Scripts - Episode 3483

THE BEACH

ANGIE and FLYNN are running along the beach in opposite directions. They stop running.

FLYNN

I heard a rumour you’re leaving town.

ANGIE

Ah, sorry to disappoint you, but I’m not going anywhere.

FLYNN

Really. Not much here for you now. No blood ties.

ANGIE

Who told you?

FLYNN

Might be the best solution for everyone if you did go. You know, you could make a fresh start.

ANGIE

I’m not going anywhere without my son. So, I guess you and Sally think you can use this to force me out.

FLYNN

Sally doesn’t know anything and even if she did.

ANGIE

She wouldn’t use it. How honourable of her. What about you Flynn? Would you go to Rhys? Tell him the truth about his only son. I don’t think so. It would break his heart so I guess I will be seeing you around.

FLYNN and ANGIE continue running in opposite directions. ANGIE then stops and watches FLYNN.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

KIRSTY and JADE are sitting at the table. DANI is in the kitchen.

JADE

We could do it in the science block if we can get Angie there.

KIRSTY

Yeah, true, but that means we’ll have to shoot from behind the trees.

JADE

Probably.

KIRSTY

What are we going to do about sound and stuff? I mean, we have to talk to Seb about mikes.

DYLAN walks in and opens the fridge.

DYLAN

Sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt.

JADE

Aw, you’re not.

KIRSTY

No, it’s just girl talk. How are you feeling?

DYLAN

Yeah, better, thanks. Em, milk?

KIRSTY

Ah, the milk’s here. Dylan, the milk’s here.

DYLAN

Ah, thanks.

KIRSTY

Are you OK?

DYLAN

Yeah.

RHYS walks in.

RHYS

I thought you were having a lie in.

DYLAN

Yeah, yeah, I woke up early.

RHYS

Well don’t go overdoing it, OK.

DANI

Aren’t you having breakfast?

RHYS

Eh, I’ll grab something there. Hey, do you want a lift.

KIRSTY

Ah, yeah, that would be cool. We can talk about it on the way there.

JADE

Yeah.

RHYS, JADE and KIRSTY leave.

DANI

Dylan.

DYLAN

Yeah, I know. I’ve been awake all night trying to work out what to say to him.

DANI

You can’t let him find out from someone else.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

KIRSTY, SEB and JADE walk in.

KIRSTY

We should, em, check the media room for mikes. They’ll probably have one.

SEB

Maybe.

IRENE is there.

IRENE

Seb. How’s life with the big fella?

KIRSTY

Yeah, actually Seb needs you to go over there and cook for them.

SEB

Yeah, Alf’s on a bit of a health streak. I think he plans of dying of absolute nothing in about hundred years time.

JADE

Look how’s coming?

ANGIE walks over to them.

ANGIE

Morning everyone. How’s Nick settling into Yabbie Creek High. I imagine he’s appreciating the chance of a fresh start.

ANGIE walks away.

JADE

He’s so smug.

IRENE

Oh, don’t you worry love. I haven’t given up on that lawyer fellow. He’ll get Nick reinstated. You mark my words.

SEB

Yeah, but how long is that going to take?

IRENE

We’ll get there darl. We’ll get there.

IRENE walks away. JADE, SEB and KIRSTY walk across to their lockers.

KIRSTY

Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. Mrs Russell will be onto anything that we do.

SEB

Especially if she thinks it’s a set-up.

JADE

Well, what do we do then?

SEB

Well we have to get her somewhere she is willing to her guard down.

KIRSTY

The bathroom.

JADE

You’re not helping.

KIRSTY

Oh, like I was serious.

SEB

Guys, can we just think about this.

JADE

I still reckon we should do it somewhere at the school.

SEB

So.

JADE

Actually.

THE COASTAL NEWS OFFICE

DANI and GUY are there.

GUY

Great. Loving your work.

DANI

Is it OK?

GUY

It’s really evocative if it is true about the arsons. Do you know who he is or is that just the sell?

DANI

You’ll see.

GUY

Well, if there’s proof there’s a solid series of articles in this.

JANIS, the deputy editor, walks out his office.

GUY

Aw, Janis, this is Dani Sutherland. You should see the story that she’s written.

JANIS

A ha Dani. I’m Janis Tourme, deputy editor.

DANI

Hi.

JANIS

Frank’s away at the moment.

GUY

He’s away on assignment.

JANIS

Dan, can I have a quick word with you?

DANI and JANIS walk into the office.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

ANGIE is writing on the board. SEB, KIRSTY and JADE are in the class. JADE is whispering to SEB. ANGIE turns around to face the class.

ANGIE

Who’s whispering? Jade, would you like to take over?

JADE

No, I’m fine thanks.

ANGIE

Good. Now for those of you interested in glowing marks.

JADE whispers to SEB.

ANGIE

I know I’ve had enough and I’m quite sure the class is not going to be interested in making up time thanks to you.

SEB

Jade’s just wondering if she should go get her asthma stuff, Mrs Russell.

ANGIE

Well if you need it, go get it. You’ve got five minutes.

JADE walks out the class.

THE COASTAL NEWS OFFICE

DANI and JANIS are in the office.

DANI

You can’t just sack me on one complaint.

JANIS

I never said it was one complaint.

DANI

OK, then, who were they?

JANIS

That’s not for me to say. I’m just carrying out Frank’s instructions, all right.

DANI

You have to give me warning.

JANIS

For the weather and ovicts girl, I don’t think so.

DANI

This is unbelievable. You’ve given me no plausible explanation or reason. What about the article I’ve just written?

DANI walks out the office. GUY is standing at the door. He walks in.

JANIS

You’d think she’d be more professional about it. It is a business after all.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

JADE is looking in her locker. ANGIE walks up to her. There is a video camera filming them.

ANGIE

What’s going on? It’s been five minutes.

JADE

I’m just trying to catch my breath.

ANGIE

Well perhaps I can speed things up.

JADE

Well I can’t go back in. I don’t want to get upset in front of everyone about Nick.

ANGIE

Oh, you poor thing. We’ll put you at the back of the class where you will have some privacy. Come on.

JADE

You couldn’t care less, could you?

ANGIE

I beg your pardon.

JADE

I just don’t understand how it all happened.

ANGIE

It.

JADE

Everything. Nick really thought you liked him.

ANGIE

I did, as a student whom I hoped I could help.

JADE

More than that. I mean, he was just so confused. He’s getting worse.

ANGIE

He’s confused about me. Come on.

JADE

He just doesn’t know hot it turned out so wrong? He’s heartbroken. He hasn’t said much to me.

ANGIE

Perhaps, I could explain. Nick is a poor unfortunate boy who mistook encouragement for a come on, but we can sit down and talk about this all you like with Mr. Burnett and we’ll work out your detention.

JADE

What?

ANGIE

For wasting fifteen minutes of class time. How’s your breathing now?

ANGIE walks away. JADE closes her locker.

THE SURF CLUB

SEB, KIRSTY and JADE are there.

JADE

Angie’s never going to say anything, at school.

SEB

Not just school. What we need to.

MAX walks up to them.

MAX

Why did you all stop talking?

KIRSTY

Because we are talking about you.

MAX

Yeah, sure. Hey, I forgot my money so could I borrow some? Fine, I’ll just sit here and inspect the view.

KIRSTY

OK, fine, yes you may, but Max, I want it back, OK.

MAX

You already owe me five bucks.

MAX walks away.

JADE

So, plan B.

SEB

We’re not going to be able to get Angie to talk to us, period. It’s like Uncle Alf says. You need the right bait.

KIRSTY

Well, what’s that?

SEB

Nick.

JADE

No, we can’t.

SEB

I can’t think of anything else that’s going to get her.

JADE

It’s not fair. It’s too much.

SEB

All we can do is ask him.

DYLAN and RHYS are at the counter.

RHYS

Ah, thank you for helping out today. It’s been great having you here. How are you travelling? You not too tired?

DYLAN

No, I’m fine. I’d actually like to talk to you about something.

ALF and LEAH walk in.

ALF

Rhys.

RHYS

Alf.

LEAH

Guess who’s back in the hot seat?

RHYS

You got reinstated.

ALF

Yep. Unanimous.

RHYS

Well done mate.

ALF

Thanks. You got time for a cup of coffee to celebrate. There’s a few things we need to talk about.

RHYS

Well if you don’t mind talking while I work.

ALF

No, I’m fine.

RHYS

Ah, are you OK or?

DYLAN

Just whenever.

DYLAN walks out.

NORTHERN DISTRICTS UNIVERSITY

DANI is running along in her high heels. She takes one off and throws it to the ground. She starts crying. JOSH walks up to her.

JOSH

Bad shoe.

DANI

No, it’s fine. I’m fine.

JOSH

Obviously, here.

DANI

Ah, Josh.

DANI and JOSH are sitting down. JOSH is trying to fix DANI’S shoe.

JOSH

What did you say who complained?

DANI

Apparently, it’s private.

JOSH

Well did they tell you for which article it was?

DANI

Nope. They even said that I had to be more professional about being sacked.

JOSH

Aw. Well you know what, there’s always mum. She would give you a job at the drop of a hat.

DANI

Thank you. I think you’ve done plenty after what I said to you.

JOSH

Thanks. Hey, you know I’m charging for this, don’t you?

DANI

I’m sorry about Hayley.

JOSH

Right, don’t go overboard.

DANI

No, I’m not. I’m just trying to apologise for accusing you. I’m not saying the article was going to work out.

JOSH

Right.

DANI

I know I’m not making sense because I’m mad, but, I didn’t want you to get hurt, OK.

JOSH

OK, there you go.

DANI

Good job.

JOSH

Yeah.

JOSH hands DANI the shoe. It breaks.

JOSH

Aw, it looked good for a moment, didn’t it?

DANI

What do you know about shoes, huh?

JOSH

OK, I won’t charge you this time.

DANI

Ah, yeah, thank you.

THE COASTAL NEWS OFFICE

JOSH and JANIS are there.

JOSH

But she’s a really good journalist.

JANIS

Good journalists don’t get people complaining.

JOSH

Well, isn’t that exactly what they do? Now, who was it?

JANIS

Aw, well if I didn’t tell her I’m certainly not telling you. As I said, it’s confidential. Now, I’ve got some calls to make?

JOSH

So you’re not even going to talk to me about it.

JANIS

I’m sorry, but it’s a very busy time.

JOSH goes to leave and then turns back.

JOSH

OK, seen as you’ve been so reasonable so far, don’t send me any more invoices for the gym advertising.

JANIS

Hang on.

JOSH

No, no, you’re way to busy to talk and you know what else. I know some other people who advertise with you. They’re good friends of mine. Perhaps they’ll lighten your workload a bit too.

JANIS

This isn’t the way to go.

JOSH

OK, say I was to write a name on a piece of paper.

JANIS

And I didn’t deny it. This is hardly Watergate.

JOSH

It’s not, it’s about respect. Now, let’s start again, shall we.

JOSH picks up a piece of paper and a pen.

THE SURF CLUB

DYLAN and RHYS are outside. RHYS is cleaning a table.

RHYS

Hey mate. You can go home if you like. You’ve done enough for one day.

DYLAN

Dad, I have to tell you something.

RHYS

Yeah, I’m listening.

DYLAN

Dad, when.

RHYS

I hate it when they have sauce fights.

DYLAN

Rhys.

DYLAN and RHYS walk across to the fence.

RHYS

What is it son?

DYLAN

When I, when I first met Kirsty and I got to know your family I was jealous in a way because of how good it was.

RHYS

Yeah, well, that’s all behind us now, eh.

DYLAN

I just want to say I know how lucky I am to have been a part of it.

RHYS

What’s the matter mate?

DYLAN

You know, at the hospital when they did the blood tests.

RHYS

Yeah.

DYLAN

They said I’ve got this really rare blood type that both my parents have to match.

RHYS

I don’t think I’m following you.

DYLAN

Yours didn’t match. I’ve got my fathers blood type, my biological father. You’re not my dad. I don’t know who he is. I love you, but you’re not my dad.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

ANGIE is in a class with SEB, KIRSTY and JADE.

ANGIE

So the borders are arbitrary, a legacy of colonialism which results in conflict as have all.

RHYS walks in.

RHYS

Out here.

ANGIE

What?

RHYS

You heard.

ANGIE

Do you mind?

RHYS

Now.

RHYS and ANGIE walk out the class.

RHYS

How could you?

ANGIE

I didn’t know.

RHYS

Aw, Angela, just stop lying.

ANGIE

Rhys, be quiet. Let’s talk about this.

RHYS

Even if you did this to get at me. I mean how could you do it to Dylan, to Dylan? He is a kid Angela and he’s just a kid.

ANGIE

Rhys, please. I didn’t know.

RHYS

Did he know?

ANGIE

No, neither of us knew.

RHYS

You said he was mine. You came to me, to my family. You said he was mine.

ANGIE

I am.

RHYS

You destroyed my family Angela, but you said he was my boy and you just can’t taken that back.

ANGIE

I am so sorry. It happened before you. There was another man. We had broken up. I don’t know what I can do to make you forgive me.

RHYS

What are you? How could you do this to Dylan?

ANGIE

I loved him. I loved you.

RHYS

There is nothing, nothing between us and I just. I don’t know where you are.

RHYS walks away. ANGIE walks back into the class. She is crying.

ANGIE

The borders are arbitrary which leads to colonialism.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

JOSH knocks on the door. DANI is there.

DANI

Hey.

JOSH

Hi.

DANI

Come in.

JOSH

Thanks. It’s quite here. Where is everyone?

DANI

Ah, it’s just me. Want anything?

JOSH

No, I’m all right. I just wanted to say, what you said about Hayley really meant a lot.

DANI

I think I got a few things wrong lately.

JOSH

I didn’t realise I’d left such a bad impression.

DANI

No, it’s just. I think it’s a bunch of things, Hayley, what you did to Scott. I was forgetting all the good things. I want to say sorry about what I said about the boatshed.

JOSH

Yeah, well, I’m not a criminal.

DANI

I know you’re not. We friends?

JOSH

Yeah. Aw, good one. Well, that depends. It depends on whether you’d be angry at me for going to see your editor or not.

DANI

She’s not my editor.

JOSH

Yeah, well, she could be if you call her.

DANI

What? What did you say?

JOSH

Well I threatened to burn the place down. Oh, come on, I’m kidding. No, no, no, I just reasoned with her and it turns out that it’s Angie that’s made the call.

DANI

Aw, surprise, surprise. Don’t tell me she had an affair with the guy who owns the paper?

JOSH

No, she taught one of their daughters. So, the job is still yours if you want it.

DANI

I don’t want to work for Frank or Janis. Let Angie think she’s won for a second.

JOSH

Is there anything that woman touches that she doesn’t wreck.

DANI

Something’s have turned out all right.

THE BEACH HOUSE

RHYS and IRENE are there. RHYS is sitting on the step up to NICK’S bedroom.

RHYS

I don’t know what to do Irene. I’m worried about the kids.

IRENE

And they love you darl.

RHYS

How can they? I’m as bad as her. I really lost it today. I just went. Shelley, all that pain for nothing. For some mad lie.

IRENE

But it’s Dylan’s fault, love.

RHYS

I know, but if I hadn’t had a son, you know, maybe, maybe she’s still be here. I know I can’t go back and fix what happened, but maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.

IRENE

There’s no answer that.

RHYS

Kirsty, I mean, what sense does she make out of all this?

IRENE

Rhys, love, you’ve got to deal with the here and now, you know and what’s going to happen to Dylan. Look, the girls have accepted him as a brother; you’ve taken him on as a son. Biological father, what is that? It’s the love that matters, darl. At the end of that day, that’s all that matters.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DYLAN and DANI are sitting on the couch.

DANI

He didn’t say where he was going?

DYLAN

No, he didn’t say anything. He just left.

DANI

It’s OK. We’ll be fine. We’re just going to have to wait a few hours, OK.

MAX, JADE, KIRSTY and SEB walk in. DYLAN and DANI walk across to them.

DYLAN

Did, em, did Rhys tell you?

MAX

The whole school knows.

SEB

He dragged her out of class screaming.

DYLAN

Great.

MAX

So, we’re not cousins.

DYLAN

No.

KIRSTY

Did you know?

DYLAN

No, I had no idea.

JADE

When did you find out?

DYLAN

Just a couple of days ago.

JADE

Not before? Not when you first came?

DANI

It was after the blood test.

KIRSTY

So, what, you knew?

DANI

No, I worked it out. There was problems with the blood transfusion.

JADE

And neither of you told us after everything that’s.

KIRSTY walks out and SEB follows her.

DYLAN

I should go.

MAX

Please don’t.

DYLAN

Look, this isn’t going to work. I’ve wrecked everything.

DYLAN goes upstairs. SEB and KIRSTY are on the veranda.

SEB

What are you thinking?

KIRSTY

That I’d kill Angie if I saw her.

SEB

This has changed things.

KIRSTY

It changes everything.

SEB

I know how you felt about Dylan, everybody does. Is that what you mean, that you still?

KIRSTY

Honestly.

SEB

Yeah.

KIRSTY

Maybe, maybe, I don’t know.

SEB

If that’s how you feel. I’m not going to stand in your way.

SEB walks back inside shutting the door behind him. DANI, MAX, KIRSTY and JADE sit at the table.

JADE

Maybe we should bring him down.

MAX

I’ll go and get him.

KIRSTY

No, don’t. Just leave him.

DANI

Just let him think for a while, OK.

RHYS walks in.

RHYS

You heard. I’m sorry about what happened at the school. I know it’s not enough just to say I’m sorry. Where’s Dylan?

JADE

He’s upstairs.

MAX

Please don’t kick him out.

RHYS

Mate, I’m not about to kick anyone out. We all need to have a big talk. See how everyone feels and then, em; then we’ll make some decisions.

There are suitcases are at the door.

RHYS

What’s this?

DANI

Dylan feels responsible.

DYLAN walks in.

RHYS

Made some decisions have you.

DYLAN

I would never have come here I thought any of this was going to happen.

RHYS

Where are you going?

DYLAN

Drop-in centre.

RHYS stops DYLAN, picks up a suitcase and then carries the suitcase up the stairs. DYLAN follows him out into the hall. JADE, MAX, DANI and KIRSTY all then follow them through to the hall.
