Scripts - Episode 3613

THE PALACE

ALEX is showing AMBER some tactics on the table.

ALEX

So, what I want is for the wingers to remain wide, OK. So, once you drawn your man here.

AMBER

Woman.

ALEX

Woman, whatever. You’ve got more space for the.

HAYLEY walks in.

HAYLEY

Amber, you don’t mind dropping this off at Alf’s, do you?

AMBER

No, anything to help the party.

ALEX

Look at me. Look. We’re not going to have anything to celebrate unless we win and to do that you’ve got to listen to me, OK.

HAYLEY

Alex. Haven’t you heard soccer is meant to be about having fun.

ALEX

Ah, whatever.

AMBER

You two, why don’t you just give it a rest?

NOAH walks in.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well I’m fine if Alex is fine.

AMBER

Glad you could join the party.

NOAH

Ah, party is the last thing I feel like. Josh is going to tell the board that I can’t complete my course so it looks like I’m going to be out of the job.

HAYLEY

You can’t let them get away with it.

NOAH

What can I do? I mean, they won’t let me repeat and without that unit they won’t let me graduate.

AMBER

Hang on. The Uni has to let you plead your case. It says so in the regulations, so appeal.

NOAH

I mean, what’s the point? They’ve already made up their mind.

AMBER

Yeah, except if there’s this hearing  then you’ll get to be face to face with the chief and if they ask you hard questions they’re going to see you’re the one telling the truth Noah.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

AMBER, NOAH and ALF walk into the kitchen.

NOAH

Well, thanks for letting us put the party in here tomorrow Mr. Stewart.

ALF

No worries love, but you two better get your lips working if you’re going to get all those balloons blown up before midnight.

NOAH

Sorry I can’t hang around. I’ve got my own opponent to meet at Uni.

ALF

What? They let you back in.

NOAH

Kind of, but a chance to state my case.

ALF

Well lets hope there is victory party for you to, eh.

AMBER

There will be.

AMBER and NOAH cuddle. KIT, standing at the counter, sees them. COLLEEN walks up to her.

COLLEEN

Aw, morning. Shouldn’t you be at school?

KIT

Study break. Tasha’s a bit scared about going back to school so I thought I’d get her a treat.

COLLEEN

Aw, that’s a nice thing to do and I know just the thing. One of Leah’s cookies.

NOAH and AMBER walk out the kitchen. COLLEEN walk into the kitchen.

NOAH

I’m sorry I’ll miss the big game.

AMBER

That’s all right, just as long as we come out after the match celebrating.

NOAH and AMBER walk out the diner. JOSH is sitting at a table on his laptop. He walks up to KIT.

JOSH

Hi.

KIT

Hello.

JOSH

Are you OK? Want to grab a coffee. Need someone to talk to.

THE PALACE

ALEX and HAYLEY are in the kitchen.

HAYLEY

Do you think we’ve got a chance tomorrow?

ALEX

For sure, if you guys focus, but that’s your weakness.

HAYLEY

Alex, I’ll my best and that’s all I can do.

ALEX

I’m sorry. I know I’ve been tough.

HAYLEY

It’s not just that. Ever since you got back it’s like all you care about is winning and soccer. What happened to everything else, to?

ALEX

Baby, you know how much I care about you, right. This stupid knee. I feel like an invalid you know. I just want to get out and play again.

HAYLEY

Well, maybe you should call the club when you feel better.

ALEX

It’s not as simple as that.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well if they want you they’ll give you the time you need.

ALEX

All right. I’ll call them now.

ALEX picks up the phone. HAYLEY walks out the room.

ALEX

Aw, hi, Mr. Benedicts.

Hi, Alex Poulos here. How are you?

Yeah, yeah, good thanks. Em, it’s just about my knee.

Nothing.

No, no, no, it’s fine and I’m working on it and it’s all under control.

Yeah, I’ll be at training, for sure. I just wanted to let you know, that’s all.

Yeah, see you too.

Thanks.

ALEX puts the phone down.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

KIT and JOSH sit at a table.

JOSH

Thanks.

KIT

I didn’t order that.

JOSH

Well I thought it might cheer you up.

KIT

All right Josh. Very impressive. So why are you being so nice to me?

JOSH

Well, you look like you could do with someone to talk to. Does there have to be an agenda?

KIT

Yeah, considering the last time that we met there was a problem of your car getting nicked.

JOSH

Well, that was then, this is now. You looked down, that’s all. Hey, don’t believe everything you hear about me. You get a bad rep from people around here as well. So, was it anyone or anything in particular?

KIT

I like this guy, but he doesn’t.

JOSH

Ah, well if you’re talking about loving someone who won’t love you in return, that’s what happened with Hayley.

KIT

You, really loved her, huh?

JOSH

Yeah, yeah, I did. I wanted to make her happy, make her.

KIT

Make her love you.

JOSH

Yeah, but you’d know all about that, wouldn’t you? So, were you just friends with this guy?

KIT

I thought we had something special.

JOSH

Well, did anything ever happen?

KIT

No.

JOSH

Well, did you ever kiss?

KIT

Kind of. What difference does that make?

JOSH

Aw, it doesn’t make any difference. Just to some people it does.

KIT

Yeah, well there’s someone else now that matters to him. I better get going. Thanks.

JOSH

See, I’m one of the good guys. Just got pressure that’s all.

KIT walks out.

THE PALACE

ALEX and HAYLEY sit on the couch.

ALEX

Ah, look, he just said, take your time. Rest it. Wait for it to get better.

HAYLEY

That is great. I am so proud of you Alex. It took a lot of guts to do that.

NOAH walks down.

NOAH

OK, I’ve got twenty-four hours to beat this guy.

HAYLEY

Who? Josh or the cheat?

NOAH

Both.

There is a knock on the door.

JOSH

Hello.

JOSH walks in.

JOSH

The door was open. I need to talk to you.

HAYLEY

Oh, why don’t you leave him alone Josh? Haven’t you done enough damage?

NOAH

Hayls, it’s OK.

HAYLEY

OK. Well good luck.

NOAH and JOSH walk into the kitchen.

NOAH

The Uni’s given me an appeal so you may want to rethink talking to the board. I know how much you hate looking stupid.

JOSH

A counsellor that takes advantage of his clients. Sounds more stupid to me. How could you do it?

NOAH

Sorry, you’ve lost me.

JOSH

Kit. She told me everything.

NOAH

There’s nothing to tell.

JOSH

You’re supposed to help her, not take advantage of her.

NOAH

Hey, look. Just hold it right there. It was nothing like that.

JOSH

Yeah, well that’s not how she sees it and I don’t think that’s the way the boards going to see it either. I want that of my little financial transaction with the councillor. The negative and every copy.

NOAH

This is blackmail.

JOSH

You’re no stranger to it. Look at it this way, you need the silence, I need that photo. Deal.

JOSH walks away.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

KIT is putting stuff in her locker. NOAH walks up to her.

NOAH

You want to tell me why you did it?

KIT

I’m sorry.

NOAH

You’ve been talking to people about us.

KIT

Us. Now that’s a laugh. You barely know I exist.

NOAH

Kit, this could cost me my job.

KIT

I have no idea what you’re talking about Noah.

NOAH

Then how come Josh knows so much about our relationship?

TASHA walks up to KIT and NOAH.

TASHA

Is everything OK?

KIT

Yes. Fine Tasha. Look, I said I cared about someone, but I never said it was you. How dumb do you think I am?

NOAH

Great. So, he’s played us both for the fool. How could you be so stupid as to trust a sleaze you don’t even know?

KIT

What’s changed? Trusted you didn’t I.

NOAH

Kit.

KIT walks away. IRENE walks out a classroom. TASHA then follows KIT.

IRENE

Noah, what is going on? Kit’s upset.

NOAH

It’s a long story Irene.

NOAH walks away.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

JOSH is sitting at a table on his phone.

JOSH

No, that’s great news. Our deal got through. I checked it this morning.

Well call them again.

No.

KIT grabs JOSH’S phone. TASHA is at the counter.

KIT

You jerk.

JOSH

Ah, can you hang on a sec? That’s nice. Just when we were getting along so well.

KIT

I told you nothing, all right. Nothing happened.

JOSH

Right, OK, if you didn’t tell me anything why are you so upset?

KIT

Because you made him hate me. How could I be as stupid as to think you’d give a stuff about me?

JOSH

OK.

TASHA walks up to JOSH.

JOSH

Ahl, ahl. What are you doing?

KIT

Let him go Tash. He’s not worth it.

JOSH

Are you mad? Are you trying to break my arm?

TASHA

You hurt Kit again, I’ll hurt you.

JOSH

This is all a complete misunderstanding. Well, I know you, don’t I?

KIT

You’re a creep and if you come near me again I’ll break your arm, all right?

TASHA and KIT walk out. JOSH picks up his phone.

JOSH

Ah, mum. Yeah, yeah, look, hey. I have found you one hell of a story.

THE PALACE

NOAH and HAYLEY are in the kitchen.

HAYLEY

What? He’s trying to blackmail you. Why am I so surprised?

NOAH

Well I can’t talk. I did exactly the same thing to him.

HAYLEY

Yeah, but for the good of the kids and the drop-in centre. Josh is doing it for the good of Josh.

NOAH

This is how he operates, but no, not me, otherwise I shouldn’t be doing this job.

There is a knock on the door. SEB walks in.

NOAH

Seb.

SEB

Copies and all the negs.

NOAH

Thanks man. That’s one for us.

SEB

What do you need it for?

NOAH

I can’t really say. You’ve just got to trust me.

HAYLEY

No, Noah. You’re not going to go through with this.

SEB

I better get back to school.

NOAH

Thanks man.

SEB

No worries.

HAYLEY

See ya.

SEB walks out.

HAYLEY

Noah.

NOAH

Come on Hayls. I wasn’t going to use it anyway.

HAYLEY

Yeah, but why give in to him now?

NOAH

Because it’s the only chance that I’ve got.

HAYLEY

Yeah, but now you’ve got nothing left to fight him with.

NOAH

I’m not going to drag Kit any deeper into this.

HAYLEY

But what if he doesn’t keep his word? It’s a huge risk.

NOAH

It’s one risk I have to take Hayls.

THE BEACH HOUSE

JOSH walks in carrying a cake. IRENE is there.

JOSH

Well, I must have moved to suddenly or something and spooked her. Any how, I just wanted to make sure everything’s OK.

IRENE

Thanks Josh. Em, it’s a real kind fault.

JOSH

People say you’ve done an amazing job.

IRENE

Well, I don’t know about amazing darl. It’s been a challenge though. I’ve got to say that much.

JOSH

Two girls to look after. It can’t be easy.

IRENE

Yeah, well, you’re not wrong there.

JOSH

Look, if you ever need a hand. Someone to look after her for the day. Give yourself a break, I’ll be happy to help.

IRENE

Aw, love, look thanks. I appreciate your offer, but, you know, em, winning her trust can be a little bit tricky.

JOSH

Well, despite what other people might think about me Irene, I would never betray the trust of a child.

IRENE

No, what I meant was that, you know, it takes time with Tash. She’s only just getting used to Kit and they live in the same house for god sake.

JOSH

Aw, well Kit would know all about losing trust, wouldn’t she?

IRENE

What does that mean?

JOSH

With Noah. Hasn’t she told you.

THE PALACE

IRENE and NOAH are there.

IRENE

Noah, what in gods name were you thinking?

NOAH

Irene, I’m sorry, OK. It was the last thing I meant to happen. It was one kiss. I didn’t pursue, I promise.

IRENE

Love, you should have at least told me what was going on.

NOAH

I just, I guess I thought she’d tell you herself.

IRENE

Well, maybe that’s why she’s been going off the rails.

NOAH

Come on Irene. I’m not to blame for all her problems.

IRENE

No, but you didn’t have to add to them.

NOAH

I’m not proud of what I did. It’s just, she somehow got to me. It’s just sometimes, she was in so much pain, I just wanted to hold her and make her feel OK. Sometimes I just wonder how things might have turned out if I hadn’t met as a counsellor.

IRENE

Yes, but love, you did and you can’t change that.

NOAH

Look, I know I stuffed up and I know that’s she hurting, but don’t worry, I’m not going to let Josh win at this.

IRENE

What’s Josh got to do with the price of fish?

NOAH

Everything. If he goes to the board about Kit, I’ll get the sack and the drop-in centre will be forced to close.

THE SURF CLUB

The girls football team are loading up a van. HAYLEY and ALF are there.

HAYLEY

We’re going to win, we’re going to win.

ALF

Ay, ay, ay. Settle down. I’ve only got one pair of arms.

IRENE drives up.

IRENE

Good luck girls.

HAYLEY

Thanks Irene.

IRENE

Listen, I’ve got to run a few errands, but I’ll see you at the game. Knock them dead.

HAYLEY

You bet we will.

IRENE

See ya.

IRENE drives away. NOAH and AMBER are looking at some motorbikes.

NOAH

Nice piece of machinery.

AMBER

Aw, don’t let the paint throw you.

HAYLEY walks over to them.

HAYLEY

Aw, what? Are you really letting him take it?

AMBER

Only the on the condition that he kicks some serious butts today.

HAYLEY

Oh, you, won’t you Lawson.

NOAH

I will coach.

ALEX walks up to them.

ALEX

Distracting my players before the big match are you?

AMBER

He was. Good luck babe.

NOAH

Yeah.

HAYLEY

Em, Amber, I think we better finish up loading up the van.

AMBER and HAYLEY walk away.

ALEX

Really go for it today man.

NOAH

Yeah, I will. You too?

ALEX

I’m looking for a sign from the gods.

NOAH

I think the gods just heard you.

KIRSTY walks up to them.

ALEX

Kirsty.

KIRSTY

Couldn’t let you guys take the glory without me, could I?

THE BEACH HOUSE

There is a knock on the door. TASHA looks through the shutters. JOSH is standing outside.

JOSH

Hello, is anyone home?

TASHA hides in the kitchen. JOSH then walks through the other door.

JOSH

Hello.

TASHA attacks JOSH.

TASHA

You’re bad. You hurt Kit.

JOSH

No, not me. Noah, Noah hurt Kit.

TASHA

Noah.

JOSH

Yeah, I’m your friend. I just want to help you.

TASHA

I don’t need your help. I’ll look after me.

JOSH

OK. Well, I thought we could chat. You know, get to know each other.

TASHA

Do you want something from me?

JOSH

No, no. I want to be your friend, that’s all.

TASHA

Why?

JOSH

Well I reckon I can understand you. You know, what you’ve been through. Look, I don’t exactly fit in around here either and I reckon people like you and I should stick together. What do you reckon? Want to be friends?

THE FOOTALL PITCH

The referees run out. ALEX has the girls huddled together. AMBER, KIRSTY and HAYLEY are there.

ALEX

All right, look. I know that I have been tough on you girls, all right, I know that, but you’ve always gave me a hundred percent. I’ve asked for a hundred percent and you’ve gave me a hundred percent. All right, you’ve never let me down. Now remember one thing. We can win this thing today, all right. We can win it, all right, because we’ve put sweat into this and because we want to win it. Now look, I look at you guys and see a bunch of champions, so get out there and play like champions. All right, make me proud.

The other team cheers. IRENE walks up to KIRSTY.

IRENE

Kirsty, Kirsty love. Good to see you back.

KIRSTY

Yeah, well I couldn’t have let the team town.

IRENE

Em, listen I just wanted to say good luck. See you.

NORTHERN DISTRICTS UNIVERSITY

NOAH is sitting there. KEVIN walks along and sits down next to him.

NOAH

You don’t really care if I get kicked out, do you?

KEVIN

It’s not my fault what the faculty decides to do.

NOAH

You know, I’m here trying to save my degree.

KEVIN

Yeah, so am I.

THE DEAN walks out his office.

THE DEAN

Lets get this over with shall we. This way please.

THE FOOTBALL PITCH

KIRSTY, AMBER and HAYLEY are playing football. HAYLEY is tackled and falls to the ground.

REFEREE

Play on.

ALEX, COLLEEN, ALF and IRENE are on the sidelines.

ALF

Aw, come on ref. It’s not rugby. Send her off.

NORTHERN DISTRICTS UNIVERSITY

NOAH and KEVIN are there. THE DEAN sits at the other side of the desk.

THE DEAN

Name two reference texts for the essay.

KEVIN

Rhys Niven, The Western Nuclears.

NOAH

Christophe Junewitcz, Marxism and the New.

KEVIN

Marxism and the New Materialist. Actually that was written by Lady Paninsky.

THE DEAN

Correct Mr. Vaughan.

NOAH

He just memorised the bibliography.

KEVIN

Actually Paninsky was one of the first woman to address Marxist as the old social condition.

THE DEAN

Thank you Mr. Vaughan. Mr. Lawson just answer the questions as best you can.

THE FOOTBALL PITCH

KIRSTY, AMBER and KIRSTY are playing football. The other team scores. ALF, ALEX, IRENE and COLLEEN are on the sidelines.

ALF

Come on girls. Form up. Straight in a line.

ALEX

It’s not union Alf. It’s soccer. Girls don’t worry about it. Get into position. Heads up.

SEB watches the game.

NORTHERN DISTRICTS UNIVERSITY

SIMON, NOAH and THE DEAN are there.

THE DEAN

This essay was obviously written with a great deal of passion and with a strong feel for the issues, so what we’d like to hear is what compelled you to choose this topic? Mr. Vaughan, if you’d like to start.

SIMON

Em, OK. I guess I’m just intrigued by Marx’s ideas. His view of society. How his theory works.

THE DEAN

Yes, but this goes much deeper than theories. What made you look at

SIMON

Well just the way that, he, em, looks at things and puts them differently to other philosopher mostly.

THE DEAN

Mr. Lawson. Mostly.

NOAH

I’m from Summer Bay.

THE DEAN

Yes, I know.

NOAH

We have all different types of families there. Mum, dad, three kids, foster families, you name it and when I read Marxist societies superstructure it sort of made me realise that it was like a metaphor for how families work because they both rely on economic rules, on laws and traditions, but there’s one difference. Families also run on emotions, on relationships. That’s what fascinates me about the theory. What will happen when it collides with real people.

THE DEAN

You can hold it there Mr. Lawson. You’re free to go. Exemplary essay Noah.

NOAH

Thanks sir.

NOAH walks out. THE DEAN looks at KEVIN.

THE FOOTBALL PITCH

The score is Nudies 0, Raptors 1. KIRSTY, HAYLEY and AMBER are playing. ALEX, ALF and COLLEEN stand at the side of the pitch.

COLLEEN

They need to even up the score and go into extra time.

ALEX

All right Colleen.

COLLEEN

It’s there only hope.

ALEX

Yeah, thanks Colleen. Hey, stay on the wing Hayley.

KIRSTY

Hayley, shoot.

HAYLEY kicks the ball. She knocks over ALEX.

ALEX

Ah, ah, ah.

KIRSTY gets the ball in front of the goals.

ALEX

What are you doing? Keep going. Kick it in Kirsty. Shoot.

The goalkeeper runs out and kicks the ball. ALF, COLLEEN and IRENE are all disappointed. ALEX shakes his head.

THE SURF CLUB

NOAH and JOSH are there.

NOAH

You’re really big on these secret meetings.

JOSH

Where is the negatives?

NOAH hands JOSH a piece of paper.

JOSH

If this is some kind of joke.

NOAH

No, it’s not a joke. I need you to sign that. Then I’ll give you the negatives.

JOSH

I, Josh West, hereby guarantee to allow the Sarah McKay Drop-In Centre to remain open for the balance of a three year tenure.

NOAH

Three year tenure as per the original agreement unless mutually agreed otherwise.

JOSH

No. I don’t have to sign this.

NOAH

Well I don’t have to give you the negatives.

JOSH

Well, we both know how that story ends.

NOAH

Yeah, I know, I go down, you go down with me unless you sign the documents. Call it insurance.

JOSH

Getting good at this. Going to have to hit you up for some tips.

NOAH

No. They would be wasted on you. Anyway, I’m doing this for the kids at the centre.

JOSH

Very noble of you and saving your own necks got nothing to do with.

NOAH

Yeah. Of course it has. As long as I’m there the centre stays open and now that I’m reinstated at Uni, I’m not going to let you tear apart we’ve worked for.

JOSH

You always have to have a go at me, don’t you? We used to be friends once.

NOAH

Some friendships I can do without.

THE PALACE

ALEX, KIRSTY, AMBER and KIRSTY are there.

ALEX

Ah.

KIRSTY

Em, Flynn’s on his way guys.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I’ll get you some water.

AMBER

I’ll get it.

AMBER walks into the kitchen.

HAYLEY

Baby, I am really, really sorry. I was watching the ball.

ALEX

No, that’s good. That’s what you’re supposed to do.

KIRSTY

No. Alex, I’m sorry.

ALEX

No.

KIRSTY

It just through me off.

ALEX

No, I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to hear it, because if you were focusing, you would have taken that shot, full stop.

HAYLEY

Alex, it was a mistake.

ALEX

It was a mistake that cost us the premiership, all right.

HAYLEY

It’s only a game.

ALEX

No, it cost us the whole season. In one second, there it goes. You know, if you’d at least scored this busted leg would seen worth it.

HAYLEY

No, no Alex. We lost the game because of a stupid accident and if you can’t see that we cared more about a friend than stupid glory, then Alex, I don’t even know if I know who you are anymore.

HAYLEY walks away.
