Scripts - Episode 3487

THE BEACH

ALF and SEB are exercising on the beach.

ALF

Three, two, one, change. Come on mate. You’ve got to get the circulation going a bit better than that before you get in the water.

SEB

Do you think I should call gramps before I go back to school? Let him know what I’ve done.

ALF

You’re going to have to talk to him sooner or later. I wouldn’t worry too much though. He won’t be too impressed with the way you went about it, but he’d be very happy with the result. Hey. Aw.

ALF holds his back.

SEB

Are you OK?

ALF

Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine. Look, why don’t you get in the water, eh. You seem to be having a bit of trouble with this tough stuff so I’ll give you an early mark.

SEB

Are you sure?

ALF

Yeah. Yeah, sure.

SEB runs in the water.

THE BEACH HOUSE

NICK and IRENE are there.

NICK

I’m full.

IRENE

You’re full when I say you are. Well, I guess it will be head down and bum up for a while love. Must have a bit of catching up to do.

NICK

Probably, yeah.

IRENE

It was just a dream, you know. Nothing more.

NICK

Yeah. I know.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALF and SEB are in the kitchen.

ALF

There you go.

ALF hands SEB a glass of juice.

SEB

I’m not drinking that.

ALF

Mate, it’s wheat grass. It’s full of chlorophyll, one of the building blocks of lie.

SEB

I’m not drinking that.

ALF

It’s lovely stuff.

They walk out the kitchen.

ALF

So, is young Nick back in harness today.

SEB

Yeah.

ALF

You know, that never would have happened in my day, that business of teachers flirting with students.

SEB

Well it was a bit more than flirting. Have you seen the film The Graduate?

ALF

You’re kidding. She didn’t.

SEB

No, they didn’t, but she was leading Nick that way.

NICK walks in.

NICK

Hi.

SEB

Hey.

NICK

Morning Mr. Stewart.

ALF

Ah, g’day young Nick. How are you feeling?

NICK

Good thanks.

SEB

See you later Uncle Alf.

ALF

Yeah, yeah. You blokes look after yourselves won’t you?

NICK and SEB walk out.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

NICK and SEB walk along.

SEB

We must have looked like a couple of idiots jumping around in the sand like that. Lucky no one I knew saw me.

NICK

Yeah, sure.

PARIS walks up to them.

PARIS

Morning.

NICK

Morning Sir.

SEB

Morning Sir.

PARIS

About yesterday. I’m sure you understand how I feel about students flouting with the rules to the school.

SEB

We had good reason.

PARIS

So the end justifies the means, does it?

SEB

It does sometimes, doesn’t it?

PARIS

Do you feel theirs an argument for your case?

SEB

What do you think Sir?

PARIS

I think the punishment should think the crime and as the crime was committed in the name of mateship I’d like you to write your own definition of what mateship means to you.

NICK

An essay on mateship.

PARIS

Well not necessary an essay. How longs a dictionary definition?

SEB

A couple of sentences.

PARIS

Well, if that’s all it takes, that’s all it takes. By tomorrow.

PARIS walks away.

SEB

A couple of lines.

NICK

It’s hardly even a punishment.

SEB

And no Tarangela. It was definitely worth it, hey.

NICK walks away.

THE CARAVAN PARK

DANI and IRENE walk along.

DANI

A wedding ring is symbolic. I mean, the ring is Mira’s, not Scott’s, but he knew what it was when he gave it to me.

IRENE

Well I say, you think maybe he’s trying to tell you something, do you?

DANI

He could be.

IRENE

Well kiddo, only one way to find out. Ask him.

DANI

Oh, yeah. Scott, I was just wondering. Were you going to propose to me?

IRENE

OK, point taken. Maybe it’s better to play it by your ear. I mean, there is no rush.

DANI

Speaking from experience.

They get in IRENE’S car.

IRENE

Oh, love, I was only a kid when I got hit by the big lightening strike with Mud and that didn’t work out.

DANI

It’s OK to get married young if it’s the right person, isn’t it?

IRENE

Well I suppose so, but, you know, why not wait a bit. Get an education. Anyway, enough of the lecture. Down to the nitty gritty. Have you got it on you?

DANI

The ring. Yeah.

IRENE

Call me tragic. I just love a wedding ring.

DANI

I should give it back to him. It is his.

IRENE

Yeah, maybe.

COLLEEN walks up to them.

DANI

You know my mum got married at my age.

IRENE

Really.

COLLEEN

Oh, what a lovely ring. Who’s is it?

DANI

Eh, I suppose it’s Scott.

COLLEEN

Oh, really.

DANI

Well, technically. Not officially.

COLLEEN

Oh, yes, yes. Of course. Mums the word.

IRENE

Right, well, we better get a wiggle or we’ll going to be late.

COLLEEN

Don’t you worry. You can count on me.

IRENE and DANI drive away.

THE SURF CLUB

SCOTT and RHYS walk in.

SCOTT

So, you don’t think Dani would mind?

RHYS

No, no. She’ll be fine. The one thing I do know about my daughter, she’s no gold-digger. She’ll never expect you to pay for something you can’t actually afford. So, em, if moneys the only thing holding you back does that mean you’ve sorted the other stuff out?

SCOTT

Pretty much. I can’t officially get a divorce for another five months, but emotionally it’s all clear, and anyway I don’t want to rush Dani one way or the other.

RHYS

So, you’re not going to be whisking her away from us.

SCOTT

Well, further down the track maybe, but as far as I’m concerned she can set her own timetable.

RHYS

I can’t tell you how glad I am to hear that. I mean, I’m already faced with the prospect of losing Dylan. I really don’t think I could lose two kids at once.

SCOTT

Is Dylan going definitely?

RHYS

Well, he’s getting a lot of pressure from Angie.

SCOTT

Tough call, but I’m sure he’ll do the right thing.

RHYS

The right thing for him or his mum.

SCOTT

You don’t think they’re the same do you?

RHYS

Do you?

SCOTT

For what it’s worth, no, but it’s up to Dylan what he does.

RHYS

Yeah.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALF and COLLEEN walk into the storeroom.

ALF

Yeah, yeah, yeah, and the Easter bunny really exists.

COLLEEN

It’s true I tell you. I saw the ring myself. A bit on the small side for Scott I should have thought, but still.

ALF

Well they hardly know one another.

COLLEEN

Haven’t you ever heard of love at first sight Alf Stewart.

ALF

You’re a romantic old thing, aren’t you?

COLLEEN

Oh, and what’s wrong with that?

ALF

Nothing.

COLLEEN

I wonder why there’s no engagement ring. I suppose young people do things differently these days. It’s a pity we can’t combine Scott’s dinner dance with an engagement party. Heaven knows, they won’t be able to afford one themselves.

ALF

Still, if it’s a secret, it’s probably because they want it that way. Besides, young Scott hasn’t bought any tickets yet. You’re probably right though, you know, it is a shame. Maybe they’ll announce it on the night, if they come.

COLLEEN

Oh, wouldn’t be lovely if they did.

ALEX walks in.

ALEX

If they did what?

ALF

If they did sell all the tickets for young Scott’s benefit.

COLLEEN

Ah, that’s exactly what I said.

ALF

So, mate. What about you? Are you coming on your own or are you bringing someone?

ALEX

Aw, I don’t know. I’ll probably ask Hayley. We’re both a bit desperate and dateless at the moment. See how she feels.

ALEX walks away.

COLLEEN

For a minute there I thought I’d let the cat out of the bag.

ALF

Funny, that’s exactly what I thought about you.

COLLEEN

Poor little girl, with no mother around, even if it isn’t an official engagement party I’m going to do my best to make sure it’s a night she’ll never forget.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

NICK and SEB sit there. GUY walks up to PARIS. PARIS walks away.

GUY

Mr. Burnett. Guy Rossi, Coastal News.

PARIS

What can I do for you?

GUY

I’m doing a story on yesterday events. I understand that a teacher got fired. Kids entrapped her.

PARIS

And where did you hear that?

GUY

Sorry, that’s confidential.

PARIS

Well, so are internal school matters, so unless you want to be assigned playground duty the exits this way?

PARIS walks away. GUY sees SEB and NICK. He walks over to them.

GUY

You guys must know everything that goes on around here.

SEB

What’s it to you?

GUY

What’s the story with that teacher that got fired, Angela Russell.

SEB

Don’t know anything.

NICK

She got what was coming to her.

SEB

Let’s go.

NICK

They should have got rid of her months ago before she started ruining my life.

SEB drags NICK away.

SEB

I’m sorry, but that’s a reporter.

NICK

I know.

SEB

Are you OK? If you need help.

NICK

Seb, I’m fine, OK. I don’t need anything.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

PARIS walks in. IRENE is sitting at a table. He walks over to her.

PARIS

Mind if I join you?

IRENE

Sure. Take a pew.

PARIS

I was going to make small take first, but, eh, the dinner dance. Would you go with me?

IRENE

I’m sorry Paris. I can’t. I’ve invited a friend. Trevor Bardwell.

PARIS

Aw, just a thought. Is there something I should know about, you and Trevor?

IRENE

We’ve just got stuff in common because of Uni, that’s all there is.

PARIS

And anyway it’s none of my business. I’m sorry.

IRENE

He’s just a friend. If he were anything more, I promise you I’d tell you.

PARIS

It’s just really difficult right now Irene, you and me, sitting here trying to pretend that there’s no connection between us anymore. Am I imagining what we had?

IRENE

Of course you’re not.

PARIS

Then why? Now, I know we put everything on hold, but the main reason I took the job here was to give our relationship a chance.

IRENE

Hey, come on. You can’t lay that on me. You didn’t even talk to me about taking that job.

PARIS

But I did and I am here, and I do miss you. Is there anything left between us?

IRENE

Look, it simply wouldn’t work.

PARIS

Why not? I mean, is it something I’ve done. Is it still about Nick?

IRENE

Please Paris. You said you would respect my decision.

PARIS

It would just make it easier to understand if you’d explain why you made it. OK, I guess I’ll see you later then.

THE SURF CLUB

RHYS and GUY are at the counter.

GUY

So, what do you think of the goings on over at the school?

RHYS

What goings on?

GUY

Oh, you must have heard. Teacher fired under bizarre circumstances. Members of the family involved.

RHYS

If you want to know what’s happening over at the school why don’t you ask the principal.

GUY

Well, I tried. No comment.

RHYS

Well, bad luck because I wasn’t there and I don’t know anything.

GUY

OK. If you don’t want to talk about it, fair enough. Incidentally, the kid who was found guilty of assaulting the teacher. It was your daughters boyfriend, wasn’t it?

RHYS

And is that how you use freedom of the press, is it?

GUY

Come on Mr. Sutherland. Even Dani knew what the job entails. You want a fair story, why are you making so hard for me.

RHYS

I don’t care how hard it is for you, I am just trying to make it easy on people I care about, OK.

GUY

OK. Right, message received.

RHYS walks away. ALF walks in.

ALF

Ah, you look like the sort of young bloke who would be interested in buying a ticket to a fundraiser at the club.

GUY

Actually, you’re right, only, make it two.

ALF

Good on you mate. Thanks for your support.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DANI and GUY walk in.

DANI

Guy, what would it cost for you to kill it.

GUY

What? My job.

DANI

No, it wouldn’t.

GUY

I tell you what. I won’t be able to kill the story, but I might be able to write it without mentioning your family.

DANI

You promise me that.

GUY

On one condition. You come with me to the surf club fundraiser.

DANI

That is so corrupt. You conned me into dinner last time. Just write whatever you like, OK.

GUY

I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have put that on you.

DANI

No, you shouldn’t have.

GUY

Em, I leave there names out of it, I promise.

DANI

I’d appreciate that.

GUY

But maybe you could help me on some background, off the record.

DANI

No.

GUY

Aw, come on. I heard the rumours about Angela Russell playing up with a student ages ago. There was a case in junior court. I mean it doesn’t take Einstein.

DANI

Would you let it go.

GUY

Anyway, the person I’m after is really is Angela Russell and I went round to her house and it was all shut up and maybe she and her son have left town.

DANI

Maybe they have. I wouldn’t know, OK. There is the door.

GUY walks out.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

NICK, SEB and another student are playing with a rugby ball. NICK throws the ball away. They all walk away. DANI walks in.

DANI

Em, Seb. You haven’t seen Dylan by any chance, have you?

SEB

No, why?

DANI

It’s something I have to ask him. Thanks.

DANI runs away. IRENE is walking by.

DANI

Irene, you haven’t seen Dylan, by any chance, have you?

IRENE

Aw, darl. I haven’t been here that long. Em, he’s bound to be around somewhere.

DANI

Yeah.

IRENE

Is everything OK?

DANI

Just something I want to ask him.

IRENE

I keep my eyes peeled.

DANI

Thank you.

IRENE walks away. PARIS walks up to DANI.

PARIS

Hello stranger. What are you doing back here?

DANI

Sorry, I know I need permission to be here.

PARIS

It’s not a hanging offence Dani.

DANI

You haven’t seen Dylan, have you?

PARIS

Yeah, sure. About ten minutes ago in my office. I thought we sort of needed to talk over what happened.

DANI

Aw, right.

PARIS

Something wrong?

DANI

Just making a big deal over nothing.

PARIS walks away. DANI looks relieved.

THE SURF CLUB

RHYS and DANI are there.

DANI

Dad, I panicked. I just thought he’d left without telling us.

RHYS

Aw, come on. You know him well enough to know that he wouldn’t do that.

DANI

What if Angie made him do that?

RHYS

I know it’s wrong, but sometimes I think I could just kill her for what’s she’s done to our family.

DANI

Dad, she’s going. Let’s forget about it.

RHYS

Do you reckon you can?

DANI

It’s not worth the space, but if she ever messes with any of us I’m not going to let her get away with it like she has. I’m going to do something about it.

RHYS walks away. HAYLEY walks in.

RHYS

Hey Hayley.

HAYLEY

Hi. Hey, I just got an e-mail from Brodie. Have you heard?

DANI

Heard what?

HAYLEY

She’s going out with Mav again.

DANI

Since when?

HAYLEY

Aw, a couple of weeks.

DANI

Does Alex know?

HAYLEY

Well, if he does, he didn’t let on this morning.

DANI

Well, she better let him know because I wouldn’t want to be the one to tell her.

HAYLEY

Yeah, me neither.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALF and ALEX are behind the counter.

ALF

All right mate. Lets see the colour of your money.

ALEX

What are you talking about? I paid you.

ALF

Yeah, but only for one. I thought you were talking about asking Hayley.

IRENE walks in.

IRENE

Are you taking Hayley to this do?

ALEX

I’m thinking about it. What do you reckon? Should I ask her or is there still something happening between her and Josh?

IRENE

As far as I know darl, it’s all over.

ALEX

Aw, it’s just that we’re friends, we’re both at a loose end right now so.

IRENE

I think it sounds like a great idea. A friend, someone she can have a laugh with. It will be just what she needs.

ALEX

That’s exactly what I was thinking.

SEB and NICK walk in.

SEB

Ah, well, I mean it’s harder to define mateship in two or three lines than it is to do it in an entire essay.

NICK

I haven’t really thought about it.

ALF

Hey boys. Don’t waste your money, eh. Slip upstairs and I’ll get you something that will tie you over till dinnertime.

SEB

Do you want to do that? Have something to eat with Uncle Alf.

IRENE

Sounds like a good idea.

NICK

Ah, no. I’ll just give it a miss.

NICK walks out.

IRENE

What’s eaten him?

SEB

I guess he’s just not hungry. I’ve got to go talk to Uncle Alf about something.

SEB walks into the kitchen.

ALEX

Everything OK?

IRENE

Can I get a coffee darl?

ALF and SEB are in the kitchen.

ALF

So, he’s been acting funny all day.

SEB

And yesterday, I think it’s getting worse. I’ve tried talking to him, but he just cuts me off.

ALF

Maybe we should talk to Irene. See if she’s noticed.

SEB

What about Flynn? He might be able to get Nick some real help. I feel like I’m dobbing him in.

ALF

Yeah, it wouldn’t hurt. Then again, it won’t do any good if Nick doesn’t want help.

SEB

I have to do something. I have to write a definition of mateship for Mr. Burnett. I think the thing about being mate is never letting them do it alone when they’re doing it tough.

ALF

Yeah, well you’ve got that bit right. We better get on with it, eh.

SEB

Tell Irene.

ALF

Yeah.

THE SURF CLUB

DANI and SCOTT are kissing at the kiosk.

DANI

Hello.

SCOTT

What was that for?

DANI

For just being here, because I think you’re probably the best thing in my life at the moment.

SCOTT

Does this mean we’re going public?

DANI

In fact, I think we should go even more public.

SCOTT

Full page ad in the paper. Sky ride.

DANI

No, I think we should go to the dinner dance together. We can go Dutch, as long as you take me.

SCOTT

Do you really want to go?

DANI

It would be nice. Too expensive.

SCOTT

Yeah, it is right now. In another couple of weeks it would be fine. I’ve landed a job.

DANI

Really. Where?

SCOTT

Boatyard. Down the ferry wharf. It’s not the same as working for myself, but it will do for now, till I sort my life out.

DANI

Which you will.

SCOTT

I hope so, anyway. I’m really sorry about the dance, it might have been fun.

DANI

Yeah.

SCOTT

What?

DANI

Just thinking.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

SEB, ALF and IRENE sit at a table.

IRENE

Yeah, well he’s certainly not as chipper as he should be. That woman. Just when you think you’ve beaten here.

ALF

Well, Seb reckons it might be a good idea to try and talk him into seeing Flynn.

IRENE

Yeah, well I could try.

SEB

Maybe we could try together.

IRENE

Aw, darling. Thank you. I would really appreciate that.

ALF

Well I’ll leave you two to sort that out, eh.

ALF walks away. ALEX is at the counter.

ALF

Thought you’d been gone by now.

ALEX

Yeah, I will as soon as Leah gets here.

DANI walks in.

DANI

Em, Alf. Do you still have tickets for the dinner?

ALF

Yeah, yeah. Sure do. I can give you a discount on half a dozen.

DANI

No, just two thanks.

COLLEEN walks out the kitchen.

COLLEEN

Oh, for you and Scott, are they?

DANI

Yeah.

COLLEEN

Aw, that’s lovely. Did you tell her that Scott’s mother bought two tickets as well?

DANI

No.

ALF

Yeah, Beth Hunter bought a couple, yeah.

COLLEEN

Well of course she did. Important occasion like this.

ALF

Are you going to take those out before the poor people starve?

COLLEEN walks away.

ALF

Don’t take any notice of her love.

DANI

I won’t.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SCOTT and DANI walk in.

SCOTT

Guess what? Mum has bought me and her a ticket to the dinner dance.

DANI

Really.

SCOTT

Yeah, she rang about half an hour ago. She hasn’t been out in ages and she thought it might cheer me up, you know, after the fire and everything.

DANI

I think that’s really nice of her.

SCOTT

Well, I feel awful, especially after telling you I couldn’t go with you.

DANI

Don’t feel awful. I think it’s a good thing.

SCOTT

How?

DANI

Well I think I can score some tickets which means that we’ll actually be able to see each other anyway at the dance.

SCOTT

So, it’s worked out really well. We both get to go without paying.

DANI

Yeah.

DANI and SCOTT kiss.

THE PALACE

HAYLEY and ALEX are there.

HAYLEY

So, we had this guy in and he said he wasn’t buying a new dinner jacket for the dance and that he wanted to lose five kilos in just one session.

ALEX

Did he?

HAYLEY

He tried. I was exhausted just watching him.

ALEX

Well I won’t have to worry about looking good. For now I don’t have anyone to take.

HAYLEY

Aw, there must be someone?

ALEX

Well if Brodie was here I’d take her of course.

HAYLEY

Yeah.

ALEX

But she’s not, and things change, people move on.

HAYLEY

Right.

ALEX

Well I know I’ve moved on anyway, and as for Brodie she’s in Italy , land of la dolce vita. She’s not exactly going to be thinking about the fish in Yabbie Creek, is she?

HAYLEY

No.

ALEX

I’ve just got to accept things, I guess. Get on with your life.

HAYLEY

Hey, I thought you’d be spitting. You’re a lot cooler about it than I was when Noah started going out with Anna.

ALEX

What’s that got to do with it?

HAYLEY

Well you’re in the same position that I was.

ALEX

Am I? How?

HAYLEY

Have I put my foot in it?

ALEX

I don’t know Hayley? Have you?

HAYLEY

Brodie, she’s started going out with Mav again.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE and SEB are there.

IRENE

Aw, god save us. I hope he’s not too much longer. I’ve got to study for this Uni I’m supposed to go to.

SEB

Do you want to put it off?

IRENE

No, love. I think the sooner we get it done, you know.

NICK walks in with his skateboard.

IRENE

Hi sweetheart. We were wondering where you’d got to.

NICK

Stupid wheel. Keeps coming loose.

IRENE

Ah, look Nick. Don’t bite our heads off, but we’re a little bit worried about you.

NICK

Yeah.

SEB

Yeah, it’s not that I don’t think you’ve got anything to be angry about, just maybe if you talk to Flynn.

IRENE

Yeah.

NICK

It’s just cheap junk, it’s cheap junk.

IRENE

Or if you didn’t want to talk to Flynn you could always talk to Noah.

NICK

There’s nothing wrong with me.

IRENE

Oh, come on love. look, we’re on your side. Do you think we’d be talking to you like if we weren’t?

NICK

Aw, look I said there’s nothing wrong.

NICK throws the skateboard at the TV, breaking the TV in the process.
