Scripts - Episode 3434

SUMMER BAY HIGH

DON and SEB are there. The building is alight.

SEB

What happened?

DON

I don’t know Seb.

TIM, a fireman walks up to them.

TIM

Mr. Fisher.

DON

How much damage is there?

TIM

We managed to contain it to your office and admin area.

DON

Well that’s something I suppose.

SEB

You know how it started?

TIM

Given the speed and intensity of the flames and the fact that it was the principal’s office.

SEB

You think it was deliberate.

TIM

I can’t say until we’ve done a thorough investigation. Just hope you’ve got copies of those files.

THE SURF CLUB

JESSE is in the gym. ANGIE walks in.

ANGIE

I’m absolutely burning for a work out. Do you want to swap me on the bench press?

JESSE

You don’t need my help.

ANGIE

No, but I do need something.

JESSE

I told you Angie. It’s over.

ANGIE

I think it’s really sweet the way you’re saving yourself, but I’d hate to see you wasting your time.

JESSE

I’m not.

ANGIE

Jesse. You and Leah have come from different worlds. The chances of her committing to someone with your past.

JESSE

You wouldn’t know the first thing about Leah so I think you should just leave it.

JOSH and HAYLEY walk in.

ANGIE

Hey. I’d love to know your secret. The way you get these boys to follow you around. Must be a hidden talent.

ANGIE walks out.

HAYLEY

She’s getting at me again.

JESSE

Just ignore her.

JOSH

We just came around to pick up the quarterly figures. Are they ready?

JESSE

I haven’t actually started them yet.

JOSH

But I need them by tomorrow.

JESSE

Well you could have told me that.

JOSH

I shouldn’t have to Jesse. It’s standard practise.

HAYLEY

Yeah, but we haven’t been open  long enough to get into a routine yet.

JOSH

Sorry mate. It’s just that I don’t like the books to get behind. I was payers to work on system, yeah.

JESSE

Yeah. Right.

JOSH

Well I’ll have the books by tomorrow then.

JESSE

I’ll see what I can do.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

The firemen put the hoses in the machine. DON and SEB walk along.

SEB

I just don’t understand why anyone would do this. It must be some kind of student with a grudge.

DON

Well let’s not jump to conclusions. For all we know it could still be an accident. How’s it looking?

They walk up to TIM.

TIM

We’re sorry Mr. Fisher. I’m afraid there’s not very much that was salvageable. Once that fire got into the open drawer of the cabinet all your files would have burnt pretty quick.

DON

Well thanks. Thank you very much.

TIM walks away.

SEB

I thought you locked your filing cabinet.

DON

Usually yes.

SEB

Do you have copies of the files on computer?

DON

Some, but I doubt that any of it can be salvaged and there was one file that was originals.

SEB

If it was student records maybe one of the kids.

DON

No, no, it wasn’t.

SEB

So you think however did this was trying to destroy this file?

DON

Well, until the investigation is completed I’m not sure what to think.

THE PALACE

NOAH sits in the dark. JOSH and HAYLEY walk in.

HAYLEY

Nick was too excited.

JOSH

Aw, Hayls, next time you need something like this moved call the professional’s. Aw, something smells good.

HAYLEY

Yeah.

HAYLEY switches the lights on.

HAYLEY

What are you doing sitting here in dark?

NOAH

I need to talk to Hayley.

HAYLEY

What’s going on?

NOAH

That’s what I wanted to ask you.

HAYLEY

Well, I couldn’t manage this on my own so Josh gave me a hand.

NOAH

That’s convenient, wasn’t it? He’s always there when you need him.

JOSH

Mate, that’s really out of line. You guys obviously need to talk.

JOSH walks out.

HAYLEY

Do you have to be that rude?

NOAH

Every time I turn around you two are together.

HAYLEY

You’re making this into something it’s not. I mean, we hang out sometimes and he offered to give me hand. That’s all there is to it.

NOAH

Well why do I feel weird when I know you two have been alone together?

HAYLEY

I don’t know. I guess you’ve just been spending so much time at work.

NOAH

Don’t turn this back around on me, OK. Why can’t you just be honest with me and tell me what’s going on? I feel like I’m losing you.

HAYLEY

Did you do all this for me?

NOAH

What do you think?

HAYLEY

Well, I wish I’d known.

NOAH

You weren’t home.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well we never have dinner this early.

NOAH

Maybe I just wanted to spend some quality time with you afterwards.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well we can heat it up.

NOAH

No, you can. I’ve lost my appetite.

NOAH walks out.

SALLY’S HOUSE

FLYNN, DON and SALLY are there.

FLYNN

You think Angie lit the fire.

DON

I can’t say for sure, of course, but there was incriminating evidence against here in the office that might have worried her.

FLYNN

Well is there a chance it could be anyone else.

DON

Well I didn’t come to this conclusion lightly, but you didn’t see her reaction when I told her that I couldn’t recommend her as principal.

SALLY

Setting fire to the school. I want to think that she’s capable of that.

FLYNN

Neither do I, but alarm bells go off every time I see. I think we could be dealing with a personality disorder.

SALLY

That’s a bit extreme, isn’t it?

FLYNN

Think about it. Think about her behaviour since she’s been here.

SALLY

Yeah.

DON

Well unfortunately, unless the fire brigade come up with some solid evidence there’s nothing we can do about it anyway.

FLYNN

And if it was Angie, she would have covered her tracks pretty well.

THE PALACE

HAYLEY sits at the bottom of the stairs. NOAH makes a bed on the couch.

HAYLEY

Noah, you don’t have to do this. I want to work this out.

NOAH

Do you? What happened to us? We’ve always been able to be straight with each other, even when it’s hard to tell each other.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I want to be honest with you.

NOAH

What’s stopping you? Is something going on with Josh?

HAYLEY

No. It’s just last week, I don’t know how it happened or why.

NOAH

Go Hails.

HAYLEY

It was nothing. It was one kiss. I’m sorry. I’m just so sorry. It didn’t mean anything. It just happened.

NOAH

Yeah, but you let it.

HAYLEY

No.

NOAH

You told him to stop. Did you push him away? Did you let him know that you didn’t want it to happen.

HAYLEY

I did, after.

NOAH

After.

HAYLEY

I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.

NOAH

Yeah, so am I. Why didn’t you tell me about this last week?

HAYLEY

Well, I didn’t want to hurt you.

NOAH

Great. So you just kept me wondering what I’ve done wrong instead.

HAYLEY

It doesn’t change the way I feel about you.

NOAH

I’m not so sure I feel the same way.

NOAH walks out.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

KIRSTY and RHYS are there.

RHYS

I’ve got to pick up some supplies from Yabbie Creek, but I think I should be in about eleven.

KIRSTY

OK. Cool.

ANGIE walks in.

KIRSTY

You’ve got a visitor.

KIRSTY walks out.

ANGIE

I guess I can’t expect anymore at this stage. Your paper.

RHYS

Thank you.

ANGIE

How are the girls?

RHYS

Em, well they’re confused and angry. All this time that Shelley was away, you know, they were still hoping that things would work themselves out. So was I. It’s like they’ve lost their mum twice.

ANGIE

I can’t understand anyone hurting their children like that. After all the difficult times I’ve been through with Dylan I would never abandon him.

RHYS

Well, it’s more like a case of the kids not wanting to abandon me.

ANGIE

How are you managing?

RHYS

I’m OK, you know, as long as I’m cleaning up, cooking, running the house. Then I stop. Think about what’s going on.

ANGIE

You’re being incredibly strong. This is a really difficult thing you’re going through. If there’s anything I can do. If you need a friend, to talk or, you can always come to me.

ANIGE walks out.

THE PALACE

HAYLEY walks down the stairs. She then walks into the kitchen. JOSH is there.

HAYLEY

Do you know what time Noah left?

JOSH

Pretty early. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to cause such a huge rift between you guys.

HAYLEY

What did you think he’d do when he found out? Hey, this is just a game to you, isn’t it?

JOSH

You really think that kissing you is game. Hayley, I’ve wanted something to happen between us for a long time and if you’re honest, I’d say you did to. You didn’t try and stop me.

HAYLEY

Yeah, you caught me off guard.

JOSH

Maybe, but you could have pulled away. You kissed me back. I know you don’t want to hurt Noah, but we had a connection between us. Tell me we didn’t and I’ll pull it now.

HAYLEY

Josh, I don’t need anymore complications.

JOSH

Hayley, that doesn’t answer my question.

HAYLEY

Josh, I can’t do this OK.

JOSH

I’ve got to go to work. Do you want a lift?

HAYLEY

No thanks.

JOSH walks out.

THE SURF CLUB

NOAH takes a shower. JOSH walks up to him.

JOSH

A listen mate. I’m sure we can work this out.

NOAH punches JOSH and then walks away.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

FLYNN walks in. ANGIE is there.

FLYNN

Hey. Why weren’t you down the beach this morning?

ANGIE

I was. Very early.

FLYNN

Right. Did you hear about the fire at the school?

ANGIE

Yes. Poor Don. What a thing to be faced with this close to his retirement. It’s going to be a big job for his replacement.

FLYNN

It will be.

ANGIE

Who would do such a thing?

FLYNN

Well maybe it was accidental.

ANGIE

The week before school goes back.

FLYNN

Do you think the kids did it?

ANGIE

I don’t think we’ll never know who it was. Anyway, I’ve got places to go, people to see. I’ll see you later.

ANGIE walks out.

THE SURF CLUB

KIRSTY treats a cut on NOAH’S hand. JESSE watches them.

KIRSTY

What did you hit man? A tree.

NOAH

You don’t want to know.

JESSE

It looks nasty mate. I’d hate to see the other guy.

KIRSTY

This is going to need a bandage. Here. Hold on to that. I’ll get the first aid kit or something. Just hold on a second.

JESSE

It’s all right. I’ve got a kit in the gym. Come on mate.

NOAH

Thanks.

HAYLEY walks in.

HAYLEY

Hey, are you all right?

JESSE is treating NOAH in the gym.

NOAH

I can’t believe I did that. You know, I want to be a councillor. I should know that’s not the way to deal with problems.

JESSE

You can’t help human instinct. If it makes you feel any better you’re not the first one to want to smack Josh West.

NOAH

No. I thought if anyone was going to move in on Hayley it would be you.

JESSE

I was bit lonely when I first came to town, but I not going to move on a mate missus. Josh, on the other hand, thinks he can take what he wants.

NOAH

Yeah. I wish it was that simple. Hayley’s not exactly a pushover.

JESSE

No, but she’s a nice girl. She’s free and mean and she likes to talk to people and she can’t help if guys get the wrong idea.

NOAH

It’s more than that.

JESSE

I thought you guys were rock solid.

NOAH

So did I. I don’t know.

JESSE

You’ll sort it out mate.

NOAH

That’s the thing. After what’s happened, I don’t know if I want to.

NOAH walks out the gym. He sees HAYLEY. He then walks out the surf club.

SALLY’S HOUSE

FLYNN and SALLY are there.

SALLY

You are look especially gorgeous this morning.

SALLY kisses FLYNN.

FLYNN

I just saw Angie down at the diner earlier. I think Don’s instincts right about the fire.

SALLY

I honestly don’t know. If she was the desperate to get the file why didn’t she just take it.

FLYNN

Well, that would be too obvious.

SALLY

But why would you set fire to the office when the fire could get totally out of control and destroy the whole school? You know, there are a few things about Angie. She’s a good teacher and she loves her job, but just doesn’t add up.

FLYNN

How ambitious is she?

SALLY

Very. She doesn’t like to lose.

FLYNN

So she would be pretty keen to take over as principal when Don left.

SALLY

Yeah, I guess so, but he recommended me.

FLYNN

That’s what I’m worried about. Don’t you think it’s a little bit of a coincidence that the day that she fins out that you’re taking over as principal the place gets torched.

SALLY

I don’t see how lighting a fire would help her.

FLYNN

Maybe not, but, you know, if she thinks that you’re standing in her way of what she wants. I just want you to be really careful around her, OK.

THE SURF CLUB

HAYLEY and JESSE are in the gym.

HAYLEY

Is Noah all right?

JESSE

His hand is, but the rest of him.

HAYLEY

What did he do?

JOSH walks in holding his lip.

HAYLEY

Aw, no.

JOSH

I’m all right. Have you got those figures I asked for?

JESSE

Yeah, I’ll bring them down to you in a sec.

JOSH walks out.

HAYLEY

I can’t believe Noah.

JESSE

Don’t be too hard on him Hayls.

HAYLEY

Did he tell you what happened?

JESSE

Not exactly, but it’s pretty obvious that it’s got something to do with you and Josh.

HAYLEY

It was just one kiss and it’s not like I ask for it.

JESSE

And you think that makes it OK. Josh is supposed to be his mate. Noah trusted him and he trusted you.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well, sometimes things just happen. I mean, you of all people should know what that’s like. You were with Angie when you were in love with Leah.

JESSE

That is very different. You guys are committed. I just can’t believe you’d do something like this Hayls.

HAYLEY

Yeah, I know, but there’s nothing I can do about it now, is there?

JESSE walks out the gym. JOSH is there.

JOSH

Yeah, all right. Go on. Say it.

JESSE

If I told you what I really thought about you, you’d fire me.

JOSH

Whatever you might think Jesse, I really care for Hayley.

JESSE

Well you’ve got a very strange way of showing it. When you really care about someone, it’s not just about what you want. It’s about respecting where the other persons at, but you wouldn’t know much about that, would you?

JESSE walks out.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

NOAH and DYLAN are sitting on the couch.

NOAH

So, you’ve settled back in OK?

DYLAN

Yeah, yeah. Actually Angie’s been great. I mean, obviously we just needed a break from each other.

NOAH

Oh, that’s good you’ve got things sorted out, but, you know, if you need some space, you can just hang here.

DYLAN

Cheers.

SALLY and FLYNN are in the office. SALLY is on the phone.

SALLY

Yep, that’s fine. I’ll get him to call you back as soon as he can.

All right.

Bye.

SALLY puts the phone down.

SALLY

It’s Richard from the board.

FLYNN

Aw, I’ll add it to the pile.

SALLY

He might have some news on Shelley’s replacement.

FLYNN

Aw, that would be good. Then you wouldn’t have to be here helping out on your holidays.

SALLY

Aw. I don’t mind. As long as we get to see each other. Hey, what do you think will happen if they can’t find a replacement?

FLYNN

Well I guess it’s going to be up to me to keep picking up the slack.

SALLY

Yeah, I know. Not really the best time for us to be getting promotions, is it? You know, baby coming.

FLYNN

Well they better have found a replacement by then.

DYLAN listens to them.

SALLY

Yeah. It’s just that I was thinking about what you were saying earlier, you know about Angie and well maybe it might be the best idea I told Don that I don’t want to stay on as principal.

FLYNN

Sally, no. This is a fantastic opportunity.

SALLY

Yeah, I know, but if Angie’s so determined to get this job she’d set fire to Don’s office.

FLYNN

If Angie did do it, then she’s going to get caught sooner or later so you don’t have to worry about it.

DYLAN walks out.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ANGIE is at the counter.

ANGIE

I’ll have a Caesar salad and a black coffee, please.

DYLAN walks in.

ANGIE

Perfect timing. Would you like anything to eat?

DYLAN

No, I’m not hungry.

ANGIE

Make that a large salad.

DYLAN

What have you done Angie?

ANGIE

I’m just trying to look after you. I thought that’s what mothers were supposed to do. Haven’t read the rule book?

DYLAN

You know that’s not what I’m talking about. I heard about the fire.

ANGIE

The lengths people go to, to get out of school.

DYLAN

Did you light it?

ANGIE

We’ve already been through this Dylan?

DYLAN

Look, Angie, I try to understand all your weird stuff, but if you can’t even tell.

ANGIE

I didn’t darling. You’ve moved back home. We’re making a fresh start. Don’t spoil it.

DYLAN walks out.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

HAYLEY walks in. NOAH is in the office.

HAYLEY

How’s your hand?

NOAH

Sore.

HAYLEY

Not as sore as Josh’s jaw. I’m really sorry Noah.

NOAH

Why? Because I found out.

HAYLEY

No. That it even happened.

NOAH

I just wish you could have been straight with me Hayley. If you had told me about it instead of making it some big secret things might have been different.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well at least now it’s out in the open. So, where do we go from here? I just want things back to the way they were.

NOAH

You always said that Hayley and you always expect me to be there for you. I told you there would be a time where I wouldn’t be there for you. I just can’t do this any more.

HAYLEY starts crying.

NOAH

It’s over.

THE PALACE

NOAH is there. JOSH walks in.

JOSH

I really think we need to talk about what’s going on.

NOAH

Why? You got what you wanted.

HAYLEY walks in.

HAYLEY

That is so untrue Noah.

NOAH

Just calling it as I see it.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well, this isn’t what about Josh wants. I make my own decisions about my life.

NOAH

Yeah, it’s got nothing to do with my anymore.

JOSH

He’s just upset Hayls.

NOAH

Don’t talk about me like I’m not here, OK.

JOSH

All right. I’m just trying to help things get back on track, OK.

NOAH

It’s a little late for that don’t you think.

JOSH

Fine, but if we’re all going to live in the same place I think we should try and sort this out.

NOAH

I don’t want to share a house with someone I can’t trust.

HAYLEY

You’re not going to move it.

NOAH

We can’t all stay here.

NOAH walks out.

THE SURF CLUB

DON and ANGIE are outside.

ANGIE

Don, hi. Any news on the fire?

DON

I spoke to the fire brigade this morning. They’re still convinced it was deliberately lit.

ANGIE

It would have to be, didn’t it.

DON

Unfortunately there wasn’t enough evidence to point to a suspect.

ANGIE

Aw, you’d think with all the high-tech equipment that they have these days they’d be able to find something.

DON

Yes, you would, wouldn’t you and interestingly, the only other thing we couldn’t find was the file that Morag gave me on you.

ANGIE

That is interesting.

DON

Yes, I could account for all the other files, as charred as they were.

ANGIE

Funny how fate plays a hand, isn’t it.

DON

Fate.

ANGIE

Let me know if I can help you clean and please don’t worry about anything. I’m sure the new principal would have wanted to redecorate anyway.

ANGIE walks away.
