Scripts - Episode 3290

THE HOSPITAL

SHELLEY is wheeled in on a trolley. CHARLOTTE and RHYS walk alongside her.

CHARLOTTE

You can go with Kirsty if you like, but we’re going to have to take Shelley straight through to run some more tests.

RHYS

See you later sweetheart. I love you.

KIRSTY is wheeled in.

KIRSTY

Has she woken up yet?

RHYS

No.

KANE is wheeled in.

CHARLOTTE

Pat, how are you doing?

PAT

BP’s ninety over fifty, pulse one, but I can’t stop him bleeding from his IV side.

KANE

I can’t breathe.

CHARLOTTE

Hey, is the anti-venom ready. We’ve got to get more fluids. Drop the adrenalin. Let’s go.

NURSE

You can come with your daughter Mr Sutherland.

DR CARLINGFORD and CELIA walk along together.

DR CARLINGFORD

The operation went well and Mr. Stewart’s on his way to recovery. Someone will inform you.

DANI, JADE, BRODIE and JOSH walk in.

DANI

Ah, excuse me.

CELIA

Oh, thank you doctor.

DANI

Sorry. I just want to find out how my mum and sister are.

JADE

They just came in by ambulance.

DANI

Kirsty and Shelley Sutherland.

DR CARLINGFORD

I haven’t any information on them as yet. Someone will be out to see you sorry.

CELIA

Don’t worry girls. They’ve just gone through and they’re being well look after. Have faith.

JADE

In god you mean.

CELIA

Or medicine. I said a few prayers for them myself over the last few days so if you prefer to put your faith in doctors you can rest assured we have all the bases covered.

Later, CELIA is sitting in a corridor. ALF is wheeled out on a bed.

CELIA

Alfred, how are you?

ALF

They’ve got me so drugged up I can’t feel a thing.

CELIA

Dr. Carlingford said the operation went well so it should be a speedy recovery. Would you like me to let Duncan and Shauna know, or do you want to call them yourself.

ALF

I wouldn’t call them if I had the flu. This is no different.

CELIA

This is very different. They’ll be concerned.

ALF

Not if they don’t know, they won’t. How are things going with the search?

CELIA

All three have been found. They’re here getting treatment.

ALF

What about the diner?

CELIA

Stop worrying. Everything’s taking care of.

ALF

Thanks sis.

CELIA

That’s what I’m here for. Are you sure I can’t call anyone?

ALF

How many times do I have to tell you? I don’t want to worry anyone.

CHARLOTTE is walking along a corridor. RHYS walks up to her.

RHYS

Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE

Hey. How are you holding up?

RHYS

OK. Oh, well. I mean, it’s early days yet.

CHARLOTTE

Yeah, Rhys, there’s really nothing more I can tell you right now. Not until we get the test results back. What we’re doing right now is stabilising her, getting her temperature down and getting some fluid into her.

RHYS

Em, is there any chance of brain damage?

CHARLOTTE

Like you said, early days, but she has opened her eyes in response to pain which is good.

RHYS

She squeezed my hand in the ambulance. I’m sure she did.

CHARLOTTE

That’s a good sign. Hey, I let you know as soon as we get some news.

CHARLOTTE walks away. RHYS walks into a room. JADE, JOSH, DANI and BRODIE are standing around KIRSTY’S bed.

DANI

Dad, any change?

RHYS

No.

KIRSTY

Well, what about Kane?

RHYS

I didn’t ask.

KIRSTY

Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE walks over to the bed.

CHARLOTTE

How can I help?

KIRSTY

How’s Kane?

CHARLOTTE

He’s getting there. We’ve given him the anti-venom and he’s responding very well. He’s breathing by himself. He’s a lucky boy.

KIRSTY

Thanks. I couldn’t not ask, not after how he saved mum’s life.

RHYS

How?

KIRSTY

The snake was on mum when we found her. Kane pulled it off with his hand. That’s how he got bitten.

CHARLOTTE and DR CARLINGFORD walk along a corridor.

DR CARLINGFORD

You’re calling it a day then.

CHARLOTTE

Finally. My shift finished over an hour ago.

DR CARLINGFORD

Are you trying to impress anyone?

CHARLOTTE

Would there be any point?

DR CARLINGFORD

No.

CHARLOTTE

Which is why I’m doing if for the patients. Shelley Sutherland, I was hoping to get her test results back. They said they wouldn’t be ready till tomorrow.

DR CARLINGFORD

Sutherland.

CHARLOTTE

Yeah, in ICU.

DR CARLINGFORD

I’m on way down to see her now. She’s having some low cardiac elapids.

CHARLOTTE

And low urine output. Yeah, she’s a friend of mine.

DR CARLINGFORD

You are subtly asking me to give her special attention.

CHARLOTTE

Certainly not subtly enough.

DR CARLINGFORD

You’re in a feisty frame of mind. For someone in your condition it’s way past the end of your shift and fatigue’s obviously not a problem.

CHARLOTTE

I think my body might be getting into training for being a working mother.

DR CARLINGFORD

Good night doctor.

CHARLOTTE

Good night doctor.

CHARLOTTE walks away.

SALLY’S HOUSE

SALLY is there. CHARLOTTE walks in.

CHARLOTTE

Hey.

SALLY

Hi. Any news?

CHARLOTTE

Eh, Kirsty’s good. Kane’s pulling through.

SALLY

How about Shelley?

CHARLOTTE

Not good. We’re still waiting on test results.

CHARLOTTE walks into the kitchen. JUDE and FLYNN are there.

CHARLOTTE

Hello.

JUDE

Hey.

FLYNN

Hey.

JUDE

How was your day?

CHARLOTTE

Don’t ask.

JUDE

Oh, in that case. Put up your feet. Dinner will be ready at eight.

FLYNN

Eight-thirty.

CHARLOTTE

Do you want me to do something here?

JUDE

Ah, no way. Go and relax.

FLYNN

I would like to eat at sometime in the next twenty-four hours.

CHARLOTTE

What do you mean?

FLYNN

Ah, apparently you and cooking aren’t the best combo. At least that’s the word on the street.

CHARLOTTE

Dobber.

JUDE

I’m innocent, I swear.

CHARLOTTE

In that case, you prepare to eat your words.

FLYNN

Yes, it’s words I’m worried about.

CHARLOTTE

Get out of here. Go.

FLYNN

Right.

FLYNN walks out.

JUDE

Are you sure you’re going to be OK?

CHARLOTTE

Yes, I’ll be fine, so.

FLYNN

Don’t argue with a pregnant woman.

JUDE

Right, well give me a yell if you need a hand. My woman, she’s dynamite.

FLYNN

Well, let’s wait till after dinner mate until we start heaping on all the praise.

JUDE

I’m prepared to heap it now. Life is good man. I can’t believe it took Charlotte getting pregnant for me to realise that.

THE HOSPITAL

JADE, DANI, RHYS, BRODIE and JOSH stand beside KIRSTY’S bed.

KIRSTY

But it wasn’t until after he’d helped me carry mum to the creek I realise he’d actually been bitten.

BRODIE

So he hadn’t said anything at all before?

KIRSTY

Not straight away. Not till heaps later.

SHELLEY is wheeled in.

JOSH

Hey.

RHYS

Shell.

BRODIE

Shelley.

DANI

Mum.

RHYS

Sweetheart.

DR CARLINGFORD walks in.

RHYS

I didn’t expect her to be out of extensive care so soon. That must be a good sign.

DR CARLINGFORD

She’s regained consciousness, but she’s not out of the woods yet.

RHYS

So, what’s actually wrong with her? I’ve had to cope with not knowing if my wife was alive or dead for the last week and I need some answers.

DR CARLINGFORD

Perhaps we should step out in the corridor.

RHYS and DR CARLINGFORD walk out into the corridor. JADE looks from around the corner

DR CARLINGFORD

Shelley might have suffered some damage to her heart and kidneys. At this stage, till we await more tests, I’m afraid that’s all we can gain from all of this.

SALLY’S HOUSE

FLYNN, SALLY, CHARLOTTE and JUDE sit at the table.

CHARLOTTE

Admit it.

FLYNN

Oh, yeah, I will. It was a delight. A triumph, a culinary triumph.

CHARLOTTE

Thank you.

JUDE

Your mummy is not only the smartest doctor in the world, she’s also an awesome cook. Don’t let anyone tell you anything different, OK.

CHARLOTTE

It feels really weird having someone talk to your stomach.

JUDE

Would you rather I didn’t?

CHARLOTTE

No, I don’t mind.

SALLY

Anyone for coffee.

CHARLOTTE

I might.

SALLY

I thought you were off it.

CHARLOTTE

Yeah, only because I haven’t been feeling like it, but I think the twins need a caffeine fix.

SALLY

Ah, Jude.

JUDE

No, early start. Hospital shift.

CHARLOTTE

Hey, in that case. Cancel my coffee. I’m going to have an early night as well.

JUDE

Nah, have one if you want one?

CHARLOTTE

Nah, I’m starting to think my body doesn’t know what’s good for it. OK, I bags the shower.

JUDE

Ah, first in, first served.

JUDE and CHARLOTTE run out.

FLYNN

Have I told you lately about how I feel about having you back safe and sound?

SALLY

Aw, once or twice.

FLYNN

My heart does go out to Rhys though.

SALLY

And the girls. They’re really lucky they got Shelley back.

FLYNN

Have you been having dreams about your parents again?

SALLY

No, no. I’m just glad that they don’t have to go through what I did, that’s all.

THE HOSPITAL

KIRSTY lies in her bed. JADE is beside her.

JADE

Were you scared?

KIRSTY

I really thought mum was going to die. I shouldn’t have argued with her. That fight mum and me had said to each other. I’m so stupid.

JADE

Hey, she’ll wake up.

KIRSTY

I’m going to the loo.

KIRSTY and JADE walks out the room. DANI, RHYS, BRODIE and JOSH are there.

RHYS

I think mum’s probably going to sleep through the night so, em, probably best if you all go home again and get a good nights sleep. Will you take them Josh?

JOSH

Yeah, sure.

JADE

I don’t want to go home.

RHYS

You can’t do anything here sweetheart.

JADE

Please, dad, let me stay.

RHYS

I think you’re better off going home and getting a good nights sleep and coming back tomorrow.

JADE

Please.

DANI

Dad, we can hold the fort.

RHYS

OK.

JADE

Thank you.

KIRSTY walks over to KANE’S bed.

KIRSTY

Sorry. I didn’t mean to wake you.

KANE

I wasn’t asleep anyway.

KIRSTY

How are you feeling?

KANE

Like a grenade went off in my head.

KIRSTY

Well, see you.

KANE

Yeah.

KIRSTY walks away. JADE is sitting next to SHELLEY’S bed.

JADE

Dear god, I know I haven’t talked to you when there’s bad stuff happening, but I really need you to do something for me. Please, please, let my mum be OK. I’ll do anything you want. I know haven’t been the sort of person I should be, but I can change if you just help my mum get better. Please god.

The next morning JADE is lying in a bed. RHYS sits beside her. JUDE is cleaning the phone.

RHYS

Sweetheart, we should probably go home and get something to eat. We’ll come back OK.

KIRSTY is sitting next to SHELLEY’S bed. SHELLEY wakes up.

SHELLEY

Hey, hey.

KIRSTY

Mum, I didn’t think you were going to wake up. I’m so sorry mum. I’m sorry for disobeying you. I’m sorry for the arguing.

SHELLEY

Yeah, I know you are. Everything’s all right now.

KIRSTY

Dad and Jade have been all night. They must have gone for a shower.

SHELLEY

Poor dad. He must have been so worried.

KIRSTY

You do forgive me, don’t you? Mum, I’m so sorry. I’ll never do anything like that again, ever.

SHELLEY

Of course I forgive you.

KIRSTY

And you can ground me for the next two thousand years, I don’t care. I never want to leave the house again.

SHELLEY

I’ll remind you of that in a couple of weeks, shall I?

SHELLEY and KIRSTY cuddle.

SALLY’S HOUSE

CHARLOTTE sits at the table. SALLY walks into the kitchen.

SALLY

Hey, what happened to the girl who could only eat dry toast and tea?

CHARLOTTE

I’m feeling much better.

SALLY

The morning sickness gone then?

CHARLOTTE

For about a  week now. I really noticed it myself this morning, you know. All I could think about lately was work.

SALLY

Yeah, I don’t know how you’ve kept up the pace. You should be exhausted.

CHARLOTTE

Maybe I’m still running on triage adrenalin from the search.

SALLY

So, what’s on today?

CHARLOTTE

A second anti-natal visit.

SALLY

You look like a different person.

CHARLOTTE

What can I say? I feel normal again.

THE HOSPITAL

CELIA walks into ALF’S room. DR CARLINGFORD stands near the bed.

CELIA

Alfred. What’s happened? You look terrible.

ALF

Not half as bad as I feel, I can tell you that.

DR CARLINGFORD

It appears Mr. Stewart has picked up a wound infection. He’s on antibiotics, but we’re still waiting on the extra blood results. Yes, he’s still running a high fever. There’s a good chance he might have to go back to the theatre.

CELIA

Oh no.

DR CARLINGFORD

We’ll keep you informed. Hopefully we’ll have those results within an hour.

DR CARLINGFORD walks out the room. CHARLOTTE is there.

DR CARLINGFORD

Aw, Dr. Adams, I wasn’t expecting to see you till later, but seeing as you’re here would you like to observe the lamonectomy that Dr. Abernethy’s performing this morning.

CHARLOTTE

I’d love to, but I’m just on my way to an ultrasound appointment.

DR CARLINGFORD

Yes, we all have our priorities.

CHARLOTTE

See you later then.

KIRSTY is sitting next SHELLEY’S bed. JADE, RHYS, BRODIE and DANI walk in.

BRODIE

Shelley.  Are you OK?

ALF is lying in the bed. CELIA is sitting beside him. FLYNN walks in.

FLYNN

Hey, how’s he doing?

CELIA

The doctor thinks he might have a wound infection. He’s waiting for the test results before waiting what to do.

FYLNN

Right, well hope it’s good news, Celia.

CELIA

So do I.

FLYNN walks over to KANE’S bedroom.

FLYNN

Kane, how are you feeling?

KANE

Getting there. A lot better than yesterday.

FLYNN

Yeah, I can just imagine.

KANE

How’s Mrs Sutherland? Is she all right?

FLYNN

Em, I didn’t actually get a chance to call Rhys and the girls. Thought they could do without another phone call last night. I did however hear a few whispers about you mate.

KANE

Like what?

FLYNN

Well it appears you’ve been a bit of a hero.

KANE

Yeah, real Indiana Jones mate.

FLYNN

Hey, hey, hey, you saved somebody’s life and you risked your own to do it. That’s pretty impressive stuff. Do not sell yourself short.

KANE

Kirsty had to get me out of the water, she saved me too.

FLYNN

I guess you guys are even then.

KANE

Yeah, well, I suppose I did something right for once.

DANI, BRODIE, RHYS, KIRSTY and JADE sit around SHELLEY’S bed.

SHELLEY

I remember dragging myself up on to the beach and lying there for, I don’t know how long. I was freezing and I knew I had to find somewhere warmer so when I finally found the strength I walked into the scrub.

DANI

Why didn’t you go to the beach when the sun came up?

SHELLEY

Well, I was going to, but I must have walked further into the bush than I thought. By the next morning when I woke up I headed for the beach or at least that’s where I thought I was heading, but after wandering around in circles for ages I realised I was lost. Anyway, I just kept going. I thought I have to hit a road or something eventually. I was so thirsty and that’s all I remember. I don’t know how long I wandered around for. I don’t know how I got here.

RHYS

You’ve got your daughter to thank for that. She’s the one that found you. She’s the one who got the attention of the rescue chopper.

KIRSTY

It wasn’t just me mum. Kane was there. He was one that pulled the snake off you and he got bitten instead.

SHELLEY

Kane Phillips.

RHYS

I think it’s about time I got you girls off to school.

JADE

Bye mum. I love you.

DANI

Love you mum. Bye.

BRODIE

I’m so glad you’re all right.

RHYS, BRODIE, DANI and JADE walk out.

KIRSTY

It’s really hard to get your head around, isn’t it?

SHELLEY

Kane. Yeah.

KIRSTY

Em, I’m going to go down the canteen. Do you want me to get you something?

SHELLEY

No.

KIRSTY walks out. CELIA is sitting outside on a bench. KANE and FLYNN walk out.

FLYNN

If this gets too exhausting, we’ll just grab you a wheelchair, eh.

KANE

No, man. Anything’s better than all day in bed. Thanks for coming.

FLYNN

Yeah. Thank you, for everything you did on the boat, afterwards. Do you reckon your auntie will get down to visit you?

KANE

What? My other visitor.

FLYNN

Hey, remember what I said about talking down on yourself.

KANE

That’s not talking down man, it’s the truth.

FLYNN

Hang on a second. Got a bit of cabin fever too, eh.

CELIA

No, not really. Alfred’s on his way back to surgery. The test results confirmed an infection.

FLYNN

Right. That’s no good, but hey, they don’t come any tougher than him, do they? He’ll be OK.

CELIA

The good lord will see to that.

FLYNN

Yeah. Anyway my thoughts are with you both.

CELIA

Thank you.

KIRSTY walks over to KANE.

KIRSTY

Hi.

KANE

Hi.

KIRSTY

It’s good to see you up and around.

KANE

How’s your mum?

KIRSTY

Yeah, she woke up this morning.

KANE

Cool.

KIRSTY

Well, I’ll see you later then.

KANE

OK.

KIRSTY walks back inside. RHYS walks into SHELLEY’S room carrying flowers.

RHYS

Hey.

SHELLEY

Aw, you didn’t have to do that.

RHYS

Yeah, well the girls wouldn’t get out the car at school until I promised I would. Where’s Kirsty?

SHELLEY

Aw, she’s gone to the toilet.

RHYS

This is from Jade.

RHYS kisses SHELLEY.

RHYS

This is from Dani.

RHYS kisses SHELLEY.

RHYS

This is from Brodie.

RHYS kisses SHELLEY.

RHYS

And this is from me.

RHYS kisses SHELLEY.

SHELLEY

I might get used to all this attention.

RHYS

Well you should. We’ll be taking very good care of you from now on. No more bushwalking for a start.

SHELLEY

I still can’t believe I owe my life to Kane Phillips.

RHYS

You and me both. I used to hate him. I don’t know what to feel.

SHELLEY

Grateful. I think the only thing we can do for the moment is to separate this Kane Phillips from the one who hurt Dani.

RHYS

Forgive him for wrecking her life. Easy as that.

SHELLEY

It’s not going to be easy, but if he hadn’t helped me out there we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

RHYS

When you put it like that I can’t argue. I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t come back to me Shell.

CHARLLOTTE walks along a corridor. She passes DR CARLINGFORD.

DR CARLINGFORD

Ah, doctor. Just wanted to check Mrs Donaldson’s test results. The cardiac enzymes are.

CHARLOTTE

I think I need to go home.

DR CARLINGFORD

Are you all right?

CHARLOTTE

Can you get a replacement for today?

DR CARLINGFORD

Yes, of course. is there anything.

CHARLOTTE walks out.

SALLY’S HOUSE

CHARLOTTE walks in. JUDE is sleeping on the couch. He wakes up.

JUDE

Aw, hello. Hey, what’s the matter?

CHARLOTTE

The babies are dead. For maybe two weeks now and I didn’t know. I was just so glad I wasn’t sick anymore.

CHARLOTTE starts crying.
