Aw, my god. Dylan. I’ll write it down. I can’t believe it. Come on. OK, fire away.

Yeah.

That’s fantastic.

OK, well look. I’m going to nip down this afternoon. I’ve got it off.

Yeah, well, the sooner the better. You know, I want to get to the bottom of this.

OK, yeah, I’ll get back to you as soon as I find out anything.

Thanks. Bye

IRENE hangs up.

IRENE

We have lift off on the Angie look alike.

LEAH

Wahl, it’s weird to think there’s another one out there.

IRENE

It’s even weirder to think she’s only two hours drive away.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS and BETH walk in.

RHYS

Don’t make one for me. I better start packing.

BETH

Now.

RHYS

You said everything. It’s over.

BETH

This is your home.

RHYS

Your too. I’m not going to ask you and the kids to move out.

RHYS walks out the room.

THE BEACH HOUSE

KANE, KIRSTY and IRENE are there.

KANE

I can’t believe it has taken them this long to figure out what everyone had sussed from day one.

IRENE

Well the likes of Sarah can be pretty cunning love.

KANE

Well I had her picked in two seconds flat.

KIRSTY

And you’ve been a psychiatrist for how long now?

KANE

Babe, living with you. I don’t think it would take much to pass the exam.

KIRSTY

Aw, nice.

IRENE

I just hope we’re not swapping one nutter for another. I had a call at work today from Dylan. Apparently his gran had one of her good night last night and was able to tell him where Angie’s cousin works.

KIRSTY

Where?

IRENE

Well, it’s down in the city somewhere. The old love was able to tell him the address, but she couldn’t remember the name of the company so I’m nicking down after lunch to check out the joint.

KANE

Well, are you just going to turn up?

IRENE

Well, it’s one way of finding out if she’s as crazy as her cousin and if she doesn’t know I’m coming, I get to see the real her.

KIRSTY

But if she is as crazy as Angie?

IRENE

I’ll be running a million miles in the other direction.

KANE

Are you going to tell Tash?

IRENE

Not if this woman turns out to be a worry so please don’t say anything till I get back love. The last thing we need around here is more tears.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BETH sits at the table. RHYS walks in with his suitcase.

RHYS

I couldn’t find my calculator.

BETH

Oh, I borrowed it. Sorry. I’ll give you it back.

RHYS

It’s OK.

BETH

Have you decided what you’re going to do? Where you’re going?

RHYS

Not completely.

BETH

Rhys, for god sake. Just give me some straight answers. Are you going to Shelley’s?

RHYS

I don’t know. You said the marriage was over and you’re not prepared.

BETH

Don’t throw this back on me.

RHYS

No, I’m not. I am just facing the facts that you said you’re not prepared to be my jailer and I can understand that. I can. This is no one’s fault, but mine. You should figure out we’re going to tell the kids. Now I was just thinking I could go around now and tell Dani and Kirsty, and em, maybe you can tell the others when they get home.

BETH

Max too?

RHYS

I just think it’s better if I’m not here by the time they get back. He might want to stay at Dani’s for a few nights if that’s OK with you.

BETH

If that he wants?

RHYS

Poor kid. He’s been so messed around. Ah, the kiosk. That can stay shut for a couple of days while I get my head together.

BETH

I don’t understand any of this. We were so happy just a few weeks ago. How did we get to this?

RHYS

And I’m going to get a hotmail address just in case you need to e-mail me.

BETH

Don’t. This is our last chance. All I need is for you to look at me and tell me that you don’t need to go to her and that you can stay and I’m not talking about staying for responsibilities or vows or kids. For us. For you, me. Tell me that this can be your home again and not a prison.

RHYS

You don’t know how much I wish I could.

BETH

Well if you’ve got to wish for it then now is the time to go. We’ll both end up hating each other.

RHYS

I don’t hate you Beth.

BETH

Aw, you did last night. The moment I saw it in your eyes. If you stay then those moments will eventually take over and in thirty years time we’ll both be so bitter we won’t be able to stand the sight of each other.

RHYS

I’ll ring in a few days when I’m sorted.

BETH

Drive carefully.

RHYS

I will.

BETH

I love you so much.

RHYS

I love you too.

RHYS and BETH cuddle. RHYS then walks out the house.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE is there. RHYS walks in.

IRENE

Kirsty, your dads here to see you love. I’d stay and have a cuppa with you darling, but I’ve got to nip down to the city. How are you and Beth after last night? It must have been such a disappointment.

RHYS

I haven’t got time for a cup of tea either.

IRENE

Right, well maybe another time love.

KIRSTY and KANE walk out their bedroom.

IRENE

Ah, wish me luck guys.

KIRSTY

Good luck.

IRENE

See you later.

KANE

See you.

KIRSTY

Hi.

RHYS

Hi. I’d like to speak to my daughter.

KANE

Look, if this is about last.

RHYS

I am not asking for your permission. Just do us the courtesy of giving us some privacy or else I will not be held responsible.

KANE walks away.

RHYS

I’ve moved out. I am leaving Summer Bay. Not forever, but for a while. I will probably be staying with your mum. I wanted to tell you face to face and I want to say a couple of other things beside. Look, first off, I am not asking for your approval or your forgiveness. I’m not asking you to choose sides, but if there is any way you can see to help Beth get through this I would be really grateful if you did and the other thing I need you to know is, em, Shelley, your mum and I. We love you so much no matter.

KIRSTY starts crying.

RHYS

Kane, I think your wife needs you.

KANE walks through.

RHYS

Hey, I’ve got to get going. I’ve got to see Dani before I leave.

KANE

What’s the story?

RHYS

I’m going away for a while.

KIRSTY

He’s moved out.

KANE

And you got me to shake your hand on a promise that you would never hurt Beth.

RHYS

Hey, bye sweetheart.

KIRSTY

Bye dad.

RHYS walks out. KIRSTY starts crying again. She cuddles KANE.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SCOTT and BETH are cuddling. BETH is crying.

BETH

Aw, first your father. Now Rhys. Oh, I’m really good at this, am not I?

SCOTT

You are loved by all of us.

BETH

I know sweetheart.

SCOTT

It’s not enough, huh.

BETH

Probably, but not now. I don’t know how much more I can take. Yeah, but I’ve been down this road before and I’ll get to the end again.

SCOTT

Well you’re not going to be doing it alone. You know that, don’t you.

BETH

Thank you. Right now, I’m going to make myself a sandwich. How about you?

SCOTT

Mum.

BETH

Oh, it helps.

THE PALACE

DANI and RHYS sit at the table.

DANI

How are you going?

RHYS

How am I going?

DANI

Dad, ever since you walked in the door, you talked about everyone else, but you. You told me to look after Beth, to look after Max. How are you?

RHYS

I think I’m going to start talking about me and my blues, and I don’t want to do that in front of my daughter.

DANI

Dad, your daughter is the one person you can do that in front of.

RHYS

Look, I’m fine, really.

DANI

Dad, it’s me. I know you better than that. This is going to tear you apart, isn’t it? If it hasn’t already.

RHYS starts crying.

RHYS

I’m sorry Dan. I’m so sorry.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SCOTT and BETH walk out.

SCOTT

Are you sure you’re going to be OK?

BETH

I’ll be fine. Now, off you go. I’ve got a mountain of housework to do.

SCOTT

I love you.

BETH

I love you to.

SCOTT

Call me if something happens.

BETH

I will.

SCOTT

You promise.

BETH

I promise, now go. Good bye.

SCOTT walks away. BETH walks back into the house.

THE SURF CLUB

RHYS puts up a sign saying “Kiosk closed till further notice”. JESSE watches him.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BETH does the hovering, then cleans the door and does the dishes.

THE PALACE

DANI is there. KIRSTY knocks on the door. They cuddle.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BETH sits on a chair.

A ROAD

RYHS is driving along in the car. He passes a sign which says “You are leaving Summer Bay. Come Back Soon”.

THE CITY

IRENE gets out of car. She dials a number on her mobile phone.

IRENE

Dylan.

Hi, it’s me. Tell me again the address your Nan gave you.

I don’t suppose you could get down here and join me, could ya?

Well, because darl, I am standing outside the joint and if this is where Angie’s cousin works we have got one big problem.
