We’ll be out again first thing in the morning. JADEMr. Stewart, can’t we search with lights or something? ALFLove, if I sent more people out there in the dark now, they’d either get injured or lost or maybe even both. Then we’d have more people out there to find and less people to look for them. FLYNNHey, listen. They’ve probably made it ashore. Paris and I reckon we saw them make it with Sal. RHYSOh, let’s got to the hospital love. See if we can bring your sister home tonight. BRODIE and DANI cuddle.DON’S HOUSESAM and DON are there.SAMWhen I was up doing the surfing in Queensland I heard about these fishermen who’s boat sunk. They used their eske to stay afloat and then they drifted in the currents till they got washed. Five days before they got picked up. DONThat’s quite a story. You must be exhausted. JUNENot too exhausted to eat I hope. There’s a chicken curry with you name on it. SAMAw, have I got time for a quick shower? JUNEAbsolutely. It’ll be on the table by the time you’re finished. THE HELICOPTERThe next morning the helicopter searches the shore.
THE SURF CLUBFLYNN, SAM, ALF, RHYS and MATT are there.ALFThe chopper sighted an arrow here on the beach about two k’s south of where we picked Irene Roberts up yesterday. FLYNNWell, with any luck they’re just looking for a bit of shelter and they would have stuck to the creek. ALFYeah, that’s what we’re counting on. With John working his way up from the beach and you working your way back towards the coast we should have this whole area covered by dark. SAMWe’ll go and get the truck ready. RHYSWho do you want me to go with? ALFI’m sorry mate. You’re not trained. I can’t let you go. RHYSYeah, but that arrow might have been made by Shelley or Kirsty. Come on Alf. You know I’ve got to do something. ALFMate, I’m sorry. I’m really sorry, but you’re more use here, trust me. ALF walks away. RHYS turns around and talks to DON.RHYSHow am I going to face the girls? I should be out there looking for their mum and their sister. I mean, I don’t want to let them down. Not again. DONRhys, we’re lucky enough to have a team doing just that, but you’re the only one capable of being a father to them. RHYSSometimes I think they’re stronger than me. DONYes, well appearing strong and being strong are two very different things. RHYSI might go home. DONGo on. Why don’t you do that? I’ll keep an eye on things. RHYS leaves and JUNE walks in.DONWell it’s a bit of a role reversal after last night, isn’t it? JUNEDid that have anything to do with your disappearance this morning? DONNo, no, no. I let you sleep in because; well I’ve been placing an unfair burden on you lately. JUNEIs that right? Donald, you just don’t get it, do you? What you call an unfair burden, I call an honour. It’s a mark of how far we’ve come. ALF and NOAH look at the boards.NOAHHe’s going to be all right, you know. ALFMate, Blake’s a city boy. He can barely survive at a barbecue.
THE BUSHBLAKE and SOPHIE are sitting down.BLAKEMorning. SOPHIEWhat time is it? How long have you been awake? BLAKEOh, since sun up. Tell you what; this place could do with curtains though. SOPHIEOh, while you’re at it, you can organise a pillow. This rock doesn’t do it for me. Oh, what now? BLAKEWell, we’re lost in the bush. Things can only get better. SOPHIEYeah, well we wouldn’t be lost in the bush if we had stuck to the beat. They stand up.BLAKEAh, so assuming. Oh, come on Soph. I haven’t, you know, called this place home for ten years. I thought I knew where I was. SOPHIENo, I’m sorry. I told Tam I’d call her every night. I’m sure grans made up the excuse, but I just wish I could tell her that I was all right before she starts to think. BLAKENo, you’ll be speaking to her tomorrow before she thinks anything. I think I might have heard a chopper before. SOPHIESo, why didn’t you say? BLAKEOh, it was to far away. At least it means that they’re people out there looking for us and we should stop wasting time and go and head for open ground. Come on. SOPHIEYeah, I’m thinking a burger with the lot. BLAKEOh, yeah, chips and a lot of mushy peas. SOPHIEAnd milkshake, a double proper. BLAKEAnything you like babe. It’s on me.
SUMMER BAY HOUSERHYS, JADE and DANI walk down the stairs.JADESo mum and Kirsty could have made the arrow? RHYSLet’s hope so. Even if they didn’t, it’s still a good sign. BLAKENinety-two what? SOPHIENinety-two footsteps since you’ve mentioned your stupid sunnies. BLAKEI was about to say how amazing it was we were getting on so well given our current situation, but if you’re going to insist. Ahl. If you’re going to insist on counting footsteps I might have to rethink that. SOPHIEYeah, well don’t mention you’re stupid sunnies and I promise no more counting. BLAKELook, OK, you’ve got a deal. You know, I reckon they should make couples who are thinking of tying the knot spend a few days together like this, see if the relationship holds out. SOPHIEThey made a game show about that, except the couples never usually got together. BLAKEHave we been here before? I’m serious. I think we’re going round in circles here. Sally. BLAKE runs away. SOPHIE goes over on her ankle. BLAKE meets SALLY and they run back to SOPHIE.BLAKEHey. SOPHIEAhl. BLAKEHey, are you OK? SOPHIEYeah. Have you seen anyone? Carly? Flynn? Irene, that’s wonderful. IRENEI can’t believe it June. I mean, who’d have thunk a flippin’ shipwreck brought us together. I mean, all this pussyfooting round each other, wondering if it was the right thing to, worrying about everyone except ourselves. I never thought after Ken, I could feel this happy. NICK and HAYLEY stand together.HAYLEYParis, well I don’t know. I mean, wahl, I never thought of them like that. Since when? NICKSince they came back. HAYLEYOh, she does look a lot happier. SALLYAh, she’s just dehydrated and suffering from the effects of the heat. Any longer though and it could get serious. We just need help. BLAKEListen, I’ll go and get help. SALLYWell, where would you head? BLAKEWell that way. SALLYThat would take you straight back to the beach. We need to head northwest, where the sun goes down at this time of year. We should get back to old Yabbie Creek road by nightfall. SOPHIEOh. BLAKE and SALLY run over to SOPHIE.BLAKEWhat is it? What is it? SOPHIECramp. SALLYYeah, you’ve got a heat cramp. You’re dehydrated. SOPHIEI know, like Tam, but see Blake, just spending time with you and your confidence that you can cope with anything life throws at you it’s made me, it’s made me start to think. You know, maybe, I should take that holiday or maybe I should accept that date. BLAKEWell hearing that makes almost drowning and starving almost worth it. FLYNNHello Blake. Sophie, are you there? Keep them safe and don’t let them be scared. Help Mr. Stewart find them, because it’s not the same without them here. I miss the sound of Kirsty sleeping in my room at night and I even miss her borrowing my things without asking, and we all miss mum, just the sound of her voice. We need her here, but it’s especially hard on dad because they love each other so much and he looks so sad without her. I know that we have had a lot of problems, but give us a chance to be a family again. RHYS starts to cry. |
