THE WHARF

DANI sits at the end of the wharf. The waves crash against the beach.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS is on the phone. He puts it down and walks into the kitchen where BETH is.

THE BEACH

ALF does some fishing. NOAH runs up to him.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BETH drops her cup on the floor. It smashes. RHYS comforts her.

THE PALACE

HAYLEY cries. NOAH hugs her.

THE BEACH HOUSE

TASHA opens the door. ROBBIE walks in and starts crying on her shoulder.

A ROAD

KIT drives along crying.

THE WHARF

DANI sits at the end of the wharf. She turns around and sees SCOTT walking towards her. She closes her eyes, opens them again and sees HAYLEY walking towards her.

HAYLEY

If you want to be alone?

DANI

No, it’s OK. This is where it was all going to begin, you know. Our life together. Scott was going to build his yacht, I was going to finish Uni and we were going to sail away. Nothing special. Just the two of us. It was his dream and. It’s OK. It’s OK. It’s OK.

HAYLEY and DANI hug.

THE PALACE

NOAH, RHYS and BETH are there.

RHYS

BETH

NOAH

Do you want me to call anybody? Maybe Kit.

RHYS

No, she’s already on her way, but thanks.

BETH

Can I borrow your phone book?

NOAH

RHYS

Ah, Beth, I can make the calls.

RHYS and BETH walk into the kitchen.

BETH

I just need to make, start jotting a few things down and make some arrangements.

RHYS

We have to do it sooner or later.

RHYS

There’s plenty of time for that. You just need a bit of time.

BETH

I just don’t want to leave things till the last minute.

RHYS

We’re not going to leave it to the last minute.

BETH

Rhys, will you just give me some space. This has to be done and I don’t want to put off the funeral arrangements.

DANI walks in.

RHYS

Sweetheart.

BETH

Because. Oh, Dan, I’m so sorry.

BETH and DANI hug. HAYLEY walks in.

THE BEACH HOUSE

ROBBIE and TASHA are there.

ROBBIE

I shouldn’t have said.

TASHA

He knew you didn’t mean it Robbie.

ROBBIE

TASHA

Of course he did. Scott knew how much you loved him.

ROBBIE

But I still said it. I still told my brother I hated him and I can never take those words back, not now.

KANE and IRENE sit outside on the patio.

KANE

It’s like a dream, isn’t it? It doesn’t seem real.

IRENE

No, love. It doesn’t.

KANE

I wonder how Dani’s doing? Beth?

IRENE

Not much better I’d say. It’s going to be a long time before anyone gets past this.

KANE

I should have been out there with him. Maybe if we were both there.

IRENE

Love, you couldn’t have stopped this.

KANE

I know it was a really bad storm, but if we were both on the boat.

IRENE

Kane, please. Stop it. Do you hear me? This is no one’s fault love. This is just a terrible tragic accident.

KANE

Should I wake Kirst? She’d want to know.

IRENE

THE PALACE

NOAH and HAYLEY hug. KIT and RHYS walk in.

RHYS

Robbie’s with Tasha and Max and the twins are at home with Colleen.

KIT and RHYS walk into the living room where BETH is. They hug.

BETH

Do they know?

RHYS

Not yet.

BETH

I didn’t want them to see me. I just.

KIT

BETH

I needed some time.

KIT

DANI walks down the stairs. KIT and DANI hug.

KIT walks out.

COLLEEN sits on the couch. MAX walks in.

COLLEEN

MAX

What are you doing here and where’s everyone else?

COLLEEN

Oh, em, your Uncle Rhys and your Auntie Beth will be home soon. Now, how about I fix you up some breakfast?

MAX

Where did they go

COLLEEN

Oh, well they just had to pop out for a bit pet. What do you feel like? I can boil you an egg.

MAX

COLLEEN

KIT walks in.

KIT

KIRSTY and KANE are in their bedroom.

I need to be with Dani.

She’s got a lot of people around there.

MAX and COLLEEN are there.

COLLEEN

It’s alright to cry, you know Maxi.

MAX

Yeah, I probably will, but later. I’ve got to be brave for Auntie Beth and everyone else, like when they helped me when Eloise died.

BETH and RHYS walk in.

MAX

COLLEEN

I expect you don’t have much of an appetite at the moment, but there’s some breakfast there if you want it.

RHYS walks into the kitchen.

COLLEEN

If it’s any consolation, drowning is a peaceful way to die or so I’ve heard.

BETH walks out the room. KIT walks over to COLLEEN.

KIT

How about dying from the foot you’ve got in your mouth shoved down your throat? How peaceful do you think that would be?

COLLEEN

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset anybody.

KIT

KIT walks away.

COLLEEN

I really am very sorry.

COLLEEN runs out the house. MAX sighs.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

IRENE and ALF are there.

ALF

I knew there was a storm, but the forecast wasn’t that bad and he’s such a strong swimmer.

IRENE

Alf, there is no point in trying to second guess it. It’s not going to bring him back.

ALF

No, I guess things aren’t supposed to make sense at times like this.

IRENE

ALF

IRENE brings a teapot across.

ALF

Why I wasn’t out there with him?

IRENE

COLLEEN walks in.

IRENE

COLLEEN

DANI, NOAH and HAYLEY are there.

DANI

What if the police got it wrong? What if it’s not Scott’s body they’ve found?

NOAH

DANI

But if you think about, right, it could be anyone until we ID the body. I think we should be out looking. I want to go out.

HAYLEY

Dan, Noah.

DANI stands up.

DANI

Hayley, if he’s out there.

HAYLEY

He’s not Dani. I know it’s hard, but he’s gone.

DANI

It’s just, I can’t feel it. I know, I think if he was gone I’d feel it.

NOAH

Dani,, why don’t you just have a seat? I’ll call Flynn.

DANI

I don’t need a doctor.

KIRSTY and KANE walk in.

KIRSTY

DANI

It might not be Scott.

Yeah, I think the police have made a mistake. I think that, you know, it happens all the time right. Em, any minute, he’s going to walk straight through the door, right there and everything’s going to be fine. It is. Everything’s going to be OK.

DANI walks out. NOAH shakes his head.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

KIT and MAX are in the kitchen. ROBBIE and TASHA walk in.

ROBBIE

Where’s mum?

KIT

Upstairs with the twins. Rhys too.

MAX

I tried cheering them up, but, you know, they wouldn’t stop crying.

ROBBIE

I know what will cheer us up.

ROBBIE picks a bottle out of the cupboard.

ROBBIE

Hey, Kit. Let’s get smashed.

KIT

Rob.

ROBBIE

No, it’s perfect. What better way to feel better. Hey, here.

KIT

TASHA

Robbie, don’t.

ROBBIE

KIT

ROBBIE

RHYS walks in.

ROBBIE

ROBBIE and KIT start fighting over the bottle.

RHYS

What is going on here?

KIT

Robbie.

KIT manages to grab the bottle of ROBBIE.

ROBBIE

Get stuffed, alright.

BETH walks in.

ROBBIE

You give it back to me. You have no idea how I feel.

ROBBIE tries to grab the bottle back of KIT.

KIT

I know exactly how you feel.

RHYS

Let’s just try and calm down, OK.

RHYS splits ROBBIE and KIT apart.

ROBBIE

You are spiteful.

KIT

Robbie, just listen to me. This stuff is not going to make you feel any better.

ROBBIE

Well it can’t make me feel any worse.

BETH walks out the living room.

KIT

Yes it can, believe me. It might stop you feeling the pain for a little while, but it’s always going to be there. This is not the way.

ROBBIE walks out the room.

TASHA

I’ll go.

TASHA follows ROBBIE.

KIT

I handled that really well.

KIT walks into the kitchen.

RHYS

I don’t think there’s much you could have said at the moment Kit?

MAX

Eh, where’s Auntie Beth?

RHYS and MAX look around the room.

THE WHARF

BETH walks along the wharf crying. RHYS follows her.

RHYS

RHYS begins to run towards her. BETH starts running.

BETH

RHYS manages to catch up with BETH.

BETH

BETH collapses to her knees.

BETH

RHYS comforts BETH.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

COLLEEN is there. MAX walks in.

COLLEEN

Aw, Maximus, what are you doing here?

MAX

Everything back at the house is a bit crazy. I just wanted to see if you were OK.

COLLEEN

Aw, I hope they don’t hate me too much. I didn’t mean to upset anybody.

MAX

No one hates you Colleen. Everyone’s just sad.

COLLEEN

Why do I keep doing it Maxi? Why do I always say the wrong thing?

MAX

I don’t know. Maybe it’s because you’re really old.

COLLEEN

IRENE and ALF are in the kitchen.

ALF

I’ll give Rhys a ring shortly and let him know I’m around if he needs anything.

IRENE

It’s just that there’s stuff that needs to be done and well, Dani and Beth shouldn’t need to go through that. I just want to let him know I’m happy to do any of that sort of stuff.

ALF walks upstairs.

KIRSTY is there. DANI walks in.

DANI

KIRSTY

What the test will find. Will Kane hate me if I’ve hurt this baby? I was, I just stopped. I know it was really, really stupid. I thought it was the right thing to do and.

DANI starts crying.

DANI

He’s not coming back, is he?

KIRSTY and DANI hug. DANI continues to cry.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

KIT takes some plates out before looking at the bottle of alcohol. She walks into the cupboard. ROBBIE and TASHA walk into the kitchen.

ROBBIE

Hey.

KIT

Hi.

KIT walks out the kitchen and continues unloading the dishwasher.

ROBBIE

I’m sorry about before. I was out of line.

KIT

Don’t worry about it.

ROBBIE

No, I shouldn’t have said it. It wasn’t fair on you. Henry and Matty still up stairs?

KIT

Yep.

ROBBIE

I’ll go up. Coming?

ROBBIE and TASHA walk upstairs. KIT finishes taking the dishes out of the dishwasher before going back into the cupboard and picking up the bottle of alcohol. RHYS walks into the kitchen.

RHYS

Are you sure that’s what you want? It’s a long way back from your first drink.

KIT

I could tell you that I wasn’t going to drink it, but I would be lying. He would have hated me if I had done this.

KIT starts crying.

KIT

My brother’s dead.

RHYS comforts KIT.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

IRENE and ALF are there.

IRENE

Look love, if there’s anything you need, anything at all, just let me know.

ALF

Yeah, thanks Irene and thanks for this morning too, eh.

IRENE

It’s OK love. It’s the least I can do.

IRENE walks out the diner. ALF walks into the kitchen. COLLEEN glares at him and walks out. The phone rings. ALF answers it.

ALF

Beachside Diner.

Yes, speaking.

What?

THE PALACE

HAYLEY and NOAH are there. DANI walks in.

NOAH

Your dad called. He said he’ll pick you up on the way through.

HAYLEY

You don’t have to do this, you know.

DANI

Yeah, I do Hayls. I need to see him.

HAYLEY

Do you want me to come with you?

DANI

HAYLEY

Well, I don’t mind.

DANI

Hayls, it’s fine. When my dad gets here can you tell him to pick me up at the dock.

NOAH

Yeah, of course.

THE WHARF

DANI walks towards the wharf. She sees SCOTT walking along. She runs towards him.

DANI

Oh my god, I can’t believe this.

DANI and SCOTT hug.

SCOTT

You’ve come to surprise me, have you?

DANI
