Scripts - Episode 3266

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

DANI and SHELLEY are on the couch.

DANI

You know, I thought I had left it all behind me when I was going out with Will and after all this time, it’s still there. Kane’s still in my head.

SHELLEY

Hey, what is important is what is happening in your life right now.

DANI

You know, Josh is never going to forgive me. I so stuffed up.

There is a knock on the door. IRENE walks in.

IRENE

Morning. Aw, love. Should I come back later?

DANI

No, no, no. Come in.

DANI walks into the kitchen..

IRENE

Shell, I just wanted to check if you and Rhys would be coming to this meet and greet thingy we’ve got for the new headmaster.

SHELLEY

Oh, yes, yes. Of course we’ll be there.

IRENE

Oh, excellent.

SHELLEY

Anything else?

IRENE

No, love, no. I’ll catch you later. Thanks.

SHELLEY

Bye.

IRENE walks out. SHELLEY walks into the kitchen.

SHELLEY

Are you sure you don’t want to talk about what happened last night?

DANI

I can’t do it mum. It’s too weird.

DANI walks out.

DON’S HOUSE

SALLY and DON sit at the table.

DON

What makes you so sure it came from Brett Egan?

SALLY

Well, he does have access to confidential department information and my e-mail address, and why else would he suddenly pop up in Summer Bay asking me and Irene all these questions about the school.

DON

If it was him it must have taken a lot of courage to go out on a limb like this.

SALLY

Yeah. The question is what do we do with it?

DON

We.

JUNE and SEB are in the kitchen. SEB is looking for something in the fridge.

JUNE

Looking for something?

SEB

Snags. Year ten are having a barbie down the beach. Last day of holidays.

JUNE

Oh, my commiserations. Don’t do anything I couldn’t do.

SEB walks out the kitchen. SALLY and DON are sitting at the table.

DON

I want you to promise that you’ll do nothing to involve yourself directly. I don’t want you jeopardising your career.

SALLY

And what about yours?

DON

Oh, mine’s as good as over, but yours is just beginning and you have the potential to be one of the best teachers.

JUNE walks out the kitchen.

JUNE

And that comes from one of the best.

DON

Well, why don’t you let me decide on a course of action?

THE BEACH

JADE and LARA are there. SEB walks up to them.

SEB

Hey, you guys weren’t thinking of starting without me.

JADE

Where have you been? I’ve been starving. I’ll just go and put these on the barbie.

SEB

That’s a blokes job, isn’t it?

JADE

Very funny. Why don’t you guys just chill.

LARA

Actually, I might help you.

SEB walks over to NICK.

SEB

Hey. Bet you’re looking forward to going to school.

NICK

Yeah, like a whole in the head. It wouldn’t be so bad if I could walk.

SEB

You’re supposed to be getting that walking frame thing aren’t you?

NICK

Yeah. I’ve got to talk to the physio tomorrow and em, looks like I won’t be doing any marathons for a while though. Dude, I’d love to be out on one of those things right now.

NICK is looking at a sailing boat.

NICK

Surfing. Anything apart from being stuck in this thing.

SEB watches LARA and JADE.

NICK

How’s things going with Lara?

SEB

Great. She wants me to go  watch her do some Latin American dance stuff.

NICK

So?

SEB

So the minute I’m there she’s going to get me up dancing isn’t she?

NICK

Oh, shame.

SEB

Tell me about it.

LARA

I don’t think he likes me anymore.

JADE

What makes you think that?

LARA

Well, I asked him to come to my dance classes and he doesn’t want to come because he thinks they’re uncool. His excuse anyway. Jade, I kissed him and I’ve never done that before. I must have done something wrong otherwise he wouldn’t be ignoring me like this.

JADE

No way. Seb’s not like that.

LARA

Must be the braces or something.

JADE

That would only be a problem if Seb has them to. Get stuck together.

LARA

Oh.

NICK and SEB watch LARA and JADE.

SEB

Where’s Kirsty?

NICK

I don’t know. Jade said she asked her.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

KIRSTY sits watching the TV. DANI walks in.

KIRSTY

Aw, sis. Do you want to come to that barbecue with me?

DANI

What? The year ten thing.

KIRSTY

Yeah. I can’t go on my own.

DANI

Why not?

KIRSTY

Because everyone’s going to think what a loser I am. They see me with you it will be different.

DANI

Sorry Kirst. I am not in the mood.

KIRSTY

Thanks Dani. I knew I could count on you. I guess you don’t feel so bad about dissing me on the internet now.

KIRSTY walks out. BRODIE walks in.

BRODIE

Dani. How did it go with Josh last night?

DANI

It didn’t.

BRODIE

Oh, what happened?

DANI

We started to and once again, Kane was still in my head. You know Brodie, what am I going to do. I don’t want to lose Josh. He’s too special to me.

SHELLEY and RHYS are outside on the veranda.

RHYS

Oh, em, how’s Dani?

SHELLEY

She’s in there now with Brodie.

RHYS

What happened?

SHELLEY

I don’t know exactly. She was too upset to talk about it, but sounds like things didn’t go the way she planned with Josh.

RHYS

If that kids done anything to hurt her.

SHELLEY

Hey, hey, hey. It’s nothing to do with Josh.

BRODIE

Have you talked to your mum about?

DANI

I tried, but I just couldn’t. I should be able to handle this on my own.

DON’S HOUSE

DON and JUNE are there.

JUNE

What are you going to do with this information that’s landed in Sally’s lap?

DON

I’m not sure.

JUNE

You know, you could use it as leverage to get your job back.

DON

What? Reinstate me or I’ll blow the whistle. No, I don’t think so.

JUNE

Well, why not for heavens sake?

DON and JUNE walk into the kitchen.

DON

Because it’s not necessarily the best thing for the students or the school for that matter.

JUNE

Couldn’t you put yourself first, just this once.

DON

No, no, I couldn’t.  It would mean betraying every principle I ever stood for. Now, you’re disappointed, right.

JUNE

No, on the contrary Don. I’m really disappointed in you.

DON

Mind you I am not totally by the fact that this new information does give me grounds for unfair dismissal.

JUNE

Ah, that’s more like it.

A ROAD

SEB, JADE and LARA walk along. SEB pushes NICK in his wheelchair.

NICK

See you at prison tomorrow boys.

A car is driven along the road.

SEB

Ah, check it out. That is a seriously nice car.

The car stops in front of them. The school new principal, PARIS, is in it.

PARIS

Excuse me. You couldn’t tell me how to get to Oliver Street, could you?

NICK

Nice set of wheels man.

PARIS

Thanks. You too.

SEB

Ah, yeah, well you get down to the end of the street till you hit a roundabout and then you turn right and then it’s your second, no, no, your third to the left.

PARIS

Thanks.

SEB

Yeah, no worries.

PARIS

What school do you go to?

JADE

Summer Bay High.

PARIS

See you tomorrow then. I’m your new principle.

PARIS drives away.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

BRODIE and SHELLEY are in the kitchen.

SHELLEY

Aw, Brodie. Can I have a word?

BRODIE

Sure.

SHELLEY

I know that Dani must have been talking to you about what happened with Josh last night?

BRODIE

A bit.

SHELLEY

Yeah, I don’t want you to betray any confidences, but I do know that things didn’t work out quite the way she wanted them to and if she says anything if she said anything that could give Rhys or me a clue.

BRODIE

Shelley, if Dani found out I’d been talking to you about personal stuff she’d feel like she couldn’t trust me anymore.

SHELLEY

But if it was so that we could help her?

BRODIE

I just can’t. It wouldn’t be right.

SHELLEY

Yeah, of course. Sorry I asked.

BRODIE walks out.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

RHYS and COLLEEN are at the counter. ALF is standing at the entrance to the kitchen.

ALF

So, that’s Celia and Blake, Steven, Frank and Carly.

COLLEEN

And Lancie.

ALF

And we’re still waiting to hear from Sophie and Floss. Looks like we’re going to get a pretty good roll up next week.

RHYS

You’re not wrong. The parks fully booked.

COLLEEN

Oh, well I’m not surprised. It’s not every day the town you live in has it’s sesquicentenary is it?

ALF

No. Once every one hundred and fifty years to be exact. Em, I reckon if everyone pulls their weight this one’s going to be a real goodie.

JOSH walks in.

RHYS

Ah, Josh. Can I have a minute mate?

JOSH

Yeah. Sure.

JOSH and RHYS are sitting at a table.

RHYS

I’m not saying that you did anything to deliberately upset her. Sometimes when we get into areas we haven’t been in before we might say or do something hurtful without even meaning to.

JOSH

That didn’t happen. In fact, nothing happened.

RHYS

Right.

JOSH

Look, Mr. Sutherland. I really care about Dani and I know she’s going through a tough time, but if you’re worried about me putting extra pressure on her you can forget it.

RHYS

That’s good to her. I mean, I don’t want to do anything that will interfere between you and Dani, but, I’m her father and I’ll do anything to stop her getting hurt.

JOSH

Yeah, you and me both. Is there anything else you wanted to talk about?

RHYS

No. that just about covers it.

JOSH

Well, thanks for the shake.

JOSH walks out.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

PARIS is walking along the corridor. He bumps into IRENE.

IRENE

Oh.

PARIS

Sorry. Didn’t mean to startle you. I’m Paris Burnett. New principle.

IRENE

Aw, hi. Pleased to meet you.

PARIS

And you’re?

IRENE

Oh, I’m sorry. Oh, god. I’m Irene. Irene Roberts, school secretary. I wish I had known you were going to be here so early. I was planning on have everything ship shape for you.

PARIS

Good. There’s a few things I’d like to get started on a straight away like a list of full teachers currently on staff. Their CV’s. Ah, roster of all teachers and all grades and a quick breakdown of all teaching experience over the last twelve months.

IRENE
Right. Anything else.

PARIS

Yes. I’d like to organise a meeting with all the heads of department. Early as convenient this week. How have we got in here?

PARIS and IRENE walk into a classroom where SALLY is writing on the board.

IRENE

Oh, Sal. This is Mr. Burnett.

PARIS

Paris.

IRENE

Oh, em, Sally Fletcher is our English and History teacher and Mr. Burn, Paris, is our new principal.

SALLY

How do you do Paris?

PARIS

Ancient Egyptian. How are the students finding it?

SALLY

Oh,  we usually have good fun.

PARIS

I thought it was meant to be abjectly boring or you weren’t teaching it properly.

SALLY

Well, at the moment we’re doing Tutankhamen and the mummies, so, em, teaching them about ancient embalming techniques. We’re going to mummify some rats.

PARIS

Real rats.

SALLY

Yeah, real rats.

PARIS

Excellent. I’ll have to drop in. Have a look later on. I’ll be in my office when you’ve those lists for me Irene.

IRENE

OK, I’ll be on to it right away.

PARIS walks out.

IRENE

Not exactly your average headmaster, is he? God, he’s so much younger than I thought he’d be.

SALLY

He’s not the bad sort either, is he?

IRENE

Em, noticed, did we?

SALLY

So, what do you think?

IRENE

Well, I think things aren’t going to be quite as predictable as they were round here when Don was running the joint.

THE BEACHSIDE DINER

DON, JUNE and SEB sit at a table.

DON

Well, so far we’ve established that the new principle has an awesome set of wheels, but you still haven’t told me what you think of the man himself.

SEB

He was cool.

DON

Cool. Well I guess that’s another plus for Mr. Burnett then.

SEB

Don’t worry gramps. You’ll always be my favourite headmaster.

DON

Aw, thanks for that Seb.

SEB

I better head off. Don’t want to be late for Sir.

SEB walks away. COLLEEN walks over to the table.

COLLEEN

Oh, Donald, would you like an extra helping of mushrooms with your omelette this morning.

DON

No.

COLLEEN

I know how you must be feeling stuck here when you’d normally be going back to school with everyone else. Oh, let me see. How long has it been?

ALF walks over.

ALF

Colleen.

COLLEEN

It must be.

ALF

Aren’t you meant to be in the kitchen?

COLLEEN

Ah, yeah. Rightio. I’m sorry I can’t chat. No rest for the wicked.

ALF and COLLEEN walk away.

JUNE

So nice of her to remind you.

DON

Yes, well nevertheless it is something I have to deal with.

JUNE

You are going to fight that court case, aren’t you?

DON

Yes, I am.

JUNE

Good on you.

DANI and BRODIE are walking out. JOSH walks in.

DANI

Hey. Em, I’ve actually got to help Brodie with something.

JOSH

Yeah, well that’s fine. I’ve got stuff in my own life too.

DANI

OK, well I’ve got to go.

DANI and BRODIE walks out.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

PARIS stands in front of a class that has SEB, JADE and JULIUS in it. SALLY is there.

PARIS

Morning everyone. My name is Mr. Burnett. I’m the new principal of Summer Bay High. My principle on education, that it’s two way street. It’s your job to ask the questions and the teachers job to answer them. Really simple. So, any questions?

JULIUS puts his hand up.

JULIUS

Sir, what’s your first name?

The class sighs.

SALLY

Aw, I don’t think they’re the kind of question Mr. Burnett had in mind Julius.

PARIS

No, no, it’s all right. It’s Paris.

The class laughs.

PARIS

My first name’s Paris. So, if anyone has anymore serious questions.

PARIS is in a different class with DANI and BRODIE.

DANI

See, I just want to know why the drug education programme is so out of touch?

PARIS

Could you be more specific Dani?

DANI

OK, well, they don’t use the words that we do. They don’t use E’s or Eccie’s. They say emdiamine or something.

PARIS

So, you don’t think the message is getting through to as many of as you as it might.

DANI

Well no. It’s not like they’re reading it out of a textbook.

PARIS

Can you think of any other ways the programme might be approached?

DANI

Em, I haven’t really thought about it that much.

PARIS

What about the rest of you? Any ideas.

BRODIE

Are you saying you want us to apply our own programme?

PARIS

Oh, say I’m open to suggestions. If you come up with any ideas that seem reasonable I’ll do whatever I can to put them into practice.

DANI

Can we research the information on the net?

PARIS

By all means.

THE SURF CLUB

JADE and SEB are walking along.

JADE

No offence to you granddad Seb, but this new guy. He’s just way more elastic.

SEB

I guess.

LARA is sitting at a table.

JADE

Hi, is anyone home? Why don’t you just go and talk to her?

SEB

Like she’d want to talk to me after what I said.

JADE

I can’t believe this all about you being too woosy to go to a dance class.

SEB

Easy for you to say, isn’t it?

JADE

It’s better than losing a nice girl like Lara. Anyway I’ve got to get some forty hour famine posters. I’ll see you back at school.

JADE walks away. RHYS runs over to SEB.

RHYS

Hey Seb. Hi mate. Em, Shelley said she asked you to speak to Kirsty. You know, try and get her back in to training for her bronze medallion. Have you had a chance to speak to her yet?

SEB

Sorry, I forgot. I will though.

RHYS

Do you reckon you could it do now because the sooner she gets back into it the better off she’s going to be.

SEB

Sure.

RHYS

Thanks.

RHYS runs away. SEB looks at LARA. He then sees KIRSTY cleaning a table. He walks over to KIRSTY.

KIRSTY

Hi.

SEB

I heard a rumour that you wanted to do some bronze medallion training.

KIRSTY

Aw, I might. Why?

SEB

How about  this afternoon? Josh has got a class on at about four pm.

KIRSTY

Well, Seb, if you’re that desperate, I understand, but you owe me big time.

LARA walks away.

SEB

What else is new?

DON and JUNE sit at a table.

JUNE

It must hurt not being back in the principles chair? You’re allowed to admit it, you know.

DON

All right then. It hurts, quite a lot.

JUNE

I wish I could make it better.

DON

You do June. Just having you here lessens the pain considerably.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

IRENE and SALLY walk along a corridor.

IRENE

Yeah, yeah. He actually asked me on some ideas on how to make the place run more efficiently. I mean, Don wouldn’t have done that in a million years.

SALLY

Yeah, he certainly is a lot more laid back.

IRENE

Well, he’s definitely the goods if you ask me.

SEB walks up to LARA.

SEB

Where did you go? One minute you’re outside the surf club. And the next you’re gone.

LARA

I had something to do before.

SEB

I’ve got bronze medallion training after school. I was thinking maybe you could come down to the beach with me and we could do something after I’m finished, like talk about how much an idiot I’ve been.

LARA

That could take a while.

SEB

Cool, I’ll see you then OK.

LARA

OK.

SEB walks away. LARA walks over to JADE.

JADE

So, he’s even going to go dance class with you?

LARA

Not exactly.

NICK walks in on a frame.

NICK

Loyal fans, thank you.

JADE walks over to NICK. IRENE and SALLY clap.

NICK

That’s right.

JADE

Congratulations.

PARIS walks over to them.

PARIS

What happened to your wheels?

NICK

I traded them in. What do you think?

PARIS

Nice lines. Better make it on into class. Nice to see you back on your feet.

NICK

Thanks mate.

PARIS walks over to a forty hour famine poster.

PARIS

Whose is this?

JADE

Eh, that’s mine sir.

PARIS

Who gave you permission to put it up?

JADE

No one.

PARIS

Well, you better take it down until you do get permission.

THE BEACH

The surf club van drives along the beach. JOSH is on the beach. SEB and KIRSTY run out the surf. JOSH blows his whistle. LARA watches them from up by the surf club.

JOSH

Good work guys, but next time we’re going to gave put a hell of a lot more effort in, all right.

KIRSTY

More effort. He’s kidding right.

SEB

No, you’re just out of practice.

KIRSTY

You noticed.

THE SURF CLUB

LARA watches SEB and KIRSTY down on the beach.

THE BEACH

SEB and KIRSTY are there.

KIRSTY

Thank you very much for getting me here.

SEB

No worries.

KIRSTY

Like I said it kills, but I love it.

SEB

Now you’re taking it just a  bit too far.

KIRSTY

Anyway, I wouldn’t come down here on my own.

SEB

I hope it all works out for you Kirst.

LARA waves at SEB. SEB waves back at her.

SEB

Me, Jade and Nick are rocking up at the diner later on. Are you going to be there?

KIRSTY

Yeah, sure.

SEB

Cool. I’ll catch you later OK.

KIRSTY

OK, see you.

SEB walks away. KIRSTY smiles. DANI walks up to JOSH.

DANI

Can we talk?

JOSH

Babe. Of course.

DANI

About last night I have to explain. Em, you see, all that stuff about Kane. See it’s just that.

JOSH

Baby, you don’t, you don’t have to explain everything. I love you and I’m going to help you do anything to get through this.

DANI

I love you too, so much.

DANI and JOSH kiss, then they cuddle. NICK and JADE are walking along.

NICK

It’s just seeing the guys out there doing their bronze medallion. I can’t help wishing I was out there with them.

JADE

You’ll be out there. You’re making really good progress.

NICK

Do you reckon?

JADE

Yes, I do. Nick, it could be a whole lot worse. You might be making no progress at all.

NICK

I guess you’re right.

JADE

Nick, I know it’s hard, but your physio said if you keep at it and do everything she tells you to do, then you’ll be walking again properly in no time.

NICK

Right.

NICK watches a boat out in the bay.

NICK

Man, I’d love to be doing that.

JADE

Yeah, it looks like fun.

SUMMER BAY HIGH

IRENE and PARIS are there.

PARIS

Everything all right Irene? Everything work from your side of things.

IRENE screws up her face.

PARIS

Obviously not so well.

IRENE

Look, to be honest, I got a bit of a shock when you came down so hard on Jade Sutherland for whacking up that forty hour famine poster. Well, I just thought, on your first day.

PARIS

I might have gone a little easier.

IRENE

Well, yeah.

PARIS

It’s all part of an overall strategy. Over react to something small to begin with and get their attention. Then a little later on down the track you ease off the throttle, when I get the message across the students will be more receptive.

IRENE

Right.

PARIS

Anything else. Just that silence killing.

IRENE

Look, you know this meet and greet do that you’ve got happening tomorrow. You’ve got Don Fisher’s name down on the list of the people you’d like to come along. Well, I just wanted to make sure that you definitely wanted me to ask him.

PARIS

Yes, please.

IRENE

OK, I’ll see you tomorrow.

PARIS

Look forward to it.

PARIS walks away.

THE SURF CLUB

LARA is standing there. SEB runs up to him.

SEB

Sorry I’m late. Josh got a bit carried away.

LARA

OK, how’s Kirsty?

SEB

I think the training’s going to get her back on track.

LARA

The training or you.

SEB

Sorry.

LARA

Seb, look, if it’s Kirsty you want to be with just tell me. I’m not going to get upset. I just really want you to be honest.

SEB

Me and Kirsty. That’s what you think?

LARA

I saw you guys together at lunchtime and I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to get back with her. I mean, she’s gorgeous and you look so good together.

SEB

Lara.

LARA

And I bet you she’s a really good kisser as well.

SEB

Lara, I am over Kirsty.

LARA

Are you sure?

SEB

There is only one person I am interested in and it’s you. Trust me, you are an amazing kissing.

LARA

Really. Seb, are you sure it’s me you want to be with?

SEB

Yes. If I agree to coming to dancing classes with you, would you believe me then?

LARA

You’d do that for me.

SEB

You’d have to give me lessons first. Would you?

LARA

Would I ever.

SEB and LARA cuddle. KIRSTY watches them. LARA and SEB walk away.
