THE BEACH HOUSE

HAYLEY holds LILY. WILL is also there.

HAYLEY

Oh, they’re so mean, aren’t they? He’s taking you away from Auntie Hayley. You don’t want to go, do you?

WILL

Yeah, we’re so mean taking here where I am actually going to have a decent job.

HAYLEY

That’s not all that matters.

WILL

Oh, says the girl that’s about to go to university.

HAYLEY

Yeah, all right, all right. I know. Doesn’t mean I have to like it, does it?

IRENE comes down the stairs.

IRENE

Mmm, that goes double for me. You all packed?

WILL

Yeah, Alf’s going to pick up the bags. You guys are all still right with sending the boxes and the bed up aren’t you?

IRENE
Yeah, sure love. I’ll organise a courier tomorrow. Something more I have to add to me list.

WILL

Sort of appropriate. Last day as a single man, spending it in a single bed.

GYPSY walks out of the bedroom.

GYPSY

I’m ready.

WILL

OK then.

GYPSY
Irene, thank you so much for everything.

IRENE

Oh love. You are more than worth it. Come here.

They cuddle.

GYPSY
Bye Will. I’ll see you at the wharf.

WILL

OK. Don’t be late.

GYPSY
Well why? I’ve got to start out the way I plan on continuing.

WILL
OK, well just don’t be too late all right. We’ve got a boat to catch.

HAYLEY

This is so romantic. Sailing off into the sunset. Well somebody’s got to get into the spirit of things. Yeah, don’t let them fool you Lily pad. Pretending they’re super cool, but they’re actually very excited.

GYPSY

Your Auntie Hayley is a very, very silly girls sometime, but I think this time she is actually right.

SUMMER BAY HOUSE

SHELLEY and JADE are there.

SHELLEY

If you keep smiling like that Jade, I’m going to start wondering what you have been up to.

JADE

I’m just thinking about the wedding. Kirsty is so peeved she is not going.

SHELLEY
The only reason you’re going is because you’re Nick’s partner.

JADE

Doesn’t matter. I’m going and she’s not. Still haven’t decided what I’m wearing yet. I mean it’s on a wharf so I don’t want to wear anything too formal or I’ll look silly, but then again it’s a wedding.

SHELLEY

I know these are the great issues facing the world these days, aren’t they?

JADE

Mum, it’s important.

DANI walks in.

SHELLEY

Oh, did you see Josh?

DANI

Missed him by that much.

SHELLEY

Oh, sweetie.

DANI

Yep, another Dani Sutherland stuff-up. Mum, why do I do it? If I like someone why can’t I just admit it instead of playing games? You know, it’s so, so stupid, but I do it every time.

THE BEACH HOUSE

WILL and IRENE sit at the table.

IRENE

Can’t believe you’ll actually be going tomorrow.

WILL

Yeah, it’s scary, isn’t it?

IRENE
Oh, well, had to happen sooner or later.

WILL

Well at least now you might have a bit of peace and quiet.

IRENE

Oh, please, I think Hayley and Nick will be keeping me on me toes for a while yet, mate.

WILL

Yeah, I reckon. I bet you, you didn’t know what you were getting yourself into when you took me in.

IRENE

Maybe not, but you know something; I wouldn’t change anything for quids.

WILL

I owe you so much Irene. If it wasn’t for you.

IRENE

Love, I think you got it the other way around. Taking you in was just about the best thing I ever did.

WILL

Going to really miss you Irene.

IRENE

Me to love.

It’s the middle of the night. WILL bursts out of his room into the toilet where he is sick. NICK comes out his room carrying a teddy bear and a baseball bat. He switched a light on.

NICK

Who’s there?

IRENE comes down the stairs.

IRENE
Nick. What in blue blazers is going on?

NICK
I don’t know, but I heard something, OK. Stay here.

HAYLEY walks down the stairs.

IRENE

God sake.

NICK
Irene.

HAYLEY

What’s the noise?

IRENE

Somebody’s having a bad dream.

NICK

I heard something all right.

WILL is sick again.

NICK

There you go. Will, you in there?

IRENE

All right. You made your point smarty-pants. Will, love, are you OK?

WILL comes out the toilet.

WILL

Nut.

HAYLEY

You can’t be sick. You’re getting married tomorrow, em today.

WILL

Do you think I don’t know that?

IRENE
Love, are you actually bringing anything up?

WILL
Yeah.

IRENE
Look, you don’t think it might be nerves about tomorrow do you?

WILL

Nut.

WILL goes back into the toilet and is sick again. In the morning WILL sits at the table. IRENE, NICK and HAYLEY are all there.

IRENE

Here you go mate. Get that into you.

WILL

Irene, it’s only going to come back up again.

HAYLEY

Well you can’t have very much left to bring up.

WILL

Tell me about it.

JADE walks in.

JADE
Hey.

HAYLEY

Hi.

JADE

What’s wrong?

NICK
Will’s sick.

JADE
Aw, you can’t be sick, not today.

IRENE
Look, please, can we try and be a little bit scientific about this. Look Will, what have you eaten that we haven’t?

JADE

Uh-oh.

IRENE

What uh-oh?

JADE

You didn’t buy any of Max’s pies, did you? Please tell me you didn’t.

IRENE

Well yeah. They were for the fundraiser.

JADE

A fundraiser for Max and Kirsty.

IRENE
Oh, don’t tell me.

JADE

They were past the use-by-date. Dad was throwing them out. A lot of people have got sick.

WILL

You tell your cousin from me that when I get my hands on him I am going to sit him down and make him eat every single last one of those pies?

JADE

Yeah, everyone said that.

WILL
Except I’m going to do it.

IRENE
No, you’re not. What you’re going to do is rest mate. Oh my god. I’m supposed to be picking Nathan up now. Love, you’re going to have to take over all right. Make sure he gets some rest and make sure he gets himself organised.

HAYLEY
I can’t. I’ve got to go over and help Gypsy get ready.

NICK
I am capable of dressing myself Irene.

IRENE
All right then, but please promise me that you’ll get organised and not suddenly discover that your pants need ironing at the last minute.
WILL

Hey, no one tell Gypsy about this, OK. I reckon if I’ve got anything I’ll be fine.

IRENE

This all.

HAYLEY
Oh, I’ve got to go to Gypsy’s.

WILL, IRENE and HAYLEY all leave.

NICK

Welcome to the madhouse.

A ROAD

NATHAN sits on a park bench. VINNIE and ALF are in a car.

ALF

Ah, stupid woman.

VINNIE
Where?

ALF

There.

VINNIE

Stewie, that’s a guy.

ALF
No mate, what that is, is bad news of the worst order. Tell you what, that Nathan Roberts. I told Irene to have nothing further to do with him, but I suppose he is her son. You can’t expect her to turn her back on him entirely can you? I just hope she doesn’t regret it, that’s all.

SALLY’S HOUSE

CHARLOTTE carries three glasses of champagne. SALLY is doing GYPSY’S hair.

CHARLOTTE
Here we go. Here we go.

GYPSY
Thank you.

SALLY
Aw, I’ll grab one in a minute, thank you.

HAYLEY arrives.

HAYLEY

Hi. Aw, you’ve started.

SALLY
Aw, just.

CHARLOTTE

Would you like some champagne Hayley?

HAYLEY

Aw, probably better not.

GYPSY
No, I probably shouldn’t either considering I’ve got vows to remember. But then again I do only do this once, but Will and I are doing it again when we get to Queensland so that’s not really once, that’s twice. I’m reeling, aren’t I?

SALLY
Yes.

GYPSY
I don’t know why I’m nervous. I really got nothing to be nervous about.

SALLY
Well you wouldn’t be human if you weren’t. I bet Will’s at home with butterflies too, you know.

HAYLEY

Yeah. He did say something about his stomach turning over.

A ROAD

NATHAN sits on the bench. IRENE is in her car. She stops. NATHAN stands up and walks towards the car. IRENE looks in her mirror before getting out the car.

IRENE

Hello Nathan. Em, I’m sorry I’m late. Have you been waiting long?

NATHAN

Oh, a few years.

IRENE
Em, this morning I mean.

IRENE opens the boot and NATHAN puts his bags in it.

NATHAN
Half expected you not to come at all. Fin couldn’t wait to get rid of me. Why should you be any different?

IRENE

The, em, the reason I’m late actually is things are all over the shop at home today. Will’s getting married.

NATHAN
Yeah, I heard about that. You must be real proud. Sounds like he’s the son you always wanted.

NATHAN shuts the boot.

THE BEACH HOUSE

JADE and NICK are there. IRENE and NATHAN walk in.

IRENE
Em, well this is it.

NATHAN

Yeah.

IRENE
A bit improved over the years.

NATHAN

Not bad.

IRENE
Em, this is Nick and, em, his girlfriend Jade.

NICK
Hi.

JADE
Hi.

NICK tries to shake hands with NATHAN. WILL walks out of his room.

IRENE
Em, that’s Will love.

WILL
Yeah, I’m all right. Just like Hayley says, there is nothing else to bring up.

IRENE
Well, thank god for that.

NATHAN
Guess there is a couple there I’ll recognise.

IRENE
Em, Will, this is Nathan.

WILL
Hey, how you going?

NATHAN
Well, I’m fine, but I’m not the one who’s getting married today though.

WILL
Well I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t want to. Listen, em, I’m going to start getting dressed. I’ll get you the ring.

NICK
I’ve already got it.

WILL
Nuh.

NICK
Yeah, I do. You gave it to me.

WILL
Well I took it back.

JADE

Oh no.

WILL

What’s the deal? I just got it organised.

NICK stands up.

NICK

Why didn’t you tell me?

WILL

Because you weren’t here.

NICK
I don’t believe this.

IRENE
Nick, what’s the problem?

NICK

I thought I’d lost it.

WILL

Yeah, well, you didn’t, so there’s nothing to stress about it.

NICK

Isn’t there? I only sold my Nintendo to buy you a new one.

WILL

You dork.

NICK

Me dork. No, no, no, no, you dork. Why didn’t you tell me?

JADE
Maybe they’ll let you take it back

NICK
Aw yeah, and if they don’t Jade, what do I do then? What do I do with the wedding ring?

WILL

Suppose you can just hold onto it until Jade needs it.

NICK
Aw, you’re real funny.

IRENE

Come on love. Look on the funny side. Look, we’ll work things out. I promise you. You’ll get your Nintendo back Nick.

THE WHARF

ALF and COLLEEN are there. The VICAR is also there.

ALF

Good day there. Good day for it.

DANI, JADE, RHYS and SHELLEY all walk towards the wharf.

JADE

This is absolutely the perfect place for a wedding. When I get married I’m going to do something like this.

RHYS
Yes, but that’s not going to be happening for a while yet.

JADE

You never know. I’ve already got the ring.

COLLEEN walks up to them.

COLLEEN
Yoo-hoo, do you mind if I stay with you.

SHELLEY

No, of course not.

COLLEEN
Well we are sort of family, aren’t we? The caravan park family. Oh, there’s Leah and Vinnie. Perhaps I should stand with them. She might need help with Vincent Junior. Oh dear, it’s so hard to know what to do in these informal occasions, isn’t it?

ALEX, LEAH carrying VJ and VINNIE, with the camcorder, arrive.

VINNIE

Oh, don’t tell me it’s only wind. That was a smile. That was definitely a smile.

ALEX
Vinnie, I thought this was supposed to be Will and Gypsy’s wedding video.

LEAH
Yeah, Alexi is right. They don’t want a few good shots of VJ.

VINNIE
Look at that face. How can you resist it?

LEAH
Vinnie, film other people.

ALEX

Watch out, watch out.

VINNIE almost walks into RHYS.

VINNIE

Hey.

SHELLEY

Hi.

CHARLOTTE, NOAH, JUDE and SALLY arrive.

CHARLOTTE

That’s another reason it wouldn’t worked out for me and Steve. He wanted to go on a cruise for the honeymoon right. I get sick standing on the wharf.

JUDE

Know that you mean.

NOAH

You all right.

JUDE

Yeah, yeah of course.

VINNIE walks up to them.

VINNIE
Hey among the distinguished guests is the ever-gorgeous Sally Fletcher, the dashing Jude Lawson and his lovely companion Charlotte, oh and there’s Jude brother Noah.

NOAH

How come Jude gets to be dashing and they get to be lovely and gorgeous? I’m just his brother you know.

VINNIE

Man, come on. Take it seriously. This is Will and Gypsy’s official video.

LEAH
What?

VINNIE

What?

LEAH

You know.

VINNIE
Just a smile.

NOAH
The groom’s here.

Everybody cheers.

VINNIE
Hey, it’s Awillo. Hey, all right big brothers.

WILL, NICK and IRENE get out of the car.

ALEX

Nice shirts guys.

COLLEEN

They’re making a mockery of the whole thing.

ALF
No, they’re doing it their way Colleen and good luck to them.

RHYS
You OK?

DANI

I’m fine.

ALF’S phone rings.

ALF

Yeah, all right. I’ll let them know. Oi, Gypsy’s on her way.

NICK

Are you nervous?

WILL

Of course not mate.

WILL’S hand shakes.

THE BEACH HOUSE

NATHAN walks around the house drinking beer.

THE WHARF

GYPSY, carrying LILY and HAYLEY get out the car. There is a crowd of people there.

COLLEEN

Aw, now, isn’t that appropriate.

ALF
Oh, settle down Colleen.

SHELLEY
Aw, they’re beautiful.

JUDE

Charlotte, I’m going to go.

JUDE leaves.

CHARLOTTE
Jude.

NOAH
He’ll be all right.

NICK, HAYLEY, WILL and GYPSY all gather on the wharf. IRENE smiles. HAYLEY then takes LILY and WILL and GYPSY kiss. There are then some clips of the wedding.

WILL
I will respect your right to make your own decisions and I will love you as much for being one as when we are two.

GYPSY

And I promise to be there for you when you need me and I will not lie to you or shut you off from what I am feeling.

The crowd watches.

VICAR

Will and Gypsy have invited you here today to witness this afternoon of their commitment to each other. This commitment we now symbolise according to tradition with the exchange of the ring.

NICK takes it out and drops it. There are gasps from the crowd. WILL picks it up and puts it on GYPSY’S finger. The crowd watches on before they kiss. The crowd claps. Later, JADE, DANI, RHYS and SHELLEY are walking along.

JADE
I almost died when he dropped the ring and after everything else that’s happened.

RHYS
Well, do you still think a wharf’s the best place for a wedding?

JADE

Yes. I’ll just get someone reliable to hold the ring.

SHELLEY
Well.

JOSH walks up to them.

JOSH

Would you like a glass of wine?

DANI
Eh, no thank you, I don’t. What are you doing here?

JOSH
I got a job waiting.

DANI

Thought you’d left.

JOSH

Changed my mind. I’ll be over later to book back into my caravan if that’s all right Mr. Sutherland.

RHYS
Sure, OK, and eh, yeah, I’ll have a drop of the red when you’re ready.

JUDE sits on the beach. NOAH sits next to him.

NOAH

You all right?

JUDE

Yeah, just couldn’t handle the ceremony, you know.

NOAH

Could say Charlotte’s a bit confused?

JUDE

Me too.

NOAH
Shauna’s still got you jumping through hoops, hasn’t she?

JUDE

It’s not that easy to cut it out of your mind. This was where we were meant to get married.

CHARLOTTE and SALLY are on a grass verge behind them.

CHARLOTTE

So, is there something I should know about? I mean, what’s going on?

SALLY
Charlotte, I really don’t think that there’s anything for you to worry about. OK.

WILL, GYPSY, HAYLEY and IRENE all stand behind NICK. The crowd watches them.

NICK
I reckon Will’s going to make a terrific dad. He’s had plenty of chances to practice on me and Hail’s when we were kids.

JADE stands next to SHELLEY.

JADE
I wrote that bit.

NICK
Seriously I don’t know what would have happened if it wasn’t for Will. He was the one who wouldn’t let us forget that no matter what we were still a family and you know, he’s got his own family now. And, em, like I said before I think he’s going to be great, but I also know someone else who would agree with me if they were here right now and that’s our dad. We’re going to miss you Will, but, hey, I get the good bedroom now so.

JADE
He wrote that bit himself.

THE BEACH HOUSE

The painting of HAYLEY, WILL, NICK, KEN and IRENE lies smashed. NATHAN is there. ALF walks in.

NATHAN

G’day Alf. Can I help you?

ALF
I forgot you were here. Your mother asked me to pick up Will and Gypsy’s bags.

NATHAN
I guess that would be them.

ALF
Yeah, I reckon it would be.

ALF picks up the bags.

ALF

What happened to that?

NATHAN
The string broke.

ALF

Is that a fact?

NATHAN
I just said so.

ALF

Well that’s a hell of a shame because young Hayley put a lot of work into that.

NATHAN
How’s Sarah Alf? You ever hear from her?

ALF

Now and then. She’s good. Her and Tug are about to have their second kid.

NATHAN

Well send her my regards next time you speak to her will you.

ALF

No. I don’t think I’ll be doing that.

NATHAN
Well something’s never change, eh.

ALF
It’s funny that. That’s exactly what I said when I heard you were coming back.

ALF leaves.

THE WHARF

NICK and WILL are there.

WILL

Listen Nick. Thanks for the speech. I mean it was really nice. I thought you were going to give me a real working over, you know.

NICK
I thought about it, but I couldn’t, not today, not now. You know man I really mean that you know, about how you looked after us.

WILL

It’s cool. It’s your turn now. You look after them.

NICK
Yeah, I’ll never be as good at it as you were.

WILL

I reckon you will be. It’s cool. Come here mate.

They cuddle. JUDE carries two glasses of champagne to SALLY and CHARLOTTE.

JUDE

You want some bubbly?

SALLY

Eh, I might go and get a mineral water actually.

SALLY walks away.

CHARLOTTE

Is everything all right?

JUDE

Yeah. Crowd s just get to me after a while. Need some space.

GYPSY and WILL are talking to DANI.

DANI
I just wanted to wish you guys the best.

WILL

Thanks.

DANI
I hope it goes well. Well, I know it’s going to go well. It’s just that. OK, that was really.

GYPSY
Oh, don’t worry.

DANI
I just want you to be happy. OK.

GYPSY
Thanks.

DANI
Irene I think wants to talk to you so I’m going to go.

WILL
All right. Take care.

DANI leaves. IRENE walks up to GYPSY and WILL.

IRENE
Well, look at you two. You know, your dad will be so proud. Mind you, he’d be going some to beat me.

They all cuddle. JOSH and DANI are sitting on the edge of the wharf.

JOSH
I saw you talking to Will and Gypsy before. A bit rough.

DANI

More like closure actually.

JOSH
Good.

ALF is on the wharf.

ALF
I hate to be a party pooper team, but some bloke once said time and tide waits for no man. Now I don’t know about the time part of it, but he was spot on with the second bit. We’ve got a boat waiting out at the mouth for these two so we better get them out there, ay.

They all follow ALF down the wharf towards the Blaxland.

JOSH

We got two hours down the coast and I decided who the hell am I doing this for. Certainly not me. So I turned around and came back.

JADE walks up to them.

JADE

Dani, come on. They’re leaving.

DANI
I’m coming OK. I actually came looking for you when it was to late. I was going to say that I didn’t want you to go.

JOSH
Lucky I didn’t go then.

The boat leaves the wharf. There are cries of goodbye and we’ll miss you. The crowd waves from the wharf and GYPSY and WILL wave from the Blaxland.
