THE SURF CLUB

CARLY cuddles ALF. MATT is there.

ALF

Oh, it’s good to see you love.

MATT

Thanks Alf.

ALF

Thank you mate. No problem at all. Now, you didn’t happen to see young Blake?

IRENE, NICK and NOAH stand around HAYLEY.

IRENE

Hayley, love. Thank god you’re safe.

NICK

Trust you to leave it to the last minute.

HAYLEY

Come here.

NICK and HAYLEY cuddle.

NOAH

Hey princess.

NOAH and HAYLEY cuddle.

NOAH

I don’t know what happened. You know, one minute I had you and then you’re gone. I kept looking and I couldn’t see you and I was so scared.

HAYLEY

Noah, it’s OK. I’m here. I’m safe.

NOAH

Never going to let you go again.

IRENE starts to cry.

IRENE
Look at me.

DON and JUNE stand together.

DON

It’s been almost twenty hours.

JUNE

Seb’s tough. He will make it.

ALF

If I could have you attention for a minute, please folks. There’s no easy way to say this, em, but because we’re losing light I’m going to have to call off the search tonight. We’ll be out again first thing in the morning.

JADE

Mr. Stewart, can’t we search with lights or something?

ALF

Love, if I sent more people out there in the dark now, they’d either get injured or lost or maybe even both. Then we’d have more people out there to find and less people to look for them.

FLYNN

Hey, listen. They’ve probably made it ashore. Paris and I reckon we saw them make it with Sal.

RHYS

Oh, let’s got to the hospital love. See if we can bring your sister home tonight.

RHYS and JADE walk away.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS, JADE and JOSH are there. BRODIE cuddles DANI.

BRODIE

I’m so glad that you’re all right.

DANI

I’m fine.

RHYS

Yeah, to come home. You still need to get plenty of rest.

BRODIE

I was going to heat up some lasagne. Does any one want some? Josh?

JOSH

Ah, that would be great Brods, yeah, thanks.

BRODIE

Yep. Have you eaten Rhys?

RHYS

No, no, but you go ahead. I want to see what else needs to go in the wash. Don’t want the salts ruining these clothes.

RHYS leaves.

JADE

I’ll set the table.

DANI

Where do you want me?

BRODIE

Ah, you can watch while I make a salad. You all right. I was going to make a Greek salad originally, but then I remembered that Rhys doesn’t like olives so, em, now I’m just going to make a tomato salad and maybe with some fetta, avocado if we’ve got some.

DANI

I have never seen waves that big. I don’t know how mum.

BRODIE and DANI cuddle.

DON’S HOUSE

SAM and DON are there.

SAM

When I was up doing the surfing in Queensland I heard about these fishermen who’s boat sunk. They used their eske to stay afloat and then they drifted in the currents till they got washed. Five days before they got picked up.

DON

That’s quite a story. You must be exhausted.

JUNE

Not too exhausted to eat I hope. There’s a chicken curry with you name on it.

SAM

Aw, have I got time for a quick shower?

JUNE

Absolutely. It’ll be on the table by the time you’re finished.

SAM leaves.

DON

Thanks June.

JUNE

Got to feed the hungry hordes. Better get started on those veggies or they won’t be finished.

DON and JUNE go into the kitchen.

DON

Can I do something?

JUNE

Peel the carrots if you like while I do the spuds. Is Sam a chips or mash man?

DON

Sam, Sam. Sam likes chips. It’s Seb.

DON starts to cry.

JUNE

Oh Don.

DON

Not Seb. Not Seb.

THE HELICOPTER

The next morning the helicopter searches the shore.

THE SURF CLUB

FLYNN, SAM, ALF, RHYS and MATT are there.

ALF

The chopper sighted an arrow here on the beach about two k’s south of where we picked Irene Roberts up yesterday.

FLYNN

Well, with any luck they’re just looking for a bit of shelter and they would have stuck to the creek.

ALF

Yeah, that’s what we’re counting on. With John working his way up from the beach and you working your way back towards the coast we should have this whole area covered by dark.

SAM

We’ll go and get the truck ready.

RHYS

Who do you want me to go with?

ALF

I’m sorry mate. You’re not trained. I can’t let you go.

RHYS

Yeah, but that arrow might have been made by Shelley or Kirsty. Come on Alf. You know I’ve got to do something.

ALF

Mate, I’m sorry. I’m really sorry, but you’re more use here, trust me.

ALF walks away. RHYS turns around and talks to DON.

RHYS

How am I going to face the girls? I should be out there looking for their mum and their sister. I mean, I don’t want to let them down. Not again.

DON

Rhys, we’re lucky enough to have a team doing just that, but you’re the only one capable of being a father to them.

RHYS

Sometimes I think they’re stronger than me.

DON

Yes, well appearing strong and being strong are two very different things.

RHYS

I might go home.

DON

Go on. Why don’t you do that? I’ll keep an eye on things.

RHYS leaves and JUNE walks in.

DON

Well it’s a bit of a role reversal after last night, isn’t it?

JUNE

Did that have anything to do with your disappearance this morning?

DON

No, no, no. I let you sleep in because; well I’ve been placing an unfair burden on you lately.

JUNE

Is that right? Donald, you just don’t get it, do you? What you call an unfair burden, I call an honour. It’s a mark of how far we’ve come.

ALF and NOAH look at the boards.

NOAH

He’s going to be all right, you know.

ALF

Mate, Blake’s a city boy. He can barely survive at a barbecue.

THE BUSH

BLAKE and SOPHIE are sitting down.

BLAKE

Morning.

SOPHIE

What time is it? How long have you been awake?

BLAKE

Oh, since sun up. Tell you what; this place could do with curtains though.

SOPHIE

Oh, while you’re at it, you can organise a pillow. This rock doesn’t do it for me. Oh, what now?

BLAKE

Well, we’re lost in the bush. Things can only get better.

SOPHIE

Yeah, well we wouldn’t be lost in the bush if we had stuck to the beat.

They stand up.

BLAKE

Ah, so assuming. Oh, come on Soph. I haven’t, you know, called this place home for ten years. I thought I knew where I was.

SOPHIE

No, I’m sorry. I told Tam I’d call her every night. I’m sure grans made up the excuse, but I just wish I could tell her that I was all right before she starts to think.

BLAKE

No, you’ll be speaking to her tomorrow before she thinks anything. I think I might have heard a chopper before.

SOPHIE

So, why didn’t you say?

BLAKE

Oh, it was to far away. At least it means that they’re people out there looking for us and we should stop wasting time and go and head for open ground. Come on.

SOPHIE

Yeah, I’m thinking a burger with the lot.

BLAKE

Oh, yeah, chips and a lot of mushy peas.

SOPHIE

And milkshake, a double proper.

BLAKE

Anything you like babe. It’s on me.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS, JADE and DANI walk down the stairs.

JADE

So mum and Kirsty could have made the arrow?

RHYS

Let’s hope so. Even if they didn’t, it’s still a good sign. It means that still people out there waiting to be found. Look, em, I’ve really need to get back to the kiosk. They need me there.

DANI

Dad, there’s storm damage around the place, OK. Some repairs need doing.

BRODIE is in the kitchen.

RHYS

Can you manage for a bit? Just fill any complaints and just give them their money back, all right. Now I really need to get going, all right. You can see me down at the kiosk later if you need me.

RHYS looks for his keys. DANI gives them to him.

RHYS

Thanks.

DANI

Dad, you’re tired and you’re stressed, OK. Just let me do the kiosk.

RHYS

Sweetheart, I’ve got to help, all right. Just do my bit. It’s all I can do. Now, you girls know where I am if you need me.

RHYS leaves.

THE BUSH

SOPHIE and BLAKE are walking through the bush.

BLAKE

I think we should find some water up here. It looks a little bit greener. Oh man, I wish I had my sunnies.

SOPHIE

Aw, ninety-one, ninety-two.

BLAKE

Ninety-two what?

SOPHIE

Ninety-two footsteps since you’ve mentioned your stupid sunnies.

BLAKE

I was about to say how amazing it was we were getting on so well given our current situation, but if you’re going to insist. Ahl. If you’re going to insist on counting footsteps I might have to rethink that.

SOPHIE

Yeah, well don’t mention you’re stupid sunnies and I promise no more counting.

BLAKE

Look, OK, you’ve got a deal. You know, I reckon they should make couples who are thinking of tying the knot spend a few days together like this, see if the relationship holds out.

SOPHIE

They made a game show about that, except the couples never usually got together.

BLAKE

Have we been here before? I’m serious. I think we’re going round in circles here. Sally.

BLAKE runs away. SOPHIE goes over on her ankle. BLAKE meets SALLY and they run back to SOPHIE.

BLAKE

Hey.

SOPHIE

Ahl.

BLAKE

Hey, are you OK?

SOPHIE

Yeah. Have you seen anyone? Carly? Flynn?

SALLY

No, not since the boat went down. Here, have some water.

BLAKE

I told you I’d get you some water. Now, come on, come on.

SOPHIE

I can’t walk. I can’t walk.

THE SURF CLUB

RHYS and ALF are there.

ALF

Mate, if you want to take advantage of the lull and check on things at home. I can get young Noah to look after the kiosk.

RHYS

No, no, no. It’s like you said this morning Alf. I’m most use here.

PARIS and IRENE walk in together.

IRENE

I tell you what. You’re lucky the school got off so lightly when you see how hard other places got hit.

PARIS

Yeah. Could you look at getting us new trees to replace the ones we lost?

IRENE

Consider it done. Oh, look, Hayley’s here. Oh look, me and Nick can get a lift back with her. You should get back to work.

PARIS

I hope you’re sure. Thank you for your company here today. I’ve enjoyed myself.

IRENE

Yep, me too. So, see you tonight then.

PARIS

See you tonight.

PARIS leaves and is followed by NICK. IRENE speaks to JUNE who is behind the counter.

JUNE

Well.

IRENE

Oh gee. Not a child.

JUNE

The body language was speaking volumes and it wasn’t talking to itself either. Come on. Tell me everything.

IRENE

Oh, I suppose things did kind of happen out there.

JUNE

I knew it. Irene, that’s wonderful.

IRENE

I can’t believe it June. I mean, who’d have thunk a flippin’ shipwreck brought us together. I mean, all this pussyfooting round each other, wondering if it was the right thing to, worrying about everyone except ourselves. I never thought after Ken, I could feel this happy.

NICK and HAYLEY stand together.

HAYLEY

Paris, well I don’t know. I mean, wahl, I never thought of them like that. Since when?

NICK

Since they came back.

HAYLEY

Oh, she does look a lot happier. Oh, you’re not still funny about her seeing someone are you?

NICK

No, Hayley. I’m worried. OK, she’s heaps older than him.

HAYLEY

So?

NICK

Well, so, what if it turns serious and he ends up leaving in three weeks. She’s going to end up being real hurt.

THE BUSH

SOPHIE, BLAKE and SALLY are there.

BLAKE

Oh, I just made a big cross up there.

SALLY

Oh, great. I made an arrow back on the beach so hopefully they’ll see one of our signs. How does that feel?

SOPHIE

Oh, better. Thanks.

BLAKE

Do you think it’s broken?

SALLY

I think it’s just a sprain.

SOPHIE

I’m such a clutso, guys.

SALLY

One more apology from you and you will be. I am going to find something for you to rest your ankle on.

BLAKE

Oh, I’ll come and give you a hand. Oh Soph, don’t go anywhere. Hey, hey, hey, is Sophie’s ankle bad, do you think?

SALLY

Ah, she’s just dehydrated and suffering from the effects of the heat. Any longer though and it could get serious. We just need help.

BLAKE

Listen, I’ll go and get help.

SALLY

Well, where would you head?

BLAKE

Well that way.

SALLY

That would take you straight back to the beach. We need to head northwest, where the sun goes down at this time of year. We should get back to old Yabbie Creek road by nightfall.

SOPHIE

Oh.

BLAKE and SALLY run over to SOPHIE.

BLAKE

What is it? What is it?

SOPHIE

Cramp.

SALLY

Yeah, you’ve got a heat cramp. You’re dehydrated. Quick, grab some more water.

BLAKE

Look, look, em. I going to stay. You go.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE, HAYLEY and NICK are there.

HAYLEY

So, are you two serious?

IRENE

Well, em, love we’re just talking a couple of dinners to start with. I’m not rushing in to something, but he makes me happy and I want to give it a chance and I really want you guys to do the same.

HAYLEY

Well, I think it’s great.

IRENE

Nick.

NICK

Does anything I say make a difference?

IRENE

Em, well, I’m going to keep seeing him if that’s what you mean.

NICK

Well, I’ve got nothing to say then,

NICK walks into his room.

THE SURF CLUB

ALF is on his radio to FLYNN.

FLYNN

We’re in some pretty dense scrub right now, over.

ALF

Any sign, over?

FLYNN

Nothing yet. If we just move out of the scrub we might get a better idea of the best place to head, over.

ALF

Keep in touch. Over and out.

CARLY walks in.

CARLY

Anything?

ALF

No and we’re losing light.

RHYS

What about John’s lot? Any news there?

ALF

Sorry mate.

DON and JUNE sit together.

DON

It’ll be dark soon and cold.

JUNE

Why don’t we go home? There are plenty of volunteers. You’ve been here since dawn.

DON

No, I can’t. I can’t June. I can’t give up on him. Not while he’s still out there.

BRODIE and DANI are with RHYS.

DANI

Dad, we organised a hut for Colleen.

RHYS

Oh, good, good.

BRODIE

Yep, and here’s some repairs for the other vans.

RHYS

Yeah. I’ll look at it later.

DANI

Dad, can you please come home? We need you at home.

RHYS

I’ll be home sweetheart. Look, I appreciate what you’re girls doing. I really do.

SEB walks in. JUDE sees him..

JUDE

Seb, how did you get here?

SEB

I’ve been walking for two days.

RHYS

On your own?

SEB

Yes, and my feet kill.

JUNE hugs him.

JUNE

I knew you’d make it.

ALF

We better get you checked out young fella.

SEB

Wait.

DON and SEB hug.

THE BUSH

SAM, FLYNN and MATT are looking at a map. ALF can be heard over the radio.

ALF

Young Seb just come in alive and well, over.

FLYNN

OK, that’s great news. Now looking at the map, there’s a ridge nearby, once we get there we’ll have a

really great vantage point, over.

ALF

Not now you won’t. We’re losing light. I want everyone heading back here, over.

FLYNN

One more hour. That’s all we need Alf, over.

ALF

You’d end up walking in the dark mate. Sorry, over and out.

FLYNN

No, we’re so close.

MATT

No, we don’t know that mate. Not for sure.

FLYNN

Well I do.

SALLY

Over here.

FLYNN

Sal, Sal.

SALLY and FLYNN run towards each other.

SALLY

Flynn.

FLYNN

Are you OK?

SALLY

Yeah, I’m fine. Sophie’s hurt her ankle. She’s with Blake.

FLYNN

OK, where are they?

SALLY

They’re in the next valley. I marked the way, like you showed me to. I’ll take you to her.

FLYNN

No, no. You’re not going anywhere. You got the map?

SAM

Yeah.

FLYNN

I knew it was going to be a good day.

SALLY

So did I.

DON’S HOUSE

DON comes through carrying a basin. SEB sits on the settee. JUNE is also there.

DON

Right, there we are. Now, it’s camomile and what?

JUNE

Tea tree.

DON

Yes, tea tree. Yes, it soothes and heals apparently.

SEB

Thanks guys, but, please, I can’t stand all this attention.

JUNE

Well, how about some food? Charlotte said to keep it light, so I thought, maybe, grilled chicken and some mash. I gather that’s your favourite.

SEB

Sounds great, but cool it with the silver service or I might get used to you two pampering me.

JUNE

Well, I hope you mean that because it looks like I might be staying for a while.

DON

Yes, yes. I’ve invited June to stay for as long as she wants.

SEB

About time.

DON

I know you only moved in here to look after me originally, but, well, I was hoping that you might consider making it home on a permanent basis.

SEB

I’d like that.

THE BUSH

SOPHIE and BLAKE are there.

BLAKE

Ah, there you go.

SOPHIE

Oh, thanks. It’s heaps better.

BLAKE

It looks like it now. Now, how about some of that bush tucker that Sally left behind.

SOPHIE

Bush tucker is fancy way of saying bugs and moss. No thanks. I’ll pass on it and make dirty on the promise you made to me. I wonder how she’s going. It’ll be getting dark soon.

BLAKE

You mean Sal Dundee. She’ll be there before you know it. She thought I’d be the one riding off to the rescue, but there you go, uh. She always had a changing guard’s perspective on things.

SOPHIE

Hey, you’ve done that for me.

BLAKE

What do you mean?

SOPHIE

Well, if it wasn’t for you I might never had realised how much I put my life on hold.

BLAKE

I thought you were pretty happy Soph.

SOPHIE

Yeah, you know, I am. The town’s great. We love our place. I’m happy at work.

BLAKE

I can here, but in there somewhere.

SOPHIE

Spending time with, who knows what tomorrow will bring has made me realise I know exactly what I’m doing week after week.

BLAKE

So, you’ve got a routine.

SOPHIE

Blake. I’ve hardly left my suburb in ten years.

BLAKE

How come?

SOPHIE

Getting pregnant by accident. Kind of had to have planned everything since. Look, all I can say is someone up there has got a pretty good sense of humour. Couldn’t get anymore unplanned than this.

BLAKE

Yeah, well, sometimes unplanned things can be the best.

SOPHIE

I know, like Tam, but see Blake, just spending time with you and your confidence that you can cope with anything life throws at you it’s made me, it’s made me start to think. You know, maybe, I should take that holiday or maybe I should accept that date.

BLAKE

Well hearing that makes almost drowning and starving almost worth it.

FLYNN

Hello Blake. Sophie, are you there?

BLAKE

Yeah, mate. We’re over here.

THE BEACH HOUSE

IRENE and HAYLEY are there. NICK watches the TV.

IRENE

Nick, for god’s sake. Will you get off your bum, turn that ruddy thing off and give you sister a hand. I just heard his car.

NICK

Aw, how hard can it be setting a table?

IRENE goes to the door.

IRENE

Coming.

PARIS comes in carrying flowers.

IRENE

Hello. Thank you. They’re lovely and you can relax or not, as the case may be.

PARIS

In which case this is also for you.

They kiss.

HAYLEY

I really don’t think you need to worry Nick. I’ve got a good feeling about this.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS walks to the door and stop. He then walks in. DANI and JADE are there.

DANI

Any news?

RHYS

They found Blake and Sophie out there. Sally’s markers led straight to them. They were the one’s that made the arrow on the beach.

BRODIE is in the kitchen.

JADE

Any sign of anyone else?

RHYS

Not yet. They’re going to start again first thing in the morning. Right, I’ll telephone these quotes now I can give them my full attention.

JADE

Ah, dad, wait. Can we say a prayer together?

They all sit on the couch.

JADE

Dear God, please look after mum and Kirsty. Keep them safe and don’t let them be scared. Help Mr. Stewart find them, because it’s not the same without them here. I miss the sound of Kirsty sleeping in my room at night and I even miss her borrowing my things without asking, and we all miss mum, just the sound of her voice. We need her here, but it’s especially hard on dad because they love each other so much and he looks so sad without her. I know that we have had a lot of problems, but give us a chance to be a family again.

RHYS starts to cry.
