Scripts - Episode 3579

THE BEACH

SALLY and FLYNN are walking along.

FLYNN

For a while there I wasn’t even sure that she was going to turn up.

SALLY

Sounds like a big breakthrough for Kit.

FLYNN

She could see it too. Made it look at herself, and realise how far she’d come. Hopefully it will convince her that she can go on her own.

FLYNN’S mobile rings.

FLYNN

Oh, sorry. Irene.

What happened?

OK, I’ll be there in five.

FLYNN hangs up.

FLYNN

A crisis with Jane. I’ll meet you at the diner.

SALLY

Yeah, OK.

FLYNN

OK.

FLYNN and SALLY kiss.

SALLY

See you.

FLYNN runs off. SALLY continues walking along the beach and sees KIRSTY and KANE kissing behind a boat. She continues walking along the beach. KIRSTY and KANE stop kissing.

KIRSTY

I should probably go. I’ve got soccer practice and Alex will kill me if I’m late. Will I see you later on though?

KANE

Aw, yeah. No, I tried to get the keys for the drop-in centre off Noah, but he wouldn’t give them to me.

Something about following committee rules.

KIRSTY

How about I meet you in the gym?

KANE

No, babe, we can’t. Jesse’s got me jumping through hoops. I’ve got to prove myself.

KIRSTY

Then, we just won’t get caught.

KANE

Look, babe. I’m serious. I could lose my job. No one knows how hard it is starting again, where everywhere I turn, someone’s blocking me.

KIRSTY

I believe in you.

KANE

Someone’s got to.

KIRSTY and KANE kiss.

THE BEACH HOUSE

JANE DOE is in the bathroom. IRENE, FLYNN and JESSE all stand at the door.

IRENE

She won’t come out.

JESSE

She’s got her back against the door. I didn’t want to force my way in.

FLYNN

Jane, its Flynn. Lynnfay, from the hospital. I’m going to open the door. You’ll have to move.

IRENE

Sweetheart, Flynn’s going to push the door.

JANE DOE runs behind the sink. FLYNN opens the door and he walks in along with IRENE and JESSE.

FLYNN

That’s all right. Don’t be afraid.

IRENE

Hey, omecay, omecay. It’s OK darling. Ivegay andhay.  Come on. Ivegay andhay.

JANE DOE screams.

IRENE

Oh, love, I’m so sorry.

FLYNN

Look at her arms. They look like fresh burns.

IRENE

They can’t be.

FLYNN

I thought you said the oil caught on fire.

IRENE

Well, it did, but she was nowhere near it when it happened was she Jess?

JESSE

She was nowhere near it. I mean, there was a flare up and she was screaming, but there is no way she could have got burnt.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

SALLY and FLYNN sit at a table.

SALLY

So, the burns aren’t real. Sort of like religious stigmata.

FLYNN

Well, they’re real to her, but they’re psychosomatic. See the cold water seems to ease the pain, but there was blistering. There was no swelling. The burns weren’t hot to touch like normal burns would be.

SALLY

What? So just seeing the flames can cause the kind of reaction?

FLYNN

It’s not unheard of, especially if she’s had like, major psychological trauma connected with fire.

SALLY

Aw, like losing a parent.

FLYNN

That’s what I’m thinking.

SALLY

But that’s assuming that the bodies they found were her parents.

FLYNN

Well, either way. I mean, we’re guessing at what her psychological issues might be. The police have got a photo and they’re putting it out there until they find somebody to come and identify her, we don’t have any answers.

SALLY

What if they never do?

LEAH walks across to a table where SEB and ALF are sitting.

LEAH

Aw, new recipes guys. Tell me what you think.

SEB

It looks great. We all going to the big match this Saturday?

LEAH

Aw, I can’t. VJ’s got a party.

ALF

Gee, it’s an important game love. I tell you, if the girls win this one, they’re through to the semis.

LEAH

Well, I’m sure I’ll hear about it. Well, tell me what you think?

LEAH walks away

ALF

So, are you even going to try some?

SEB

I’m not really hungry.

ALF

Mate, you haven’t eaten for three days.

SEB

I’m eating plenty. Just because you haven’t seen me eating doesn’t mean I’m not. Just get off my back, OK.

SEB walks away. ALF walks over to the table where SALLY and FLYNN are sitting.

ALF

Excuse me guys. Doc, is it normal for a teenage kid to go off his tucker for three days?

FLYNN

Aw, it could be a lot of reasons Alf.

ALF

Well, he’s not saying much, but it’s pretty clear to me. Kirsty’s giving him and young Kane the flick and he’s taken it pretty hard. I don’t suppose you could talk to him for me.

FLYNN

Yeah, I suppose I could give it a go.

ALF

Thanks mate. Don would know how to handle him, but I’m flying pretty blind here.

ALF walks away.

SALLY

Alf’s wrong about Kirsty.

FLYNN

What?

SALLY

Well, she may have dumped Seb, but, she certainly hasn’t dumped Kane.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

KIRSTY and MAX are there,

MAX

Hey, Kirsty.

KIRSTY

Make it quick Max. Alex would kill me for being late. I don’t have any clean gear.

MAX

If a lady has kids of her own; do you think she could ever love a kids who’s not hers?

KIRSTY

Ah, well, my mum loves you just the same as she loves us.

MAX

Yeah, but I’m a Sutherland. Auntie Shelley, well, she sort of had to love me.

KIRSTY

Well, OK, what about Miss Fletcher. She’s adopted and her mum loves her to bits.

MAX

Yeah. Pippa was really nice.

KIRSTY

Mmm, Beth’s really  nice too, isn’t she? Anyway, I’ve got to go. Alex will kill me.

COLLEEN walks in.

COLLEEN

Yoo-hoo. I’ve just came for my mail.

KIRSTY

OK. Max will get it.

KIRSTY walks out.

MAX

Here you go.

COLLEEN

Maximus, we can’t go on like this, you know. All right. I’ll start first. I think I might have overreacted the other day.

MAX

No, it was me. I just wanted to help. I just wanted to prove to you how special you are. Anyone would be really proud to talk to you and not get paid. I’m sorry Colleen.

COLLEEN

Aw, Maximus. Stop. I know you’re heart’s in the right place. I’m just being sensitive. Aw, come here.

MAX and COLLEEN cuddle.

MAX

So we’ve still got a date for my book launch?

COLLEEN

I’d be honoured.

THE SURF CLUB

KANE is there. He hears some banging. He opens the doors.

KANE

Got you.

JESSE is there.

KANE

Mate, thought you were a burglar. What are you doing here?

JESSE

Saw the lights on mate. What’s your excuse?

KANE

Em, I was just finishing clearing up.

JESSE walks into the gym.

JESSE

It looks like you tidy things pretty constructively.

KANE

Yeah, it’s just for the night Jesse.

JESSE

You can’t stay here mate.  You’ll have to find somewhere else.

KANE

You tell me about it.

KIRSTY

Hello.

KIRSTY walks in.

KIRSTY

Eh, hey you guys. I’m sorry.  Em, I thought, I thought Dani would still be at the kiosk.

JESSE

What? This time of night.

KIRSTY

Aw, no. I’ve just been at soccer training. I didn’t realise it was so late. OK, em, she’s not here. I better go home. Sorry, sorry, see you.

KIRSTY walks away.

JESSE

What you do out there is your business? If you stuff up in here it’s on me. Make sure the doors are locked.

JESSE walks away.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

SEB walks in and into the kitchen. He opens the fridge. ALF is upstairs.

ALF

Is that you Seb?

SEB

Yep.

ALF

Grab some milk for the morning, will you. We’re almost out up here.

SEB

OK.

SEB takes a bite of a cake and then spits it in the bin. He slumps against the fridge.

THE BEACH HOUSE

LEAH and JESSE are in the kitchen.

JESSE

I thought you were going to have a sleep in this morning.

LEAH

Yeah, well, I’ve changed my mind. I’m taking your advice. I’m applying for a passport today. So, do you want to come with us?

JESSE

I can’t. I’m working.

LEAH

Aw. Hey, em, you going to introduce us?

JANE DOE is sitting on the couch.

JESSE

Sure, Jane.

JANE DOE

Jane.

LEAH

Hi Jane.

JANE DOE

Galah.

LEAH

Yeah, he’s a bit off a galah sometimes, isn’t he?

JESSE

No. She thinks that’s my name.

LEAH

Em, Jane. This is Jesse.

JANE DOE

Jesse.

LEAH

No, no, no, not me. Him.

JESSE

Good luck.

IRENE walks in.

IRENE

Oh, hello. I thought I heard your chirpy voice. How are you darl?

LEAH

I’m all right. How are you?

IRENE

Pretty damm flash mself, actually.

JESSE

Watch this.

JESSE rubs LEAH’S cheek. JANE DOE rubs her cheek.

IRENE

Aw, god, love her. There’s been precious little affection in that kid’s life.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

MAX is sitting at a table with COLLEEN.

MAX

It’s the gory blood scene where Hamlet’s holding up Yorrick’s head except I’m stuck. I don’t know how to finish it.

COLLEEN

Well, let’s have a listen.

MAX

OK. It goes like this. Poor old joke. What a bummer? I knew him from my childhood summer. Now a bonehead doesn’t make a noise and then that’s it.

COLLEEN

Well, what does Hamlet expect? The poor mans six foot underground.

MAX

Aw, that is brilliant. OK, check this out. Poor old joke. What a bummer? I knew him from my childhood summer. Now a bonehead doesn’t make a sound, because he’s six foot underground.

ALF walks over to a table where SALLY and FLYNN sit.

SALLY

I’m glad the two of them have made up. Colleen was becoming unbearable to live with.

ALF gives them two cups. SEB walks out the kitchen.

ALF

Oi, where do you think you’re going?

SEB

School.

ALF

But you haven’t had your breakfast?

SEB

I had some toast upstairs.

FLYNN

Mate, Alf’s just a bit worried about you.

SEB

I’m fine.

FLYNN

It’s just, if you stop eating, your body systems breakdown if it continues, you can have permanent damage?

SEB

Flynn, I’m eating all right. Three square meals a day. My only problem is I’m running late for school. Goodbye.

SEB walks away.

ALF

Well, that went well didn’t it?

ALF walks away.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

SEB stands at his locker. KIRSTY walks over to him.

KIRSTY

Hey, Seb. Can we talk? Please don’t ignore me, all right. This is really awful. I just want to talk to you.

SEB

What about?

KIRSTY

I don’t know. Everything. We used to talk all the time.

SEB

That was before you dumped me.

KIRSTY

Seb, it doesn’t mean that I don’t want to be friends with you, OK. I really miss you.

SEB

Yeah, well, you have Kane for company now, don’t you?

KIRSTY

No, no, I’m just trying to sort out how I feel.

SEB

Well I know how I feel, OK, Kirsty. I love you and nothing is going to change that so this is the deal. You sort yourself out and then you come and talk to me, but I can’t be friends with you, OK, Kirsty. I don’t know how to get back to that.

SEB walks away. SALLY walks up to KIRSTY.

SALLY

Sorry, I couldn’t help overhearing. If you’re not seeing Kane, who was it that you were kissing on the beach yesterday? Now, I’m not judging you, but you can’t keep this a secret much longer. The more you try the worse it’s going to be when the truth finally does come out.

SALLY walks away.

THE SURF CLUB

KIRSTY walks up to KANE who is playing on the games machines.

KIRSTY

I have to talk to you. Don’t turn around, OK.

KANE

I wish we didn’t have to talk like this.

KIRSTY

I spoke to Seb this morning.

KANE

Did you tell him about us?

KIRSTY

No. I hated myself for it. I lied to him. I told him I wasn’t seeing you. I just, I didn’t want to hurt him anymore.

KANE

But babe, he’s going to find out.

KIRSTY

I know. I know.

KANE

Do you want me to talk to him?

KIRSTY

No, no, it has to be me, OK.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

The bell rings. KIRSTY and SEB are in a classroom.

KIRSTY

Hey, meet me after school by the surf club.

They both sit at their desks.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALF and LEAH are there.

LEAH

And then they gave VJ his very own passport. You should have seen him smiling for the camera. It was so cute.

ALF

Not even two years old, ay, and already he’s an international jetsetter. I tell you what. Things have changed since my day.

SEB walks in.

SEB

Hey guys. Em, is there any leftover food from lunch? I’m really hungry.

ALF

Yeah. I’m sure we can rustle something up for you mate. What are you doing home?

SEB

I had a free last period. I’ll be back in am minute. I’m just going to go have a shower and change.

ALF

A shower?

SEB

I won’t be too long.

ALF

No, no. Off you go. I’ll have something waiting for you.

SEB walks into the kitchen.

LEAH

Well, my cooking’s good, but it’s not that good.

ALF

Yeah. No prizes for guessing what’s got into him.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

JANE DOE and IRENE walk in. MAX is there.

MAX

Hey, it’s the mermaid. Remember me? I was the one that found you down at the beach. You ran away.

IRENE

Ah, sweetheart, she doesn’t always understand what people are saying to her.

MAX

What’s her name?

IRENE

Well, we don’t know that, but we’re calling here Jane.

MAX

I’m going to call her Ophelia.

SALLY walks up to them.

IRENE

Ah, Sal, love. Is Paris in his office?

SALLY

Ah, yes. He’s struggling with the new ordering system. He’s going to be very happy to see you.

IRENE

Ah, we’ll sort him out, won’t we toots. Come on. Come on love.

JANE DOE and IRENE walk away.

MAX

Bye Ophelia. Miss Fletcher, can I ask you something?

SALLY

OK.

MAX

Em.

SALLY

Is everything OK Max?

MAX

Is it true that you were adopted?

SALLY

Yeah, it is. Why do you want to know that?

MAX

Well, did you ever feel that you didn’t belong in the family?

SALLY

No, never. I remember Pippa telling me once that mothers have to love their natural children because they gave to birth them, but she didn’t have to love me. She loved me out of choice because I was so special and that’s why she wanted me in her family. You know, I had the happiest childhood that anyone could ever ask for.

MAX

Yeah, but, let’s just say I got a new family, you know, would I still love my dad? You know, I never see him, but I don’t want to forget him.

SALLY

Well, it’s been a long time since my real dad died, but there isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t think about him.

MAX

It’s really awful when nice people die.

SALLY

Yeah, I know. About all you can do is just be there for them when they need you.

MAX

Yeah, but you can save them sometimes, can’t you, like if you give them your bone marrow?

SALLY

You’re a very special person Max and I’m sure Eloise thinks so too.

THE SURF CLUB

KIRSTY sits on a bench. SEB walks towards her.

SEB

Hi. I’m glad you came. I missed you.

KIRSTY

I’m so sorry. I lied to you before.

SEB

What about?

KIRSTY

About Kane and me? I’m still seeing him. I’m so sorry that I didn’t tell you before. I know it was really weak of me, but it was just, there was so many people around. It didn’t feel right talking about.

SEB

It’s OK, it’s OK. I understand. Look, maybe this is a, you missed me and you want us to get back together. That’s what we’re here for, right?

KANE walks up to them.

KANE

No, it’s not.

SEB

What’s he doing here? Get lost OK, this is private.

KIRSTY

Seb, what I’m trying to tell you is that Kane and I are together now.

SEB

Yeah, but, I thought that.

KANE

You’ve got to understand. You and Kirsty are not going to get back together,

KIRSTY

I am so sorry.

KANE

She’s not doing it to hurt you man. It’s just the way things are.

SEB walks away.

KIRSTY

Seb.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

MAX is there. KIRSTY walks in.

MAX

Hey, do you want a drink?

KIRSTY

Yes please.

MAX

Do you remember what we were talking about last night?

KIRSTY

Mmm.

MAX

About family and love and stuff. Well, you were right.

KIRSTY

Was I.

MAX

I’ve been talking to Miss Fletcher about it and well; there is different kinds of love. Some people you love because you want to and then there’s others, well, you just can’t stop loving them and just because you love someone new doesn’t mean that you can’t love someone from the past so I reckon everything’s going to be all right Kirst.

KIRSTY starts to cry and runs out the room.

MAX

What did I day?

THE SURF CLUB

KANE is cleaning the floor. JESSE is there. RICK walks in.

JESSE

See you next time. Ah, g’day Rick. Decided if you’re going to join us for another year mate?

RICK

Looking good Jesse.

JESSE

Good, good.

RICK walks off.

JESSE

I’ll leave you to clean up. I’m away to meet Leah.

KANE

No worries mate.

JESSE

You handled it very well. We need his money. You’re doing a very good job and you should keep it up.

JESSE walks away. RICK walks back through.

RICK

Where’s Jesse? I want to pay my membership.

KANE

Aw, he’s gone home. I don’t know where the forms are, sorry.

RICK

I’ll do all that next week. Just, em, write me a receipt. Five hundred bucks. You don’t have to count it. Just give me a receipt.

KANE hands over the receipt. RICK walks out. KANE counts the money and then puts some in his pocket.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

IRENE and JANE DOE sot at a table. ALF gives them have an ice cream each.

ALF

There you go ladies. It’s OK, it’s OK. I’m going.

IRENE

Thanks love. Like this.

IRENE shows JANE DOE how to suck on the straw.

IRENE

Mmm, yum.

It chills JANE DOE’S teeth. She giggles.

IRENE

Look at you. You have the sweetest smile.

KANE walks in. JANE DOE sees him. JANE DOE then attacks KANE.

IRENE

Jane, Jane.

IRENE tries to break up JANE DOE and KANE. ALF walks up to them.

ALF

Wo, wo, wo, hang on, hang on, hang on. That’s enough of that.

IRENE

It’s OK. No one’s going to hurt you love.

ALF

What the hell brought that one?

KANE
I don’t know? I just got here.

IRENE
Aw, it’s got nothing to do with the Kane love. I’m so sorry. She’s got this terrible habit of attacking strangers for no good reason love. Oh, she’ll be fine once she gets to know you. Hey, hey.

IRENE takes JANE DOE over to the table.

KANE

Who is she?

ALF

Aw, they found her on the beach. Em, no one seems to know much about her. Her real name, where’s she from. Nothing.

KANE

A feral girl. Jesse said she went off at him as well.

ALF

Yeah, yeah, bit of a sad case really. She just talks a whole lot of gobbledygook and Irene seems to be the only one that can get through to her. Flynn reckons she’s lost her memory.

KANE

Yeah. Tell her I wouldn’t hurt a fly.

THE BEACH

SEB is sitting on the beach. FLYNN walks up to him.

FLYNN

I broke up with my first serious girlfriend when I was seventeen. She dumped me for a, would you believe it, it was an iron man competitor. He was the mature type. Twenty. I was no contest. The thing is, I look back at that part of my life now and it just seems really trivial. I mean, me and Sal are so happy and I’m doing something I love, but back then. I just thought my life was over. I just wanted to die. I didn’t though.

SEB

Maybe you didn’t want it bad enough.

FLYNN

Seb.

SEB stands up and walks away.
