Scripts - Episode 3418

THE SURF CLUB

NOAH and HAYLEY are there. JESSE is standing behind them.

NOAH

You know, because I told the truth, I’ve blown my chances. So much for being able to do some good.

HAYLEY

Mate, that’s just the system for you. You know, the wrong people always get the power. What you did tonight took guts.

NOAH

Thanks.

DON walks up to them.

DON

Ah sorry. I thought I’d be late. I got held up in Yabbie Creek. How did it go?

HAYLEY

Yeah, em, it was interesting.

DON

Is Alf still here?

NOAH

He was here, but, eh, I think he went home.

HAYLEY

Yeah, he didn’t look too good.

DON

Oh.

DON walks away.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

DON walks along outside the diner. He knocks on the door.

DON

Alf, are you in there?

He knocks again.

ALF

Don, is that you?

DON

Alf, what’s the matter? Are you all right? Can you open the door.

ALF is lying against the jukebox.

ALF

Yeah, yeah, coming.

ALF opens the door. DON walks in.

DON

What on earth has happened?

ALF

Oh, settle down Don. I’m fine.

DON

Well you certainly don’t look it.

ALF

I’ve just had a bit of a fall, that’s all.

DON

A fall. I’ll call an ambulance.

ALF

No, Don. I’m fine.

DON

No, Alf, you are not.

ALF

I said I am OK.

DON

Well at least let me help you upstairs.

ALF

Aw, if you have to Don.

DON

Come on.

ALF

Fair dinkum. You’re worse than Colleen.

ALF and DON walk into the kitchen.

SALLY’S HOUSE

FLYNN and SALLY are there. SALLY is sitting at the table. FLYNN is getting something out the fridge.

SALLY

She saw her name.

FLYNN

How is she?

SALLY

Well, she hasn’t said very much. She said she wants to think about it. I don’t know if she’s hurt or angry.

FLYNN

You couldn’t exactly blame her if she was both, could you?

FLYNN sits at the table.

SALLY

Maybe if I just explained things to her properly. I mean, once she’s had a bit of time to think about it.

FLYNN

Stop. You’ve got to listen to yourself.

SALLY

What?

FLYNN

OK, I’m getting a little bit worried about you. You’re starting to lose all perspective. You don’t want to lose what you two have a sisters, do you? That is what you’ve got to be working on.

SALLY

Yeah, I know. It just means so much to me.

FLYNN

I tell you it means that much to me too, but I do not want this thing taking over our lives. Right now, you’re causing more trouble than you are good.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

SEB, MIKEY, KIRSTY, JADE and NICK are walking along.

SEB

I’m so glad you’re parents have decided not to leave Summer Bay.

KIRSTY

Yeah, but it’s not a forever decision, so, huh.

NICK

It would be strange not having you guys around.

JADE

I’m sure you’d find someone to get over it with.

NICK

Jade, how many times do I have to tell you? You’ve got it all wrong about me and Simone. There’s nothing going on.

JADE

How is it then? What is going on?

NICK

I can’t tell you.

JADE

Then what is the point of this, of us, if we can’t even talk?

KIRSTY

Guys, just shush. Please, don’t forget after school we still need to do the directions and setting up for the dance.

NICK

I guess I’ll take the dance as my final goodbye.

SEB

I can’t believe you’re still even thinking about leaving school.

NICK

Well, more than thinking about it Seb.

MIKEY

Yeah, I’m leaving school too. I’m leaving today. I’m finished now.

KIRSTY

What?

SEB

He’s right. Today’s his last day at Summer Bay High.

MIKEY

But I’ll be at the school dance. Aw, yeah, I’ll be there.

MIKEY does some dancing.

MIKEY

Yeah, I’m going to the dance.

A PARK

NOAH and HAYLEY are walking along.

NOAH

I don’t know about this Hayls. Waste of money getting me a planner.

HAYLEY

Ah, it doesn’t have to be.

NOAH

What? You going to get a refund.

HAYLEY

What is the matter with you? This is not the Noah I know. The Noah I know would be out there fighting for his position on council until the very last second.

NOAH

I told you last night Hayley. It’s too late.

HAYLEY

Aw, so you’re a quitter now. OK.

NOAH

Hayley.

HAYLEY

Well, that’s what you’re saying. Noah, why did you give that speech last night? Because you’re passionate, that’s why. You believe it’s possible to make a change without having to sell your soul in the process. You still believe that?

NOAH

Yeah, of course.

HAYLEY

Yeah, and so do I and I reckon there’s a whole load of other people out there that feel the same way. Come on. You can quit on us now. You’ve got our hopes up.

NOAH

You’re pretty persuasive, you know that?

HAYLEY

Yeah, well I learned from the master.

NOAH and HAYLEY kiss. JESSE watches them. He is training with FLYNN.

JESSE

Do you think I jump to conclusions?

FLYNN

You. What on earth would make you say that?

JESSE

I’ve just been really impressed by the way Noah’s handled this election thing and, you know, I’ve been misjudging him.

FLYNN

I think there’s a possibility of that. Life would be a lot easier for all of us if you two could get on.

JESSE

Yeah. Hey, em, hear you’ve got a new flatmate?

FLYNN

Yeah. Sophie came round. Sal’s sister.

JESSE

Yeah, must be good for Sal having her. Big family and all that.

FLYNN

Yeah, yeah.

JESSE

I suppose I wish Rachel could have a baby sister, but I don’t think that will be happening in a hurry. Earth to Flynn.

FLYNN

Sorry mate. What?

JESSE

You all right mate. You were a million miles away.

FLYNN

Yeah, just thinking. Sal and I are going through a bit of stuff at the moment.

JESSE

Nothing serious I hope.

FLYNN

No, nothing we can’t work through.

FLYNN walks away.

SALLY’S HOUSE

SALLY is at the table. SOPHIE walks out the bedrooms.

SOPHIE

I thought you would have gone by now.

SALLY

I waited to see you. We have to talk.

SOPHIE

Better say it.

SOPHIE walks into the kitchen.

SALLY

Look, Sophie. I understand if you’re angry.

SOPHIE

Of course I’m angry Sal. I thought you invited me to come over and stay with you so we could spend some time together. How do you think it feels to learn that it wasn’t like that?

SALLY

No, I did want to see. It’s just that.

SOPHIE

No, you conned me into coming over Sally. That’s not fair.

SALLY

It isn’t like that Sophie. Just give me a chance to explain. OK, I didn’t tell you some of the story and for that I am really sorry, but then you started saying all this stuff about how Tamara was such a handful and how you didn’t want to have anymore kids. Well, I just thought that there was no point in bringing it up with you. You’re too important to me to let this come between us.

SOPHIE

I’m just disappointed, that’s all. You know, I never, never would have expected this from you.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

DON and MORAG are in a classroom.

MORAG

Well, is he all right?

DON

Well, he says he is, but he’s clearly not. He needs to start taking his medication again.

MORAG

Oh, it’s not my problem anymore. I did what I could. Now, could you please sign these. I am a very busy woman.

DON

I’m still not absolutely sure what I’m signing Morag.

MORAG

Documents stating that Roo and Duncan are the sole beneficiaries of Alfred’s estate.

DON

No, no. I’m sorry Morag, but I can’t. Not until I talk to Alf and a lawyer.

MORAG

Oh, don’t be ridiculous. I am a lawyer. They’re all above board. I can assure you.

DON

Nevertheless, I would still prefer to have another lawyer look them over.

MORAG

If you insist, but can you make it fast. I would like them finalised before I leave for the city.

MORAG walks away. SALLY and IRENE are walking along outside.

SALLY

She’s right. I haven’t been entirely honest about the real reason why I wanted Sophie to come and visit. I should have just been more up front with her. She is my sister.

IRENE

Aw, darl. Don’t beat yourself up.

SALLY

But now it’s threatening to affect my relationship with Flynn. It’s exactly what I don’t want. I always thought that having a baby would bring us closer together, not cause problems.

IRENE

If you want something that bad you tend to lose perspective.

SALLY

Doesn’t make it right.

IRENE

No, but it makes it understandable.

IRENE walks away.

THE SURF CLUB

HAYLEY and JESSE are in the gym.

JESSE

Hayls.

HAYLEY

Aw, Jess. Do you mind.

JESSE

Sorry, you go.

HAYLEY

No, you.

JESSE

Well I was wondering if you could cover my shift for me this salvo. I promised Leah I’d baby-sit VJ. Is there a problem?

HAYLEY

No.

JESSE

You sure?

HAYLEY

Yeah, I’m positive. Leah must be so excited about seeing Vinnie again even if it is just for one day.

JESSE

Yeah, yeah. She is.

HAYLEY

Aw, I’m sorry. I know this isn’t easy for you.

JESSE

No, it’s not a problem Hayls.

HAYLEY

Jess.

JESSE

It just a bit awkward, that’s all, with Vinnie.

HAYLEY

How?

JESSE

You know how I feel about Leah. I just don’t want Vinnie to think I’m moving on his turf.

HAYLEY

But nothings happened between you and Leah, has it?

JESSE

No, no, no. Of course not. Leah would never let that happen and neither would I.

HAYLEY

Yeah, well they’re you go. You’ve got nothing to worry about.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

SEB, MIKEY, JADE, and NICK are walking along a corridor.

SEB

Have you done the homework from Mrs Russell?

NICK

Can you please not say her name Seb.

They walk into the classroom. DON is standing at the blackboard.

SEB

Where’s Mrs Russell?

DON

Ah, she’s at a course in the city. I’m taking the class today.

NICK

Yeah, baby.

DON

Well, I never thought I’d see you so happy to have a class with me Smith.

NICK

Aw, it’s just the fact that normal teachers away, you get to badge.

DON

Aw, right. Do you? Well, open your books everyone. Lets get started.

THE SURF CLUB

NOAH and HAYLEY sit at a table outside.

NOAH

I handed out heaps of flyers and Flynn got a phone call at the drop-in centre congratulating me on what I said at the rally.

HAYLEY

See. I told you you still had a chance of winning.

NOAH

A ha, she listened to you babe. Hey, are you still all right for helping this afternoon?

HAYLEY

Aw, no. Sorry, I can’t get off work.

NOAH

I thought Jesse was covering for you.

JESSE walks over to the table.

JESSE

I thought you were hiding something before.

HAYLEY

Aw, hi Jesse.

JESSE

Why didn’t you just tell me Hayley?

HAYLEY

Ah, well you got in first.

JESSE

Look, I’ve got to cover for Alex while he organises VJ’s party and that’s it.

HAYLEY

Are you sure?

JESSE

Yes, of course and next time, make sure you tell me, all right.

HAYLEY

Aw, thank you.

NOAH

Yeah, thanks man.

JESSE

No worries mate and listen, good luck with the election. I think you’re one of the best candidates and I’ll be voting for you.

NOAH

Thanks.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALF and FLYNN are standing at the counter.

FLYNN

So, you’re feeling OK. No panics or dizziness.

ALF

Did Don Fisher put you up to this?

FLYNN

Aw. Might have had a word to me.

ALF

Listen, I’m a grown man, you know. I can look after meself.

DON walks in.

ALF

Aw, here he is. Summer Bay’s resident old woman.

DON

I was merely concerned for you Alf.

ALF

Yeah, will you didn’t have to be. I told you that last night. I’m OK.

COLLEEN walks out the kitchen.

COLLEEN

Now, don’t you worry Dr. Saunders. I’ll keep a special eye on him from now on. Make sure he’s eating properly.

FLYNN

Thank you Colleen.

COLLEEN

You can count on me. You go and sit down. I’ll bring you some lunch.

ALF

Thanks a lot mate. Have you got any idea what you’ve unleashed?

MORAG walks in.

MORAG

Have you signed those papers yet Donald?

DON

Aw, for heavens sake Morag. It’s just been a few hours. We’re just about to discuss it.

MORAG

Well would you please hurry up. As soon they’re ready I can go back home and not before time. I’ve had enough of this god forsaken backwater to last me a lifetime.

ALF

We’ll miss you too sis.

A MAN walks in carrying a clipboard.

COLLEEN

Aw, hello there. Can I help you?

MAN

I’m looking for a Morag Bellingham.

COLLEEN

Aw, that’s her. Something wrong?

The MAN walks over to MORAG.

MAN

Morag Bellingham.

MORAG

Yes.

MAN

Can you sign here please.

MORAG

What’s that?

MAN

I just need your signature now.

MORAG signs the paper.

MAN

Thank you. Have a nice day.

The MAN walks out.

ALF

What is it?

MORAG

I’m being sued for deformation of character to the tune of three quarters of a million dollars.

DON

By who?

MORAG

Well, who do you think? Angela Russell.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

MIKEY, JADE, SEB and NICK are all in a classroom. SALLY is the teacher.

NICK

Jade.

NICK shows JADE something he has drawn on his arm.

MIKEY

Em, excuse me Miss Fletcher. Can I say some words before the bell goes.

SALLY

Em, yeah. OK, Mikey.

MIKEY stands up.

MIKEY

I want to say thank you to everybody for making me so welcome. Yeah, I like this school. I like my desk and my chair. I wish I could take them with me, but Mr. Fisher said I couldn’t. Yeah, and I want to say a special thank you to you Miss Fletcher. You’ve been the best teacher I’ve ever had.

The bell rings.

MIKEY

Aw, can you stop the bell. I’ve got some more words to say.

The bell stops ringing.

MIKEY

Thanks. And, em, these are for you Miss.

MIKEY hands SALLY some flowers. DON is standing at the door.

MIKEY

See, they’re red.

SALLY

Thank you. It’s been a pleasure teaching you Mikey. You should come back and visit us sometime.

MIKEY

Aw, yeah. I’d like that.

NICK

Miss Fletcher, can I ask you a question.

SALLY

Yeah, Nick.

NICK

Can we go now?

SALLY

OK, thank you everyone.

They walk out the classroom.

DON

You deserve those flowers and the thanks. You’ve done a wonderful job with him.

SALLY

Aw, Mikey’s done all the hard work. He’s a really good kid.

MIKEY

Hurry up Miss Fletcher. We’ve got a lot of setting up to do.

MIKEY drags SALLY out the classroom. SALLY, JADE, KIRSTY, DON, IRENE, NICK, SEB and MIKEY are in the hall which is being decorated for the dance.

SALLY

Ah, Kirsty and Jade, yeah, if you want to finish the sun. Nick, Seb, you do the balloons. Mrs Roberts, Mr. Fisher and I will put the chairs away.

MIKEY

I’m doing the ocean, remember.

SALLY

OK, lets do it.

KIRSTY and JADE are working on the floor.

KIRSTY

Jade, can you please pass me the glue?

JADE watches NICK and SEB. MIKEY is playing with some of the decoration.

MIKEY

I’m drowning Nick, I’m drowning.

NICK

I’m coming.

MIKEY

Help me.

NICK and SEB wrestle MIKEY to the ground.

DON

All right you three. We haven’t got an endless supply of that stuff, you know.

KIRSTY

Jade, why don’t you just give in. It’s obvious you want to.

JADE

No, I don’t.

MIKEY is working on the ocean. SALLY walks past.

MIKEY

Hey, look Miss Fletcher. It’s the ocean.

SALLY

Aw, that’s great Mikey. Well done.

MIKEY

Hey, look everyone. See how blue it is. Water can get very cold.

NICK and JADE are painting something.

NICK

Here, let me help.

JADE

Thanks.

IRENE is carrying a box along a corridor. SOPHIE is walking along.

SOPHIE

Oh, Irene. Hi.

IRENE

Aw, hi Sophie. Are you looking for Sal darl?

SOPHIE

Yeah. Is she still around?

IRENE

Ah, she’s actually up in the hall helping the decorations.

SOPHIE

Aw, OK, thanks.

IRENE

Hey, Sophie love, look. I don’t mean to stick my bib in where’s its not wanted, but Sal told me what happened. Look love, don’t be too hard on her. She just wants to be a mum so much it’s kind of clouding her judgement at the moment.

SOPHIE

Yeah, I know. It’s just, it was a bit of a shock, that’s all. Pretty much the last thing I expected actually.

IRENE

Yeah, well, I know how you feel. It was a bit of a shock to me too when Fin asked me if I’d a surrogate for her and her hubbie.

SOPHIE

Aw, OK, and what made you change your mind?

IRENE

Well, I guess when I took the time to think about I realised how much I took it for granted the fact that I can have kids easily, but, you know, for a lot of people out there, it’s not like that. They have to plan, they have to save. I mean, Sal was telling me it might cost upwards of twenty grand. Look love, I don’t want to pressure you or get you to change your mind or anything like that at all. I just want you to know that Sal didn’t mislead you deliberately. She just did what she thought she had to do to become a mum.

DON walks up to them.

DON

Hello Sophie.

SOPHIE

Aw, hello Mr. Fisher.

DON

Irene, Mikey’s got carried away with the decorating again. Have you got some masking tape in there?

IRENE

Mikey is an autistic boy we’ve had all term, but I tell you what, he is one changed kid from the one who walked through the door a couple of months ago, isn’t he Don?

DON

Yes, he certainly is and it’s all due to Sally. She’s got a wonderful way with children.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

ALEX is dressed up wearing a dog suit. JESSE is standing at the door.

ALEX

Hello VJ. Happy birthday. Hey, VJ, look who it is? It’s the birthday boy.

JESSE

What are you doing?

ALEX

Hey, nothing. I’m just practising for VJ’s party. I’m going to be Woofer the dog.

JESSE

Ah, Woofer.

ALEX

Yeah, I was going to come as Tinky Winky, but the costume was too small.

JESSE

I don’t think you should worry about the impersonation mate. I’m sure VJ will love it no matter how bad you are.

ALEX

That’s if he can hear me.

JESSE

Of course he will hear you. The implants being turned on tomorrow, isn’t it?

ALEX

Yeah, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be able to hear from day one.

JESSE

Aw, right. I mean the way Leah’s actually talking I thought it was a guarantee.

ALEX

That’s the whole problem. She’s been spending so much time focusing on it being switched on and Vinnie coming back to town. She hasn’t even prepared herself for what’s she going to do if the implant doesn’t work, you know.

JESSE

Yeah. Well, maybe she’ll deal with it. You know, I mean she already does.

ALEX

Yeah, but it’s going to hit her hard this time. I guess we’ll just have to be here for her.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

SALLY and IRENE are walking along.

SALLY

Did she say what she wanted?

IRENE

No. I thought she was coming down here to see you though.

SALLY

Well I didn’t see her.

JADE and KIRSTY work on something. SEB, NICK and MIKEY carry some scenery.

NICK

So Mikey, you got a date for the dance or?

MIKEY

Yeah, I’m going to take my mum. She brought a new dress and everything.

NICK

Aw, way to go.

MIKEY

Who are you taking then Nick?

NICK

Well.

JADE

He’s taking me.

NICK

I am.

JADE

Yeah, doesn’t mean everything’s OK with us though. We’ve still got stuff to work through.

NICK

Yeah, girls stuff.

MIKEY

Who are you taking Seb?

SEB

Are we still on Kirsty?

KIRSTY

Em, yeah, we are. I’ll be back in a sec.

KIRSTY walks out.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

ALEX walks into the house. JESSE is playing with VJ in the living room.

JESSE

Way. Hey, Alex. Come here and look at this. Has he ever stood up like this before?

ALEX

Yeah, a couple of times. Hey, this could be a camera moment. Leah will want to see this. Hey, go get the camera. Just around the corner.

JESSE

I don’t know where it is. You go get the camera.

ALEX

Just on the table.

JESSE

Leah is going to want to see this dude. Get it.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

KIRSTY is standing outside. SEB walks up to her.

SEB

Kirsty, what is it?

KIRSTY

I just needed some air, that’s all.

SEB

Things aren’t to good for you, are they?

KIRSTY

I’ll be OK.

SEB

It’s OK to be upset.

KIRSTY

I’m sixteen tomorrow Seb. I should be celebrating, but instead I’m trying to deal with things here that even my parents can’t cope with. This has just been the worst year of my life.

KIRSTY start crying.

THE PATTERSON HOUSE

ALEX has the video camera. JESSE is with VJ.

ALEX

OK. Come to Uncle Alex.

JESSE

Aw, who’s a good little boy, eh. Look at you walking now. You’ve been a good boy. You’ve been a good boy.

SALLY’S HOUSE

SALLY puts MIKEY’S flowers in a vase. FLYNN walks in.

FLYNN

Aw, got a rival do I?

SALLY

Aw, they’re from Mikey for being the best teacher he’s ever had.

FLYNN

Well isn’t this your special days because these are from for being the best girlfriend I’ve ever had. I’m really sorry about last night. I think I might have come on a bit strong.

SALLY

No, no, I’m the one that’s sorry. You were right. I had lost perspective.

FLYNN

Had. Past tense.

SALLY

Well I realised a few things today. Things that have helped give me some of that perspective back. I’m not going to push this surrogacy thing anymore. If something falls into place then so be it, but if it’s not meant to be, that’s OK to.

FLYNN

We will have a child Sal, when the time is right.

SALLY and FLYNN cuddle. SOPHIE walks in.

SOPHIE

Aw, don’t stop on my account.

SALLY

Hey.

FLYNN

Em, coffees anyone?

SALLY

Yeah, thank you.

SOPHIE

Yeah, love one.

FLYNN walks into the kitchen.

SALLY

Irene said you popped into the school today.

SOPHIE

Yeah, you sounded busy so I thought I’d leave you to it. I did have a chat to Irene though. Does it really cost twenty thousand for this IVF thing?

SALLY

I’ve dropped all of that Sophie. I was just telling Flynn the same thing.

SOPHIE

Aw, that’s a shame. I’d hate to be doing the whole thing on my own.

SALLY

What? Are you saying.

SOPHIE

Sal, you’d make a wonderful, wonderful mother and if I can help you make that happen then, you know, it would be honour.

SALLY

I don’t believe this. Flynn. We’re going to have a baby.

FLYNN

You serious.

SOPHIE

Well it’s not a joking matter.

SALLY

Thank you so much Sophie.

SALLY

Aw, we are Flynn.

FLYNN

Yes, yes, we are.

SOPHIE

Hey, where’s my cuddle?
