THE SURF CLUB

CHARLOTTE and ALEX run in. ALF is lying on the floor.

ALF

Ah, doc, doc, me leg. Can you give me something for the pain? Anything.

CHARLOTTE

I’ll have a look at you first Alf.

ALF

Ah, doc. Geez.

CHARLOTTE

Have you got pain anywhere else?

ALF

Aw, I might as well broken me flamin’ back. It wouldn’t be any worse than this.

CHARLOTTE

Can you get an ambulance for me please, as soon as possible.

ALEX

Yeah.

CHARLOTTE

Don’t worry Alf. We’ll have you in hospital before you know that.

ALEX is on his phone.

ALEX

Hello, yeah.

We need an ambulance right now.

CELIA walks over.

CELIA

I’ve had some nursing experience. Can I help?

CHARLOTTE

Yes. Can you please get a blanket to keep him warm? Do you know where you are Alf?

ALF

I’m in flamin’ doc, that’s where I am. Can’t you give me something for it? I’m in agony.

CHARLOTTE

Do you know what day it is?

ALF

I don’t know. It’s Friday. No, it’s Thursday.

CHARLOTTE

Alex.

ALEX hands CHARLOTTE the phone.

CHARLOTTE

Hi, this is Dr. Charlotte Adams here. I’ve got a patient with an open fracture to the left tib and fib. Thank you.

ALF

Can you get Josh. Somebody get Josh for me. I’ve got to tell him what to do to keep the search going.

CHARLOTTE

Just relax about the search Alf. We have to look after you first.

ALF

No, no, no, no, no. Those last three people. If we don’t get them today I really don’t like their chances.

THE BUSH

KIRSTY is walking through the bush. KANE is sitting against a tree.

KIRSTY

You’re not going to sleep, are you?

KANE

No.

SHELLEY is lying down.

KIRSTY

Are you sure you’re allowed to?

KANE

What do you mean?

KIRSTY

Well, I didn’t think that people with snake bites were allowed to go to sleep.

KANE

Me neither.

KIRSTY

Well then, talk to me.

KANE

What about?

KIRSTY

I don’t know. Em, tell me a poem. Your lifetime story, your favourite colour.

KANE

Blue.

KIRSTY

OK. Em, where did you grow up?

KANE

Summer Bay.

KIRSTY

Tell me about your family?

KANE

You don’t want to know.

KIRSTY

You’re right. All I want is for all us three to get off here alive. OK, it doesn’t matter what you talk about. Tell me anything. Em, your first memory?

KANE

Mum and dad blueing. I guess that’s why I figured parents acted that way. I was about six and went over and stayed at mates place and so things in a different way.

KIRSTY

Keep going.

KANE

Em, when I went and stayed over at Dougie’s, it was like being on a different planet. His parents actually talked. Not just when they had to. So, I went home and I asked mum why her and dad weren’t like that. Dad heard, did his block and that was about the only time I stayed over at a mates place.

KIRSTY

And you weren’t allowed to ever again?

KANE

No.

KIRSTY

Aw, here mum. It’s OK, it’s OK. I put a big X down. We’re going to go home real soon, I promise. You just try and drink. Are you getting a headache?

KANE

Yeah, ripper. I’m getting all blurry too. This stuff must be going through me fast.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

JADE is in the laundry. BRODIE walks in.

BRODIE

It’s hard not to keep wondering, isn’t it?

RHYS and DANI sit at the table.

RHYS

Thanks for your help with this.

DANI

Yeah, I had things on my mind.

RHYS

Yeah, well we all have. I’m sorry I haven’t been here more to help you girls. It’s just being down the club, being able to hear the two way and everything’s that going on, well it makes me feel like I’m part of it even though I’m not. Is that it? OK, I’m going to head back to the kiosk. Feed some more hungry volunteers.

DANI

Em, dad. I can mail this. I’ll come with you.

RHYS

Yeah, if you like.

RHYS and DANI walk out.

JADE

Bye dad.

DON’S HOUSE

JUNE looks around the room. SAM and SEB walk out the kitchen.

SEB

You lost something?

SAM

You having a brain fade?

JUNE

No, I’m projecting. Now that I’m officially going to stay for a while I’ve decided we need some colour around here. This place has got potential.

SAM

You want to redecorate.

SEB

Without asking gramps.

JUNE

Who said I wasn’t going to ask him?

DON walks in.

DON

I thought we were having lunch when I got back.

SEB

Sorry, we were starving.

DON

All right. I’ve got a few errands to run. Shouldn’t be long.

JUNE

OK.

DON

Is there anything you would like when I’m out?

JUNE

No, no, I’m fine, thank you.

SEB

Are you sure? I just thought you were thinking of something.

JUNE

No, no.

DON

All right, I’ll see you later.

DON walks out.

JUNE

It’s called strategy.

SAM

And I bet you ten bucks it doesn’t happen.

JUNE

Don’t make any bets until you’ve helped Seb move the furniture for me, to where I want it.

SEB

You really want to move everything, without asking him.

JUNE

He’s got eyes. He’ll see it when he gets back.

THE SURF CLUB

ALEX, DANI and RHYS stand together. ALF is lying on the ground.

ALEX

And next second he was on the ground.

RHYS

So, what’s happening with the search?

DANI

Dad.

RHYS

I’m sorry Alf’s broken his leg, but I want, I need to know that things haven’t ground to a halt.

ALEX

Well, he’s been filling Josh in.

ALF is lying on the ground. JOSH, CELIA and CHARLOTTE stand around him.

ALF

And tell him Noah’s teams, eh, aw, strewth, I can’t remember where they are?

CELIA

It’s all right Alfred. We’ll call them on the radio and ask.

CHARLOTTE

Try to relax Alf. I’ll see you guys in there.

ALF is carried out. CELIA and CHARLOTTE walk out.

RHYS

What’s happening?

JOSH

Well Alf wants me to look after things until we can track Flynn down. He’s going to come in and take over.

RHYS

Then let’s get on to it, eh.

THE BUSH

KIRSTY dips some cloth in a puddle.

KIRSTY

Mum.

KIRSTY walks over to SHELLEY and KANE.

KIRSTY

Mum, come on you have to have a sip. Come on. Just a little one. Keep talking to me Kane.

KANE

I’ve forgotten what I was saying.

KIRSTY

You were telling me all about school.

KANE

Aw, well after what happened with Dani I didn’t have much choice. You know, I wanted talk to you.

KIRSTY

What did you expect?

KANE

Well I thought I’d at least get to know you before they made up they minds. I might as well not bothered changing schools.

KIRSTY

Did you really think things would be different at Yabbie Creek?

KANE

Yeah, I thought I’d get a second chance.

KIRSTY

Trust me, they don’t happen. After I left school I did some really stupid things and nobodies letting me forget them.

KANE

Why would you leave school?

KIRSTY

Why not?

KANE

Well, you had OK grades didn’t you, one of the best looking chicks there, heaps of friends. You had it made and shaved.

KIRSTY

Yeah, but after that I made one really big mistake and I know what you’re talking about with people not giving you a second chance. So, what else? Keep talking.

DON’S HOUSE

JUNE, SEB and SAM are in the kitchen.

JUNE

OK, now. No wisecracks from you two. We take our lead from Donald’s reaction.

SEB

We take our lead from you. I’m not going out there first.

SAM

Me neither.

SEB

It’s called strategy.

DON walks in. JUNE, SEB and SAM walk out the kitchen.

JUNE

Oh, perfect timing. You ready to carve.

DON

Em, yes, yes of course.

JUNE

Sam, may I serve you some salad?

SAM

Just anything that isn’t green.

JUNE

Aw, I bet Sandy doesn’t let you get away with that at home.

SAM

No, she thinks I have to set a good example for Bella.

JUNE

Quite right too. Seb?

SEB

A bit of everything please.

JUNE

That’s more like it. Donald.

DON

The usual, I think.

THE SURF CLUB

JOSH, DANI and RHYS are standing at the counter of the kiosk. FLOSS, FRANK and ALEX stand together.

ALEX

I’m glad it’s Josh and not me. Rhys looks set to blow.

FRANK

Yeah, I don’t blame him. I would too.

FLOSS

Especially with time running out.

FRANK

Do you reckon they’re still alive?

FLOSS

Yeah, but I’m sensing they’re in a bad way. If they’re not found today, I don’t think all three are going to make it.

JOSH

All right, Sal, Thanks again. Sorry to hassle you.

Bye.

JOSH puts the phone.

JOSH

Flynn’s out on a crisis call for the drop-in centre. She said she’d tell him as soon as he get back.

RHYS

Well, are you going to ring his mobile direct?

JOSH

She tried on the other line, but he had the whole thing switched off.

RHYS

So what happens in the mean time?

JOSH

Alf had the whole thing planned out with everyone that’s experienced who knows the area out there searching. Nothing stops Mr. Sutherland. Just because we can’t see it in here doesn’t mean it’s not going on out there.

RHYS

So, who’s where? Show me on the map.

JOSH

All right. Team one are here, team two here, three and four are round here.

DON’S HOUSE

JUNE, DON, SAM and SEB sit at the table.

JUNE

So, why don’t I pop into Yabbie Creek and see what’s available. Maybe bring back some swatches.

DON

Ah, yes, yes. Swatches might be a very good idea.

JUNE

If you’d rather I didn’t I won’t.

DON

No, June, its not that. I want you to feel comfortable and make the place your own. I just find it distracting eating where I normally watch television. I reach for the salt and expect to find the remote.

JUNE

Why don’t the boys and I go shopping this afternoon and find a few bits and pieces that will give you an idea of what it might be like.

SAM

No, I’ll pass if I can. I’m going to go and get a few waves before I hit the road.

JUNE

Why am I not surprised.

SEB

I’m up for it.

DON

You’re right. It’s probably a very good idea. This place has been this way for so long I just can’t imagine it any other way.

JUNE

How was lunch?

DON

Well, apart from odd, good.

JUNE

Oh, Donald’s not happy with it, he’s uncomfortable and that’s not what this is about so it goes back the way it was.

SEB

Are you sure you don’t want to leave it like this just for one more day? I kind of like it.

SAM

Yeah, just one more day.

JUNE

It goes back the way it was. Thank you.

SAM and SEB carry chairs away.

THE SURF CLUB

ALEX is on the phone. FLOSS and FRANK stand beside him.

ALEX

OK, Celia. Thanks for the call.

Hey, is there anything that I can do here?

OK, well give me a call if you think of something, OK.

Bye.

ALEX puts the phone down. DON walks in.

ALEX

He’s in surgery. It could take a while. Apparently it was a pretty bad break.

DON

What’s happened?

ALEX

Alf fell off a ladder and busted his leg.

RADIO

SES one, this is ground team three, we’ve completed the current designated search area. Over.

JOSH

Ah, Roger, Jacko, your groups next assigned area is delta four, check.

RADIO

Copy that Josh. Delta four, over and out.

RHYS

Where’s that?

JOSH

Aw, it runs from here to here.

RHYS

And where are they?

JOSH

Aw, they’re up here.

RHYS

Well I reckon they’d be better off searching there.

JOSH

Well delta four is there next assigned area. You know, we can go changing the plans.

RHYS

Give me some credit Josh. I am not an idiot.

DANI

Dad, come on.

RHYS

Well, I know the way my wife thinks. She wouldn’t go that way. This area’s higher.

JOSH

Well, yeah.

RHYS

Well, that’s where Shelley would go. When she’s got a problem, she just likes to be able to see everything.

JOSH

Mr. Sutherland, there are three people out there, not just one. We’ve got to stick to the plans right.

RHYS

Even though you know it’s wrong.

DANI

Dad, can you please stop this.

JOSH

I know you’re stressed and I understand why, but if we send the guys out there now they may not come back in time. It will be dark soon.

RHYS

Yeah, which is exactly why we’ve got to get cracking. I mean, do you think Shelley and Kirsty are going to last other night? I mean, we don’t even know if they’re still alive.

THE BUSH

KIRSTY, KANE and SHELLEY are there.

KIRSTY

Mum, can you hear me. Mum, you’ve got to drink. So you were telling me about your folks.

KANE

I could never really work mum out. Em, dad, was a cool kind of a guy when he was off the booze. When he was drinking it was like he owned you. He treated mum like dirt.

KIRSTY

Well why didn’t she just walk?

KANE

Where to?

KIRSTY

Anywhere. Didn’t you say that you had an auntie or something in Yabbie. Why didn’t she just go there?

KANE

Yeah, dad would have dragged her back.

KIRSTY

No offence, but you dad sounds like a real big jerk. Oh, no.

KANE

What’s wrong?

KIRSTY

Her pulse has slowed down, it was going really fast before and she’s like red hot. How are you doing?

KANE

I can’t move my arm.

KIRSTY

How long till sundown?

KANE

Too long. Not long enough.

KIRSTY

Hang in there mum. It will be OK.

DON’S HOUSE

JUNE and SEB are there.

JUNE

These curtains are a real bargain. I’d never of thought of checking out St. Vinnie’s.

SEB

You’ve got to get your timing right, but when you do, it’s bargain city. Mum and I always used to go.

JUNE

I’m very honoured that you shared that with me.

SEB

It’s no biggie.

JUNE

You still miss her a lot, don’t you?

SEB

I don’t think I’m ever going to get over it. I used to, but it’s like the more time that goes on, the more I miss her. Not all the time, but when I do miss her I really miss her.

JUNE

That doesn’t mean that there won’t be other people coming into your life that you won’t love just as much, but just for different reasons. Different qualities. This is just a very clumsy way of me trying to reassure you that I don’t see myself as a mother figure. I just want to be your friend.

SEB

Thank you.

SAM walks in.

SAM

Aw, those waves were great. If I wasn’t so keen to see Sandy and Bella I’d stick around for another day.

JUNE

Board outside. Wipe your feet before you come in please.

SAM

You really have settled in, haven’t you?

JUNE

Yours or Dons?

SEB

Yeah, mine. You’re not going to play that are you?

JUNE

Why not? That’s what they’re for?

SEB

Yeah, but that’s only allowed when gramps is out.

JUNE

Well, perfect timing, he is out and if he happens to come back while it’s playing well he’s in great danger of having his taste changed. OK, let’s get this makeover on the road.

THE SURF CLUB

DANI and RHYS sit at a table. FLOSS and FRANK stand together.

FLOSS

Doesn’t seem right going like this.

FRANK

Well could you do any good if you stayed. So let me drop you off at your grandsons place like we planned and if you have any flashes you can pick up the phone.

FLOSS

I’d like to say goodbye to the Sutherlands, but now doesn’t seem the time to intrude.

FLOSS and FRANK walk out.

DANI

You’re doing this on your own when you don’t have to.

RHYS

How else am I supposed to? You know, if I don’t keep a lid on this I’m not going to make and I don’t want to let anyone else down.

DANI

Who have you let down?

RHYS

Your mum, I didn’t get to her time, Jade, you, Brodie. I’ve wanted to be there for you and I know I haven’t been. It’s just I think if I let go enough to reach out I won’t be able to stop and the last thing you guys need is me falling to pieces.

DANI

No, dad. What we need OK, is you. just you.

DON’S HOUSE

DON, SEB, SAM and JUNE are there.

DON

Em, I hope you’re not spending too much money June. These curtains do look rather expensive.

JUNE

I’m not prepared to reveal my sources, but someone put me onto a very good deal. What do you think?

DON

Oh, I like it I think.

SAM

That’s just as well. This place has been a bunker of beige for ages.

DON

Who asked you and you’ve never complained before anyway?

SAM

I just assumed you’d be a beige kind of guy.

JUNE

Should we have a look at the samples and see what we might like to use.

DON

On one condition, the music doesn’t come with it.

JUNE

Done.

SEB

Told you.

JUNE

The secret of being a good bargainer is having something up your sleeve that you are willing to lose.

DON

Now why do I feel I’ve just been done like a dinner as Alf Stewart would say.

JUNE

Because you have, but you’re about to get over it. While you were out Travis rang. Rebecca has had a baby so you are a grandfather again.

DON

That’s wonderful news.

JUNE

Congratulations.

DON

Thank you.

JUNE

And that means you are a cousin so congratulations. I’m not quite sure what it makes you, but congratulations anyway.

DON

Sam can be the adopted cousin.

JUNE

Yeah, so here’s to the very special head of the extended Fisher clan. Long may he reign.

SEB

To gramps.

SAM

To Uncle Donald.

JUNE

To Donald.

DON

Cheers.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BRODIE and JADE are in a bedroom.

BRODIE

I’m just going to the surf club. You know, get out of here for a bit. Do you want to come?

JADE

I’ll just finish doing this.

BRODIE

Won’t be long.

BRODIE walks out. JADE picks a pillow, cuddles it and starts crying.

THE BUSH

KIRSTY, KANE and SHELLEY are there.

KIRSTY

Kane, Kane. You can’t go to sleep. Wake up.

KANE

I’m too tired.

KIRSTY

Come on Kane. Please, talk to me. Em, tell me. Why do you keep visiting your brother in jail when he bashed you up all the time?

KANE

Because he’s my brother.

KIRSTY

Come on Kane. Talk to me. Because he’s your brother’s not good enough.

KANE

He’s like the only family I’ve got. He used to beat on me, but he used to look out for me more than mum and dad. You’re lucky like that.

KIRSTY

How?

KANE

You and your family are tight.

KIRSTY

Last time I spoke to my mum I told her I hated her. How tight is that? Mum, you’ve got to get better so I can tell you it’s not true. OK, Kane, tell me more about your folks.

KANE is asleep.

KIRSTY

Kane, Kane, Kane, Kane, wake up. Kane, wake up please. Kane wake up please.

A helicopter flies overhead.

KIRSTY

Hang on.

KIRSTY jumps about at the giant X.

KIRSTY

Hey. hey, over here. Come back. Hey, hey.

HELICOPTER

This is one. This is Lifesaver one. We have a sighting. Can we send coastal patrol to assist. Over.

KIRSTY runs back to KANE and SHELLEY.

KIRSTY

Hang on mum. It’s OK. They’re here. Kane, please don’t do this.
