SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

SCOTT PHILLIPS and KANE are there.

KANE

How did you find me?

SCOTT

Why? You running from me?

KANE

No, no. Why would I do that?

SCOTT

I don’t know. You tell me. Where’s the money?

KANE

I don’t have it.

SCOTT

Well go get it.

KANE

No I mean, it’s gone.

SCOTT

You learned a long time ago not to lie to me Kane all right. Now, go get the money.

KANE

No, no. I’m not lying. I hid it inside a mattress and it got burnt.

SCOTT

A mattress. Are you serious?

KANE

It’s true.

SCOTT

It’s bull. Now, I need it.

KANE

It wasn’t my fault.

SCOTT

I’m not interested in any rubbish stories about a mattress fire.

KANE

There’s someone coming. Just hide, all right.

SCOTT goes into the office. KANE walks in.

KIRSTY

Kane.

KANE

Kirsty.

KIRSTY

Yeah.

KANE

What are you doing here?

KIRSTY

Well, we said we’d meet up afer the party.

KANE

Yeah, I’ve still got heaps of work here. I’m going to hang around.

KIRSTY

Oh, no. That’s no problem. I’ll wait for you.

KANE

I’m just really tired so I might get an early night.

KIRSTY

What’s wrong?

KANE

Nothing. Nothing. I’m just really tired. I’ll see you tomorrow after school.

KIRSTY

OK. Are you sure?

KANE

Yeah, yeah, I promise. I’ll see you tomorrow.

KIRSTY

After school.

KANE and KIRSTY kiss. KIRSTY walks out. SCOTT walks out the office.

SCOTT

Mattress fire, huh. Dead set.

KANE

Dead set, all right. You’ve got to believe me. It’s true.

SCOTT

You’ve been stupid, haven’t you?

KANE

I had to stash it somewhere. It seemed like a good place at the time.

SCOTT

It seems like you’re going to have to make good now, doesn’t it? It seems like you’re going to have to help me get some more.

KANE

Scott, I’m not going to help.

SCOTT

Or that pretty little girlfriend of yours, she might get hurt because of your stupidity and we wouldn’t want that, would we?

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

JADE is on the couch reading a letter.

JADE

Don’t let these troubled times steal your beautiful smile. While I’m around you’ll never be alone. I’ve found you now; the rest is up to you. Open your heart and you’ll find me too.

KIRSTY walks in.

KIRSTY

First sign of going mad.

JADE

Reading aloud isn’t talking to yourself.

KIRSTY

Almost. Do you still think that Nick wrote it?

JADE

Yeah. Not that it matters anyway. Where have you been?

KIRSTY

Out.

JADE

Seen Kane on the way home?

KIRSTY

Ah, well, Jade. He wasn’t exactly welcome at Nick’s party was he.

JADE

He could have come if he wanted to.

KIRSTY

Do you think Nick would have wanted him there?

THE BEACH HOUSE

HAYLEY and WILL are there.

WILL

So, he does the film, gets to be an action figure. Then what?

HAYLEY

Does another one.

WILL

It’s crazy.

HAYLEY

I know he’s going to be on the other side of the world with everyone wanting to know his name.

WILL

Yeah, but it’s just Nick. Irene’s pretty proud of him.

HAYLEY

Yeah, yeah, but I’m worried about it

WILL

Why? How’s she’s going to cope without him?

HAYLEY

Yeah, and Paris too. She’s just lost her boyfriend and her son in the same week.

WILL

Yeah, well it’s been tough on you too. What? With Alex gone.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I really miss him.

WILL

You like him a lot, don’t you?

HAYLEY

Yes, I do.

WILL

Em, how’s Dani?

HAYLEY

Yeah, she’s good.

HAYLEY and DANI walk into the living room.

WILL

Is she happy?

HAYLEY

Yeah. She’s got a guy as well.

WILL

Just asking.

HAYLEY

Just asking, huh.

WILL

Yeah, we used to be close, remember. I just wanted to see if she was happy.

HAYLEY

What’s going on Will?

WILL

Nothing Hayley. I haven’t been here in a while. I’m just catching up, that’s all.

THE SAUNDERS HOUSE

SALLY and FLYNN walk through to the kitchen. SALLY goes into the fridge.

FLYNN

Come back to bed.

SALLY

I just wanted some chocolate.

FLYNN

Aren’t I sweet enough for you?

FLYNN and SALLY kiss. NORMAN and COLLEEN walk in.

COLLEEN

Aw, you are a charmer Norman Shadbolt. I best be quiet. We don’t want to wake Sally and Flynn.

SALLY and FLYNN walk through from the kitchen.

SALLY

Colleen.

FLYNN

Norman, hi.

COLLEEN

Oh, I was just about to put the kettle on.

SALLY

We were.

FLYNN

We were.

SALLY

Out of bed anyway.

NORMAN

I hope we’re.

SALLY

No.

FLYNN

No.

SALLY

Did you have a good night?

COLLEEN

Oh, yes, it was lovely.

SALLY

All right. We best get out of your way, anyway.

COLLEEN

Good night.

FLYNN

Night.

SALLY

Night.

SALLY and FLYNN walk into the bedrooms.

NORMAN

What a lovely couple.

COLLEEN

Oh, they really are.

NORMAN

I meant us.

The following morning, SALLY and FLYNN are in the kitchen. COLLEEN sits at the table.

COLLEEN

He was a real gentlemen.

SALLY

I wondered about the flowers in the surgery.

COLLLEN

Anyone would think they’d walked into a florists.

FLYNN

A pretty snappy dresser.

COLLEEN

The snappiest which is why I’m going into Yabbie Creek this morning to buy a new outfit. I can’t let him show me up.

FLYNN

Oh, great. I’ll come with you. I wanted to come with you anyway for the chemo session so.

COLLEEN

Oh, you don’t have to do that.

FLYNN

No, that’s all right. I might do a bit of clothes shopping with you.

COLLEEN

I’m postponing the appointment.

FLYNN

Colleen, I don’t think that’s.

COLLEEN

Well, Norman’s going to call and if he’s suggests lunch I want to able to go.

SALLY

Well, I’m sure that Norman won’t mind postponing.

COLLEEN

I mind.

FLYNN

We’ve spoken about this before.

COLLEEN

I’m cured. I feel better than I have in years.

FLYNN

Well, you can’t be sure you’re cured until you’ve finished the chemo Colleen.

COLLEEN

It’s the chemo that’s making me sick. When I’m with Norman I feel wonderful.

There’s a knock on the door.

SALLY

And it’s great that he’s making you feel so good.

FLYNN

But he’s no substitute for the chemo.

FLYNN goes to answer the door.

SALLY

You can’t ignore this Colleen.

COLLEEN

I am not going.

IRENE and TASHA walk in.

FLYNN

Hi.

IRENE

Hi, morning love. Hi Sal. Eh, look darl, I’m just about to drop Nick at the airport and I wanted to check with you about, you know, this one and school.

SALLY

Yeah, well I had to file a report on the incident.

IRENE

Yeah, I thought you might.

SALLY

Yeah, but, I’ve spoken to the other teacher involved and she doesn’t want to take things any further.

IRENE

So, she can go to school?

SALLY

Yeah, I’ll keep her by my side for a little while. Hopefully that will help her settle in and we’ll just take things from there.

IRENE

Aw, sounds ideal love.

SALLY

Is that OK with you Tasha?

TASHA

Sounds ideal.

A PARK

KANE and SCOTT PHILLIPS are there.

SCOTT

So, what we do is wait till late in the day, when the registers are full and then we hit the place before Alf even knows what’s going on.

KANE

Why’s it got to be here in the bay?

SCOTT

Mate, it’s not a choice.

KANE

Not the diner.

SCOTT

It’s got to be here. I need the cash.

IRENE drives by with TASHA in the car. SCOTT sees her.

SCOTT

Did you know that she was here?

KANE

Who?

SCOTT

Who? The girl from the garage.

KANE

Yeah.

SCOTT

Aw, mate, why didn’t you tell me? She can ID us.

KANE

It’s not a problem mate.

SCOTT

It’s not a problem. What do you mean it’s not a problem? She knows everything you stupid idiot.

KANE

She only saw me. You had your balaclava. Just chill out, all right. I’ve been here a couple of weeks. I’ve managed to stay out of her way.

SCOTT

Look, all you have to do is turn down the wrong corner at the wrong time and she’ll point the figure at you. That’s two things we’ve got to take care of. The job and the loose ends.

KANE

Scott.

SCOTT

The job and the girl.

KANE

I’m not going to hurt her.

SCOTT

You don’t have to. I’ll clean up, OK. It’s what older brothers do, isn’t it? The job. The job we do together.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

SCOLTT PHILLIPS and KANE walk in.

SCOTT

Will you just relax? We’re just here to get some food. We’ll get the money later.

ALF is behind the counter.

SCOTT

Alf, Alf.

ALF

What the hell are you doing here?

SCOTT

I’m on parole. I came to see my brother. You still serving breakfast aren’t you?

KANE

We won’t stay along.

SCOTT

I did my time. I don’t want any trouble.

ALF

Good.

SCOTT

So, how’s Shauna anyway?

ALF

You beter this goose here if he doesn’t want any trouble to watch his mouth.

KANE

Yeah. We’ll go and get something to eat at the surf club.

ALF

Yeah. That is a good idea.

KANE

I deal with him. I’m sorry Alf. Thanks.

ALF walks away.

SCOTT

I want to order here.

KANE

I’m working at the surf club. We’ll get something to eat there.

SCOTT

I’m working too.

KANE

I’m trying to make a life for myself in this town, all right. You can do any town. Just leave this town alone.

SCOTT

You are becoming very repetitious. Our discussions over. Hey Alf, got any menus?

SUMMER BAY HIGH

MAX runs in. TASHA and SALLY are there.

MAX

Oh, Tasha. We better get to role call.

SALLY

Oh no. Tasha’s sticking with me today.

MAX

Why? Isn’t she coming to our class?

SALLY

No, she just needs to get the hang of it.

MAX

Well, I’ll walk her home if you like.

SALLY

That would be very nice. Thank you Max.

TASHA

When is Irene coming back?

SALLY

You’ll see her this afternoon. I think she’s missing her.

MAX

Yeah. I know how she feels. Do you know when Eloise is getting back?

SALLY

Well, as far as we know it will be next week, but things can change.

SALLY and TASHA walk away. JADE and KIRSTY are walking along.

JADE

Kirst, there’s another letter.

KIRSTY

From Nick.

JADE

How can he put it there before he left?

KIRSTY

He couldn’t have.

JADE

Maybe it really isn’t him.

KIRSTY

Mmm, maybe he was telling the truth after all.

JADE

I really thought he loved me.

KIRSTY

Well, come on, if it wasn’t Nick, then it must mean you have a secret admirer.

THE BEACH HOUSE

WILL, HAYLEY and IRENE walk in.

IRENE

Hollywood won’t know what’s hit it.

WILL

I wish I was up in the air with him right now.

HAYLEY

What’s going on Will?

WILL

Nothing.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well you may not want to talk about it, but I know there’s something. I’m your sister.

WILL

No big deal.

IRENE

Oh, love, I’m so sorry. I’ve been caught up with Nick leaving.

WILL

No, it’s just things aren’t great at home, that’s all.

HAYLEY

With Gypsy?

WILL

Yeah. Just a few problems.

HAYLEY

What’s wrong?

WILL

I don’t want to worry you guys, all right.

HAYLEY

Well, what are families for hey?

WILL

I don’t know. Maybe I married the wrong girl.

THE SURF CLUB

JADE and KIRSTY walk along.

JADE

I do understand you and I know how you must be feeling without Nick. I wish I could give you a hug. Anything to see that awesome smile.

KIRSTY

There’s no way that’s Seb.

JADE and KIRSTY sit at a table.

JADE

We have been getting closer. Only as friends, but.

KIRSTY

Jade, he’s not romantic. Some poem that he wrote me.

JADE

Maybe he got better. Maybe he likes me now that we’re spending more time together.

KIRSTY

I don’t think it’s his style.

JADE

Well, however it is knows everything about me. How I think? How I feel?

KIRSTY

That’s because he reads your diary.

JADE

Then how am I going to find out who this is?

KIRSTY

I don’t know, but Jade, I think it could be a bit weird. He could turn out to be really creepy. Do you really want to know who he is?

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

WILL and DANI are there.

DANI

Scott’s amazing.

WILL

That’s great, especially since you’ve haven’t known him all that long.

DANI

Yeah, but it feels like years.

WILL

So, life’s all good then?

DANI

Except Kane being back.

WILL

I’m sorry Dan, but I don’t know how you’re holding it together.

DANI

We talked about it.

WILL

Who did?

DANI

The family. I said I’d live with it, but I’m just so tired of pretending everything’s OK.

WILL

Yeah, when it’s not.

DANI

It will never be normal him being here, you know. You know what it was like.

WILL

I can’t believe they didn’t ask you. When I think about him it makes me so angry.

DANI

I just wish he’d disappear.

WILL

Hey Dan, do you ever, um, you know, if we had stuck together.

DANI

Will.

WILL

You know, like the whole Kane thing and Josh. It wouldn’t have happened.

DANI

What are you saying?

WILL

Gyps and I. What if we made a mistake? What it you and me.

DANI

I have a boyfriend. Scott, remember.

WILL

But things were good, weren’t they?

DANI

Yeah.

WILL

Well we could make them better again

DANI

No, don’t do this. Things have changed. Don’t do this now.

WILL

Yeah, em, you’re right. I’m going to go. I’m sorry.

WILL walks out.

A ROAD

MAX and TASHA walk along the road.

MAX

Do you like Miss Fletcher?

TASHA nods.

MAX

Yeah, she’s a real cool teacher. Oh, no, my locker.

TASHA

What?

MAX

I forgot my maths book. I’ll have to go. Will you be OK?

TASHA

Yeah.

MAX

OK. See you tomorrow.

MAX runs away. TASHA continues walking. SCOTT PHILLIPS draws up to TASHA.

SCOTT

Babe. Do you need a lift? Your bag. It’s kind of heavy.

TASHA

It’s OK.

SCOTT

Pretty girls like you shouldn’t have to carry their own bags.

SCOTT gets out the car.

SCOTT

Chuck it in the back. I’ll take you where ever you want to go.

TASHA starts to run away. SCOTT chases after her. Later on KANE is walking along the road. SCOTT’S car is driving along the road. KANE signals for it to stop. The car stops.

KANE

Where are you heading?

SCOTT

I’m leaving town.

KANE

What about the money?

SCOTT

I’ll get it another time.

KANE hears a banging noise.

KANE

What was that?

SCOTT

Nothing you need to worry about. Look, I’m going. It’s what you wanted. Hey, hey Kane.

KANE grabs the keys.

SCOTT

Stay out of it Kane.

KANE opens the boot of the car.

KANE

What are you doing man?

KANE helps TASHA out the boot.

SCOTT

Look, it’s the girl or it’s us. All right, it’s not if you’re going to handle it. I’m doing this for you.

KANE

I don’t need your help.

SCOTT

She recognises us. Now give her here.

SCOTT tries to drag TASHA off KANE. A car drives along the road.

KANE

Right.

SCOTT gets back in the car.

THE BEACH HOUSE

HAYLEY and IRENE are making a cake.

IRENE

There we go.

HAYLEY

There.

IRENE

Oh.

DANI walks in.

DANI

Hey.

IRENE

Hi love.

HAYLEY

Hey.

DANI

What’s the occasion?

IRENE

Tasha’s first day back at school. We wanted to do something special.

DANI

I saw Will.

HAYLEY

Yeah. I thought you would.

DANI

He doesn’t seem too happy.

HAYLEY

That’s an understatement.

DANI

What’s happening with him and Gypsy?

IRENE

Well love, he told me that he wanted some space till he works out what he wants.

DANI

He made it pretty clear what he wanted to me, but I still care about him, but not that way. We weren’t right together. You know, Josh and I weren’t right together either.

HAYLEY

Definitely not.

DANI

It’s what’s right for me.

IRENE

Well, love, have you told Will that?

DANI

I told him it wasn’t going to happen, but I think he’s just pretty messed up.

HAYLEY

Yeah, someone’s got to talk to him.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

TASHA and KANE walk into the bedroom.

KANE

We’re not going to go the cops OK. I hate Scott for what he did to me, but they going to ask for answers that I can’t give. You’re just going to have to trust me. We can’t say anything OK. Not yet. We just need some time. Come on. I need your help here. Please. Look, I helped you. You help me. It’s a secret, OK.

TASHA

Secret.

KANE

Maybe, I can even find out what really happened to your parents.

TASHA

You can find out.

KANE

Maybe. Right, I’ll help you. You help me.

KIRSTY walks in.

KIRSTY

Kane, what’s going on?

KANE

Babe. We were just talking.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE sits at the table. She hears a bang.

IRENE

Tasha.

WILL walks in.

IRENE

Aw, Will. Hi love.

WILL

Relax Irene. She’ll get home from school no problem. Max is with her.

IRENE

Aw, god help us. Knowing him, they could be up to anything.

WILL

You shouldn’t have.

IRENE

I didn’t. You know, I’d offer you a bit, but you can’t have the cake and eat it too.

WILL

I forgot how small this town was.

IRENE and WILL walk into the kitchen.

IRENE

Sweetheart, what is going on that you had to talk to Dani about?

WILL

Gypsy.

IRENE

What? In a cult. Aliens. Give me a clue here.

WILL

Things just aren’t what I expected them to be.

IRENE

Aw, sweetheart, they never are.

WILL

She’s said that to me before.

IRENE

Yeah, and you never listen.

WILL

And, everything is angst.

IRENE

Do you still love her?

WILL

I thought if I gave her some space.

IRENE

Dani gave me the impression that you wanted a lot more. Will love, you have got a family here. You’ve got obligations.

WILL

I don’t know what to do.

IRENE

Gypsy, wants you to call her.

WILL

What did you tell her?

IRENE

Love, I didn’t tell her anything, but you made a promise to her when you married her. Now, if you care for her and Lily you won’t let this fester. That’s not fair anyone.

WILL

But I don’t know how to fix things.

IRENE

I think the first step is you have to go back up there and you have to talk about it mate. You go back home and you sort this out.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

KIRSTY and KANE are in the bedroom.

KIRSTY

Well, last night you didn’t want to talk to me. Now, you’re holding out with Tasha.

KANE

She’s got a lot of problems.

KIRSTY

Yeah, tell me about it.

KANE

She’s kid all right. She came here for help so I helped her. Babe, if it came across like that I totally

didn’t mean.

KIRSTY

Yes, Kane. That’s exactly how it came across.

KANE

I came back to Summer Bay because I want to be with you. Nothing else matters. I love you.

KIRSTY and KANE cuddle.

THE SAUNDERS HOUSE

SCOTT PHILLIPS walks into the surgery.

FLYNN’S SURGERY

SCOTT walks in. He locks the door. FLYNN walks out his office.

SCOTT

G’day.

FLYNN

G’day.

SCOTT

Doctor.

FLYNN

Yeah.

SCOTT

I’m glad you’re here. Em, can you help me out?

FLYNN

Yeah, sure.  Sorry mate, my receptionists out at the moment. What’s the problem?

SCOTT

Aw, em, I had brekkie down at the diner this morning and well, I’m feeling a bit crook.

FLYNN

It’s probably just a bug mate. There’s a few of them go around.

SCOTT

Yeah.

FLYNN

Come through. We’ll give you the once over.

FLYNN walks through. SCOTT pulls out a gun.
