Scripts - Episode 3277

SALLY’S HOUSE

JUDE and NOAH carry in a chest of drawers.

NOAH

Ah, it would have been good to, ah, take the drawers out first.

JUDE

Yeah. It would be fine if you kept tipping it forward. Just stop it, all right.

JUDE and NOAH carry the chest of drawers into the bedroom. SALLY, HAYLEY and CHARLOTTE are in the kitchen.

CHARLOTTE

Let’s look on the bright side. If the sink needs unblocking, electrical appliances need fixing. We have an on-site handy man.

HAYLEY

Looking at your watch isn’t going to get Steven here any sooner.

SALLY

Yeah, I’m to go and finish.

JUDE and NOAH walk out the bedrooms.

NOAH

So, em, you fixed all your stuff?

JUDE

Yes, I am.

NOAH

Well, em, can we have it because I’ve got nothing.

JUDE

Yeah, you’d only wreck it anyway.

CHARLOTTE and JUDE cuddle.

JUDE

I guess I can officially say I’ve moved in.

CHARLOTTE

How does it feel?

JUDE

How does it look like?

There is a knock on the door. HAYLEY opens it.

HAYLEY

Hi. Come in.

STEVEN walks in.

STEVEN

Hi. Thanks.

HAYLEY

Eh, how was the flight?

STEVEN

The flight was long.

JUDE, CHARLOTTE and NOAH walk up to the door.

HAYLEY

Yeah. Oh, em, I guess I better do the introductions.

SALLY walks out the bedrooms.

SALLY

Hey, Steven.

STEVEN

Hello, little sister.

SALLY

Hello. Aw, big brother. How are you?

SALLY and STEVEN cuddle.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

ALEX and LEAH stand at the counter. COLLEEN drags LANCE in.

COLLEEN

Hey, look what the cat dragged in.

LEAH

Lance.

LANCE

Hey, how’s it going?

LEAH

Right now it’s a bit crazy.

COLLEEN

Aw, sorry I’m a bit late, but we were up to all hours nattering, weren’t we Lancie? Aw, a bit busy isn’t it. Who are those for?

LEAH

Table four.

ALF walks out the kitchen.

ALF

I’ll be back in a couple of hours.

COLLEEN

Aw, where are you off to?

ALF

To pick up Celia.

COLLEEN

Aw, don’t tell me she’s come all the way from Africa just for this sesquicentenary thingy.

ALF and LANCE shake hands. ALF walks out the diner.

LEAH

Yeah, well, she’s already out for some fundraising thingy.

COLLEEN

Aw, she certainly gets about for a missionary.

LANCE and COLLEEN walk away.

LEAH

So, where is it that you’re going?

ALEX

I’m going to Kelli’s all right.

LEAH

Did you finally get in contact with her?

ALEX

No, but I rang up and it’s engaged so I know that she’s at home.

LEAH

Ah.

ALEX

I won’t be long, I promise. OK.

LEAH

Alexi.

ALEX

What?

LEAH

Well, don’t you think that if she wanted to see you she would have been returning all your calls?

ALEX

I don’t care, OK. I just want to make sure. Look, I really care about this girl and I think she overreacted. I mean a portrait with me in it as well. Who cares? It’s not the end of the world? It’s just something that kids do, you know.

LEAH

Well don’t you think she knows her children a little better than you?

ALEX

I just want to talk to her. I’ll be as quick as I can.

ALEX walks out.

SALLY’S HOUSE

SALLY and STEVEN are in the kitchen. HAYLEY and NOAH walk in.

NOAH

See you guys.

HAYLEY

Bye.

SALLY

See you.

HAYLEY and NOAH walk out the kitchen. JUDE and CHARLOTTE walk out the bedrooms. JUDE is carrying a lamp.

JUDE

Oi. Before you go, I have a lamp for the Palace.

JUDE hands NOAH the lamp.

NOAH

Sure you can spare it?

JUDE

Yeah, Charlotte’s already got two so.

HAYLEY

Great. Well maybe we could find a bedside table to put it on. There’s a council pick-up in Yabbie Creek and we’re going to see what we can scavenge.

CHARLOTTE

Are you serious?

HAYLEY

Well yeah. People throw out pretty nifty stuff.

CHARLOTTE

Jude, will you tell them.

JUDE

Yeah, all right. Go to the flat and take whatever you want.

NOAH

Are you serious?

JUDE

You didn’t think I was really going to store it, did you?

HAYLEY

Aw, thank you so much Jude.

JUDE

Yeah, just look after it OK.

NOAH

I will.

JUDE

Yeah.

NOAH and HAYLEY walk out. STEVEN and SALLY are in the kitchen carrying cups.

STEVEN

So, where are all these people you’ve invited going to sleep?

SALLY

Oh, you can share with Frank, em. He’s arriving about lunchtime. Carly’s going to bunk it with me.

JUDE, STEVEN, CHARLOTTE and SALLY sit down at the table.

JUDE

Yeah, and we’re sharing the other room together, so.

STEVEN

So, you two are an item?

SALLY

Yeah, Charlotte’s expecting twins.

STEVEN

Wahl. I guess that makes you an item. Congratulations.

CHARLOTTE

Thank you.

JUDE

Thanks.

SALLY

So, how’s Selina?

STEVEN

She’s upset she couldn’t come, but well, her nursing finals are in two weeks.

SALLY

Does she like Hong Kong?

STEVEN

Loves it.

SALLY

I guess that means you’re not planning on coming back then.

STEVEN

Not in the short term, but, well, when we have kids I want to bring them up in Australia?

SALLY

Oh. When are you getting married?

STEVEN

Well, if it was up to me in a second, but em, Selina doesn’t want to rush into it.

SALLY

How long have you been engaged for now?

STEVEN

OK, but wait until I’m over my jet lag before you start having a go at me.

CHARLOTTE

Why don’t we give the scavengers a hand and let these two catch up?

JUDE

Good idea. We’ll catch you later.

STEVEN

Yep.

CHARLOTTE

See you.

STEVEN

See you.

JUDE and CHARLOTTE leave.

STEVEN

Right, now we’ve got me out the way I want to hear all about this new man in your life.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DANI and SHELLEY are in the living room.

DANI

Mum. I need your help in running something past dad for me.

SHELLEY

Why do I have to do that?

DANI

OK, I know that you’re going to think that I’m crazy. I just have to do this mediation thing again.

SHELLEY

Aw, Dani. Why?

DANI

Because I know what I did wrong and I’m going to do it differently this time.

SHELLEY

Well, I’m sorry, but I think that’s a really, really bad idea.

DANI

Mum I have to do this. OK, it’s the only way I’m going to work through this.

SHELLEY

Dani, it is not the only way. Look what it did to you the last time and the rest of the family.

DANI

I’m sorry. I am. I’m sorry, but it’s just something that I have to do.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

LANCE, LEAH and VJ are in the kitchen.

LANCE

Hey, I’m real sorry about Vinnie, ay. It shouldn’t have happened. He was a good bloke.

LEAH

Yeah. Well he still is.

LANCE

Yeah, yeah. Are you managing?

LEAH

Most of the time. Alex has been fantastic though and all I seem to do in return is give him a hard time.

LANCE

Yeah. Well, what about Vinnie? Is he all right?

LEAH

According to his letters he is?

ALEX walks in.

LEAH

Hey.

ALEX

Hey.

LEAH

Did you see her?

ALEX

No, I must have just missed her.

LEAH

Em, Alexi. This came in the mail for you?

ALEX

Oh, thanks.

ALEX walks into the storeroom.

LANCE

Yeah. I might head over and see Sal.

LEAH

Aw, OK.

LANCE

Hey, you know Vinnie’s going to be all right, don’t you?

LEAH

Yeah, I do. Thank you.

LEAH and LANCE cuddle.

LEAH

See you later.

LANCE walks out the kitchen. ALF and CELIA walk down the stairs.

LEAH

Ah, all settled in?

CELIA

Yes, thank you. Ah, now let me look at this beautiful baby.

CELIA picks up VJ. VJ starts crying.

CELIA

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. It’s only Aunt Celia.

LEAH takes VJ.

LEAH

It’s all right. I’ll grab him. He’s not used to strangers.

CELIA

I can see that.

LEAH

It’s all right baby.

COLLEEN walks in the kitchen.

LEAH

I’m here. It’s all right. Nothing. He’s all settled now. Come on, mummy’s here.

CELIA

I think you’ve got an antisocial baby on your hands.

ALF

Aw, fair go sis. The kid’s not six months old yet.

CELIA

Aw, age has nothing to do with Alfred. It’s very common in western society. Hardly any of it in Africa, though. In the communities that I’ve been working in, well, the children are raised by an extended family. There used to being mothered by more than person.

COLLEEN

Well that’s all very well, but this is Summer Bay and I’ll have you know that Leah is a very good mother.

CELIA

Aw, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean any criticism of you Leah.

LEAH

No, that’s fine.

ALF

Ah, sis, do you still have your coffee blank?

CELIA

Yes.

ALF

Yeah, yeah. Come on. I’ll shout you one before rustle anymore feathers.

ALF and CELIA walk out the kitchen.

CELIA

Well I was merely pointing out an interesting anthropological fact.

ALEX and LEAH are in the kitchen. LEAH is holding VJ.

ALEX

I’ve been dumped. At least it wasn’t by text message.

LEAH

Alexi, I’m really sorry.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DANI and SHELLEY are in the living room. BRODIE is in the kitchen.

SHELLEY

Sweetheart, I know how important this is to you, but there is no way your father is going to give his permission.

DANI, BRODIE and SHELLEY sit at the table.

DANI

I’m not asking his permission.  It is something that I have to do.

SHELLEY

Did Flynn suggest this?

DANI

It was idea mum. Come on, it’s the last thing that I want to do is to hurt you, dad, the twins.

SHELLEY

Then don’t do this. Explore other options instead.

BRODIE

Look, if Dani wants to do this shouldn’t we just do her best to support her.

SHELLEY

Brodie, I thought last time you were totally against the idea.

BRODIE

Well, that was then and I spoke to Dani last night and I listened to what she had to say and, well, now I’ve changed my mind.

SHELLEY

I don’t know why you two think it’s going to be any different. I mean, how do you know you’re not going to come home in the same state you were in last time?

DANI

Because I’m going to approach differently.

BRODIE

Dan, does it really matter what anyone else thinks. Mum, I honestly believe this is the way to go.

SHELLEY

There’s no doubt Flynn agrees.

DANI

I’ve asked him to organise it for lunchtime.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

DANI walks in. FLYNN is in the office. SHELLEY is there.

DANI

Hey.

FLYNN

G’day.

DANI

Is Kane here?

FLYNN

He’s in the bunkroom.

FLYNN and DANI walk out the office.

FLYNN

You going to be OK for a while Shelley?

SHELLEY

Yep. I’ll manage.

DANI walks up to SHELLEY.

DANI

Mum, it’s going to OK.

SHELLEY

Yeah. I hope so sweetheart. I really do.

DANI

Is dad all right?

SHELLEY

Well, I haven’t told him.

DANI

Why?

SHELLEY

Because he’s hardly slept since all this mediation business started and I know it’s hard on you, but it’s hard on him to. It’s hard on the whole family. I’ll tell him when he needs to know.

SHELLEY walks into the office. FLYNN and DANI walk into the bedroom. KANE is sitting on a chair. FLYNN and DANI sit down.

FLYNN

OK, before we get started I want to make one thing very clear. This is about communication, all right. Say what needs to be said, but more importantly listening. Now, if you both aren’t prepared to do that we will call it off now.

KANE

I’m in.

DANI

So am I.

FLYNN

Good, because guys this is the last chance. This won’t happen again. OK, so do we accept the ground rules?

DANI

Em, I’d like to put some questions to Kane to clear up a few things first.

FLYNN

OK. Is that OK with you?

DANI

Before that, I want to apologise for our last meeting. I didn’t come to talk about what happened. I came to get even. I was angry and I wanted you to suffer, so Kane, I’m sorry.

KANE

Apology accepted.

FLYNN

Is that all?

DANI

I don’t want today to be about the past. I want it to be about the truth and em, I want Kane to admit that when he said that he didn’t do anything wrong that he was being honest.

KANE

This isn’t going to work man. I came here the other day, you know, telling the truth. I wasn’t here to tell lies.

DANI

I don’t believe you.

FLYNN

Dani.

KANE

No, all right, OK, let’s talk about what happened. What really happened? Em, you came on to me, you flirted with me, you found excuses to hang around with me; you kissed me. You led me on, you know. You made me believe you were interested. Isn’t that the truth Dani?

FLYNN

Kane, just to let you know. If this gets out of control, man, I will shut it down.

DANI

Yes, Kane. What you just said then. That is true.

KANE

I rest my case.

DANI

What case? Do you honestly believe if a girl likes you then they mean yes?

KANE

Yeah. With you it did.

DANI

Why? Why? What did I do to make you think that?

KANE

The way you acted around me. The way you dressed.

DANI

What? For you? It’s not like I gave you a private showing or anything.

KANE

No, no, maybe not, but it’s obvious you like guys looking at you.

DANI

Because I care about my appearance.

KANE

Come on. You know what kind of messages you were sending out.

DANI

OK, OK, fine. You think I was sending out messages. Let’s look at you, Kane. The way you dress. The way you act. What sort of message are you sending out? What are you saying?

KANE

I don’t know what you are talking about.

FLYNN

No. Do think about that Kane. I mean, most people do present some kind of image to the world.

KANE

All right. You tell me. What am I saying?

DANI

You’re saying tough guy, don’t mess me with me, don’t come to close or you’re going to get hurt.

KANE

Look, I dress the way I dress because I like the way I look and I act tough well that’s because I come from a tough family.

DANI

So I’m wrong.

KANE

Yeah.

DANI

Just like you’re wrong about me.

KANE

No, no. See, I know when a chicks asking for it.

FLYNN

All right, Kane.

DANI

No, it’s OK. It’s OK.

KANE

No, you see, you don’t have to say yes, not the word because you were saying it every other way, loud and clear.

DANI

Even though, I actually said no Kane.

KANE

You know, that’s funny because some people say one thing and they mean another.

DANI

I guess that explains your brother’s behaviour.

KANE

What?

DANI

When he hit you, like, did you ask him not to?

KANE

Yeah.

DANI

Or maybe that’s not what he thought you meant. Maybe what he thought you meant was to keep on hitting you.

KANE

Yeah, yeah, that’s it. Of course he didn’t.

DANI

Well how do you know?

KANE

Because it wasn’t pretty obvious what I meant.

DANI

But it wasn’t obvious what I meant Kane.

KANE

No.

DANI

Or obvious to your brother because that’s what he kept on doing. Were you asking for it?

KANE

What is this man?

DANI

Your father, your father hit you. You must have known the things that made off Kane, but you kept on doing them, didn’t you? Were you asking about them?

KANE

I don’t know what you’re talking about.

DANI

Were you asking for it?

KANE

I don’t know what you’re talking about.

DANI

What I’m talking about Kane is what you said. How some people say one thing and they mean another.

KANE

You see this is different, OK. This is different because I didn’t lie down and let my brother bash me. You know, I thought him, just like I thought my dad, just like I’ve been fighting all my life and if you really wanted to stop me then, then, why didn’t you fight me, uh?

DANI

Do you know what? That is the question that I have been asking myself over and over again. Why didn’t I fight you Kane? Why? Huh.

KANE

Yeah.

DANI

Well was it my fault? Was I passive? Was it my fault?

KANE

Yeah.

DANI

And you know what, I come from a family where if there’s a disagreement, we sit down and we talk about it. We don’t fight each other Kane. We don’t make each other do things that we don’t want to do and you know what; sadly that’s how I’ve been lucky where you haven’t. Tell me; tell me how was saying no to your dad and your brother any different to me saying no to you? What you did was wrong. You know it and I know it. Thanks Flynn.

DANI stands up and walks out the room.

THE SURF CLUB

ALEX sits on a fence. BRODIE walks up to him.

BRODIE

Leah said you’d be here.

ALEX

Told you what happened?

BRODIE

Yeah.

ALEX

I made a real fool out of myself.

BRODIE

No you didn’t.

ALEX

I guess, after Miles died I can’t really work out the real me, you know. It’s like I’m always trying to be someone I’m and that’s probably why it didn’t work out with Kelli. She probably just saw right through me. She was older. She had kids and I was trying to act a bit older and a bit more mature, you know.

BRODIE

Is that so bad?

ALEX

I just wasn’t ready for it. I mean, I was taking on all these extra responsibilities. I had VJ to look after. Her kids. I started to feel like I had to be older than I actually was. Does that make sense?

BRODIE

Yeah, I think so.

ALEX

And now I just, just don’t know who I am anymore.

BRODIE

Well, I know the guy that you were and he was fun and young and sexy. So, if you find him, then send him back because he was a good friend of mine and I miss him.

THE PALACE

DANI and JOSH are in the kitchen.

DANI

I had another session with Kane today.

JOSH

What? Why didn’t you tell me?

They walk through to the living room.

DANI

It was hard enough telling my mum Josh.

JOSH

Well, how did it go?

DANI

It went OK.

JOSH

So, you’re feeling good about it?

DANI

Well, not good, but I feel better. I don’t have to see him anymore.

JOSH

Well, that’s something.

DANI

Are you cool to keep on being patient with me? I just. I feel like I’m going through a process and it’s going to take a bit of time before we take things further.

JOSH

Well, as long as it takes is as long as I’ve got.

DANI

You’re really something, you know.

JOSH

So are you.

SARAH MCKAY DROP-IN CENTRE

KANE and FLYNN are in the kitchen.

KANE

If Dani’s right, what does that make me?

FLYNN

Well maybe that’s something you need to look at. Come to terms with.

KANE

Yeah. Thanks for the coffee. I’ll see you around.

KANE walks out the kitchen.

FLYNN

Kane, if you want to talk, you know where to find me, eh.

KANE walks away. FLYNN walks into the office. SALLY, FRANK and STEVEN walk in.

SALLY

Hey.

FLYNN

Hey.

SALLY

My brothers insisted on meeting you.

FRANK

G’day, Frank.

FLYNN

Frank, g’day.

STEVEN

Steven.

FLYNN

Steven, how are you?

STEVEN

Good.

FLYNN

Flynn.

STEVEN

Yeah.

FRANK

OK. Eh, Sal, we’ll catch you later.

SALLY

What?

STEVEN

Yeah, Flynn. How about we go for a walk or a chat?

SALLY

What is this guys?

FLYNN

I think it might be big brother stuff.

SALLY

Are you OK with that?

FLYNN

Em, yeah. Take me away. Have I got a choice?

FRANK, FLYNN and STEVEN walk away.

THE BEACH

FLYNN, STEVEN and FRANK walk along.

STEVEN

You like it here in bay?

FLYNN

Yeah.

FRANK

Is it a bit like a holiday or do you reckon you’ll hang around?

FLYNN

No, it’s, em, its home as far as I’m concerned.

STEVEN

So you’ve decided to settle down here then?

FLYNN

Can we drop this?

FRANK

Why?

FLYNN

This big brother cross-examination. Really, it’s not necessary.

STEVEN

Well, you might not think so, but Sally’s been hurt before and we don’t want it happening again.

FLYNN

Can I say something?

FRANK

Yeah, sure.

FLYNN

You both know Sal’s been through hell the last six months. I’ve actually lived it with her. I’ve talked to her about dying. I’ve cried with her about the kids that she will never have. You know, I actually know more about that girl than I do about anyone else and, yeah, I do love her. As long as she wants me around I’m going to stay.

STEVEN

I think he’ll do.

FRANK

Yeah.

SALLY

Flynn.

SALLY, LANCE, JUDE and CHARLOTTE walk down the beach to FLYNN, FRANK and STEVEN.

JUDE

Sally thought you might need rescuing.

LANCE

Frank, Steve. How are you mate?

SALLY

Have they been giving you a hard time?

FLYNN

Really.

SALLY

Yeah, I bet they have.

CHARLOTTE

Did he pass?

STEVEN

With flying colours.

SALLY

Oh, good now leave him alone.

FRANK

We haven’t quite finished with him yet.

FRANK and STEVEN grab FLYNN and drag it down the beach.

LANCE

Dunk him.

STEVEN and FRANK dunk FLYNN in the surf. SALLY laughs.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

RHYS, DANI and SHELLEY are in the living room.

RHYS

How come no one ever tells me anything? I mean, I thought we’d agreed to discuss things in this family. What do you think I was going to do?

SHELLEY

Pretty much what you’re doing now.

RHYS

Well do you blame me for being angry?

SHELLEY

No, I don’t blame you. I just wish you’d find another form of communication apart from yelling at people.

RHYS

I don’t just yell at people.

SHELLEY

No, sometimes you simply shut down and don’t talk.

DANI

Can you guys please not fight here?

RHYS

Dan, it’s all right. Look, I’m not like that, am I?

SHELLEY

At the moment, yes.

There is a knock on the door. SHELLEY goes and answers it.

RHYS

You don’t think I’m behaving like that, do you?

SHELLEY answers the door. It’s KANE.

KANE

Can I come in?

SHELLEY

I don’t think that’s a very good idea.

KANE

Please, just for a minute. I won’t cause any trouble.

RHYS walks over to the door..

RHYS

What the hell are you doing here?

SHELLEY

Em, Rhys.

RHYS

What do you want?

KANE

To say I’m sorry. I wish there was something that I could do to show you that I mean it. I don’t know if talking to me did you any good, but it’s made me see things a lot more clearly. You were right. What I did was wrong. I don’t know what else to say.

KANE walks away. SHELLEY runs over towards DANI.

SHELLEY

Aw, sweetheart.

DANI

It’s OK mum. It’s just what I wanted from all of this, you know. Kane to say he was wrong and to know it. It just makes all of this worthwhile.

SHELLEY and DANI cuddle.
